In order to tackle China’s severe air pollution issue, the government has released the “Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan” (known simply as the “Action Plan”) since 2013. A recent study reported a decreased trend in PM₂.₅ concentrations over 2013–2017, but O₃ pollution has become more serious. However, the effects of surface O₃ on crops are unclear after the implementation of the “Action Plan”. Here, we evaluated the potential negative effects of surface O₃ on three main food crops (winter wheat, maize and rice) across China during 2015–2018 using nationwide O₃ monitoring data and AOT40-yield response functions. Results suggested that mean O₃ concentration, AOT40 and relative yield loss in China showed an overall upward trend from 2015 to 2018. During winter wheat, maize, single rice, double-early rice, and double-late rice growing seasons, mean O₃ concentration in recent years ranged from 38.6 to 46.9 ppb, 40.2–43.9 ppb, 39.3–42.2 ppb, 33.8–40.0 ppb, and 35.9–39.1 ppb, respectively, and AOT40 mean values ranged from 8.5 to 14.3 ppm h, 10.5–13.4 ppm h, 9.8–11.9 ppm h, 5.2–9.2 ppm h, and 8.0–9.5 ppm h, respectively. O₃-induced yield reductions were estimated to range from 20.1 to 33.3% for winter wheat, 5.0–6.3% for maize, 7.3–8.8% for single rice, 3.9–6.8% for double-early rice and 5.9–7.1% for double-late rice. O₃-induced production losses for winter wheat, maize, single rice, double-early rice, and double-late rice totaled 39.5–88.2 million metric tons, 12.6–21.0 million metric tons, 9.5–11.3 million metric tons, 1.2–1.8 million metric tons, and 2.2–2.7 million metric tons, respectively, and the corresponding economic losses totaled 14.3–32.0 billion US$, 3.9–6.5 billion US$, 3.9–4.6 billion US$, 0.5–0.7 billion US$, and 0.9–1.1 billion US$, respectively. Our results suggested that the government should take effective measures to reduce O₃ pollution and its effects on agricultural production.

Following the 16TAN Husky oil spill along the North Saskatchewan River (NSR), the occurrence and natural attenuation of the petroleum hydrocarbons were assessed by analyzing the littoral zone sediments/oil debris collected from July 2016 to October 2017. Husky oil-free, mixed sediment-Husky oil, and Husky oil debris samples were identified for all the collected samples. Shoreline sediments were contaminated by mixed biogenic, pyrogenic and petrogenic inputs prior to the spill. Oil stranded on the shoreline of NSR was moved or buried due to the very dynamic conditions of the shoreline, or cleaned through a series of cleanup activities after the spill. Most normal alkanes were naturally weathered, whereas most of the branched alkanes and all of the saturated petroleum biomarkers remained. Some lighter molecular weight (e.g., 2 to 3-ring) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were lost rapidly after the spill, whereas sulfur containing components, e.g., dibenzothiophenes and benzonaphthothiiophenes, and those having a heavier molecular weight did not change markedly even 15 months post-spill. Similarly, some light hydrocarbons (e.g., <C₁₀) were lost over the first kilometers from the point of entry (POE), while heavier hydrocarbons did not show any major differences away from the POE. Very large inter-site and inter-survey discrepancies were found for samples. Evaporation into the air and dissolution into water, combined with biodegradation, were together or independently the main contributors to the loss of the light molecular hydrocarbons.

Microplastic pollution has become an emergency issue in the global environment. However, little is known about the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in agroecological system. In this study, we investigated the pollution of microplastics in vegetable farmlands in suburb of Wuhan, central China. Results showed that the abundance of microplastics ranged from 320 to 12,560 items/kgdw. Microplastic pollution adjacent to the suburban roads was about 1.8 times as serious as that in the residential areas. Microplastics with size less than 0.2 mm were dominated, reaching 70% in total. The main types of microplastics were fibers and microbeads. Moreover, polyamide (32.5%) and polypropylene (28.8%) were the main types of polymer. This study proclaims the occurrence and characteristics of microplastic pollution in typical farmland soils of suburb land. It may provide significant basis for subsequent research about microplastics contaminant in the terrestrial ecosystem.

