Bioavailable trace metals and their ecological risks in the tourist beaches of the Southeast coast of India

The concentration of Acid Leachable Trace Metals (ALTMs) was assessed in urbanized tourist beaches (96 samples from Marina beach, 34 samples from Edward Elliot's beach, and 28 samples from Silver beach) of southeast coast of India. The concentration of metals accumulated in the beach sediment was less than the Upper Continental Crust (UCC) background reference values. The mean enrichment of ALTMs in the studied urban tourist beaches showed the following descending order: Marina beach – Cr > Pb > Ni > Zn > Cu > Mn > Co; Edward Elliot's beach – Cr > Pb > Ni > Mn > Co > Zn > Cu; Silver beach – Cr > Pb > Ni > Co > Mn > Cu > Zn. The ALTMs such as Fe, Mn, Co, Cu, and Zn were probably derived from natural weathering and mild anthropogenic influences whereas other metals were derived from anthropogenic induced factors.

The article is devoted to the study of the activity values of natural radionuclides ⁴⁰K, ²³²Th and ²²⁶Ra and technogenic radionuclide ¹³⁷Cs in the bottom sediments of the Barents Sea, which is distinguished from the rest of the Arctic seas by the fact that the largest number of radiation objects are concentrated here. The activity levels of natural radionuclides were within the range of activity values corresponding to marine sediments around the world. The highest radionuclide activities were found within the deepwater shelf of the Barents Sea. The current level of activity of the technogenic radionuclide ¹³⁷Cs is low and does not exceed 6.5 Bq·kg⁻¹. However, due to global climatic changes, the secondary source of radiation pollution of the sea may be the Novaya Zemlya ice sheet, in which huge quantities of technogenic radionuclides were deposited during atmospheric tests of the 1950s and 1960s.

Various pollutants keep threatening the environmental status of the Mediterranean Sea, while the Marine Strategy Framework Directive requires that Good Environmental Status needs to be achieved in European Seas by 2020. Previous reviews already established that the ambition levels of national Programmes of Measures (PoMs) are low. This study focuses on the analyses of the levels of coherence and coordination of the proposed PoMs in the Mediterranean, concentrating on nutrient, contaminant, and marine litter pollution, as well as the introduction of non-indigenous species. Coherence and pollinator analyses of the proposed measures of Mediterranean EU Member States (MS) were performed. The results demonstrate that while the current coordination between MS is almost non-existent, several measures are already addressing the same pressures in similar ways and could be easily coordinated on transnational level. Increased coordination and coherence of PoMs in the Mediterranean are vital for achieving good environmental status in future years.

Through collaboration with Inuit hunters, we examined the stomach contents of 142 seals (ringed seals [Phoca hispida; n = 135], bearded seals [Erignathus barbatus; n = 6], and one harbour seal [Phoca vitualina; n = 1]) hunted between 2007 and 2019 from communities around Nunavut to assess whether seals in the eastern Canadian Arctic ingest and retain plastics in their stomachs. The seals in this study ranged from juveniles to adults of up to 30 years of age, and 55% of the seals were males. We found no evidence of plastic ingestion in any of the seals suggesting that seals in Nunavut are not accumulating plastics (>425 μm) in their stomachs. These data provide important baseline information for future plastic pollution monitoring programs in the Arctic.

Anthropogenic sound can affect fish behaviour and physiology which may affect their well-being. However, it remains a major challenge to translate such effects to consequences for fitness at an individual and population level. For this, energy budget models have been developed, but suitable data to parametrize these models are lacking. A first step towards such parametrization concerns the objective quantification of behavioural states at high resolution. We experimentally exposed individual Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in a net pen to the playback of seismic airgun sounds. We demonstrated that individual cod in the net pen did not change their swimming patterns immediately at the onset of the sound exposure. However, several individuals changed their time spent in three different behavioural states during the 1 h exposure. This may be translated to changes in energy expenditure and provide suitable input for energy budget models that allow predictions about fitness and population consequences.

