The work was conducted to establish contamination from improper disposal of hazardous wastes containing lead (Pb) and antimony (Sb) into nearby soils. Besides other elements in the affected area, the biological role of Sb, its behaviour in the pedosphere and uptake by plants and the food chain was considered. Wastes contained 139532 ± 9601 mg kg−1 (≈14%) Pb and 3645 ± 194 mg kg−1 (≈0.4%) Sb respectively and variability was extremely high at a decimetre scale. Dramatically high concentrations were also found for As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Sn and Zn. In adjacent natural soils metal(oid)s amounts decreased considerably (Pb 5034 ± 678 mg kg−1, Sb 112 mg kg−1) though largely exceeded the directives for a given soil use. Metal(oid)s potential mobility was assessed by using H2O→KNO3→EDTA sequential extractions, and EDTA extracts showed the highest concentration suggesting stable humus-metal complexes formation. Nevertheless, selected plants showed high absorption potential of the investigated elements. Pb and Sb values for Dittrichia viscosa grown in wastes was 899 ± 627 mg kg−1 and 37 ± 33 mg kg−1 respectively. The same plant showed 154 ± 99 mg kg−1 Pb and 8 ± 4 mg kg−1 Sb in natural soils. Helichrysum stoechas had 323 ± 305 mg kg−1 Pb, and 8 ± 3 mg kg−1 Sb. Vitis vinifera from alongside vineyards contained 129 ± 88 mg kg−1 Pb and 18 ± 9 mg kg−1 Sb, indicating ability for metal uptake and warning on metal diffusion through the food chain. The biological absorption coefficient (BAC) and the translocation factor (TF) assigned phytoextraction potential to Dittrichia viscosa and Foeniculum vulgare and phytostabilization potential to Helichrysum stoechas. Dissolved metal (oid)s in the analysed water strongly exceeded the current directive being a direct threat for livings. Data warned against the high contamination of the affected area in all its compartments. Even though native plants growing in metal-contaminated sites may have phytoremediation potential, high risk of metal diffusion may threat the whole ecosystem.

Trace elements (TEs) availability, biochemical activity and functional gene diversity was studied in a Cu-contaminated soil, revegetated for six years with a mixed stand of willow, black poplar, and false indigo-bush, and amended or not with compost plus dolomitic limestone (OMDL). The OMDL amendment significantly reduced Cu and As availability and soil toxicity, and increased the biochemical activity and microbial functional diversity assessed with the GEOCHIP technique, as compared to the unamended soil (Unt). The OMDL soil showed significantly higher abundance of 25 functional genes involved in decomposition organic compounds, and 11, 3 and 11 functional genes involved in the N, P and S biogeochemical cycles. Functional gene abundance was positively correlated with nutrient contents but negatively correlated with Cu availability and soil toxicity. The abundance of microbial functional genes encoding for resistance to various TEs also increased, possibly due to the microbial proliferation and lower Cu exposure in the presence of high total soil Cu concentration. Genes encoding for antibiotic resistance due to the co-occurrence of TEs and antibiotic resistant genes on genetic mobile elements. Overall, phytomanagement confirmed its potential to restore the biological fertility and diversity of a severely Cu-contaminated soil, but the increase of TEs and antibiotic resistant gene abundances deserve attention in future studies.

Excessive amounts of fluoride in drinking groundwater are harmful to human health, but the mechanisms responsible for fluoride enrichment in groundwater are not fully understood. Samples from two neighboring areas with endemic fluorosis were collected to test the hypothesis that there are distinctly different mechanisms responsible for the enrichment of fluoride in these groundwater. Hydrochemistry, stable isotopes and geochemical simulation were conducted together to investigate the fluoride spatial distribution and the diversity of responsible mechanisms. Our results showed that the spatial distributions of fluoride are different: I) high [F] in fresh shallow groundwater (SGQJ) and II) medium [F] in fresh to brackish deep groundwater (DGQJ) in the Qiji area; and III) medium [F] in brackish shallow groundwater (SGYH) and IV) low [F] in fresh deep groundwater (DGYH) in the Yanhu area. We also found that the fluoride concentration in groundwater is primarily controlled by the dissolution equilibrium of fluorite, as suggested by the correlation between [F] and [Ca]. However, there are other significant mechanisms: 1) for SGQJ, fluoride-bearing minerals (such as fluorite) dissolution, along with moderate evaporation, cation exchange and the more alkaline conditions are the driving factors; 2) for SGYH, the contributing factors are strong evaporation, the salt effect, dissolution of evaporites, gypsum and dolomite, bicarbonate-fluoride competition and anthropogenic activity; 3) for DGQJ, cation exchange, alkaline conditions and competitive adsorption are major factors; and 4) dolomite dissolution promotes the [F] increase in DGYH. Our findings suggest that the hydrogeochemical conditions play key roles in the enrichment of fluoride and that caution should be taken in the future when evaluating fluoride occurrence in groundwater, even in nearby areas.