2020

Trichloropropyl phosphate (TCPP) is a halogenated organophosphate ester that is widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers. In this study, gender-specific accumulation and responses in mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis to TCPP exposure were focused and highlighted. After TCPP (100 nmol L⁻¹) exposure for 42 days, male mussels showed similar average bioaccumulation (37.14 ± 6.09 nmol g⁻¹ fat weight (fw)) of TCPP with that in female mussels (32.28 ± 4.49 nmol g⁻¹ fw). Proteomic analysis identified 219 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) between male and female mussels in control group. There were 52 and 54 DEPs induced by TCPP in male and female mussels, respectively. Interestingly, gender-specific DEPs included 37 and 41 DEPs induced by TCPP in male and female mussels, respectively. The proteomic differences between male and female mussels were related to protein synthesis and degradation, energy metabolism, and functions of cytoskeleton and motor proteins. TCPP influenced protein synthesis, energy metabolism, cytoskeleton functions, immunity, and reproduction in both male and female mussels. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks indicated that protein synthesis and energy metabolism were the main biological processes influenced by TCPP. However, DEPs involved in these processes and their interaction patterns were quite different between male and female mussels. Basically, twelve ribosome DEPs which directly or indirectly interacted were found in protein synthesis in TCPP-exposed male mussels, while only 3 ribosome DEPs (not interacted) in TCPP-exposed female mussels. In energy metabolism, only 4 DEPs (with the relatively simple interaction pattern) mainly resided in fatty acid metabolism, butanoate/propanoate metabolism and glucose metabolism were discovered in TCPP-exposed male mussels, and more DEPs (with multiple interactions) functioned in TCA cycle and pyruvate/glyoxylate/dicarboxylate metabolism were found in TCCP-exposed female mussels. Taken together, TCPP induced gender-specific toxicological effects in mussels, which may shed new lights on further understanding the toxicological mechanisms of TCPP in aquatic organisms.

Arsenic (As) has been recognized as one of the most toxic metalloids present in the surface soil contaminating food chain and posing threat to human life. Sulfur (S) fertilizer is often supplied in paddy soil for rice growth, but its impact on As mobility and related bacteria remains poorly understood. In this study, a pot experiment was set up with two different types of sulfur treatments (element sulfur and Na₂SO₄) to evaluate the effect of sulfur fertilizers on As speciation in porewater, As fractions in soil, As accumulation in rice plants. Besides, rhizosphere bacterial composition and functional genes that might influence As mobility were also studied. The results revealed that the addition of 150 mg/kg Na₂SO₄ decreased As(III) and As(V) concentrations in soil porewater at maturation stage by 77% and 64%, respectively. With the same sulfur content, Na₂SO₄ was more effective than element sulfur. The addition of sulfur fertilizers promoted rice growth and reduced As accumulation in shoots, further reduced As translocation from root to above-ground parts by 39–59%. The addition of sulfur fertilizers had little effect on genes involved in As metabolism. However, the relative abundance of Fe(III) and sulfate reduction related genera increased with the addition of 150 mg/kg Na₂SO₄, consistent with the increase of Fe(III) reducing bacteria Geobacteraceae and sulfate reducing gene dsrA. The phenomenon likely influenced the decrease of As concentrations in soil porewater and rice uptake. The outcomes indicate that promoting Fe- and S- reducing bacteria in the rhizosphere by sulfur fertilizers may be one way to reduce As risk in the soil-rice system.

