During phytoremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals, the phytoremediation plants are often stressed by pollutants, which would reduce the efficiency of phytoremediation. The addition of organic acids from root exudates could alleviate the stress. In this study, three organic acids (citric acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid) were added to investigate the effects of organic acids on the stress response of Scirpus triqueter L. at two pyrene–lead concentrations. The activities of reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, plasma membrane H⁺-ATPase, and vacuolar H⁺-ATPase and PPase activity, as well as the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, and CAT) in Scirpus triqueter L. were determined. The addition of organic acids could effectively reduce the activities of reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, plasma membrane H⁺-ATPase, and vacuolar H⁺-ATPase and PPase activities. Under higher pollution, the damage of plant plasma membrane is more serious, but the addition of citric acid can alleviate this situation and even more effective than the relief under low pollution. The effect of citric acid was more significant than that of succinic acid and glutaric acid. These results demonstrated that organic acids could attenuate the stress of pyrene and lead to Scirpus triqueter L.

In this work, the novel direct synthesis method of dimethylacetamide-based graphene oxide (GO) was performed through electrochemical exfoliation assisted by commercially available single-tail sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) surfactant. Then, the synthesised GO (SDS–GO) was incorporated into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) solution to produce a nanofiltration (NF) membrane through the phase immersion method. The addition of GO into the preparation of membrane solution alters the membrane morphology and improves the hydrophilicity. TiO₂ was also used as an additive for the NF membrane fabrication to further increase the membrane hydrophilicity. The fabricated PVDF/SDS–GO/TiO₂ and PVDF/SDS–GO NF membranes were compared with pure PVDF membrane. Then, the fabricated NF membranes were tested for methylene blue (MB) rejection with 10 ppm MB concentration. On the basis of the dead-end cell measurement operated at the pressure of 2 bar, the PVDF/SDS–GO/TiO₂ presents high MB rejection (92.76%) and the highest dye flux (7.770 L/m² h). This dye flux value was sevenfold higher than that of pure PVDF membrane (1.146 L/m² h) which was due to the utilisation of both GO and TiO₂ that improved the membrane hydrophilicity as indicated by the lowest contact angle (64.0 ± 0.11°). High porosity (57.46%) also resulted in the highest water permeability (4.187 L/m² h bar) of the PVDF/SDS–GO/TiO₂ NF membrane.

Aquatic organisms might be exposed episodically or continuously to chemicals for long-term periods throughout their life span. Pesticides are one example of widely used chemicals and thus represent a potential hazard to aquatic organisms. In addition, these chemicals may be present simultaneously in the environment or as pulses, being difficult to predict accurately how their joint effects will take place. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate how Daphnia magna (clone k6) exposed throughout generations to a model pesticide (the fungicide carbendazim) would react upon an exposure to another chemical compound (triclosan) and to a mixture of both chemicals (carbendazim and triclosan). Responses of daphnids continuously exposed to carbendazim and kept in clean medium will be compared using immobilization tests and the comet assay (DNA integrity). The results showed that triclosan presented similar toxicity to daphnids exposed for 12 generations (F12) to carbendazim (similar 48-h-LC₅₀ values for immobilization data), when compared with daphnids kept in clean medium. However, at subcellular level, daphnids previously exposed to carbendazim for 12 generations (F12) showed different responses than those from clean medium, presenting a higher toxicity; a general higher percentage of DNA damage was observed, after exposure to a range of concentrations of triclosan and to the binary combination of triclosan + carbendazim. The patterns of toxicity observed for the binary mixture triclosan + carbendazim were generally similar for daphnids in clean medium and daphnids exposed to carbendazim, with a dose level deviation with antagonism observed at low doses of the chemical mixture for the immobilization data and a dose ratio deviation with synergism mainly caused by triclosan for DNA damage. With this study, we contributed to the knowledge on long-term induced effects of carbendazim exposure, while looking at the organismal sensitivity to another chemical (triclosan) and to a mixture of carbendazim and triclosan using lethality as an endpoint at the individual level and DNA damage as a subcellular endpoint.