Methodology to quantify and distinguish the spatial distribution of the risks from multiple pollutants within the region was developed in this paper. An integrated quantitative risk assessment was conducted by utilizing a large amount of information available to explore spatial distribution of risk by single and multiple pollutants, and the magnitude of the overall risk from multiple pollutants based on the current concentrations of pollutants and toxicity data. Two target criteria levels – level I (NOEC/LOEC based) and level II (LC/EC/IC₅₀ based) – were employed, and thus, the regional and sub-regional risks were evaluated according to these two levels. The risk of multiple toxic metals (As, Cd, Cr, Hg and Pb) to a terrestrial ecosystem for the region around the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea were evaluated as a case. The total overall ecological risks from heavy metals in the region for level I and level II were 21.73% and 12.53%, respectively. The risks were ranked in the order of Cr > As > Pb > Cd > Hg with Cr posing the greatest ecological risk, which was 61.12% for level I. The top three cities according to the level II ecological risk were Cangzhou > Lianyungang > Panjin, while the top three cities of level I ecological risk were Cangzhou > Panjin > Lianyungang. This method provides a quantitative risk assessment with multiple and clear protection levels for risk management.

Given that cadmium (Cd) uptake by plants is linked to transpiration rate and activity of antioxidant enzymes and further that silicon (Si) can regulate them, it was hypothesized that improved Si nutrition could reduce Cd concentration in plants. Thus, present study was carried out to elucidate the positive effect of Si nutrition on the growth, activities of antioxidant enzymes and tissue cadmium (Cd) concentration in Cd-tolerant (Iqbal-2000) and Cd-sensitive wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars. Fifteen days after seedling transplantation, 15 μM Cd stress alone and in combination with 0.6 mM Si was applied. Silicon application improved root and shoot dry matter of Cd-sensitive cultivar Sehar-2006 while the effect was non-significant in Cd-tolerant cultivar Iqbal-2000. Silicon-treated Cd-sensitive cultivar showed marked improvements in chlorophyll content and photosynthesis, while stomatal conductance and transpiration rate decreased by Si application. Silicon treatment enhanced the activities of enzymatic antioxidants including catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase and superoxide dismutase and the increase was higher for Cd-tolerant cultivar Iqbal-2000. Although Si nutrition depressed malondialdehyde (MDA) content in both Cd-stressed cultivars, the response was more evident in Cd-sensitive Sehar-2006. Lower lipid peroxidation was related to Si-induced increase in antioxidant activities only in Cd-sensitive cultivar. Silicon application decreased Cd accumulation in the roots and shoots of both the cultivars. The decrease in shoot Cd was associated with a decrease in Cd uptake by roots and Cd translocation from roots to shoots. Overall, it is concluded that Si suppressed Cd contents by decreasing transpiration rate in Cd-sensitive cultivar and by increasing antioxidant activity in Cd-tolerant cultivar.

Photodemethylation can be one of the primary processes for loss of neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in freshwater lakes. Few studies have quantified seasonal variations in photodemethylation rate constants as a function of dissolved organic matter (DOM). We conducted 1-week irradiation experiments in two seasons to test for spatial and temporal differences in photodemethylation potential in temperate lake waters. Six study lakes in Kejimkujik National Park, Nova Scotia were sampled in summer and fall to include a range of naturally occurring DOM concentrations (4.4–13.4 and 3.9–16.4 mg C L⁻¹, respectively). A negative linear relationship (R² = 0.76, p = 0.01) was found between DOM concentration and photodemethylation rate constant across seasons, indicating that DOM is a strong predictor of MeHg photodemethylation independent of seasonal effects. The two highest carbon lakes (BDW and PEB) had significantly higher energy-normalized photodemethylation rate constants in summer compared to fall corresponding with lower DOM concentrations in summer relative to fall. Additionally, there were negative linear relationships between MeHg photodemethylation and DOM photomineralization (R²s = 0.58–0.72) and DOM photobleaching (R²s = 0.83–0.90). This key finding suggests that competition for photons within DOM structures may reduce the potential for MeHg photodemethylation in high carbon waters and that this relationship persists across seasons.

We investigated the ability of the aquatic fern Azolla to take up ciprofloxacin (Cipro), as well as the effects of that antibiotic on the N-fixing process in plants grown in medium deprived (-N) or provided (+N) with nitrogen (N). Azolla was seen to accumulate Cipro at concentrations greater than 160 μg g⁻¹ dry weight when cultivated in 3.05 mg Cipro l⁻¹, indicating it as a candidate for Cipro recovery from water. Although Cipro was not seen to interfere with the heterocyst/vegetative cell ratios, the antibiotic promoted changes with carbon and nitrogen metabolism in plants. Decreased photosynthesis and nitrogenase activity, and altered plant's amino acid profile, with decreases in cell N concentrations, were observed. The removal of N from the growth medium accentuated the deleterious effects of Cipro, resulting in lower photosynthesis, N-fixation, and assimilation rates, and increased hydrogen peroxide accumulation. Our results shown that Cipro may constrain the use of Azolla as a biofertilizer species due to its interference with nitrogen fixation processes.

