Determination of ten metal levels in 160 squid samples caught from offshore and the oceanic fishing locations by ICP-MS was made. The mean metal concentration in the squid muscles decreasing in the order of: Zn, Fe, Cu, As, Mn, Se, Cd, Pb, Cr and Ni. Metal concentrations in the squids were assessed for human uses according to provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) and provisional tolerable daily intake (PTDI)·The estimated hazard quotients for the individual metals from squids were found in accordance to the following sequence: As > Cd > Cu > Se > Cr > Zn > Pb > Fe > Mn > Ni, with the greatest hazard upon human health coming primarily from As (1.34 < HQ < 1.73 in the Loliginidae from two offshore sampling sites and the Humboldt squid from the eastern Pacific Ocean). In regards to the heavy metal pollution of the coastal sea areas, the squids captured from offshore sites might pose a higher potential health risk to consumers compared to those from the ocean.

Surface sediments and clam Meretrix meretrix were collected from a northern estuarine region in Dongying City, China. Sediments were analysed for heavy metals (Hg, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) and the clams were tested for metallothioneins (MTs) and lysosomal membrane stability (LMS). The heavy metal total concentrations decreased in the order of Cr>Zn>Cu>Pb>As>Cd>Hg. The results of Bureau Communautaire de Référence (BCR) sequential extraction of heavy metals showed that the geochemical speciation of all heavy metals was dominated by residual fraction. According to the responses of biomarkers in M. meretrix, the modified potential ecological risk index (PERI-B) can more accurately reflect heavy metals pollution. PERI-B showed all sediment samples have low or moderate risk, except at site S10 (considerable risk), and the main contribution of ecological risk heavy metals were Cd and Hg.

This work tackles a multidisciplinary study on the recent sedimentary record of the Bilbao estuary (northern Spain), which is the backbone of a city that was primarily industrial and now is widely recognized as a successful example of urban transformation. Although hotspots of heavily polluted materials still remain at the mouth of the two main tributaries (Galindo and Gobelas), the data obtained confirm the ongoing formation of a new layer of sediments (here called “postindustrial zone”) covering historically polluted and azoic deposits. It is characterized by largely variable levels of metals and magnetic susceptibility and moderate-to-high abundances of benthic foraminifera. Monitoring of the evolution of this layer appears a key factor to assess environmental improvement and decision-making in polluted estuaries.

The direct evidences for the ingestion of microplastics by cetaceans, especially the cetaceans in Asian marine areas are limited. In this study, residue of microplastics in the intestinal tracts of East Asian finless porpoises (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis sunameri) was investigated. Microplastics were detected in all specimens, with mean abundance of 19.1 ± 7.2 items/individual. With respect to microplastics properties, fibers, blue items, and polypropylene were predominant in shapes, colors, and plastic materials, respectively. Trophic transfer and unintentional ingestion might be the potential pathways for microplastics ingested by finless porpoise. The specific intestinal structure might account for the predominance of fibers and the accumulation of microplastics at the beginning portion of intestines. This study indicates that cetaceans in Chinese marine areas also suffer from microplastics pollution. Further studies on the fate and ecological effects of microplastics should be conducted to reveal their potential risks to cetaceans.

Sponges harbor a great diversity of symbiotic microorganisms. However, environmental stresses can affect this partnership and influence the health and abundance of the host sponges. In Bolinao, Pangasinan, Philippines, chronic input of organic materials from mariculture activities contributes to a eutrophic coastal environment. To understand how these conditions might affect sponge-microbial partnerships, transplantation experiments were conducted with the marine sponge Gelliodes obtusa. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA revealed that the associated microbial community of the sponges did not exhibit significant shifts after six weeks of transplantation at a eutrophic fish farm site compared to sponges grown at a coral reef or a seagrass area. However, sponges at the fish farm revealed higher abundance of the amoA gene, suggesting that microbiome members are responsive to increased ammonium levels at the site. The stable association between G. obtusa and its microbiome indicates that the sponge holobiont can withstand eutrophication pressure from mariculture.

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) poses a significant threat to the conservation of green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-PAHs are considered mutagenic, carcinogenic and toxic, and can act as cofactor of this disease. In order to evaluate possible differences between green sea turtles with and without FP, we monitored 15 PAHs in liver samples of 44 specimens (24 with FP) captured in Brazil. We detected eight PAHs and quantified phenanthrene in all green sea turtles with FP. Specimens without FP presented lower values than the tumored ones (1.48 ng g−1 and 17.35 ng g−1, respectively; p < 0.0001). There were no significant differences between tumored and non-tumored specimens, among studied areas, or Southwest Atlantic Fibropapillomatosis Score. Even though we found higher concentrations in the liver samples of green sea turtles with FP, further studies are necessary to confirm if these pollutants are involved in the pathogenesis of the disease.

Release of PAHs and heavy metals in coastal environments linked to leisure boats 全文

Leisure boats are responsible for elevated levels of heavy metals and PAHs in sediments in- and near marinas and natural harbours. As these compounds are released directly into the water column they also pose a threat to organisms in the pelagic environment.Passive samplers were deployed during peak and post tourist season in the water column of natural harbours, leisure boat waterways and small marinas to measure the dissolved fraction of PAHs and metal ions.Differences between seasons indicative of leisure boat activities were found as PAH composition differed between peak and post season for natural harbours and waterways, where heavier PAHs increased during peak season. During peak season, metal samplers were covered by biofouling, which likely affected the uptake. Post season metal concentrations differ between locations, with concentrations exceeding quality standards at near mainland locations where boats are maintained, compared to the sites in the archipelago.

