With the implementation of COVID-19 restrictions and consequent improvement in air quality due to the nationwide lockdown, ozone (O₃) pollution was generally amplified in China. However, the O₃ levels throughout the Guangxi region of South China showed a clear downward trend during the lockdown. To better understand this unusual phenomenon, we investigated the characteristics of conventional pollutants, the influence of meteorological and anthropogenic factors quantified by a multiple linear regression (MLR) model, and the impact of local sources and long-range transport based on a continuous emission monitoring system (CEMS) and the HYSPLIT model. Results show that in Guangxi, the conventional pollutants generally declined during the COVID-19 lockdown period (January 24 to February 9, 2020) compared with their concentrations during 2016–2019, while O₃ gradually increased during the resumption (10 February to April 2020) and full operation periods (May and June 2020). Focusing on Beihai, a typical Guangxi region city, the correlations between the daily O₃ concentrations and six meteorological parameters (wind speed, visibility, temperature, humidity, precipitation, and atmospheric pressure) and their corresponding regression coefficients indicate that meteorological conditions were generally conducive to O₃ pollution mitigation during the lockdown. A 7.84 μg/m³ drop in O₃ concentration was driven by meteorology, with other decreases (4.11 μg/m³) explained by reduced anthropogenic emissions of O₃ precursors. Taken together, the lower NO₂/SO₂ ratios (1.25–2.33) and consistencies between real-time monitored primary emissions and ambient concentrations suggest that, with the closure of small-scale industries, residual industrial emissions have become dominant contributors to local primary pollutants. Backward trajectory cluster analyses show that the slump of O₃ concentrations in Southern Guangxi could be partly attributed to clean air mass transfer (24–58%) from the South China Sea. Overall, the synergistic effects of the COVID-19 lockdown and meteorological factors intensified O₃ reduction in the Guangxi region of South China.

This study investigates the morphology and nanostructure of soot particles during cold-start and hot-start engine operation of a diesel engine using oxygenated fuels. The soot samples were analysed using transmission electron microscopy. The oxygen content in the fuel was varied between 0 and 12%. The results showed that the primary particles during cold-start have significantly smaller size when compared to hot-start engine operation. The addition of oxygenated fuels also resulted in smaller sized primary particles. Smaller radius of gyration and higher fractal dimension of soot aggregates during cold-start would mean smaller aggregate size with a more compact structure. Shorter fringes with a higher inter-fringe spacing for cold-start would mean lower graphitisation of soot particles that could be related to higher oxidation reactivity of soot particles.

Plastic waste are introduced into the environment inevitably and their exposure in the environment causes deterioration in mechanical and physicochemical properties and leads to the formation of plastic fragments, which are considered as microplastics when their size is < 5 mm. In recent years, microplastic pollution has been reported in all kinds of environments worldwide and is considered a potential threat to the health of ecosystems and humans. However, knowledge on the environmental degradation of plastics and the formation of microplastics is still limited. In this review, potential hotspots for the accumulation of plastic waste were identified, major mechanisms and characterization methods of plastic degradation were summarized, and studies on the environmental degradation of plastics were evaluated. Future research works should further identify the key environmental parameters and properties of plastics affecting the degradation in order to predict the fate of plastics in different environments and facilitate the development of technologies for reducing plastic pollution. Formation and degradation of microplastics, including nanoplastics, should receive more research attention to assess their fate and ecological risks in the environment more comprehensively.

Threatened or endangered reptiles, such as sea turtles, are generally understudied within the field of wildlife toxicology, with even fewer studies on how contaminants affect threatened species reproduction. This paper aimed to better inform threatened species conservation by systematically and quantitatively reviewing available research on the reproductive toxicology of all reptiles, threatened and non-threatened. This review found 178 studies that matched our search criteria. These papers were categorized into location conducted, taxa studied, species studied, effects found, and chemicals investigated. The most studied taxa were turtles (n = 87 studies, 49%), alligators/crocodiles (n = 54, 30%), and lizards (n = 37, 21%). Maternal transfer, sex steroid alterations, sex reversal, altered sexual development, developmental abnormalities, and egg contamination were the most common effects found across all reptile taxa, providing guidance for avenues of research into threatened species. Maternal transfer of contaminants was found across all taxa, and taking into account the foraging behavior of sea turtles, could help elucidate differences in maternal transfer seen at nesting beaches. Sex steroid alterations were a common effect found with contaminant exposure, indicating the potential to use sex steroids as biomarkers along with traditional biomarkers such as vitellogenin. Sex reversal through chemical exposure was commonly found among species that exhibit temperature dependent sex determination, indicating the potential for both environmental pollution and climate change to disrupt population dynamics of many reptile species, including sea turtles. Few studies used in vitro, DNA, or molecular methodologies, indicating the need for more research using high-throughput, non-invasive, and cost-effective tools for threatened species research. The prevalence of developmental abnormalities and altered sexual development and function indicates the need to further study how anthropogenic pollutants affect reproductive output in threatened reptiles.