Adverse effect studies of gasoline exhaust are scarce, even though gasoline direct injection (GDI) vehicles can emit a high number of particles. The aim of this study was to conduct an in vitro hazard assessment of different GDI exhausts using two different cell culture models mimicking the human airway. In addition to gasoline particle filters (GPF), the effects of two lubrication oils with low and high ash content were assessed, since it is known that oils are important contributors to exhaust emissions.Complete exhausts from two gasoline driven cars (GDI1 and GDI2) were applied for 6 h (acute exposure) to a multi-cellular human lung model (16HBE14o-cell line, macrophages, and dendritic cells) and a primary human airway model (MucilAir™). GDI1 vehicle was driven unfiltered and filtered with an uncoated and a coated GPF. GDI2 vehicle was driven under four settings with different fuels: normal unleaded gasoline, 2% high and low ash oil in gasoline, and 2% high ash oil in gasoline with a GPF. GDI1 unfiltered was also used for a repeated exposure (3 times 6 h) to assess possible adverse effects. After 6 h exposure, no genes or proteins for oxidative stress or pro-inflammation were upregulated compared to the filtered air control in both cell systems, neither in GDI1 with GPFs nor in GDI2 with the different fuels. However, the repeated exposure led to a significant increase in HMOX1 and TNFa gene expression in the multi-cellular model, showing the responsiveness of the system towards gasoline engine exhaust upon prolonged exposure. The reduction of particles by GPFs is significant and no adverse effects were observed in vitro during a short-term exposure. On the other hand, more data comparing different lubrication oils and their possible adverse effects are needed. Future experiments also should, as shown here, focus on repeated exposures.

Biel-Maeso, Miriam | Corada-Fernández, Carmen | Lara-Martín, Pablo A.
The use of reclaimed wastewater for irrigation is foreseen as a possible strategy to mitigate the pressure on water resources in dry regions. However, there is the risk of potential accumulation of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in the edaphic environment, their percolation and consequently contamination of aquifers. In the present study, we measured the levels of a wide range of commonly used pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in sewage from a local wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and in soils irrigated with treated wastewater. Analysis of target compounds showed total concentrations between 73 and 372 μg L⁻¹ in WWTP influents, and from 3 to 41 μg L⁻¹ in effluents. The total concentrations of PhACs detected in surface soil samples were in the range of 2 and 15 ng g⁻¹, with predominance of analgesics and anti-inflammatories (maximum concentration = 10.05 ng g⁻¹), followed by antibiotics and psychiatric drugs (maximum concentration = 5.45 ng g⁻¹ and 3.78 ng g⁻¹, respectively). Both effluent samples and irrigated soils shared similar compositional patterns, with compounds such as hydrochlorothiazide and diclofenac being predominant. Additionally, PhACs were also detected in soil samples at a depth of 150 cm, indicating that these chemical undergo leaching associated with heavy-rain episodes. Their occurrence in soils was affected by temperature too, as maximum concentrations were measured in colder months (up to 14 ng g⁻¹), indicating higher persistence at lower temperatures. Finally, the ecotoxicological risk of PhACs in soil was evaluated by calculating their risk quotients (RQs). The risk was very low as RQ values ranged between <0.01 and 0.07. However, this initial assessment could be improved by future works on toxicity using specific terrestrial organisms.

2018
Kwon, Bum Gun | Chung, Seon-Yong | Park, Seung-Shik | Saido, Katsuhiko
The objective of this study is to investigate the qualitative contribution of internal and external factors of the area contaminated by polystyrene (PS) in coastal marine environments. This study is based on the extensive results of monitoring the styrene oligomers (SOs) present in sand and seawater samples along various coastlines of the Pacific Ocean. Here, anthropogenic SOs is derived from PS during manufacture and use, and can provide clues about the origin of SOs by PS pollution. The monitoring results showed that, if the concentration of SOs in water is higher than those concentrations in beach sand, this area could be affected by PS plastic caused by an external factor. On the other hand, if the concentration of SOs is higher in the beach sand, the region can be mainly influenced by PS plastic derived from its own area. Unlike the case of an external factor, in this case (internal influence), it is possible to take policy measures of the area itself for the PS plastic problem. Thus, this study is motivated by the need of policy measures to establish a specific alternative to the problems of PS plastic pollution in ocean environments.
