Over time, the consumption of pharmaceutical drugs has highly augmented, directly contributing for an increase of the discharges of these substances into sewage water due to excretion, and their direct release to the environment, with or without adequate treatment. Considering that part of the sewage water is dumped into rivers and seas, this is the major source of contamination of the aquatic environment. Paracetamol and acetylsalicylic acid are among the most worldwide consumed pharmaceutical drugs, frequently found in wastewater discharges and consequently in the aquatic environment in considerable amounts, posing ecotoxicity concerns especially towards aquatic non-target species. Thus, it is important to study the ecotoxicological implications that these drugs might pose to organisms from aquatic environments. The objective of this study was to assess the toxic effects of these two compounds on key biochemical features (antioxidant defenses and damage, metabolism, and cholinergic neurotoxicity) of the marine snail species Gibbula umbilicalis after an acute (96 h) exposure, simulating pulses of contamination. In order to understand the effects that those drugs have on this species, the biochemical biomarkers analyzed were the activities of catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs), cholinesterases (ChEs), and the levels of lipid peroxidation (TBARS). After acute exposure to paracetamol, catalase activity decreased significantly in organisms exposed to both highest concentrations; no significant alterations were observed for glutathione-S-transferases activity; TBARS concentration decreased significantly in organisms exposed to the intermediate and both highest concentrations, and cholinesterase activity increased significantly in animals exposed to the lowest concentration. However, after acute exposure to acetylsalicylic acid, catalase activity increased significantly; no significant alterations were observed for glutathione-S-transferases activity, and TBARS concentrations and cholinesterase activity increased. This set of data shows that G. umbilicalis is highly responsive to the presence of the tested drugs, and may thus be a promising species to serve as test organism in future marine ecotoxicological testing. The adoption of this species may broaden the offer of highly ecologically representative test organisms to be included in biomonitoring projects of the coastal and marine environment. Furthermore, it is possible to suggest that both drugs may pose significant deleterious effects of pro-oxidative origin to the physiology of the selected species, with potential adverse ecological consequences, even after short periods of exposure. The absence of neurotoxicity showed that despite being able to trigger antioxidant mechanisms, both drugs did not affect neurotransmission.

Microplastics (MPs) are widely recognised as a contaminant of emerging concern in the marine environment. This work provides original data of the presence of MPs in coastal sediments along the Spanish Mediterranean continental shelf. Ten surface sediment samples were collected in order to document baseline microplastic distribution from Algeciras to Barcelona. Microplastics were extracted from bulk sediments by density separation. The number of microplastics per kilogramme of dry weight ranged from 45.9 ± 23.9 MPs/kg d.w. observed at Palma de Mallorca to 280.3 ± 164.9 MPs/kg d.w. noted at Málaga, with an average value of 113.2 ± 88.9 MPs/kg d.w. The lower limit is defined by the pore filter size used (1.2 μm). For all analysed locations, the dominant microplastic type was fibres (82.9%), followed by fragments, and the main colours were transparent and blue. Microplastic size distribution was presented; in the case of fragments, 85% was lower than 0.5 mm, and in the case of fibres, the three studied intervals (0.5–1, 1–2, 2–5 mm) had similar distribution (35, 34 and 31%, respectively). Attending to all available data, no statistically significant relationship (Spearman’s correlation) was found between microplastic average size and distance to the coast, the depth, density population and sediment grain size. Neither relationship was observed between these variables and microplastic concentration using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis H test. This study has confirmed the widespread distribution of MPs in surface sediments from the Spanish Mediterranean continental shelf, and these data are useful to define baselines for MPs in the Western Mediterranean region.

Household consumption has been identified to have an essential role in influencing ultimately the environmental pressures generated by human activities. This study assesses the indirect environmental footprint of the Spanish households applying a combination of consumer expenditure surveys with environmentally extended multi-regional input–output analysis. A total of fourteen environmental impact categories are studied from 2006 to 2015. All the impact categories present a similar trend, particularly affected by the economic crisis. The impacts decreased from 2008 to 2013 and finally slightly started rising again from 2014 to 2015. Results show that the dominant categories influencing the indirect environmental footprint in 2015 are (1) food and beverages, (2) housing, and (3) furnishings. From the intensity perspective, housing, transport, and food and beverages appear to be the most intensive consumption clusters in the Spanish household indirect environmental footprint. In relation to the indirect water impacts embodied in the Spanish households’ imports, the largest amount is from European countries and the highest virtual water (59%) corresponds to food and agriculture, in particular from wheat, fruit, vegetables, and dairy products. The findings obtained in relation to the sources generating indirect impacts from household consumption could aid the implementation of future mitigation policies.