Arsenite [As(III)] toxicity causes impeded growth, inadequate productivity of plants and toxicity through the food chain. Using various chemical residues for priming is one of the approaches in conferring arsenic tolerance in crops. We investigated the mechanism of abscisic acid (ABA)-induced As(III) tolerance in rice genotypes (cv. Swarna and Swarna Sub1) pretreated with 10 μM of ABA for 24 h and transferred into 0, 25 and 50 μM arsenic for 10 days. Plants showed a dose-dependent bioaccumulation of As(III), oxidative stress indicators like superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and the activity of lipoxygenase. As(III) had disrupted cellular redox that reflecting growth indices like net assimilation rate, relative growth rate, specific leaf weight, leaf mass ratio, relative water content, proline, delta-1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase and electrolyte leakage. ABA priming was more protective in cv. Swarna Sub1 than Swarna for retrieval of total glutathione pool, non-protein thiols, cysteine, phytochelatin and glutathione reductase. Phosphate metabolisms were significantly curtailed irrespective of genotypes where ABA had moderated phosphate uptake and its metabolizing enzymes like acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and H⁺/ATPase. Rice seedlings had regulated antioxidative potential with the varied polymorphic expression of those enzymes markedly with antioxidative enzymes. The results have given the possible cellular and physiological traits those may interact with ABA priming in the establishment of plant tolerance with As(III) over accumulation and, thereby, its amelioration for oxidative damages. Finally, cv. Swarna Sub1 was identified as a rice genotype as a candidate for breeding program for sustainability against As(III) stress with cellular and physiological traits serving better for selection pressure.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in water are receiving particular attention as they pose adverse effects on aquatic systems, even at trace concentrations. A comprehensive study was conducted on 14 EDCs (five estrogens and nine household and personal care products (HPCPs)) in the water of the urbanized Jiaozhou Bay in the Yellow Sea during summer and winter. Results showed that the total concentration of 14 EDCs ranged from 100 to 658 ng L⁻¹ and 56.7–212 ng L⁻¹ in the estuarine and bay water, respectively. The average total concentration of five estrogens in summer was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than that in winter due to the higher precipitation dilution and degradations during summer, whereas the average total concentration of nine HPCPs was significantly (p < 0.05) higher during the summer than that during the winter because of the higher usage and emissions during the summer. Estrogens and HPCPs were dominated by 17α-ethinylestradiol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA), respectively. High PHBA concentrations may be related to the hydrolysis of parabens. The total concentrations of EDCs were higher in the eastern coastal seawater of the bay due to the strong influence of domestic and industrial wastewater discharge. Estrogens may interfere with the endocrine system of aquatic organisms in the bay because the total estradiol equivalent concentration exceeded 1 ng L⁻¹. 17α-ethinylestradiol was the main contributor to the estrogenic activity. The EDC mixtures posed high risks (RQ > 1) to mollusks, crustaceans, and fish, and low to moderate risks (RQ < 1) to algae. Fish was the most sensitive aquatic taxon to the EDC mixtures. Given the concentration and frequency of EDCs, the optimized risk quotient method revealed that 17α-ethinylestradiol, estrone, triclocarban, triclosan, and 17β-estradiol should be prioritized in ecological management because of their high risks (prioritization index of >1).

