Buffer Capacity of Open Atmospheric Gas-Liquid Systems 全文
2007
Wilkosz, I.
Buffer capacity analysis of open atmospheric gas-liquid systems containing main acidic and basic atmospheric pollutants was carried out. Usually the buffer capacity is considered as a function of pH as an independent variable. In this work the buffer capacity is analysed including the dependence of pH on the composition of a system. Such an approach allows finding an important, from the viewpoint of atmospheric water acidification, relationship between the gas phase composition and the buffer capacity. It was found that buffer capacity of the open gas-liquid systems may be very high and it may cause the liquid phase pH to remain at low levels. The buffer capacity of the analysed systems is most strongly affected by the simultaneous presence of ammonia and strong acids in the gas phase. The higher concentrations of strong acid gases the lower NH₃ concentration is sufficient to achieve high buffer capacity. In the presence of strong acid gases, calcium ions affect both the buffer capacity and the liquid phase pH only at low NH₃ concentrations. High buffer capacity of open gas-liquid systems may be one of the reasons why the reduction in emissions of acidic gas pollutants has little effect on decrease in atmospheric water acidity.

In this study adsorption of arsenic (As) onto TiO₂ nanoparticles and the facilitated transport of As into carp (Cyprinus carpio) by TiO₂ nanoparticles was examined. Adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm were conducted by adding As(V) to TiO₂ suspensions. Facilitated transport of As by TiO₂ nanoparticles was assessed by accumulation tests exposing carp to As(V) contaminated water in the presence of TiO₂ nanoparticles. The results showed that TiO₂ nanoparticles had a significant adsorption capacity for As(V). Equilibrium was established within 30 min and the isotherm data was described by Freundlich isotherm. The KF and 1/n were 20.71 mg/g and 0.58, respectively. When exposed to As(V)-contaminated water in the presence of TiO₂ nanoparticles, carp accumulated considerably more As, and As concentration in carp increased by 132% after 25 days exposure. Considerable As and TiO₂ accumulated in intestine, stomach and gills of the fish, and the lowest level of accumulation was found in muscle. Accumulation of As and TiO₂ in stomach, intestine and gills are significant. Arsenic accumulation in these tissues was enhanced by the presence of TiO₂ nanoparticles. TiO₂ nanoparticles that have accumulated in intestine and gills may release adsorbed As and As bound on TiO₂ nanoparticles which cannot be released maybe transported by TiO₂ nanoparticles as they transferred in the body. In this work, an enhancement of 80% and 126% As concentration in liver and muscle after 20 days of exposure was found.

2007
Zhang, Jing
Industrialization and urbanization along the coastal population centers have brought great changes in the land cover and material fluxes from watersheds to receiving bays and estuaries. We have embarked a multiyear research project on “Watersheds Nutrient Loss and Eutrophication of Jiaozhou Bay” for the period of 2000 to 2004, funded by the Natural Science Foundation of China to examine human influence on the marine sector of ecosystem. Jiaozhou Bay, located in the southern part of Shandong Peninsula, was selected because of the existence of long-term hydrographic and meteorological records since the 1930s and recent observations on the marine ecological variables. We have made extensive and periodic measurements on the water movement, nutrients, phytoplankton, and microbe in water column and bottom sediments. Box and 3-dimensional hydrodynamic models were developed and utilized to understand the evolution of eutrophic status with time. It was found that primary productivity has suffered from silica depletion followed by phosphate, and the dominance of large phytoplankton has been replaced by small-size communities. These ecosystem changes were brought by the changes in the relative contribution among major pathways and concentrations, owing to the human activities in the watershed. Eight articles in this volume reported various aspects of the linkage between watershed human activities and ecosystem for the Jiaozhou Bay as the initial outcome of this project.