Negative impacts of invasive species are widely accepted, but there is increasing evidence that neutral or positive effects are more prevalent than initially recognized, particularly for species which are of different functional / trophic group than the invader. We used a BACI design to examine how fish communities responded to the invasion of Halimeda incrassata, an ecosystem engineer which colonizes sandy habitats in the Western Mediterranean. While invasion did not alter overall species richness or diversity, we detected positive, negative and neutral responses by different fish species, which has important ecological and socio-economic implications. Contrasting responses likely result from different alterations that this alga conferred, putatively increasing prey availability via habitat creation, or limiting burial and camouflage abilities of fish. Our results highlight that effects of ecosystem engineers can be multiple and complex, and that predictions of invasive species are not straight forward.

Litter is a well-known problem for marine species; however, we still know little about the extent to which they're affected by microplastics. In this study, we analyse the presence of this type of debris in Western Mediterranean striped dolphins' intestinal contents over three decades. Results indicated that frequency was high, as 90.5% of dolphins contained microplastics. Of these microplastics, 73.6% were fibres, 23.87% were fragments and 2.53% were primary pellets. In spite of the high frequency of occurrence, microplastic amount per dolphin was relatively low and highly variable (mean ± SD = 14.9 ± 22.3; 95% CI: 9.58–23.4). Through FT-IR spectrometry, we found that polyacrylamide, typically found in synthetic clothes, was the most common plastic polymer. Here, we establish a starting point for further research on how microplastics affect this species' health and discuss the use of striped dolphins as indicators of microplastics at sea.

The study, for the first time, evaluated the leaching rate of zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) from human skins which were applied with three commercial sunscreens containing nZnO as an active ingredient. The leaching rate of nZnO varied greatly among the sunscreens, with a range of 8–72% (mean ± SD: 45% ± 33%). We further investigated their toxicities to the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus. We found that 96-h median lethal concentrations of the three sunscreens to T. japonicus were > 5000, 230.6, and 43.0 mg chemical L⁻¹, respectively, equivalent to Zn²⁺ concentrations at >82.5, 3.2, and 1.2 mg Zn L⁻¹, respectively. Exposure to the individual sunscreens at environmentally realistic concentrations for 96 h led to up-regulation of antioxidant genes in T. japonicus, while they triggered the release of reactive oxygen species based on the results of in vivo assays. Evidently, these nZnO-included sunscreens can cause oxidative stress and hence pose risk to marine organisms.

Investigating the heterogeneous distribution pattern of plastic pollution in river systems is useful for better understanding the transport pathways of plastics from land to sea. Therefore, we analyzed samples from 17 sites to evaluate the distribution pattern of microplastics (MPs) in Minjiang River Watershed. The MP concentrations ranged between 0.12 and 2.72 n/L, with higher microplastic concentrations located in urban areas with greater population and gross domestic product (GDP) densities. MP concentrations were positively correlated with population density, GDP density, and built-up land use percentage, suggesting that increasing urbanization level will lead to greater plastic pollution. MP concentrations spanning the upstream and downstream sides of the SK Hydropower Dam showed decreasing trends, suggesting that MP settling would occur behind the dam and Shuikou Reservoir might serve as a sink for MPs. This study provides useful insight for revealing the effects of urbanization and dams on spatial distribution of riverine MPs.

Pollution in the Arabian Gulf has risen in recent decades due to rapid development in the region. We studied 21 elements in the liver, gastrointestinal (GI) tract and muscles of the Indian anchovy (Stolephorus indicus) to characterize bioaccumulation in this abundant forage fish. Mean concentrations (μg/g wet weight) of elements ranged as follows: Cd: 0.1–8.0; Cr: 0.1–24.0; Cu: 1.2–24.0; Ni: 0.3–76.5; Ca: 1237.0–15,270.0; S: 2966.0–7467.0; Zn: 7.1–247.0; V: 0.1–27.0; Hg: 0.04–0.18 and Sr: 8.1–191.0. Zn, Cu, Cr, and Cd in the tissues exceeded the maximum permissible limit recommended by FAO, WHO and EC. We suggest that bioaccumulation in fish could be a hazard for human consumption. Therefore, further monitoring is needed to better characterize pollutant levels in fish of higher trophic levels in the Arabian Gulf.
