The selection of shade trees with appropriate spacing is important for minimising their impact on nutrient accumulation by understorey cash crops in agroforestry systems. Cocoa trees may be intercropped with overstorey legume or non-legume shade trees. A legume tree and/or a non-legume timber tree with edible kernels (Gliricidia sepium and Canarium indicum, respectively) are used as shade trees in cocoa plantations particularly in Papua New Guinea. This study explored the nutrient concentrations of cocoa beans in response to both tree-shade species and shade-tree spacing regime. The study also investigated the extent to which C. indicum tree spacing altered the nutrient concentrations of canarium kernels. G. sepium trees in the study had a final spacing of 12 m × 12 m while the spacing regimes of either 8 m × 8 m or 8 m × 16 m used for C. indicum. The calcium (Ca) concentrations of cocoa beans did not differ significantly between plants located next to G. sepium and plants located next to C. indicum. Cocoa beans next to C. indicum trees with spacing of 8 m × 16 m had higher potassium (K) concentrations than those next to G. sepium trees. However, phosphorus (P) concentrations of cocoa beans next to C. indicum trees with spacing of 8 m × 8 m or next to G. sepium trees were significantly higher than those next to C. indicum trees with spacing of 8 m × 16 m. The K concentrations in cocoa beans and soil were not correlated nor were the P concentrations in cocoa beans and soil. Correlations between nutrients in leaves and cocoa beans, or between leaves and canarium kernels, were not strong. Our results suggest that cocoa and canarium trees can be intercropped successfully, and that they do not compete for soil nutrients.

The magnetic properties of particulate matter (PM) deposited on the needles of Juniperus formosana along an urban street in Lanzhou city were measured to evaluate the variations of PM concentration in different seasons by varying distance from the road. The magnetism of PM deposited in this context was significantly higher in winter than in summer, which may reflect changes of atmospheric particle concentrations. Needle samples which were collected from the road-facing side exhibiting significantly stronger magnetism compared with those which were collected from the opposite side of the road, indicating the distance from pollution source to the needles as a factor controls the amount of PM. The results of this study show that the needles of Juniperus formosana are effective traps for PM and can therefore be used to monitor pollution fluxes in different seasons in an important urban context in NW China.

Biochar (BC) and activated carbon (AC) were both produced from corn straw. Biochar-supported zerovalent iron (BC-ZVI) and activated carbon-supported zerovalent iron (AC-ZVI) were synthesized and applied for Se(IV)/Se(VI) removal. The sorption capacity of BC-ZVI for Se(IV) and Se(VI) was reported at 62.52 and 35.39 mg g⁻¹, higher than that of AC-ZVI (56.02 and 33.24 mg g⁻¹), respectively, due to its higher iron content and more positive charges. The spectroscopic analyses showed that Se(IV)/Se(VI) were reduced to Se(0)/Se(-II) of less toxicity and solubility. The effects of various factors such as pH, ionic strength, co-existing cations and anions, and natural organic matter (NOM) were also investigated. Ionic strength showed no significant effect on Se(IV)/Se(VI) removal, but pH was critical. The presence of NO₃⁻ and SO₄²⁻ did not cause obvious inhibition to the removal, while PO₄³⁻ inhibited the sorption capacity of BC-ZVI and AC-ZVI for Se(IV)/Se(VI) significantly. Common cations (K⁺, Ca²⁺, and Mg²⁺) were found to slightly enhance the removal, while NOM significantly decreased the sorption capacity of BC-ZVI and AC-ZVI for Se(IV)/Se(VI). Besides, NOM showed stronger inhibition effect on AC-ZVI than that on BC-ZVI. These results indicated that BC-ZVI, compared with AC-ZVI, could be a promising sorbent to remove Se(IV)/Se(VI) due to its low cost and high efficiency.

The oil-water separation is a popular issue and the removal of oil from bulk water is also meaningful especially in oil spill incident, which not only wastes valuable energy resources but also threatens the ecological system and human health. Superhydrophobic and superoleophilic materials are very promising for the efficient oil removal from bulk water. Reported herein was a novel and easily operated superhydrophobic surface dip coating from a paint-like suspension containing two different sizes TiO₂ and perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane. Aluminum foil substrate, which is flexile and cost-efficient, was bonded with commercial water-proof double-sided adhesive tape (DSAT) to fix the paint to improve the mechanical strength. The coated aluminum foil exhibited rapid sorption/desorption rate (267 L/h m²), high oil sorption capacity (21 g/g), and excellent recyclability (≫ 15 recycling times). After 15 recycling times of sorption/desorption, the coated surface morphology still remained hierarchical micro- and nanostructures and the water contact angle still reached ~ 150°, indicating its superhydrophobic property. Meanwhile, the cost of oil removal of the coated material can match that of the commercial sorbent. We anticipate that the coated superhydrophobic aluminum foil will show outstanding performances on oil absorption and have good applications on a large scale.

The effect of soil amendments, i.e., compost, zeolite, and calcium oxide, on the chemical properties of soil contaminated with Cr(III) and Cr(VI) and the uptake of selected heavy metals by spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) was determined in a pot experiment. The content of all investigated heavy metals in the tested plants varied significantly in response to the tested soil amendments and increasing concentrations of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Compost, zeolite, and calcium oxide contributed to an increase in the average yield of the aerial parts of maize plants only in treatments contaminated with Cr(III). The concentrations of Cr, Zn, and Ni in the aerial parts of spring barley and maize were higher in treatments contaminated with Cr(III) than in treatments contaminated with Cr(VI). Calcium oxide induced a significant increase in soil pH relative to the control treatment. In treatments without soil amendments, the average Cr content of soil was higher in pots contaminated with Cr(VI). The concentrations of Zn and Cu in non-amended treatments were negatively correlated with increasing doses of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Calcium oxide decreased the average content of Cr, Cu, and Ni in all experimental variants. Compost increased the average content of Zn in treatments contaminated with Cr(III) and Cr(IV) relative to non-amended soil.