Human activities have increased anthropogenic CO₂ emissions, which are believed to play important roles in global warming. The spatiotemporal variations of CO₂ concentration and flux at fine spatial scales in aquaculture ponds remain unclear, particularly in China, the country with the largest aquaculture. In this study, the plot-scale spatiotemporal variations of water CO₂ concentration and flux, both within and among ponds, were researched in shrimp ponds in Shanyutan Wetland, Min River Estuary, Southeast China. The average water CO₂ concentration and flux across the water–air interface in the shrimp ponds over the shrimp farming period varied from 22.79 ± 0.54 to 186.66 ± 8.71 μmol L⁻¹ and from − 0.50 ± 0.04 to 2.87 ± 0.78 mol m⁻² day⁻¹, respectively. There was no remarkable difference in CO₂ concentration and flux within the ponds, but significantly spatiotemporal differences in CO₂ flux were observed between shrimp ponds. Chlorophyll a, pH, salinity, air temperature, and morphometry were the important factors driving the spatiotemporal patterns of CO₂ flux in the shrimp ponds. Our findings highlighted the importance and spatiotemporal variations of CO₂ flux in the important coastal ecosystems.

Compared to antibiotic parent molecule, human metabolites are generally more polar and sometimes not less toxic in wastewater. However, most researches focus on the fate of parent molecule. Therefore, behaviors of human metabolites are little known. Moreover, though much has been done on the fate of antibiotics during activated sludge process, there are still some limitations and gaps. In the present study, [Ring-¹⁴C] acetyl sulfamethoxazole (¹⁴C-Ac-SMX) was used to investigate the fate of human metabolite of SMX during activated sludge process at environmentally relevant concentration. At the end of 216 h, 3.1% of the spiked activity in the initial aqueous phase was mineralized, 50% was adsorbed onto the solid phase, and 36.5% still remained in the aqueous phase, indicating that adsorption, not biodegradation, was the main dissipation pathway. In the existence of microbial activities, accumulation into the solid phase was much higher, which was less bioavailable by chemical sequential extraction. The multimedia kinetic model simultaneously depicted the fate of Ac-SMX in the gas, aqueous, and solid phases, and demonstrated that microbially accelerated accumulation onto the solid phase was attributed to lower desorption rate from the solid phase to the aqueous phase, where adsorption rate was not the key factor. Therefore, Ac-SMX cannot be efficiently mineralized and remain in the aqueous or the solid phases. The accumulation in the solid phase is less bioavailable and is hard to be desorbed in the existence of microbial activities, and should not be easily degraded, and may lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes after discharge into the environment.

Pollution from bromine and some of its related compounds is currently unregulated in soil from Russia and other countries, and tools for sound assessment of environmental impacts of bromine contamination are largely missing. Hence, assessing potential implications for humans and ecosystems of bromine soil contamination is urgently needed, which requires the combination of measured soil concentrations from environmental studies and quantified potential toxicity impacts. To address this need, we used data from an experimental study assessing bromine in soils (384 samples) of Tomsk oblast, Russia, starting from measured concentrations obtained by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis in an earlier study. From these data, we calculated the bromine mass in soils and used these as starting point to characterize related cumulative impacts on human health and ecosystems in the Tomsk region, using a global scientific consensus model for screening-level comparative toxicity characterization of chemical emissions. Results show that the combination of sampling methodology with toxicity characterization techniques presents a new approach to be used in environmental studies aimed at environmental assessment and analysis of a territory. Our results indicate that it is important to account for substance-specific chemical reaction pathways and transfer processes, as well as to consider region-specific environmental characteristics. Our approach will help complement environmental assessment results with environmental sustainability elements, to consider potential tradeoffs in impacts, related to soil pollution, in support of improved emission and pollution reduction strategies.

