The French Mussel Watch: More than two decades of chemical contamination survey in Mediterranean coastal waters 全文

Active biomonitoring of chemical contamination (e.g., Cd, Hg, Pb, DDT, PCB, PAH) in French Mediterranean coastal waters has been performed for more than two decades. This study aimed at presenting the current contamination in 2021 and the temporal evolution of concentrations from 2000. Based on a relative spatial comparison, low concentrations were measured in 2021 at most sites (>83 %). Also, several stations with moderate to high levels were highlighted in the vicinity of major urban industrial centers (e.g., Marseille, Toulon) and near river mouths (e.g., Rhône, Var). Over the last 20 years, no major trend was revealed, mostly, especially for the relative high-level sites. This likely constant contamination over time, plus slight increases of metallic elements at a few sites, still raise questions on the efforts that remain to be made. The decreasing trends of organic compounds, in particular PAH, provide evidence of the efficiency of some management actions.

This paper analyzes the variability of microplastics vertical distributions in the oceanic water column. Data were obtained from targeted sampling in the Bay of Marseille (France) and from a numerical simulation forced by realistic physical forcings. By fitting model and in-situ data in a simplified vertical dimension, three microplastics classes may be deduced: settling, buoyant and winter neutrally-buoyant microplastics. Buoyant microplastics are mainly concentrated at the surface but they can be mixed throughout the whole water column during episodes with strong winds and no water stratification, inducing an implicit underestimation of buoyant microplastics in surface sampling. Almost symmetrical to the distribution of buoyant microplastics, settling microplastics are mainly found at the bottom but they can sometimes reach the surface under the mixing conditions cited above. They could thus contribute to surface sampling. Winter neutrally-buoyant microplastics are more homogenously mixed during the winter but are under the stratified layers during summer.

Recent studies have demonstrated that plankton can be a key pathway for the uptake and transfer of contaminants entering the marine environment up to top predators. The plankton-contaminant MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE cruise was devoted to quantifying contaminants in water and the whole plankton size range (10 size fractions) at 10 stations along a north-south transect in the western Mediterranean Sea from the French to the Tunisian coasts through the Provençal and Algerian basins. Pumping and filtering devices and net sampling have been used for collecting very high amounts of small particles and planktonic organisms in the chlorophyll maximum layer (CML). The present paper characterizes the zooplankton components for which the contaminant measurements were carried out. At each station, a horizontal towed Hydro-Bios net with a 60 μm mesh-size net was used to discriminate 5 size-fractions from 60 μm to a few mm. For each size-fraction, one part of the sample was used for dry weight measurements and the other one for estimating the contribution to biomass of detritus, phytoplankton, and among zooplankton of the major taxonomic groups based on the imagery tools ZOOSCAN and FLOWCAM. In each zooplankton size fraction, metabolic rates were calculated from the size spectrum to estimate trophic and excretion fluxes flowing through this fraction. These observations were compared to a similar analysis of tows in the upper layer (vertical) and the surface layer (horizontal). The total sampled biomass concentration at the CML was higher than in the water column (COL) and much higher than at the surface (SURF) in most of the stations, but in the CML and COL a substantial contribution was due to detritus mostly concentrated in the smallest size-fractions (60–200 μm and 200–500 μm). Absolute values of zooplankton biomass show neither a clear spatial pattern nor a significant difference between strata. The CML layer was dominated by copepods similarly to COL and SURF, but presented a higher contribution of nauplii and a near absence of appendicularians. At some stations, crustaceans and gelatinous plankton could be important contributors to CML. The zooplankton biomass composition of the two smallest fractions (<500 μm) was dominated by nauplii, small copepods and, occasionally, by small miscellaneous organisms (mostly pteropodes). In contrast, clear differences between stations appeared for the largest fractions (>500 μm) due to large crustaceans, gelatinous organisms, and chaetognaths. These changes in biomass composition according to size fractions suggest a progressive trophic shift from dominant herbivory in the smallest fractions to more contrasted trophic structure (including carnivory) in the largest fractions. The daily carbon demand and the N and P excretion of zooplankton were on average higher at the CML but with no significant difference with COL. The zooplankton grazing represented 2.7 to 22.7 % of the phytoplankton stock per day, whereas its excretion represented a daily N and P recycling compared to dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus stocks ranging respectively from 0.2 to 19 % and from 0 to 21 %. This information should help in the interpretation of the content of various contaminants in zooplankton fractions.

