Pesticides in water and sediments of Chacahua-Pastoria Lagoon System, Oaxaca, Mexico

This is the first report about the presence of pesticide residues in water and sediments from Chacahua-Pastoria Lagoon System in the Oaxaca Coast, Mexico. Organochlorine and organophosphate pesticides were analyzed in water and sediment samples collected during rainy and dry seasons in 2018. The pesticides extraction was carried out by 525.2 EPA and QuEChERS methods for water and sediments samples, respectively. The quantification was done by gas chromatography coupled to electron microcapture (μECD) and flame photometric (FPD) detectors. Univariate and multivariate analysis were carried out to evaluate the distribution patterns, comparing between lagoons, seasons and matrices. The spatial distribution of malathion and organochlorines in water showed the highest values near to adjacent land with some patterns differences. DDT was the most frequent in water and sediments samples, showed the highest concentrations in the Pastoria Lagoon. These results indicate the need to establish a permanent monitoring programs to implement mitigation measures.

The present study aims to assess the effects of contamination of the Agadir bay coasts using bivalves as a biomonitoring sentinel species. Seasonal variations of biochemical composition in terms of total protein content and oxidative stress biomarkers including glutathione-S-transferase, malondialdehyde, catalase and acetylcholinesterase were evaluated in the soft tissues of Scrobicularia plana and Donax trunculus specimens. The latter were collected from two sites in Agadir bay during two-year span (2018–2020). The Integrated Biomarker Response Index (IBR) was performed to classify the stress response in both species and to assess the level of exposure to xenobiotics. The data showed maximum annual values of acetylcholinesterase and malondialdehyde for Donax trunculus in Agadir beach (AG) with 6.25 nmol/mn/mg and 3 nmol/mg of protein, respectively. Those of catalase and glutathione-S-transferase for Scrobicularia plana in Oued Souss estuary (OS) were of 4.41 μmol/mn/mg and 14.43 nmol/mn/mg of protein, respectively. The studied species are considered good indicators in aquatic ecosystems.

Societal and environmental concern due to frequent reports of microplastics in fish stomachs raised as they may accumulate along the trophic chain. The request for analysing microplastics in fish stresses two major analytical issues: sample treatment and final characterization. The, so far, workhorse for chemical characterization is infrared spectroscopy which is time-consuming. Here, a quantum cascade laser-based device is used to accelerate the characterization stage. Its novelty poses new challenges for sample processing and particle handling because the unknown particles must be transferred to a reflective slide. In this study, three sample digestion protocols (alkaline-oxidative with H₂O₂, and alkaline-oxidative with NaClO and enzymatic-oxidative) and three different procedures to transfer the filter cake to reflective slides are compared. A simplified enzymatic-oxidative digestion (validated through an interlaboratory exercise) combined with a Syncore® automatic evaporation system and a Laser Direct Infrared Imaging (LDIR) device is proposed first time as a reliable and relatively fast method to treat gastrointestinal tracts of fish. Analytical recoveries were studied using samples of Scomber scombrus and they were ca. 100% for big –i.e., >500 μm- and ca. 90% for medium –i.e., 200–300 μm- particles and ca. 75% for 10 μm thick fibres.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Increasing environmental problems demand mitigation solutions to fulfill sustainability development goals. Microalgae offer possibility of valorizing the CO₂ and wastewater-derived nutrients to produce numerous industrial bioproducts. However, developing self-sustained systems for the complete valorization of algal biomass into valuable biobased products is challenging. Currently, sustainable algal processing faces several challenges including costly cultivation, difficult harvesting, and incomplete biomass valorization. This review assessed the prospects of emerging technologies focusing on the integrated approaches for sustainable algal biorefinery development ensuring the sustainability of environment-water-energy nexus. RECENT FINDINGS: Evaluation of various upstream, midstream, and downstream processing technologies provided insights into the processing issues. In upstream processing, high-rate algal ponds and integrated carbon capture and transformation technologies offer waste valorization into eco-friendly algal production. A brief comparison of harvesting technologies mainly focusing on chemical and biological flocculation has shown that integrating physical and biological harvesting methods are more reliable and efficient. Overview of downstream processing has indicated that biomass processing in a cascading manner offers the complete biomass valorization in a zero-waste paradigm. Assessment of cultivation-to-production technologies highlighted that “zero-waste” algal biorefinery has the potential to become reality by integrating the industry 4.0 and phenomics approaches with eco-friendly cultivation, harvesting, and processing technologies. Hybrid methods based on integrated cascading processing offer complete biomass valorization in a circular bioeconomy paradigm.

