Loricate ciliates as an indicator of eutrophication status in the estuarine and coastal waters

Owing to the environmental sensitivity of ciliate species, the monitoring and assessment of these communities can indicate the health of the aquatic environment. Sampling for loricate ciliates was carried out during different seasons at three different locations in the estuarine and coastal waters of Kochi, Southwest coast of India. The loricate ciliate community comprising of 27 species belonging to 10 genera revealed significant differences among the three sampling locations. The maximum numerical abundance and less species diversity of loricate ciliates were recorded at the estuarine locations whereas the minimum abundance and more species diversity were encountered in the coastal waters. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed that Tintinnopsis beroidea and Tintinnopsis uruguayensis were correlated positively with nutrients in the estuarine environment, which receives large amount of anthropogenic inputs. Thus, we propose that these two loricate ciliates may be considered as a potential bioindicator of eutrophication status in marine ecosystems.

The work presented here aims at comparing monitoring of S-metolachlor, the major pesticide in use in the Arcachon Bay (South West of France, transitional coastal area), by chemical analysis (monthly passive sampling) and contaminant dissipation modeling from sources (Mars-2D model). The global strategy consisted in i) identifying the major sources of S-metolachlor to the Bay, ii) monitoring these sources for 12 months, and iii) comparing modeled data in the Bay based on measured inputs, to chemical measurements made inside the Bay along with the 12-month source monitoring. Results first showed that the major S-metolachlor surface inputs to the Arcachon Bay are mainly from one single source. Modeled and measured data were in good agreement at 5 sites in the Bay, both in terms of concentration range and seasonal trends. Modeling thus offers a cost-effective solution for monitoring contaminants in transitional waters, overcoming in addition the technical limitations for measuring pg L⁻¹ or lower levels in coastal waters. However, we highlighted that secondary sources may affect accuracy at local level.

Eight beach/dune systems located along the Atlantico Department, Caribbean coast of Colombia were surveyed to determine litter influences over its scenic quality. Application of the Coastal Scenic Evaluation System (CSES) categorized these systems into two of the five available classes. Five of the investigated beach/dune systems belong to Class IV, while three systems correspond to V. Classes I, II and III were not found. Along these beach/dune systems, a total amount of 1908 litter items were collected with average abundances of 4.2 items/m2. Currently, 82% of surveyed sites are under an unacceptable condition of cleanness. User's habits as well as bad litter management practices are directly responsible for the decline of scenic quality of the Atlantico Department beach/dune systems. Litter management must be centered on strategies to eliminate or minimize litter sources. Specific remedial actions need to be defined and developed.

Based on a survey conducted from June to July 2013, aragonite saturation state variation and control in the river-dominated marginal BoHai and Yellow seas were investigated. Surface water Ωarag ranged from 2.0–3.8, whereas subsurface water Ωarag was generally lower than 2.0. Temperature changes had a strong influence on Ωarag through induced CO2 solubility changes in seawater. Riverine freshwater input decreased Ωarag in the Changjiang and Yalu river estuaries, but induced higher Ωarag in the Yellow River estuary. Biological processes had opposite effects on Ωarag, whereby elevated biological production led to the highest Ωarag in the South Yellow Sea surface water, whereas net community respiration/remineralization induced low Ωarag in subsurface water. Stratification affected the level and scale of low Ωarag in subsurface water. By the year 2100, surface water with Ωarag > 2.0 will disappear except for the Yellow River estuary, and most of the subsurface water will develop substantial aragonite undersaturation.

Concentrations of 6 trace metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the muscle of 2 sharks (Galeus melastomus and Scyliorhinus canicula), 4 teleosts (Helicolenus dactylopterus, Lepidorhombus boscii, Micromesistius poutassou and Phycis blennoides) and 1 crustacean (Nephrops norvegicus) were compared between the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean) and the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean Sea). Although average concentrations and the trace element pollution index were generally higher in the Gulf of Lions, significant differences between the two ecosystems were only found for Zn for Helicolenus dactylopterus, and for Ag and Cu for the crustacean N. norvegicus. Moreover, some relationships between trophic level or size and metal concentrations were found for these two species. The absence of clear pattern may result from the blurring effect of contamination and excretion that may act differentially for all species and all elements.