Spatial distribution and risk assessment of heavy metals inside and outside a typical lead-zinc mine in southeastern China 全文

Mining activity is an important source of heavy metals in soil. Understanding the contents and distribution of heavy metals in mineral-waste soil and surrounding environments is important for the rational management of mines and reducing the migration of heavy metals to surrounding environments. We used a non-ferrous metal mine in southern China as a research object. Three types of sampling site (A–C) were established on the mineral-waste soil in the mining area and on nearby farmland (D) and along a river channel (E) outside the mining area: A, newly processed mineral-waste soil; B, steep 6-month-old stack of waste soil; C, gentle slope of 12-month-old waste soil; D, farmland soil within 1 km of the mine; and E, river water and adjacent soil. Soil samples were collected from the 0–10-cm layer at each site type. The contents and spatial distribution of Pb, Zn, and Cd at the sampling sites were analyzed, and the environmental risks were evaluated. The mean Pb, Zn, and Cd contents in the mining area (types A–C) were 2028, 3794, and 14.8 mg kg⁻¹, respectively, which were 8-, 19-, and 49-fold higher than the second-level limits of the Environmental Quality Standard for Soils of China, and the mean contents of Pb, Zn, and Cd for sites D and E were 76.4, 131, and 0.18 mg kg⁻¹ and 147, 194, and 0.95 mg kg⁻¹, respectively, all of which were under the second-level limits. Sites C and E were also used to analyze the spatial distribution of the Pb, Zn, and Cd contents. Geostatistical analysis found that the Pb, Zn, and Cd contents had a clear and similar spatial pattern at site C and generally decreased from north to south. Soil Pb, Zn, and Cd contents at site E generally increased, and water Pb, Zn, and Cd concentrations decreased along the river channel. The soils at site types A–C in the mining area were heavily polluted, with a high potential threat to the surrounding environment, and the farmland and river-bank soils at D and E were free of pollution or were lightly polluted, with low potential ecological risks. This study provides a scientific basis and supporting data for heavy-metal treatment in mining areas.

Poor removal of many pharmaceuticals and personal care products in sewage treatment plants leads to their discharge into the receiving waters, where they may cause negative effects for aquatic environment and organisms. In this study, electrochemical removal process has been used as alternative method for removal of mefenamic acid (MEF). For our knowledge, removal of MEF using electrochemical process has not been reported yet. Effects of initial concentration of mefenamic acid, sodium chloride (NaCl), and applied voltage were evaluated for improvement of the efficiency of electrochemical treatment process and to understand how much electric energy was consumed in this process. Removal percentage (R%) was ranged between 44 and 97%, depending on the operating parameters except for 0.1 g NaCl which was 9.1%. Consumption energy was 0.224 Wh/mg after 50 min at 2 mg/L of mefenamic acid, 0.5 g NaCl, and 5 V. High consumption energy (0.433 Wh/mg) was observed using high applied voltage of 7 V. Investigation and elucidation of the transformation products were provided by Bruker software dataAnalysis using liquid chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry. Seven chlorinated and two non-chlorinated transformation products were investigated after 20 min of electrochemical treatment. However, all transformation products (TPs) were eliminated after 140 min. For the assessment of the toxicity, it was impacted by the formation of transformation products especially between 20 and 60 min then the inhibition percentage of E. coli bacteria was decreased after 80 min to be the lowest value.

Phytoremediation combined with amendments and stabilization technologies are two crucial methods to deal with soil contaminated with heavy metals. Copper (Cu) contamination in soil near Cu mines poses a serious threat to ecosystems and human health. This study investigated the effect of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and biochar (BC) on the accumulation and subcellular distribution of Cu in Amaranthus retroflexus L. to demonstrate the remediation mechanism of EDTA and BC at the cellular level. The role of calcium (Ca) in response to Cu stress in A. retroflexus was also elucidated. We designed a pot experiment with a randomized block of four Cu levels (0, 100, 200, 400 mg kg⁻¹) and three treatments (control, amendment with EDTA, and amendment with BC). The subcellular components were divided into three parts (cell walls, organelles, and soluble fraction) by differential centrifugation. The results showed that EDTA amendment significantly increased (p < 0.05) the concentrations of Cu in root cell walls and all subcellular components of stems and leaves (cell walls, organelles, and the soluble fraction). EDTA amendment significantly increased (p < 0.05) the proportion of exchangeable fraction and carbonate fraction in the soil. While BC amendment significantly decreased (p < 0.05) the concentrations of Cu in root cell walls and the root soluble fraction, it had no significant effects on Cu concentrations in the subcellular components of stems and leaves. The results revealed that EDTA mainly promoted the transfer of Cu to aboveground parts and accumulation in subcellular components of stems and leaves, while BC mainly limited Cu accumulation in root cell walls and the root soluble fraction. Ca concentrations in cell walls of roots, stems, and leaves increased as the Cu stress increased in all treatment groups, indicating that Ca plays an important role in relieving Cu toxicity in Amaranthus retroflexus L.