Kosterhavet National Park, a marine protected area on the Swedish west coast, is a popular destination for tourists and attracts over half a million visitors annually. Many of the tourists arrive by boat, and the natural harbours are frequently visited. Boat presence may affect bottom substrates through anchoring, and pollution could also occur in the form of leaching antifouling paints, fuel residue (PAHs) and litter. This thesis set out to investigate if there are any lingering impacts resulting from boat tourism in Kosterhavet and suggests management efforts in those cases there are. Through studies using a video sled, data from two consecutive years revealed visible anchor traces on soft unvegetated bottoms, and number of traces were also linked to number of bottom anchoring boats. Furthermore, it was found that visitors engage in bottom anchoring at locations where sensitive habitats like eelgrass and oyster beds are located, which may result in harm to both habitat types. Sediment samples taken in both natural harbours and small marinas unexpectedly showed presence of long since banned antifouling products like TBT, but also more recently prohibited biocides like irgarol and diuron. This suggests that they are still in use. Moreover, water samples from the area show that the currently used antifouling compound copper, is likely to exceed threshold values set by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (SwAM) during peak boat season. Concentrations of PAHs were found to be below threshold values for water, but they are also known to have low water solubility and are more likely to be bound to particles. From the video data, occurrence of seafloor litter was also obtained, and data on beach litter from reference sites on the Swedish west coast was downloaded from the OSPAR beach litter database. Seafloor litter, in contradiction to beach litter, was at a much higher degree found to have an origin related to recreational activities. This suggest that beach litter stem from other activities in the park, or are brought to the area by currents. A threat analysis based on the leisure boat related threats; anchoring, antifouling, PAHs and litter were performed. Threats were analysed with respect to their potential impact to the soft bottom values; eelgrass, oysters and blue mussels. The sum of these threats showed that eelgrass was highly impacted by anchoring, but oysters were more severely affected when all threats were considered. This type of threat analysis can be of great value to park managers, as they need to make prioritizations regarding how to use their often limited resources. Based on these finding, it is, among others, suggested that bottom anchoring should not be allowed at locations where eelgrass and oyster beds occur, and that bottom friendly mooring solutions should be made available to avoid negative impact on these habitats.

Ocean contamination by plastics is a global issue. Although ingestion of plastic debris by sea turtles has been widely documented, contamination by microplastics (<5mm) is poorly known and likely to be under-reported. We developed a microplastic extraction protocol for examining green turtle (Chelonia mydas) chyme, which is multifarious in nature, by modifying and combining pre-established methods used to separate microplastics from organic matter and sediments. This protocol consists of visual inspection, nitric acid digestion, emulsification of residual fat, density separation, and chemical identification by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. This protocol enables the extraction of polyethylene, high-density polyethylene, (aminoethyl) polystyrene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride microplastics >100μm. Two macroplastics and seven microplastics (two plastic paint chips and five synthetic fabric particles) were isolated from subsamples of two green turtles. Our results highlight the need for more research towards understanding the impact of microplastics on these threatened marine reptiles.

The UK Marine Management Organisation (MMO) tasked the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) with reviewing the current UK dispersant efficacy testing procedures. The aim was to identify possibilities to increase standardisation, improve health and safety performance and explore harmonisation possibilities with international dispersant efficacy testing procedures. The US EPA ‘Baffled Flask Test’ (BFT) was adopted, implemented and validated as a new standard method in the UK. The outputs from this study suggest that dispersant efficacy results from the adopted BFT test and the currently used protocol are in a similar range and results presented by the US EPA.As a result, the transition to the adopted BFT test will require minimal changes in the assessment of the results or reporting and increase harmonisation between tests used in the UK and North America.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are chemicals employed in human healthcare, veterinary, medical diagnosis, and cosmetics, which have increasingly polluted water sources. Extensive research has demonstrated constructed wetlands (CWs) technology as a low-cost but efficient approach for PPCPs removal. There has been a growing interest to better understand the degradation mechanisms of PPCPs in wetland cells. Data corroborated in this review show that these degradation mechanisms include photolytic degradation, adsorption, phytodegradation, and microbial degradation. Each of these degradation mechanisms performs differently in wetland cells. This review also highlights the lack of research works to quantify the contribution of these degradation mechanisms to the overall efficiency of CWs to remove PPCPs as a major bottleneck for further application of this technology. The ultimate goal is to apply and prioritize a suitable degradation mechanism for successfully eliminating corresponding PPCPs. This review, therefore, provides further insights to (i) elucidate the importance of these removal mechanisms, and (ii) quantify their contribution in overall PPCPs removal processes. This review aims to understand the importance and contribution of degradation mechanisms of PPCPs removal in constructed wetlands. RECENT FINDINGS: The degradation mechanisms of PPCPs in constructed wetlands depended on various conditions; yet, which factors are preferred? Furthermore, the number of research works, related to quantifying the contribution of degradation mechanisms, is limited. The hydrophobic/hydrophilic character, reflecting as log Kₒw (or log Dₒw), is the most commonly used. The photolytic degradation is appropriate with low and moderate hydrophobic values (log Dₒw from − 2.3 to 3). The role of adsorption is moderate, while it is more efficient with the higher hydrophobic compounds. The media is important for plant growth and micro-organism community development. The plant uptake is better for PPCPs with higher hydrophobicity (log Kₒw from 1 to 4). However, it is difficult to quantify their contribution and the number of related studies is limited.
