Footprints in the sand – Assessing the seasonal trends of volatile methylsiloxanes and UV-filters

This study focused on the determination of seven volatile methylsiloxanes (VMSs) and eleven UV-filters (UVFs) in beach sand from the Oporto's region (Portugal). A QuEChERS methodology (“Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe”) was used to extract VMSs from the sand, which has never been employed before. To extract the UVFs, a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was used. The analyses were performed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Twenty-three beach sand samples were analysed, from two campaigns – summer/winter. VMSs were found in all the samples with concentrations ranging from 0.007 ± 0.001 to 17.8 ± 0.9 ng g−1dw, while UVFs in summer samples from 0.030 ± 0.001 to 373 ± 17 ng g−1dw. Cyclic VMSs and octocrylene (OC) were detected in higher concentrations. In general, higher levels were detected in summer than winter. Hazard quotients were determined and 3-(4′-methylbenzylidene) camphor (4-MBC), 2-ethylhexyl 4-methoxycinnamate (EMC) and benzophenone-3 (BP3) presented values >1, which may indicate that they may pose an ecotoxicological risk.

Knowledge of key species sensitivity for oil spill response (OSR) options is needed to support decision-making and mitigate impact on sensitive life stages of keystone species. Here, Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) larvae were exposed for 24 h to a gradient (H-High, M-Medium: 10 times dilution and L-Low: 100 times dilution) of mechanically- (MDO) (H < 6 mg/L total hydrocarbon content) and chemically- (CDO) dispersed oil (Slickgone NS, H < 20 mg/L total hydrocarbon content), followed by a recovery period. Larval mortality, feeding rate and development were evaluated.Overall, the results show that 24 h exposure to field-realistic concentrations of CDO lead to lower survival, reduced feeding rate and slower larval development in P. borealis larvae compared to MDO. These effects persisted during recovery, indicating a higher vulnerability with dispersant use and the need for longer observation periods post-exposure to fully evaluate the consequences for sensitive life-stages from OSR.

Using a laboratory simulation experiment, we studied the trend of change in methylmercury (MeHg) content of sediments in response to the changing salinity of flooding water (deionized water, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0%) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) content for both the surface layer (0–10 cm) and the bottom layer (10–20 cm) of Suaeda heteroptera wetland sediments in the Liaohe estuary under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, respectively. The results showed that under AAC (anaerobic conditions), the MeHg content in the surface and bottom sediment layers increased first and then decreased over time and was highest at the 14th day. In contrast, under AC (aerobic conditions), the MeHg content in sediments of both layers increased slowly with increasing test time. The MeHg content in sediments increased first and then decreased with rising salinity and was highest at a salinity of 1.0%. Among the samples collected at different experimental stages, the SRB content in the sediments showed a decreasing trend with rising flooding salinity under AAC and AC. The MeHg and SRB contents were higher under anaerobic conditions than under aerobic conditions. Linear fitting results showed that there was no linear correlation between MeHg contents and SRB quantities in surface and bottom sediments under AAC and AC (R² < 0.1). Collectively, these results suggest an important role for flooding salinity and anaerobic-aerobic conditions in the production of MeHg in S. heteroptera wetlands of the Liaohe estuary, and may predict the ecological risk of methylmercury according to the change of salinity.

The aim of this study was to analyze different port areas (leased, nonleased and vessels) in terms of plastic segregation (scenario 1) and how much of this plastic is recycled (scenario 2). Data envelopment analysis was applied and the variables were total amount of solid waste and percentage of segregated plastic in relation to total solid waste (scenario 1) and amount of segregated plastics and percentage of recycled in relation to segregated plastics (scenario 2). Segregation efficiency was low (49%) in the nonleased area, but all the segregated material is recycled, suggesting that the management bottleneck in this case is waste segregation. Similar segregation results were obtained in the leased areas and vessels (36 and 35%, respectively), but recycling efficiency was greater in the former (92 and 24%, respectively).

Surface sediments were collected from the shore and lagoons of Kavaratti, Kadmat and Agatti islands of Lakshadweep Archipelago and analysed for trace element concentration. The sediment contamination was assessed on the basis of geochemical, biological hazard and ecological risk indices. Except Cd and Pb, all the other trace elements selected for the study were below the contamination level. Compared to Kadmat, Kavaratti and Agatti were more polluted and the pollution was pronounced in lagoons than shore. Population pressure, untreated sewage, diesel based power generation, shipping and tourism activities contribute to sediment contamination. Statistical analysis revealed the association of trace elements with sedimentary characteristics due to anthropogenic sources.