International audience | The use of biochars (BCs) and activated carbons as a way of sequestering soil-bound pollutants such as chlordecone (CLD) is increasingly being studied. This study aims at assessing the impact of Sargassum BC/AC particle size and Sargassum BC amendment rate on CLD adsorption in Nitisol and in Andosol. Four different types of carbonaceous matrices were tested: Sargasso carbon activated by phosphoric acid (SargH3PO4), Sargasso carbon activated by steam (SargH2O), biochar of Sargasso (Ch Sarg700), and a commercial activated carbon (ORBO™). In a first experiment, CLD contaminated Andosol and Nitisol were amended with 2% of each carbonaceous matrix divided into four particles size classes (< 50 µm, 50–150 µm, 150–200 µm, and > 200 µm). In a second experiment, the contaminated soils were amended with the biochar of Sargasso at five application rates (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2% (w/w)). After a 4-month aging, environmental availability tests were carried out on the soils of both experiments. The results of the first experiment showed that the best reductions of CLD environmental availability were obtained in both soils with the biochar of Sargasso and the ORBO™. More specifically, in nitisol, particle size under 50 µm of biochar of Sargasso and AC ORBO™ showed a CLD environmental availability reduction up to 72 ± 2.6% and 79 ± 2.6%. In Andosol, there was no significant difference between the three particle sizes (< 50 µm, 50–150 µm, and 150–200 µm) of the biochar of Sargasso on the reduction of environmental availability (average reduction of 43 ± 2.5%). The results of the second experiment showed that an amendment rate increase improves the immobilization of CLD. When the amendment rate was increased from 0.25 to 2%, the environmental availability was reduced by 43% in Nitisol and 50% in Andosol.

The aim of this study was to characterize and quantify microplastics (MPs) at the chlorophyll maximum layer (CML), around 30 to 60 m depth, during a cruise dedicated to the study of contaminants in plankton, the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE project, along a north-south transect in the western Mediterranean Sea (Tedetti et al., 2023). Plankton were collected by horizontal net tows in this layer using a multinet Hydrobios Midi equipped with 60 μm mesh-size nets. The collected plankton were fractionated through a sieve column for various later contaminant measurements and for zooplankton analysis (Fierro-González et al., 2023). For all stations, samples were also fully examined for microplastics (MPs) for fractions >300 μm. MPs were found at all stations in the CML layer (mean: 42.9 ± 45.4 MPs m−3), of which 96 ± 4 % were fibers. The ratios of mesozooplankton/MPs and detritus/MPs in this CML were respectively 223 ± 315 and 2544 ± 2268. These data are analyzed together with MPs concentrations from sea- surface sampled with a 300 μm net-size Manta net at the same stations. Overall, our observations highlight the very high density of fibers at the CML, mainly associated with aggregates, raising the hypothesis of their interactions with marine snow. Therefore, the importance of marine snow and vertical layering will have to be considered in future MP distribution modelling efforts.

Total and dissolved concentrations of inorganic mercury (IHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in water (Adour Estuary) were determined during three sampling campaigns and related to biogeochemical variables (nutrients, organic matter). Factors (sampling time, sample type) were included in analysis of covariance with effect separation. The urban estuary suffered historically from anthropogenic sources, however, decreased emissions have reduced Hg concentrations. Total IHg (0.51–3.42 ng L−1) and MeHg (25–81 pg L−1) concentrations are additively described by suspended particulate matter and particulate organic carbon. Higher total concentrations, carried by organic-rich particles, were found near specific discharge points (0.79–8.02 ng L−1 and 34–235 pg L−1 for IHg and MeHg, respectively). The associated high dissolved MeHg concentrations could not be explained only by biogeochemical variables. Better efficiency of the models is found for total than for dissolved concentrations. Models should be checked with other contaminants or with estuaries, suffering from downstream contamination.