Phosphorus (P) is a significant limiting nutrient which is essential for all forms of lives. However, phosphate rock reserves are depleting rapidly due to population growth. At the same time, several countries have imposed legislative regulations on P-release into surface waters due to eutrophication. Nutrient recovery from wastewater can facilitate a sustainable, cost-effective and environment-friendly source of phosphorus. Although P-recovery as struvite from wastewater has been widely studied for a long time, there still exists a lot of challenges for widespread full-scale implementation. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the current state of the technologies for phosphorus recovery in the form of struvite. Fluidized bed reactors (FBRs) are widely used compared to continuously stirred reactors for P-recovery as struvite because of different solid and liquid retention time. Commercially available technologies were reported to accomplish about 80% P-removal efficiencies with a reasonable P-recovery for the most of the cases. The struvite production rate of various technologies varies from 0.89 to 13.7 kg/kg influent P. Nevertheless, these technologies are associated with several shortcomings such as high operational costs, high energy consumption, and large footprint. Increasing efforts focusing on the development of sustainable and commercially feasible technologies are expected in this sector as P-recovery is considered to be the future of wastewater engineering.

The massive generation of electronic waste (e-waste) and the informal recycling of e-waste are serious concerns in China. As a hazardous waste stream, e-waste calls for sustainable management practices to avoid adverse effects on environment and health. However, consumers’ awareness and active participation are needed to make e-waste management successful. Therefore, this study is an exploratory attempt to investigate young consumer awareness, knowledge, and participation in sustainable e-waste management practices. Meanwhile, the study reviews the current situation of e-waste recycling, its related legislative framework, and practices in China. The survey revealed that the respondents have keen environmental consciousness, while they have low awareness about e-waste-related rules and regulations, recycling programs, and the formal and informal recycling sector. The findings provide valuable insights for practitioners in order to promote environmental awareness and sustainable e-waste management practices among young consumers in China.

The accurate determination of widespread artificial sweeteners (ASs) and the information of their distributions in environments are of significance to investigate the environmental behaviors. This paper firstly reviews the typical analytic methodologies for ASs and the main influencing factors during the analytic processes. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) with LC-ESI-MS is currently the leading-edge method. However, the efficiency and accuracy for ASs analysis in environmental samples are also dependent on the SPE cartridges, buffers and pH, matrix effects, and sample stability. A basic procedure for ASs determination in different environmental samples is proposed. The current occurrences of ASs in environments are then evaluated. The ASs, especially the acesulfame and sucralose, are widely detected in various environmental medium. The concentrations of investigated ASs are generally in the order of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) influent > WWTPs effluent > surface water > groundwater > drinking water; and atmosphere > soil. The ASs levels in the environment exhibit significant differences among different regions. Further analysis indicates that the phenomenon is highly correlated with the consumption patterns and the removal efficiency of WWTPs in a specific country.

Chrysotile accounts for some 90% to 95% of all the asbestos used worldwide. Scientific evidences have shown that asbestos (including chrysotile) exposure is associated with increased rates of lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. However, molecular mechanisms underlying the toxicity effects of chrysotile are not clear. This study evaluated the oxidative stress in chronic lung toxicity caused by the intratracheal instillation (IT) of four kinds China representative chrysotile once a month for 12 months in Wistar rats. These results indicated that chrysotile exposure led to an obvious increase in lung mass and slowed the growth of body mass. Inflammation and fibrosis were observed by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. Exposure to chrysotile significantly increased the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the level of lipid peroxidation and decreased antioxidant capacity in lung tissues. Furthermore, 1–6-month chrysotile exposure activated heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) expression, whereas 12-month exposure caused significant decreases of two-factor expression levels in XK and MN groups when compared to negative control group. Therefore, our results suggested that chronic chrysotile pulmonary injury in Wistar rats is triggered by oxidative damage. Meanwhile, the oxidative damage of MN and XK was stronger than that of SSX and AKS, and the difference of oxidative damage in four chrysotile could have been brought by its properties, morphology, chemical composition, and particle size. With all the above mentioned in view, we hope that the revealed data in the experiment could contribute to the progress of further researches on the toxicity and mechanism of chrysotile.

Phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can convert insoluble forms of phosphorus (P) to accessible forms. 11 strains of PSB, including five inorganic phosphate solubilizing bacteria (IPSBs) and six organic phosphate solubilizing bacteria (OPSBs), were isolated from rhizosphere soils of three plants Scirpus planiculmis, Zizania latifolia, and Phrnagmites australis in the Yeyahu Wetland of Beijing, China to investigate P-solubilizing activities. In addition, the distributions of P fractions in soil samples were also observed. All strains evaluated above 1.0 by the ratio of transparent circle diameter to colony diameter (D/d) on Ca₃(PO₄)₂ or lecithin plates were identified by 16S rRNA sequencing. Results showed that Ca-bound P (Ca-P) was the main species of inorganic P (IP), and highly resistant organic P (HR-OP) accounted for the most part of organic P (OP). These strains were identified as bacterial species of Enterobacter asburiae, Acinetobacter sp., Bacillus cereus strain, and so on. The most efficient IPSB strain could convert over 430 mg L⁻¹ orthophosphate, while the equivalent OPSB strain only liberated less than 4 mg L⁻¹ in liquid culture, which indicated that IPSBs have a better P-solubilizing ability than OPSBs in rhizosphere soils of the Yeyahu Wetland and IPSBs are likely to regulate the P transformation process in this wetland.