Canha, Nuno | Alves, Ana Carolina | Marta, Catarina Simão | Lage, Joana | Belo, Joana | Faria, Tiago | Cabo Verde, Sandra | Viegas, Carla | Alves, Célia | Almeida, Susana Marta
This study aimed to provide a comprehensive characterisation of the indoor air quality during the sleeping period of 10 couples at Lisbon dwellings, using a multi-pollutant approach, and to understand how the compliance with legislation and guidelines was to assure a good indoor air quality. The assessment of indoor air quality was conducted in the cold season using real time monitors during the sleeping period for comfort parameters (temperature and relative humidity) and air pollutants (carbon dioxide – CO₂, carbon monoxide – CO, formaldehyde – CH₂O, total volatile organic compounds – VOCs, and particulate matter – PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀), together with active sampling of bioaerosols (fungi and bacteria) before and after the sleeping period. Lower compliance (less than 50% of the cases) with the Portuguese legislation was found for temperature, CO₂ (3440 ± 1610 mg m⁻³), VOCs (1.79 ± 0.99 mg m⁻³) and both bioaerosol types. In 70% of the cases, PM₂.₅ (15.3 ± 9.1 μg m⁻³) exceeded the WHO guideline of 10 μg m⁻³. All bedrooms presented air change rates above the recommended minimum value of 0.7 h⁻¹, highlighting that a good indoor air quality during sleep is not guaranteed.

Anaerobic reductive treatment technologies offer cost-effective and large-scale treatment of chlorinated compounds, including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs). The information about the degradation rates of these compounds in natural settings is critical but difficult to obtain because of slow degradation processes. Establishing a relationship between biotransformation rate and abundance of biomarkers is one of the most critical challenges faced by the bioremediation industry. When solved for a given contaminant, it may result in significant cost savings because of serving as a basis for action. In the current review, we have summarized the studies highlighting the use of biomarkers, particularly DNA and RNA, as a proxy for reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethenes. As the use of biomarkers for predicting biotransformation rates has not yet been executed for PCDD/Fs, we propose the extension of the same knowledge for dioxins, where slow degradation rates further necessitate the need for developing the biomarker-rate relationship. For this, we have first retrieved and calculated the bioremediation rates of different PCDD/Fs and then highlighted the key sequences that can be used as potential biomarkers. We have also discussed the implications and hurdles in developing such a relationship. Improvements in current techniques and collaboration with some other fields, such as biokinetic modeling, can improve the predictive capability of the biomarkers so that they can be used for effectively predicting biotransformation rates of dioxins and related compounds. In the future, a valid and established relationship between biomarkers and biotransformation rates of dioxin may result in significant cost savings, whilst also serving as a basis for action.

2020
Gao, Xuan | Deng, Rui | Lin, Daohui
As an important part of extracellular secondary metabolites, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) can play a significant role in protecting cells from the threat of exogenous substances, including nanoparticles (NPs). However, the regulation mechanisms of EPS secretion under NPs exposure remain largely unknown. This study investigated the signaling pathways and molecular responses related to EPS secretion of algae (Chlorella pyrenoidosa) upon the exposures to anatase and rutile TiO₂ NPs (nTiO₂-A and nTiO₂-R, respectively) at two similar toxic (20% and 50% of algal growth inhibition) concentrations. The results showed that EPS responded to nTiO₂ stress via excess secretion and compositional variation, and nTiO₂-A induced more EPS secretion than nTiO₂-R at similar toxicity concentrations. The up-regulation of the Ca²⁺ signaling pathway might play a greater role in promoting EPS secretion under nTiO₂-R exposure compared with nTiO₂-A exposure, while the significantly increased intracellular ROS could mainly account for the increased EPS secretion under nTiO₂-A exposure. The up-regulated genes related to biological synthesis and protein metabolism and the enhanced biosynthetic metabolism might be the direct causes of the increased EPS secretion. The increased ROS could have a greater effect on the amino acid metabolism and related genes upon the exposure to nTiO₂-A than nTiO₂-R to induce more EPS secretion. More serious membrane damage caused by nTiO₂-R than nTiO₂-A would affect the intracellular inositol phospholipid metabolism more severely, while the inositol phospholipid pathway and Ca²⁺ signaling pathway might agree and communicate with each other inherently to regulate EPS secretion upon nTiO₂-R exposure. The findings address the regulation mechanisms of algal EPS secretion under nTiO₂ exposure and provide new insights into algal bio-responses to nTiO₂ exposure.