High particulate matter (PM) and ozone (O₃) concentration in Hong Kong are frequently observed during the summertime typhoon season. Despite the critical effect of a typhoon on air pollution, contributions of vertical wind profile and cloud movement during transboundary air pollution (TAP) on surface PM and O₃ concentration have yet to be fully understood. This work is the first study to apply a network of Doppler light detection and ranging (LiDAR) as well as back trajectory analysis to comprehensively analyze the effect of a weak Typhoon (Danas) occurring during 16–19 July 2019 on different variations in PM and O₃ concentration. During the typhoon Danas, three types of surface air pollution with five episodes were identified: (1) low PM and high O₃ concentration; (2) co-occurring high PM and O₃ concentration and (3) high PM and low O₃ concentration. Employing our 3D Real-Time Atmospheric Monitoring System (3DREAMs) along with surface observations, we found the important role of TAP in the increases in surface PM and O₃ concentration with significant vertical wind shear that transported air pollutants at upper levels, and strong vertical mixing that brought air pollutants to the ground level. Cloud movement related to typhoon periphery, as well as high solar radiation due to sinking motion and remote transport by continental wind, have an impact on local O₃ concentration. For the substantial difference in O₃ concentration between two air quality measurement sites, the similar vertical aerosol distributions and wind profiles suggest the comparable TAP contributions at the two sites and thus infer the critical role of local O₃ photochemical process in the O₃ difference. This work comprehensively reveals the influences of a weak typhoon on variations in PM and O₃ during the five episodes, providing important references for air quality monitoring and forecast in regions under the influence of typhoon.

Red mud was a highly alkaline hazardous waste, and their resource utilization was a research hotspot. In this study, influencing mechanisms of red mud based passivator on the transformation of Cd fraction in acidic Cd-polluted soil, photosynthetic property, and Cd accumulation in edible amaranth were investigated based on the evaluation of Cd adsorption capacity, root metabolic response, and soil aggregate distribution. Results showed that red mud exhibited good Cd adsorption capacities at about 35 °C and pH 9 in an aqueous solution, and the adsorption behavior of red mud on Cd in rhizosphere soil solution was considered to have some similarity. In the soil-pot trial, red mud application significantly facilitated edible amaranth growth by enhancing the maximum photochemical efficiency and light energy absorption by per unit leaf area by activating more reaction centers. The main mechanisms of rhizosphere soil Cd immobilisation by red mud application included: i) the reduction of mobilized Cd caused by the increasing negative surface charge of soil and precipitation of Cd hydroxides and carbonates at high pH; ii) the increase of organics-Cd complexes caused by the increasing –OH and –COOH amounts adsorbed on the surface of rhizosphere soil after red mud application; and iii) the decrease of available Cd content in soil aggregates caused by the increasing organic matters after red mud application. This study would provide the basis for the safe utilization of red mud remediating acidic Cd-polluted soil.

Arsenic (As) is a ubiquitous metalloid that is highly toxic to all living organisms. When grown in As-contaminated soils, plants may accumulate significant amounts of As in the grains or edible shoot parts which then enter a food chain. Plant growth and development per se are also both affected by arsenic. These effects are traditionally attributed to As-induced accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a consequent lipid peroxidation and damage to cellular membranes. However, this view is oversimplified, as As exposure have a major impact on many metabolic processes in plants, including availability of essential nutrients, photosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism, protein metabolism, and sulfur metabolism. This review is aimed to fill this gap in the knowledge. In addition, the molecular basis of arsenic uptake and transport in plants and prospects of creating low As-accumulating crop species, for both agricultural productivity and food safety, are discussed.

Hydrocarbons and their derivative compounds are recalcitrant in nature and causing adverse impacts to the environment and are classified as important pollutants. Removal of these pollutants from the atmosphere is a challenging process. Hydrophobic organic pollutants (HOPs) including crude oil, diesel, dotriacontane (C₃₂), and tetracontane (C₄₀) are subjected to the biodegradation study by using a bacterial consortium consist of Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas stutzeri, and Acinetobacter baumannii. The impact of pH and temperature on the biodegradation process was monitored. During the HOPs biodegradation, the impact of hydrocarbon-degrading extracellular enzymes such as alcohol dehydrogenase, alkane hydroxylase, and lipase was examined, and found average activity about 47.2, 44.3, and 51.8 μmol/mg⁻¹, respectively. Additionally, other enzymes such as catechol 1,2 dioxygenase and catechol 2,3 dioxygenase were found as 118 and 112 μmol/mg⁻¹ Enzyme as an average range in all the HOPs degradation, respectively. Also, the impact of the extracellular polymeric substance and proteins were elucidated during the biodegradation of HOPs with the average range of 116.90, 54.98 mg/L⁻¹ respectively. The impact of biosurfactants on the degradation of different types of HOPs is elucidated. Very slight changes in the pH were also noticed during the biodegradation study. Biodegradation efficiency was calculated as 90, 84, 76, and 72% for crude oil, diesel, C₃₂, and C₄₀, respectively. Changes in the major functional groups (CH, C–O–C, CO, =CH₂, CH₂, CH₃) were confirmed by FTIR analysis and intermediated metabolites were identified by GCMS analysis. The surface-active molecules along with the enzymes played a crucial role in the biodegradation process.