Hydrothermal treatment (HTT) of sewage sludge (SS) with pig manure biochar (PMB) addition at 160–200 °C was conducted in this study. The effects of PMB addition on the dewaterability of SS and the speciation evolution, leaching toxicity, and potential ecological risk of heavy metals were investigated. The results showed that the solid contents of the filter cakes after adding PMB increased from 20.24%, 24.03%, and 28.69% to 21.57%, 27.69%, and 32.91% at 160, 180, and 200 °C, respectively, compared with traditional HTT of SS. Furthermore, PMB could reduce the bioavailable fractions of Cr, Ni, As, and Cd in the filter cakes obtained at 160 and 180 °C compared with the theoretical value. The leaching toxicity of heavy metals in the filter cakes after adding PMB decreased significantly at 160 and 180 °C and the potential ecological risk index (RI) declined from 62.13 and 44.83 to 55.93 and 42.11, respectively. The obtained filter cake had low potential ecological risk when used in the environment. The mechanisms on the improvement of the dewaterability and heavy metals immobilization were related that PMB acted as the skeleton builder providing the outflow path for free water and implanting heavy metals into SS structure. And the optimal results were obtained at 180 °C during HTT of SS with PMB addition. This work provides a novel and effective method for the treatment of SS.

2019
Ma, Yilan | Wang, Shanshan | Wang, Ke | Liu, Lei | Zhang, Ruiqin
As an important role in economic development in China, industrial parks have consumed plenty of energy, while emitting enormous air pollutants and discharging large quantities of waste heat. Energy cascade utilization is an effective way to improve the energy efficiency of industrial parks. The objective of this study was to assess the co-benefits of energy cascade utilization, including the energy savings potential, reduction potential of air pollutants, and air quality improvements, in an industrial park in China. Through an energy flow analysis of steam at different pressures and residual gas among various enterprises, this study identified the existing energy cascade utilization network in a baseline scenario and proposed an enhanced scenario. To evaluate the co-benefits of these two scenarios, the CALPUFF model was used to integrate energy savings and air pollutant mitigation for the park in 2017. The results show that energy cascade utilization can result in considerable co-benefits related to energy conservation, air pollutant emission reductions, and air quality improvements. In the enhanced scenario, the total energy savings potential is 11,425 TJ, with emission reductions of 859 tons of SO₂ and 910 tons of NOₓ. Based on the CALPUFF simulations of SO₂ and NOₓ diffusion in the four seasons, the concentrations of SO₂ and NOₓ in the study area considerably decreased in the enhanced scenario compared with those in the baseline scenario. This study demonstrates that the park should focus on the cascade utilization of waste heat and residual gas to improve the energy utilization efficiency and reduce atmospheric pollutant emissions.

The adsorption properties and mechanisms of methylene blue (MB) onto novel biochars produced by the fallen leaves of Magnolia grandiflora Linn (MGL), at different pyrolysis temperatures (450 °C, 500 °C, 550 °C) were explored. Results of the adsorption experiments revealed that the fallen leaf-biochar of MGL (MGLB) pyrolyzed at 450 °C (MGLB450) had the highest adsorption capacity of MB (114.15 mg g⁻¹) and MGLB pyrolyzed at 500 °C (MGLB500) was lowest (88.13 mg g⁻¹). The characterization results showed that the BET surface area (41.784 m² g⁻¹) and total pore volume (0.043 cm³ g⁻¹) of MGLB450 were low, but the contents of oxygen-containing functional groups were highest. Oxygen-containing functional group might have a greater impact on the adsorption of MB than its physical characteristics. The adsorption capacity increased with reaction temperature, indicating that the MG adsorption onto biochars was endothermic. The higher initial concentrations of MB and pH were beneficial to adsorption. The adsorption kinetics showed that the adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The obtained equilibrium data were fitted better by Langmuir model rather than Freundlich model.

