The fate and behavior of the Sanchi oil spill during January–February 2018 was simulated by coupling an oil spill model and satellite observations with meteo-oceanographic forcing. Extensive validation tests were performed for winds, currents, surface slick, stranded oil and oil fate. A series of hindcast experiments was designed to take into account the uncertainties in oil amount, environmental forcing and model parameters. The simulations confirmed that the stable large-scale Kuroshio acted as the primary driving force. Most oil followed the Kuroshio's large-meander path, rapidly passing through the East China Sea to the waters south of Japan. The wind, appearing as the secondary transport factor, did not change the path of this large-scale current, but did contribute to the drift of surface oil. The different fates for heavy fuel oil and condensate in the accident were also compared quantitatively and discussed in this study.

Ficopomatus enigmaticus was adopted as model species for ecotoxicological bioassay, with its larval development as endpoint. Two different populations of the same species, collected in areas far from each other (Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean), were exposed to multi-walled carbon nanotubes, a class of emerging pollutants with a constantly increasing relevance in the landscape of nanomaterials production. Moreover, a molecular analysis based on Cyt b amplification and sequencing, was carried out to confirm that both populations belong to the same species. The aim of the present work was to strengthen existing results about F. enigmaticus relevance in ecotoxicological bioassays, adding the variable of population effect. For both populations the concentration-response curve of effect at different toxicant concentrations was similar and, at certain concentrations, overlapping, confirming the ecological relevance of the assay. These results posed an interesting acceptance on the introduction of this species as model in ecotoxicological bioassay scenery, underlining the relevance of a widespread wild species to compare effects of chemicals and environmental samples over large distances using the same bioassay.

Impulsive sounds generated during seismic surveys have elicited behavioral responses in marine mammals and could cause hearing impairment or injury. Mitigating exposure to seismic sound often relies on real-time marine mammal detection. Detection performance is influenced by detection method, environmental conditions, and observer experience. We conducted a field comparison of real-time detections made by marine mammal observers (MMOs), a rotating infrared (IR) camera, and via passive acoustic monitoring (PAM). Data were collected from a 38 m research vessel offshore Atlantic Canada. Our results indicate that overall detection rates increase when complementary methods are used. MMOs and PAM are likely the most effective combination during high seas and precipitation. PAM and IR can be used in darkness. In good visibility, MMOs with IR or PAM should increase detections. Our results illustrate the importance of addressing false positive IR detections, matching system capabilities to sea conditions/species of interest, and employing experienced observers.

Two experiments were executed to assess the feasibility of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) transfer to fish tissues via MPs as a vector. PCBs that occur in the marine environment were tested for their adsorption to four different MP types. PCB congeners showed the highest adsorption levels to Polypropylene homo-polymer. The uptake of PCBs through MP ingestion was tested in an outdoor mesocosm using the herbivorous rabbitfish, Siganus rivulatus in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Polypropylene homo-polymer particles (0.3–5.0 mm) pre saturated with 11 PCB congeners, in two concentrations (500 ng/g and 5000 ng/g), were mixed with dough and offered to the fish. PCBs were identified after two weeks in fish muscle tissues, but not in the liver. These results suggest that ingestion of contaminated MP by rabbitfish might harm them in the long run, and perhaps even those who consume them on a regular basis, e.g. rabbitfish predators and humans.

Laboratories from 14 countries (with different levels of expertise in radionuclide measurements and ²¹⁰Pb dating) participated in an interlaboratory comparison exercise (ILC) related to the application of ²¹⁰Pb sediment dating technique within the framework of the IAEA Coordinated Research Project. The laboratories were provided with samples from a composite sediment core and were required to provide massic activities of several radionuclides and an age versus depth model from the obtained results, using the most suitable ²¹⁰Pb dating model. Massic concentrations of Zn and Cu were also determined to be used for chronology validation. The ILC results indicated good analytical performances while the dating results didn't demonstrate the same degree of competence in part due to the different experience in dating of the participant laboratories. The ILC exercise enabled evaluation of the difficulties faced by laboratories implementing ²¹⁰Pb dating methods and identified some limitations in providing reliable chronologies.

