Simultaneous grading of microplastic size sampling in the Small Islands of Bintan water, Indonesia 全文

Despite Indonesia being considered as second highest source of marine plastic debris in the world, few studies have been conducted on plastic debris in Indonesia, particularly microplastics. By using a simple device to simultaneously grade floating microplastics, we investigated microplastic contamination in the ecosystem of small islands in Bintan Regency, Riau Island Province, Indonesia. The average number of floating microplastics from 11 beach stations around Bintan Island was 122.8 ± 67.8 pieces per station, which corresponds to 0.45 pieces per m3 and represents a low-medium microplastic pollution level compared to the levels of other marine environments worldwide. Polymer identification using Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) Spectroscopy successfully identified Polyethylene (PE) (17.3 ± 8.3%), Low Density PE (17.6 ± 5.5%), Oxidized LDPE (<0.1%), Polypropylene (PP) (54 ± 13%), PP Atactic (<0.4%), PP isotactic (<0.2%) and Polystyrene (PS) (10.4 ± 9.1%) from different forms and shapes of microplastics i.e., fragments (50.9 ± 4.9%), fibers (26.2 ± 3%), granule (13.1 ± 3.8%) and films (9.8 ± 5.1%). We suggest that the generation of these microplastics was likely due to physicochemical processes, including biological degradation in this tropical ecosystem. Environmental implication of microplastics in this area increases the problems associated with ingestion, bioaccumulation and biomagnification across trophic levels and co-pollutants absorbed onto microplastics.

In this study, concentrations of heavy metals, rare earth elements (REEs), Uranium (U) and Thorium (Th) of the actinide group were determined from Linggi estuary sediment samples by neutron activation analysis (NAA) and inductive coupled plasma - mass spectrometry techniques. The geo-accumulation (Igeo) and ecological risk index (Ri) values were calculated to identify the quality status of Linggi estuary sediments. Results indicated Linggi estuary was polluted by arsenic (As), lead (Pb) and antimony (Sb). REEs, U and Th showed significant increase of concentration in Linggi estuary sediments. Ri of Linggi estuary was categorised as low to considerable ecological risk, which indicates no significant to moderate effect on the majority of the sediment-dwelling organisms. Correlation matrix and principal component analysis assessed pollution sources to be both natural and anthropogenic.

Mineral extraction from the seabed has experienced a recent surge of interest from both the mining industry and marine scientists. While improved methods of geological investigation have enabled the mapping of new seafloor mineral reserves, the ecological impacts of mining in both the deep sea and the shallow seabed are poorly known. This paper presents a synthesis of the empirical evidence from experimental seabed mining and parallel industries to infer the effects of seabed mineral extraction on marine ecosystems, focusing on polymetallic nodules and ferromanganese concretions. We use a problem-structuring framework to evaluate causal relationships between pressures caused by nodule extraction and the associated changes in marine ecosystems. To ensure that the rationale behind impact assessments is clear, we propose that future impact assessments use pressure-specific expert elicitation. We further discuss integrating ecosystem services in the impact assessments and the implications of current methods for environmental risk assessments.

Marine oil spill pollution is an important environmental problem in the world, especially crude oil-soaked marine sediments, because they are difficult to be remediated. In this study, in situ bioremediation of oil-soaked sediment was performed in the middle of the Bohai Sea. Oil-degrading bacteria were adsorbed on powdery zeolite (PZ)/granular zeolites (GZ) surfaces and then wrapped with poly-γ glutamic acid (γ-PGA). Settling column and wave flume experiments were conducted to model marine conditions and to select appropriate biological reagents. The optimal conditions were as follows: the average diameter of GZ 3 mm, mass ratio of GZ/PZ 2:1, and concentration of γ-PGA 7%. After bioremediation, over 50% of most oil-spilled pollutants n-alkanes (C12 to C27) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were degraded in 70 days. This work resulted in a successful trial of in situ bioremediation of oil-soaked marine sediments.

The surface sediments (0–4cm, n=6) from Chabahar Bay were analyzed to assess the concentrations, composition, and potential eco-hazards of associated PAHs. The range of ∑16 PAHs' concentration was 25.75–312.38ngg−1 dw, with mean and median levels of 126.7 and 55.12ngg−1 dw, respectively. The bay was classified as a region with low to moderate PAH pollution. The sources of PAHs varied, and 2–3-ring compounds were dominant (37–90%). There was no significant correlation between TOC/grain size and levels of PAHs. Total carcinogenic PAHs ranged from 0.21 to 79.68ngg−1 dw, and benzo(a)pyrene was the main constituent of calculated toxic equivalencies. The bay sediments were rarely hazardous and could not address narcotic hazards for the benthic community. Biota-sediment accumulation was not predicted for the examined coral Acropora valida. In equilibrium conditions, release of ∑16PAHs from the bay sediments was estimated to be 0.536μgL−1 at its maximum.