The purpose of this study was to quantify phosphorus bioavailability and various forms of this element in surface sediments of the southern Caspian Sea. To do, sediment samples were collected from different depths in autumn 2015 using a Van Veen Grab. Phosphorus forms were recognized by a sequential extraction procedure (SEDEX). Results revealed that the range of total phosphorus (TP) was between 431ppm and 594ppm with a mean value of 535.25±45.05ppm. Organic phosphorus (OP) ranged from 62 to 99ppm and contributed 14.85±2.21% of total phosphorus in average. The contents of loosely phosphorus, iron-bound phosphorus, authigenic phosphorus and detrital phosphorus varied 35–55ppm, 50–94ppm, 125–189ppm and 152–217ppm, respectively. Generally, inorganic phosphorus (IP) was between 365 and 522ppm which comprised 81.9–88.53% of total phosphorus. Findings showed levels of different phosphorus forms in a descending order: detrital P>Authigenic P>Organic P>Fe-P>Loosely P. Bioavailable phosphorus concentration was between 153ppm and 240ppm and consisted 37.21±3% of total phosphorus. Based on molar ratio of TOC/OP, organic matter obtained from the studied stations suggested a terrestrial origin.

Two fuel oils and two crude oils were subjected to a 60-day weathering simulation experiment, and the effects of weathering on some common parameters for aromatics and aromatic δ¹³C values were studied. The results show that weathering of all oil samples affected little the DBT/P (dibenzothiophene/phenanthrene) ratio and methylphenanthrene distribution fraction. Four oil samples could be distinguished only by the DBT/P ratio. The effect of weathering on isotopes in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was small. The results show that the types of four oil samples can be distinguished, while Kuwait and Russia crude oils cannot be discriminated from each other totally by double-coordinate two-dimensional maps for aromatic δ¹³C; all of the oil samples can be distinguished by principal component analysis of δ¹³C for aromatics, the relationship of DBT/P and PAHs δ¹³C values. Therefore, the δ¹³C value of aromatics can be used as an alternative index for the analysis of oil spills.

Large seaweed cultivation has proven an effective means to inhibit harmful microalgae at experimental scales and battle eutrophication in Chinese coastal waters, but essentially there is a lack of field-scale studies to explore the underlying mechanism. Here we present a 1.5-year-long time series of particulate organic matter (POM) and settling particulate matter (SPM) concentrations from an integrated aquaculture of Gracilaria lemaneiformis off the coast of Nan'ao Island, South China from April 2014 to August 2015. The microscopic examination and geochemical characteristics show that the POM mainly consisted of microalgae. The mean POM concentration increased 99.8%, 71.2%, 45.8% and 111.9% at the four sampling sites during the non-cultivation period, while decreased 25.5%, 17.3%, 12.2% and 20.3%, respectively, during the seaweed cultivation period. These results suggest that the large scale seaweed cultivation can remove excess nutrients and inhibit microalgal growth, thereby contributing to the improvement of coastal marine aquaculture environment.

The world's largest green tide originated from the Jiangsu Shoal of the Yellow Sea was due to fast reproduction of floating green macroalgae (Ulva prolifera). It brought significant impacts on marine environment and ecosystem in the Yellow Sea. In this study, we examined the expansion of green tide from the Jiangsu Shoal during the period from 29 April to 25 June 2016. Using high-resolution satellite images, we revealed a declined growth rate during the northward drifting of early-stage green tide for the first time, i.e., the green tide had higher growth rate (up to 25% per day) in the turbid waters of the Jiangsu Shoal in May and a lower growth rate (low to 3% per day) in the relatively clear waters in the middle of the western Yellow Sea in June, which suggests that water clarity might not be the key factor controlling the growth rate of the floating macroalgae in the surface waters under natural conditions. The high growth rate led to shortened time windows for controlling the green tide by employing macroalgae collecting campaigns at the initial sites of the green tide, which was no more than 14 days in the 2016 case.

The present work deals with assessment of baseline radionuclide concentration in marine organisms around selected coasts of Maharashtra, India. This baseline study highlights concentrations of natural and fallout radionuclides in finfish and shellfish species found in the surrounding seawater. Water and fish samples were collected, processed, and analyzed for 238U, 226Ra, 228Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs by high-resolution gamma spectrometry. 238U, 226Ra, 228Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs concentrations were found to be in the range of ≤1.5, ≤2.0, ≤0.4, ≤1.5, ≤8.0 to 258, and ≤0.2 Bq/kg, respectively. The seasonal study revealed the maximum concentration in premonsoon season. Activity concentrations were higher in pelagic fish than those in demersal fish. A higher concentration factor was reported in shellfish than in finfish.