Over the past fifty years, interactions between anthropogenic debris and a wide range of marine species have increased. In cetaceans, the most frequent interactions have occurred through ingestion and/or entanglement, with results ranging from minor injuries to death in affected animals. While debris ingestion is widely documented in odontocetes, records are scarcer in mysticetes. This study describes the finding of plastic litter in the digestive tract of a southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) juvenile male, which was found dead on the shores of Golfo Nuevo, Chubut, Argentina in 2014. During the examination of intestinal contents, anthropogenic waste was found and classified as macro-debris (25 mm-1 m). Although this whale likely died of causes not related to this finding, it is the first record of anthropogenic debris ingestion for this species. This event adds information about the potential impact of human-made debris on a variety of aquatic species and ecosystems.

Marine microorganisms play an irreplaceable role in removing spilled oil. Zhoushan archipelago has one of the busiest ports and oil stockpiles in China. However, little is known about which and how fast oil-degrading microorganisms could biodegrade spilled oil here. By combining ¹⁴C-/³H-based radiotracer assays and MiSeq sequencing, we report the successive pattern of microbial oil-degrading activities and community compositions. The biodegradation rates of alkanes and PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) were significantly stimulated by oil addition, and reached their maximum after incubation for 3 and 7 days, respectively. Meanwhile, the abundances of alkB and phnAc genes increased and the bacterial communities continuously shifted. Potential oil-degrading bacteria Alcanivorax, Erythrobacter were the dominant degraders by day 3, whereas the dominant degraders shifted to C1-B045, Alteromonas, Pseudohongiella in the later period. These results provide valuable insights into the cooperative system of the versatile oil-degrading bacteria in successively biodegrading complex oil hydrocarbons in oil spills.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were quantified in archive samples of dorsal white muscle of the wild Bluefin tuna (BFT) (n = 9) collected in the central Adriatic. PCBs were the predominant organochlorine (OC) compounds (60.8–69.4% of the total OC load) found. The contribution of HCB and ΣHCHs was significantly lower, ranging from <LOD (α- and β-HCH) to 1.5% (γ-HCH). p,p′-DDE was the predominant OCP compound (60–89% of the ΣOCPs). PCB and DDT levels were comparable to the values previously found for tuna from the Mediterranean Sea, known as one of the areas most polluted by PCBs.

Twenty-three metals were evaluated in Indian Mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) collected at nine fishing settlements along the coastal waters of Visakhapatnam. The muscle tissue was analyzed for metals using 7700 Series ICP-MS. The metal concentration obtained was in the order of Al > Fe > Zn > Cr > Sr > Mn > Cu > As > Se > Rb > Ag > Ba > Pb > Ni > V > Li > Cs > Cd > Co > U > Ga > Be > Ti in all samples. Most of the heavy metals were within the prescribed norms of the FAO, WHO, EC, and MHSAC, except for Al (34.66–58.55 μg/g), Cr (2.62–3.24 μg/g), Mn (0.86–1.36 μg/g), As (0.67–1.47 μg/g), and Pb (0.06–0.37 μg/g). The study reveals that the fish are not entirely safe for consumption and the pollution levels are on the borderline but can be remedied.

Sandstone reefs may be considered a unique geomorphologic feature within the subtropical Southwestern Atlantic Ocean region; however, biodiversity on these reefs has received little to no attention. Herein, we recorded the fish assemblage and benthic cover of sandstone reefs between 23 and 29 m depth in Southern Brazil and evidenced potential threats to habitat health. Video analysis and underwater censuses recorded 30 fish species. The unexpected high biomass of Epinephelus marginatus indicated that sandstone reefs may contain suitable habitats for the recovery of this endangered species. A rich benthic coverage including bryozoans, algae, hydrozoans, sponges, and octocorals increased local habitat structural complexity. However, a wide diversity of tangled fishing gear and broken sandstone slabs suggested that a valuable feature from Southern Brazil seascape is being lost by cumulative fishing impacts. An extensive mapping of sandstone reefs is urgently needed for better delineation of marine protected areas network in Southeast and Southern Brazil.