Fragmentation of plastic macro-debris into secondary microplastics [MPs] is primarily the result of their extensive oxidation under exposure to solar UV radiation. The heterogeneity in the marine zones with respect to their oxidative potential for plastics, introduces a marked zonal bias in their ability to carry out weathering and fragmentation. Comparing the oxidative environments of the beach zone and the upper pelagic zone with floating plastics, it is argued that the latter tends to preclude photooxidative fragmentation. Abundant MPs found in seawater are therefore more likely to have originated on beaches or land and subsequently transferred to the water, as opposed to being generated by weathering of floating plastic stock. Laboratory-accelerated weathering of plastics in seawater obtains efficient micro-fragmentation and in some instances photo- dissolution of the plastic debris, but these results cannot be reliably extrapolated to natural weathering conditions in the ocean environment.

We assess the role of direct and indirect effects of coastal environmental drivers (including the parameters of the carbonate system) on energy expenditure (MR) and body mass (M) of the intertidal mussel, Perumytilus purpuratus, across 10 populations distributed over 2800 km along the Southern Eastern Pacific (SEP) coast. We find biogeographic and local variation in carbonate system variables mediates the effects of latitude and temperature on metabolic rate allometry along the SEP coast. Also, the fitted Piecewise Structural Equation models (PSEM) have greater predictive ability (conditional R² = 0.95) relative to the allometric scaling model (R² = 0.35). The largest standardized coefficients for MR and M were determined by the influence of temperature and latitude, followed by pCO₂, pH, total alkalinity, and salinity. Thus, physiological diversity of P. purpuratus along the SEP coast emerges as the result of direct and indirect effects of biogeographic and local environmental variables.

In the present study Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed as electronic databases were used to find work published up to October 27, 2020 about microplastics evaluation in conventional wastewater treatment plants. In total, 407 publications were found, of which 77 were eligible for meta-analysis. A comprehensive meta-analysis was undertaken to evaluate the relevant publications regarding microplastics abundance. The average microplastics abundance was within the 1–31,400, 0.2–12,580, 0.002–7863, and 0.003–447 items range per liter wastewater for influent, primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment steps, respectively. The difference between the abundance of microplastics characterization for the different treatment steps was analyzed using ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test (depending on the data distribution). According to the pooled data, the average microplastics abundance was 124.04, 20.67, 5.62, and 1.97 (items/l) for influent, primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment. The results of Egger's test (t = 7.49, P ≤ 0.0001) were statistically significant, suggesting the existence of publication bias.

This review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the risk assessment of plastic-associated residual additives, i.e. residual monomers, degradation products and additives, in the marine environment, also considering effects of weathering and bioavailability. Experimental studies have found a number of organic and metal additive compounds in leachates from plastics, and the analysis of weathered plastic particles, such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene particles sampled on beaches and shorelines, has identified residual additives, such as flame retardants, plasticizers, UV stabilizers and antioxidants. While the transfer of e.g. PBDEs to organisms upon ingestion has been demonstrated, studies on uptake and bioaccumulation of plastic-associated chemicals are inconclusive. Studies on hazard and risk assessments are few, and focus on monomers and/or a limited number of high concentration additives, such as phthalates and flame retardants. The risk assessment results vary between low, moderate and high risks of specific additives, and are not necessarily consistent for the same compound. Given the large number of chemicals potentially introduced into the marine environment with plastic particles and the challenges associated with the correct quantification of exposure concentrations and toxicity thresholds, the question arises whether new risk assessment concepts may be needed.

Hypoxia (low oxygen stress) is increasingly reported on coral reefs, caused by ocean deoxygenation linked to coastal nutrient pollution and ocean warming. While the ability to regulate respiration is a key driver of hypoxia tolerance in many other aquatic taxa, corals' oxyregulatory capabilities remain virtually unexplored. Here, we examine O₂-consumption patterns across 17 coral species under declining O₂ partial pressure (pO₂). All corals showed ability to oxyregulate, but total positive regulation (Tₚₒₛ) varied between species, ranging from 0.41 (Pocillopora damicornis) to 2.42 (P. acuta). On average, corals performed maximum regulation effort (Pcₘₐₓ) at low pO₂ (30% air saturation, corresponding to lower O₂ levels measured on natural reef systems), and exhibited detectable regulation down to as low as <10% air saturation. Our study shows that corals are not oxyconformers as previously thought, suggesting oxyregulation is likely important for survival in dynamic O₂ environments of shallow coral reefs subjected to hypoxic events.

The Marine Monitoring Program (MMP) was established in 2005 to monitor the inshore health of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and evaluate progress towards water quality objectives in Reef Water Quality Improvement Plans. The MMP provides information on the magnitude and spatial extent of pesticide contamination, reports on temporal variability, and provides a risk assessment for the biota in the GBR lagoon. However, long-term trends in pesticide contamination of inshore marine waters over the entire monitoring period (2005–2018) have not been assessed. We used up to 14 years of monitoring data for five PSII herbicides (ametryn, atrazine, diuron, tebuthiuron, and hexazinone) to conduct temporal trend analyses at 11 inshore monitoring sites. The trend analyses suggested increasing significant trends (p < 0.05) for the five PSII herbicides concentrations at several monitoring sites. Power analysis indicated that monitoring sites with over 10 years of monitoring data had convincing results with 80% power.