Particle-size classes (7 fractions from 0.8 to 2000 μm) were collected in the deep chlorophyll maximum along a Mediterranean transect including the northern coastal zone (bays of Toulon and Marseilles, France), the offshore zone (near the North Balearic Thermal Front), and the southern coastal zone (Gulf of Gabès, Tunisia). Concentrations of biotic metals and metalloids (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Sb, V, Zn) bound to living or dead organisms and faecal pellets were assessed by phosphorus normalisation. Biotic metals and metalloids concentrations (except Cr, Mn, and V) were higher in the offshore zone than in the coastal zones. In addition, biotic Sb and V concentrations appeared to be affected by atmospheric deposition, and biotic Cr concentrations appeared to be affected by local anthropogenic inputs. Essential elements (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, V, Zn) were very likely controlled both by the metabolic activity of certain organisms (nanoeukaryotes, copepods) and trophic structure. In the northern coastal zone, biomagnification of essential elements was controlled by copepods activities. In the offshore zone, metals and metalloids were not biomagnified probably due to homeostasis regulatory processes in organisms. In the southern coastal zone, biomagnification of As, Cu, Cr, Sb could probably induce specific effects within the planktonic network.

Plankton represents the main source of carbon in marine ecosystems and is consequently an important gateway for contaminants into the marine food webs. During the MERITE– HIPPOCAMPE campaign in the Mediterranean Sea (April–May 2019), plankton was sampled from pumping and net tows at 10 from the French coast to the Gulf of Gabès (Tunisia) to obtain different size fractions in contrasted regions. This study combines various approaches, including biochemical analyses, analyses of stable isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N), cytometry analyses and mixing models (MixSiar) on size-fractions of phyto- and zooplankton from 0.7 to >2000 μm. Pico- and nanoplankton represented a large energetic resource at the base of pelagic food webs. Proteins, lipids, and stable isotope ratios increased with size in zooplankton and were higher than in phytoplankton. Stable isotope ratios suggest different sources of carbon and nutrients at the base of the planktonic food webs depending on the coast and the offshore area. In addition, a link between productivity and trophic pathways was shown, with high trophic levels and low zooplankton biomass recorded in the offshore area. The results of our study highlight spatial variations of the trophic structure within the plankton size-fractions and will contribute to assess the role of the plankton as a biological pump of contaminants.

Black pearl farming is the second source of French Polynesia income after tourism, and Gambier Islands are the main farming sites. Gambier main lagoon contains several sub-lagoons critical for pearl oyster rearing and spat collecting (SC). The Rikitea lagoon, traditionally had good SC rates in the warm season which ensured steady supplies of oysters for black pearl production. However, since 2018, SC has abruptly decreased. To assess the factors affecting SC, Gambier lagoon hydrodynamics was investigated in 2019–2020 to calibrate a hydrodynamic model and simulate larval dispersal around the SC areas. The model shows the strong wind influence on larval dispersal and accumulation patterns and suggests that windy months in the warm season as it can occur during La Niña episodes can explain recent poor SC. Larval dispersal scenarios also informed on best locations to perform adult oyster restocking, a practice that can also enhance SC on the long term.

Studies analysing the accumulation and transfer of contaminants in planktonic food webs tend to rely on samples collected in discrete water bodies. Here, we assessed the representativeness of measurements at the chlorophyll-a maximum layer during the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE cruise for the entire water column by investigating the vertical distribution of particles and plankton obtained by in-situ optical profilers at nine stations across the Mediterranean Sea. We identified specific conditions where the interpretation of results from contaminant analyses can be improved by detailing plankton size structure and vertical distributions. First, the presence of higher than usual plankton concentrations can result in sampling issues that will affect biomass estimation within each size class and therefore bias our understanding of the contaminant dynamics. Secondly, the presence of an unsampled water layer with high zooplankton biomass might imply non-resolved contaminant pathways along the trophic structure. This study lays the basis for optimizing sampling strategy in contaminant studies.