Emissions of sulphur and oxidized nitrogen compounds in Europe have been reduced following a series of control measures during the last two decades. These changes have taken place during a period in which the primary gases and the wet deposition throughout Europe were extensively monitored. Since the end of the 1970s, for example land based sulphur emissions declined by between 90 and 70% depending on the region. Over the same period the total deposition of sulphur and its partitioning into wet and dry deposition have declined, but the spatial pattern in the reduction in deposition differs from that of emission and has changed with time. Such non-linearities in the emission-deposition relationship are important to understand as they complicate the process of assessing the effects of emission reduction strategies. Observed non-linearities in terrestrial sulphur emission-deposition patterns have been identified in north west Europe due to increases in marine emissions, and are currently slowing the recovery of freshwater ecosystems. Changes in the relative amounts of SO₂ and NH₃ in air over the last two decades have also changed the affinity of terrestrial surfaces for SO₂ and have therefore changed the deposition velocity of SO₂ over substantial areas. The consequence of this effect has been the very rapid reduction in ambient SO₂ concentration in some of the major source areas of Europe, where NH₃ did not change much. Interactions between the different pollutants, generating non-linearities are now being incorporated in long-range transport models to simulate the effects of historical emission trends and to provide projections into the future. This paper identifies non-linearities in emission deposition relationships for sulphur and nitrogen compounds in Europe using data from the EMEP long-rang transport model and measured concentration fields of the major ions in precipitation and of SO₂ and NO₂ in surface air.

Numerous studies have shown that Steamboat Creek in Nevada is highly contaminated with mercury, with aqueous mercury concentrations more than two orders of magnitude greater than nearby mountain streams. One objective of this study was to determine if the new Spreadsheet-based Ecological Risk Assessment for the Fate of Mercury (SERAFM) model could be calibrated to the concentrations of unfiltered and dissolved total mercury, and unfiltered and dissolved MeHg in the water column for a reach on SBC and a related constructed wetland mesocosm for different seasons and residence times. SERAFM is a new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency steady state, single segment, mass balance mercury model that has been applied to lakes, and this study also examined the model’s applicability for modeling an arid flowing water environment in different seasons. The average combined error between observed and model-estimated mercury concentrations was 12% and 17% for the reach and mesocosm, respectively. Some recommendations are proposed that may allow SERAFM to better model flowing systems.

The quantification of arsenic biovolatilization by microscopic filamentous fungi Aspergillus clavatus, A. niger, Trichoderma viride and Penicillium glabrum under laboratory conditions is discussed in this article. The fungi were cultivated on a liquid medium enriched with inorganic arsenic in pentavalent form (H₃AsO₄). Filamentous fungi volatilized 0.010 mg to 0.067 mg and 0.093 mg to 0.262 mg of arsenic from cultivation systems enriched with 0.25 mg (5 mg.l-¹ of arsenic in culture media) and 1.00 mg of arsenic (20 mg.l-¹ of arsenic in culture media), respectively. These results represent the loss of arsenic after a 30-day cultivation from cultivation systems. The production of volatile arsenic derivatives by the A. niger and A. clavatus strains was also determined by hourly sorption using the sorbent Anasorb (CSC) on the 29th day of cultivation.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) with insufficient technologies for wastewater purification often cause a distinct nutrient pollution in the receiving streams. The increased concentrations of dissolved nutrients can severely disturb the ecological integrity of streams, which has been recently shown for basic ecosystem processes like mineralization of coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM). The present study investigated the impact of a modern WWTP (Zentralkläranlage Jena) on breakdown rates of CPOM exposed in net bags (1 mm mesh size) to the effluent of a large municipal WWTP and an upstream control site in the Saale River (Thuringia, Germany) from April to October 2005. Control and effluent site differed significantly in water chemistry with increased concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ammonium, sulfate, and chloride at the effluent site, while the control site displayed higher concentrations of nitrate. However, breakdown rates of toothpickers and small twigs were not significantly different between the sites, whereas breakdown rate of leaf litter was significantly higher at the effluent site (k = 0.0124 day⁻¹) than at the control site (k = 0.0095 day⁻¹). Benthic invertebrate assemblages inhabiting the sandy stream bed at both sites were dominated by Chironomidae and Oligochaeta, typical inhabitants of fine sediments. Although the Shannon diversity of the benthic invertebrates was slightly higher at the effluent site (0.85) than at the control site (0.63), no significant difference could be detected. Bacterial numbers in water samples and surface biofilms on glass slides also displayed no significant differences between the two sites. This study showed that the effluents of a WWTP with modern technologies for wastewater purification did not directly affect breakdown rates of CPOM, bacteria numbers in epibenthic biofilms and the water column, and the community composition of sediment inhabiting aquatic macroinvertebrates in an effluent-receiving river with already increased concentrations of dissolved nutrients.