2019
Kun, He | Xiaoping, Li
To explore the possibility of using flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGDG) for inhibiting phosphorus (P) loss due to agricultural runoff, a 3-year study was performed in the farmlands of Chongming Dongtan between 2012 and 2015. Five different quantities of FGDG were used to treat the soil, and the effects of different treatments on the characteristics of soil P and crop growth were investigated. The results showed that 2 years after application of FGDG, the soil density at a depth of 0–10 cm decreased by 4.35–7.97%, the porosity increased by 1.77–11.0%, and the topsoil permeability increased by 0.87–3.81 times. Although the use of FGDG did not change the total P concentration in the soil, it decreased the concentration of sodium bicarbonate extractable P in the soil. Compared to the control, the average extractable P concentration at depths of 0–10 cm, 10–20 cm, and 20–30 cm decreased by 22.0–46.1%, 26.9–40.5%, and 22.8–34.8%, respectively. The inorganic P in the soil increased as the amount of FGDG increased, and the increase was mainly as Ca–P in the forms Ca₂–P and Ca₁₀–P. The decrease in bicarbonate extractable P and increase in inorganic P in the soil did not affect the growth of the crops, and the biomass and output of the crops increased compared to the control. Therefore, FGDG can enhance soil P immobilization, thus reducing soluble P runoff from farm fields, and improving water quality in receiving lakes and rivers while maintaining P nutrition to the crops.

The indirect carbon emission embodied in the intermediate input is also an important indicator of assessing a producer’s carbon emissions. Structural analysis of indirect carbon emissions is helpful to understand the responsibilities between producers and pay efforts to key areas. The aim of this study is to analyze indirect carbon emissions embodied in intermediate input between sectors and explore the distribution structure of indirect carbon emissions flow network (namely, ICEFN). Based on the modified input-output model and complex network theory, this study constructed four directed and weighted ICEFNs with 28 sectors from 1997 to 2012. The results show that indirect carbon emissions between sectors are significantly higher than direct carbon emissions, accounting for nearly 70% of the total carbon emissions of China. Second, we analyzed the embodied carbon emission intensity (namely, ECI) of each sector. Although the ECI has been decreasing over time, the decrease has increasingly diminished, which indicates that the additional carbon emission reductions are more difficult. Third, we identified the key sectors which play different roles in the ICEFNs. Meanwhile, we studied the key paths which show more closed relationships between some sectors in ICEFNs. Finally, based on the above analysis, we made policy recommendations.

Previous studies have demonstrated the side effects of tooth whiteners on the gastric mucosa. However, the impact of dental bleaching products on the liver, kidney, and heart remains obscure. The present study investigated the toxic potential of 35% carbamide peroxide (CPO) containing tooth whitening product (TWP) on the liver, kidney, heart, and stomach of mice, pointing to the role of oxidative stress and inflammation. Mice received 250 or 500 mg/kg body weight CPO-TWP orally for 3 weeks and samples were collected for analyses. Both doses of CPO-TWP induced a significant increase in circulating liver, kidney, and heart function markers. CPO-TWP-administered mice showed several histological alterations and a significant increase in liver, kidney, heart, and stomach lipid peroxidation levels along with diminished glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. In addition, administration of CPO-TWP provoked anemia, leukocytosis, and a significant increase in circulating levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. In conclusion, exposure to 35% CPO-TWP induced functional, histological, and hematological alterations, oxidative stress, and inflammation in mice. Therefore, the frequent use of tooth bleaching agents should be monitored very carefully to avoid the application of excess amounts as well as the intake.

The aims of this study were to analyze biochemical and morphological responses (glutathione S-transferase activity and branchial lesions) in Ucides cordatus (crabs) and to verify how the species is responding to environmental contamination in a port (potentially contaminated area) and mangrove (reference area; Amazon Coast, Maranhão, Brazil). Adult males were captured bimonthly for a period of 1 year. Higher GST activity (1.03 ± 0.07 μmol min⁻¹ mg protein⁻¹) was observed in crabs in the port when compared with those in the reference area (p < 0.05). The greatest number of branchial lesions (serious alterations) was recorded in crabs only in the port area. The GST activity increased until serious lesions appeared; after this limit, GST activity decreased dramatically to very low levels, thus resulting in irreversible lesions (lamella collapse). The mathematical model based on the two parameters evaluated in U. cordatus showed that the port area experienced substantial contamination impact, while the mangroves (reference area) presented moderate environmental quality.