In this study, positive matrix factorization, multilinear engine 2, and geographic information systems were used to characterize the spatial-temporal patterns of sources for nine heavy metals in the surface sediments of the Yangtze River Estuary in different seasons. Results showed that six sources were identified: agricultural pesticide, marine transportation, chemical factory wastewater, metal smelter waste, atmospheric deposition, and agricultural fertilizer. The proportions of sources were similar during the entire year but varied among the seasons. The differences in the proportions of agricultural pesticide between winter and other seasons were greater than 12%. Over 40% of the Cd concentration in most seasons was attributed to atmospheric deposition, while less than 5% in autumn. The impact strength of most sources, except marine transportation and metal smelter waste, decreased from the inner regions to the adjacent sea. The difference in the impact strength of agricultural pesticide was the largest throughout the study area.

Microplastic distribution in waters gained increasing attention because of the discovery of microplastics in edible marine organisms. Microplastic size is small, and hence, it tends to float in the water column, thereby making it easy to enter and accumulate in the marine organism. Microplastic abundance is highly associated with the population density. The North Coast of Surabaya is the main area for community activities in East Java; therefore, it is highly vulnerable to receive microplastic input from the mainland. This study aimed to analyze the abundance, distribution, and characteristics of microplastics in the northern coastal waters of Surabaya. The study was conducted in March 2017. The results showed that the highest and lowest microplastic abundances were found in Lamong Bay. The microplastic characteristics in all stations showed that foam was the dominant form and polystyrene was the dominant type, with sizes of 500–1000 μm and 300–500 μm.

The coastal ecological environments are heavily affected by anthropogenic activities as well as global climate change. Macrofauna can be used as good indicators for benthic ecological quality status due to its relatively slow movement ability under disturbance and a variety of assessment approaches have been established based on the characteristics of macrofauna. The benthic ecological quality of the Bohai Sea, China, is increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activities. In order to accurately assess the benthic ecological quality status in this region, Shannon-Wiener diversity index, ABC curve, AMBI, M-AMBI and macrofaunal feeding evenness index were used. Results showed that the northern Laizhou Bay and Bohai Bay were under slight disturbance while Liaodong Bay, the central Bohai Sea and Bohai Strait were under moderate disturbance. Overall, the ecological quality indicated by the assessment results of AMBI, Shannon-Wiener diversity index and feeding evenness index were better than that by M-AMBI and the ABC curve.

Volcanic CO₂ seeps were successfully used to predict coral reef response to ocean acidification, although toxic elements, often characteristic of hydrothermal vents were rarely reported. We measured the physicochemical conditions, seawater carbonate chemistry and trace elements in Tutum Bay, Papua New Guinea. There, intense emission of hydrothermal fluids and CO₂ expose the coral reef to a seawater pHT between 7.6 and 7.7.Arsenic and silica were enriched by up to six times in surface seawater, while bottom concentrations were lower and thus similar to coral reefs worldwide. Manganese, cesium, iron and zinc concentrations fell into the range of other coastal environments. Our measurements suggest that Tutum Bay is a suitable site to study the response of coral reefs to high pCO₂. Considering that arsenic is a common metal in hydrothermal fluids, its characterization should be included in any study that uses volcanic CO₂ seeps as natural laboratories for ocean acidification.

The global plastic economy demands to reduce the flow of plastic into oceans and promote remedial actions for already accumulated seafloor litter. In this perspective, baseline levels of contamination and tools for dating litter items in order to assess the efficacy of those actions, are thus needed. In this note we discuss the utility of introducing the acquisition of shelf-life and labels features from litter items into already established standardized protocols such as the one proposed by MEDiterranean International Trawl Survey (MEDITS). Our investigation was conducted on 612 high resolution images of litter items collected in each haul, which was retrieved during 6 years of surveys (2013–2018) around Sardinian sea (central western Mediterranean). While for the majority of items (89%) expiration date or labels were not present or legible, over 50% of dated items were likely dumped at sea from a period <5 years. In this perspective, this sort of data could represent a useful tool for monitoring the effectiveness of input reduction actions that implicitly rely on the gradual reduction of recently dumped items.