The effects of soil processes, related to the oxidation of sulphide sediments, on heavy metal concentrations in the soil and soil solution were investigated in a Norway spruce stand on a fine-textured, acidic soil rich in sulphates located on the isostatic land-uplift western coast of Finland. The age of the soil is ca. 300–400 years, and the soil texture is silt and till. The chemical properties of the soil and soil solution clearly reflected the formation of acid sulphate (AS) soil. Compared to background reference values for podzolic coniferous forest soil, the pH of the soil solution in the mineral soil (20–40 cm depth) was very low, and the Al, Fe and S concentrations extremely high. The Zn and Ni concentrations in the soil solution were also strongly elevated, and similar to the concentrations reported close to anthropogenic heavy-metal emission sources. The concentrations of Cd and Cu were also frequently elevated. In contrast, the acidity and metal concentrations of the soil solution sampled in the organic layer were not elevated. Similarly, exchangeable Zn and Ni concentrations were also elevated in the mineral soil, but not in the organic layer. Because Norway spruce has a very superficial rooting system and the zone with exceptionally high metal concentrations did not extend up to the topmost soil layers, sulphide-oxidation derived soil acidification is not likely to pose a serious threat to forest ecosystems growing on this type of site. Despite the elevated concentrations of protons and many metals in the mineral soil and soil solution (20–40 cm), the nutrient status of the spruce stand was satisfactory and the general health of the stand has been reported to be relatively good.

2007
Mandre, Malle | Korsjukov, Reet
The impact of long-term dust pollution emitted from a cement plant on soil chemistry, and the concentrations of plant nutrients, lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose in the stemwood of 80–85-year-old Pinus sylvestris was investigated at different distances from the emission source. It was found that alkaline cement dust (pH 12.3–12.6) emissions for over 40 years resulted in an alkalisation (pH 6.7–7.9) of the polluted soil compared to a pH value of 3.8 in unpolluted soil. There were also nutrient imbalances in the soil, as well as certain disturbances in mineral nutrition processes and accumulation of nutrients in the tree stems. The average concentrations of K, Ca and Mg in stems were higher and those of N and P lower than in the unpolluted area. The lignin (L) content in stemwood increased, hemicellulose (Hc) decreased, while cellulose (Ce) did not change. A variation in the partitioning of L, Ce, Hc and nutrients between different sections of stems and between trees from different sample plots was found. L, Ce and Hc were not related to the internal K, Ca and Mg concentrations. Correlations were established between L, Ce, or Hc content and C content, and between L and Hc content in stem tissues. The contents of wood components were not related to N or P in the alkalised areas, but seemed to be more associated with P than with N. Alterations in the arbitrarily chosen ratio L/(Ce + Hc) indicated changes in wood quality, and a negative correlation with N/P was found in stem tissue in the polluted area, while positive correlations with N/Mg and Ca/Mg were found in the control area.

The prevalence and diversity of antibiotic resistant enterococci populations in samples collected four times from urban sewage treatment plant in Tehran, Iran between June 2005 and July 2006 were studied. Filtered samples were grown on mEnterococci medium containing 4 μg/ml vancomycin after which the enterococci isolates were identified to the species level. All strains were then tested for their resistance against nine antibiotics. Of the 131 isolates, 98 (75%) isolates were identified as Enterococcus gallinarum, followed by 24 (18%) and 9 (7%) for E. faecium and E. casseliflavus, respectively. All E. gallinarum isolates carried vanC1 gene with 64 (65%) and 14 (14%) isolates concomitantly harboured either vanA or vanB gene, respectively. Some E. casseliflavus concomitantly harboured vanA and vanC2 or vanB and vanC2. Typing the total enterococci isolates with a high resolution biochemical fingerprinting method showed a high diversity (D i = 0.91). We have shown by biochemical fingerprinting the presence of highly diverse glycopeptide resistant E. gallinarum and E. casseliflavus that have captured vanA and vanB genetic determinants under natural conditions. To our knowledge this is the first report in this geographical region showing high frequency antibiotic resistant enterococcal populations in particular E. gallinarum carrying assorted vancomycin resistance genes.