A total of 43 surface sediment collected from rivers and the estuaries in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region and Mirs Bay from the South China were analyzed for twelve halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer system. Their levels, spacial distribution, congener profiles and possible sources were investigated. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) was the predominant contaminant (1.520–1714ng/g dw) in the study area exceeding those of PBDEs (8.090–595.8ng/g dw), implying that DBDPE has been the predominant HFR products in this region in recent years in addition to PBDEs. Whereas the ratio of [DBDPE/BDE 209] varied among samples, this is indicative of different usage patterns of HFRs between PRD region and Mirs Bay. The PBDEs congener was dominated by BDE 209, with the average value accounting for 86.8% of the total PBDE in the sediment samples.

Intertidal surface sediments collected from Zhelin Bay, the largest mariculture base of eastern Guangdong Province of China, were analyzed for total metal concentrations and chemical speciation. Average total metal concentrations (mg/kg) were 0.063 (Cd), 35.69 (Pb), 23.07 (Cr), 7.50 (Ni), 7.95 (Cu), 74.95 (Zn), and 751.32 (Mn). Concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, and Mn were significantly higher than the corresponding background values of Zhelin Bay. All studied metals were dominated by residual fractions, whereas the second relatively higher average portions of Cd (24.10%) and Mn (15.17%) were strongly associated with the acid-soluble fraction. Overall, the intertidal surface sediments of Zhelin Bay were only slightly polluted based on the pollution load index (PLI), with a 21% probability of toxicity based on the mean effects range–median quotient. The metals Cd and Mn posed medium to high risk levels based on the method of risk assessment code (RAC).

The damaging effects of marine debris on wildlife are often noted through the observation of animals that ingest and/or become entangled in debris. Yet, few studies have evaluated the effects of marine litter on benthic habitats. The aim of this study was to investigate if the presence of plastic bags has any effect on benthic macrofauna in an estuary located in an urban area in North-eastern Brazil. Biogeochemical and macrofauna samples were obtained from 10 different deposition locations (location factor), under, border and distant (treatment factor) from plastic bags. The results did not show any significant alterations in the biogeochemical parameters of the sediment due to treatment effect except for summed microphytobenthic pigments. The macrobenthic community structure responded to treatment. The greatest dissimilarity (34%) was between samples that were under and distant. Effects occurred despite the high dynamics of deposition-resuspension of plastic bags and the dominance of opportunistic species. Changes in community structure are a complex result of plastic bags effects on species ecological interactions in the polluted estuarine environment, attracting deposit feeders, diminishing suspension feeders and providing mechanical protection against predation by seabirds.

National and international regulations require that ships' ballast water is treated to minimize the risk of introducing potentially invasive species. A common approach employed by commercial ballast water management systems is chlorination. This study presents the algal toxicity findings for three chlorination-based BWMS and their implications to environmental safety of port waters receiving treated ballast water from ships. Discharged treated ballast water from all three BWMS was toxic to algae with IC25s (25% growth inhibition) ranging from 9.9% to 17.9%, despite having total residual oxidant concentrations below 0.02 mg/l, based on Whole Effluent Toxicity assays. When held at 4 °C, some of the ballast water samples continued to exhibit toxic effects with no observed effect concentrations as low as 18% after a 134 day holding time. Thirteen individual disinfection by-products were measured above the detected limit at the time of discharge. No correlation between DBPs and algal toxicity was observed.

Tropical sea cucumber fisheries are generally traditional, small-scale, multispecies and poorly managed. Many recent studies have improved our knowledge on the biology and ecology of the commercially important species; the main results are analysed and the remaining gaps discussed. The fisheries and the patterns of trade changes during the last decade are presented from the data available and confirm overexploitation in the traditional Indian Ocean and West Pacific countries and territories. Several Latino-American countries now have active fisheries. Despite the management and conservation issues which have recently received more attention at international, regional and national levels, more measures are still needed at all these levels, to ensure sustainable exploitations of these resources.