2020
Vuong, Quang Tran | Thang, Phan Quang | Nguyen, Tuyet Nam Thi | Ohura, Takeshi | Choi, Sung-Deuk
Atmospheric halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Halo-PAHs) and parent PAHs were monitored in Ulsan, South Korea for one year (January‒December 2015) to investigate their seasonal patterns, gas/particle partitioning behavior, and the impact of meteorological conditions. The mean concentrations of 24 chlorinated PAHs, 11 brominated PAHs, and 13 parent PAHs in the gaseous and particulate phases were 8.64 and 9.64 pg/m³, 11.6 and 1.62 pg/m³, and 2.17 and 2.40 ng/m³, respectively. Winter had the highest ClPAH and PAH levels, with significant contributions from poly-chlorine groups and high-molecular-weight compounds. However, BrPAHs showed reverse patterns with the highest concentration in summer and the dominant gaseous fraction throughout the year. This finding could be explained by the strong local sources of BrPAHs, related to automobile and petrochemical industries. In contrast, the effects of the temperature inversion layer and atmospheric transport from the outside of Ulsan were more apparent for ClPAHs and PAHs, particularly in winter and spring. Regarding gas/particle partitioning, Halo-PAHs exhibited different seasonal behaviors from those of parent PAHs. The sorption pathway of Halo-PAHs seemed to shift from absorption as the sole dominant mechanism in winter and spring to both adsorption and absorption in summer and fall, while both partitioning mechanisms contributed equally for parent PAHs during the entire year. This study implies that Halo-PAHs and parent PAHs might not share the same atmospheric behavior, possibly due to different characteristics in atmospheric reactions with other chemicals and particle-size distribution. However, there have been limited studies about the formation of Halo-PAHs and their physicochemical properties; hence, further in-depth investigations are of vital importance.

Both biochar (BC) and wood vinegar (WV) influence the nitrous oxide (N₂O) and methane (CH₄) emissions from agricultural systems. However, the impacts of BC and WV co-application on rice production, N₂O and CH₄ emissions are not well documented. We here conducted a two-year soil columns experiment with four treatments: WV (5 t WV ha⁻¹), BC (7.5 t BC ha⁻¹), WV + BC (5 t WV ha⁻¹ +7.5 t BC ha⁻¹) and a control (no treatment). The results showed that BC and WV + BC produced higher rice grain yield than the control by 14.1–15.9% in 2016 and by 4.1–5.2% in 2017, respectively. While WV increased rice grain yield by 11.2% in 2016, it had no significant influence on yield in 2017. Both WV and BC significantly mitigated N₂O emissions by 22.4–41.8% in 2016 and 22.4–36.9% in 2017, respectively. Interestingly, WV + BC treatment showed the highest N₂O mitigation efficiency, with a 52.9–62.8% mitigations in 2016 and 2017. Furthermore, the co-application of WV and BC significantly mitigated CH₄ emissions by 42.6% in 2016 and 35.3% in 2017, respectively, while applying WV or BC alone had no annually-consistent mitigation effect on CH₄ emissions. Overall, GWPt of rice growth cycle was most significantly suppressed by WV + BC with a 48.7–56.1% reduction, followed by WV and BC with 20.4–28.0% and 19.7–35.7% reductions, respectively. Consequently, the WV + BC treatment had the highest GHGI mitigation effect, averaging with 56.7% over two consecutive rice growth cycles. In conclusion, co-application of WV and BC is recommended for rice cultivation, which can both improve rice yield and minimize GHG emissions.
