International audience | It is essential to monitor pesticides in soils as their presence at trace levels and their bioavailability can induce adverse effects on soil's ecosystems, animals, and human health. In this study, we developed an analytical method for the quantification of traces of multi-class pesticides in soil using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. In this way, 31 pesticides were selected, including 12 herbicides, 9 insecticides, and 10 fungicides. Two extraction techniques were first evaluated namely: the pressurized liquid extraction and the QuEChERS procedure. The latest one was finally selected and optimized, allowing extraction recoveries of 55 to 118 %. The addition of the chelating agent EDTA, which binds preferentially to soil cations that complex some pesticides, facilitates their extraction. Coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, the procedure displayed very high sensitivity, with limits of quantification (LOQ) in the range 0.01-5.5 ng/g. A good linearity (R² >0.992) was observed over two orders of magnitude (LOQ-100×LOQ) with good accuracy (80%-120 %) for all compounds except the two pyrethroids lambda-cyhalothrin and tau-fluvalinate (accuracy comprised between 50 and 175%) and the cyclohexanedione cycloxydim (accuracy<35%). Good repeatability and reproducibility were also achieved. The method was finally successfully applied to 12 soil samples collected from 3 land-use types. Among the 31-targeted pesticides, 24 were detected at least once, with concentration levels varying from LOQ to 722 ng/g. Many values were below 0.5 ng/g, indicating that the developed method could provide new knowledge on the extremely low residual contents of some pesticides.

International audience | Mangroves are threatened ecosystems that provide numerous ecosystem services, especially through their wide biodiversity, and their bioremediation capacity is a challenging question in tropical areas. In a mangrove in Mayotte, we studied the potential role of microbial biofilm communities in removing nutrient loads from pre-treated wastewater. Microbial community samples were collected from tree roots, sediments, water, and from a colonization device, and their structure and dynamics were compared in two areas: one exposed to sewage and the other not. The samples from the colonization devices accurately reflected the natural communities in terms of diversity. Communities in the zone exposed to sewage were characterized by more green algae and diatoms, higher bacteria densities, as well as different compositions. In the area exposed to sewage, the higher cell densities associated with specific diversity patterns highlighted adapted communities that may play a significant role in the fate of nutrients.

International audience | The performance of 14 large pilot-scale horizontal flow wetlands (similar to 60 m(2)each) designed to treat polluted river water was tested in a 3-year study at the Chenshan Botanical Garden in Shanghai, China. Five local species,Arundo donax,Cyperus alternifolius,Phragmites australis,Thalia dealbataandTypha orientalis, were planted in monocultures and in a polyculture ofPhragmites,ThaliaandTypha.Total nitrogen (TN) removal was compared among species and to an unplanted bed.Each bed was replicated once, and the parallel setup received a TN inflow concentration of 16 mg L(-1)on average over each summer season, a level twice as high as for the beds receiving unspiked inflow. During the first 2 years of operation, the only significant differences in pollutant removal were between planted and unplanted systems. In the third year, significant differences appeared among planted beds in the high nutrient systems, withPhragmitesbeing the most efficient species in TN removal andArundothe least, suggesting that greater inflow and more maturity may be needed before differences can be detected. The polyculture was never significantly more efficient than the other planted systems. However, it ranked among the best systems in 2018. Yet, while a greater removal of the polyculture over the average TN removal of all monocultures taken together may develop over time, we found no evidence that the polyculture may get more efficient than the best monoculture. Observation over all phases of plant establishment made it possible to draw conclusions for future design and operation.

Most of these systems were installed in the1980s and have aged since then and may now need maintenance. Sometimes, the location of the systems is known, but the standard situation in France is that the original as-built master sketches are no longer available. Performance assessment of drainage systems and curative actions are complicated since drain location is unknown. In this article, the authors test the application of a non-destructive drain detection method which consists in water injection at the outfall of the drainage network combined with time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) monitoring. To assess the performance of this methodology, which consists in measuring electrical resistivity from electrodes placed at the nodes of a 1.2-m regular mesh, the authors interpreted the signal using a two-step approach. The first step is based on 3D ERT numerical modelling during a scenario of surface infiltration processes (forward modelling followed by geophysical inversion); this step optimizes the ERT method for locating the infiltration at depths below 1m. The second step is the validation of the results obtained by numerical modelling with an experimental data set, using water injection into the drainage network combined with time-lapse ERT monitoring on an experimental field site. The results showed the relevance of time-lapse ERT monitoring on a small agricultural plot for locating the drainage network. The numerical results also showed several limitations of the combined methodology: (i) it is necessary to use an electrode spacing unit less than 1.20m, which does not facilitate investigation on large agriculture plots, (ii) measurements must be taken when resistivity contrast is the strongest between the infiltration area and the soil and (iii) the volume of water needed for injection can limit the extension of the method.

International audience | Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was used to determine the equilibrium association constant for a pesticide, trifluralin (TFR), with dissolved organic matter (DOM). After optimization of the SPME method for the analysis of TFR, partition coefficients (KDOM) with three different sources ofDOM were determined in buffered solutions at pH 7. Commercial humic acids and DOM fractions isolated from two surface waters were used. The values of log KDOM varied from 4.3 to 5.8, depending on the nature of the organic material. A good correlation was established between log KDOM and DOMproperties (as measured with the H/O atomic ratio and UV absorbance), in agreement with literature data. This is consistent with the effect of polarity and aromaticity for governing DOM-pollutant associations, regardless of the origin of DOM. This association phenomenon is relevant to better understand the behavior of pesticides in the environment since it controls part of pesticide leaching and fate in aquatic systems.

Morocco is the first country producer of phosphate in the world with a real potential of contamination of the environment and individuals there living by fluorine either by phosphate deposits (hydrotelluric fluorosis) and phosphate manufacturing plants (industrial fluorosis). This survey was achieved on 86 dromedaries in a region of the Sahara (Boujdour and Laâyoune) characterized by the presence of phosphate. In addition, blood, soil, water and plant samples were collected for the dosage of fluorine that has been achieved by potentiometric method. The mean fluorine content was below 0.47 ppm, 513 ppm and 4.8 ppm in water, soil and plants respectively. The provinces of Boujdour and Laâyoune are unscathed zones opposite the sources of fluorine contamination, as water, vegetation and soil. The mean plasma fluorine concentration was below 0.06 ppm, thus, the camels of these regions seem therefore also free of fluorine chronic intoxication. However the increased values of fluorine levels in the soil, vegetables, and the plasma of camels in the region of Boujdour can let suppose that this area is close to a source of fluorine contamination. Indeed, the province of Boujdour is located unless 200 km of Boukraa where is situated a processing plant of phosphates. Thus, according orientation and the strength of the present dominant winds in the region of Boujdour, we can give out the hypothesis that by winds are brought in the region of Boujdour of the fluorine particles coming from the region of Boukraa. These winds carrying particles of fluorine eliminated by the factory and also by the extraction of soil particles by erosion. This hypothesis can be verified by a survey establishing a gradient of pollution by fluorine cleared by the deposit or the processing plant of the phosphates considering the direction and the strength of the dominant winds in these regions.
