Bacterial communities of mangrove sediments are well appreciated for their role in nutrient cycling. However, spatiotemporal variability in these communities over large geographical scale remains understudied. We investigated sediment bacterial communities and their metabolic potential in an intertidal mangrove forest of India, Bhitarkanika, using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes and community-level physiological profiling. Bulk surface sediments from five different locations representing riverine and bay sites were collected over three seasons. Seasonality largely explained the variation in the structural and metabolic patterns of the sediment bacterial communities. Freshwater Actinobacteria were more abundant in monsoon, whereas γ-Proteobacteria demonstrated higher abundance in summer. Distinct differences in the bacterial community composition were noted between riverine and bay sites. For example, salt-loving marine bacteria affiliated to Oceanospirillales were more prominent in the bay sites than the riverine sites. L-asparagine, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, and D-mannitol were the preferentially utilized carbon sources by bacterial communities. Bacterial community composition was largely governed by salinity and organic carbon content of the sediments. Modeling analysis revealed that the abundance of δ-Proteobacteria increased with salinity, whereas β-Proteobacteria displayed an opposite trend. Metabolic mapping of taxonomic data predicted biogeochemical functions such as xylan and chitin degradation, ammonia oxidation, nitrite reduction, and sulfate reduction in the bacterial communities suggesting their role in carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycling in mangrove sediments. This study has provided valuable clues about spatiotemporal heterogeneity in the structural and metabolic patterns of bacterial communities and their environmental determinants in a tropical mangrove forest.

Struvite precipitation has drawn much attention in the last decade as a green chemical process for phosphorus removal and recovery. Product purity affects the usefulness, and thus price, of the product when recovered struvite is sold as fertilizer. However, there is currently little research on struvite quality, as well as on models for accurately predicting. This paper presents an alternative approach to the traditional thermodynamic model where the solid with the largest positive saturation index precipitates first, depleting the concentrations of constituent ions before the next solid can precipitate. In the new thermodynamic approach, all solids with a positive saturation index precipitate simultaneously, and deplete the common pool of available ions in tandem. It was validated against experimental data, compared with the traditional thermodynamic models and a previously developed empirical model. The proposed new approach was more accurate than other models, except when both the ammonium nitrogen and magnesium concentrations were very low, a condition not likely to be encountered in industry. Therefore, this model is more suited for predicting the performance of struvite precipitation under varying wastewater conditions.

Long-term cyanobacterial blooms and hypereutrophic state have been typical for the shallow, urban Swarzędzkie Lake for many years. Diversion of sewage did not change its trophic status, so restoration began in autumn 2011 using the sustainable approach based on three methods. The aim of the study was to analyse how sustainable restoration affects zooplankton. We hypothesised that bottom-up and top-down methods reconstructed zooplankton composition. Thus, the abundance of large-size cladocerans increased and controlled phytoplankton effectively. The elimination of cyanobacteria bloom, the decrease of rotifer abundance and the twofold increase of filter-feeder effectiveness were observed in summer 2012. However, high phosphorus concentration, lack of regular cyprinid removal and insufficient fish stocking together with high temperature prevented zooplankton from controlling cyanobacteria bloom in summer 2013. Rotifer domination with high trophy species was noted, as before restoration. The number of rotifers decreased in 2014, while crustaceans increased due to the significant decrease of nutrient concentrations and an intensification of biomanipulation treatments. Therefore, summer phytoplankton growth was low, without cyanobacteria dominance. The rebuilding of zooplankton in Swarzędzkie Lake was observed during sustainable restoration. However, the treatments should be intensified when adverse changes were observed to obtain better results for the improvement of water quality.

Membrane distillation is getting increasing attention thanks to its advantages in terms of energy consumption and final permeate quality in addition to its resistance against highly corrosive media which forms an appealing solution for industrial wastewater treatment. Despite its advantages, one of the most challenging issues in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) is membrane fouling and wetting. In the present research work, saline dairy effluent discharged from hard cheese industry was pretreated by macrofiltration (MAF) and ultrafiltration (UF) and processed by DCMD to investigate the extent of the aforementioned issues. Effluents pretreated by UF have led the best process performance with stable flux values at different operating conditions. Fouling has occurred in all the experiments, though their effect on the flux behavior and membrane wetting was different from one feed to the other. Changing the flow rate and the temperature difference have affected slightly the membrane wettability for all feed qualities. In all experiments, the permeate has maintained a good quality with low electrical conductivity that did not exceed 70 μS/cm and low total organic carbon < 2 mg/L.

Despite the risks associated with phthalate exposure, there are few studies emphasizing preschool children’s exposure to phthalates in residences in Northwest China. In this study, seven phthalates from indoor dust samples were measured in 50 residences in Shihezi, China. Preschool children’s exposure doses via non-dietary intake were calculated by Monte Carlo simulation. Risk assessment was conducted by comparing the simulated exposure dose with benchmarks for reproductive toxicity and cancer specified in Proposition 65 of California. The detection frequencies for all selected phthalates were more than 75%, with the exception of benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) and di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP). Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was the most principal compound in the dust samples (median = 455 μg/g and 462 μg/g in the bedroom and living room, respectively). The simulation displayed that the median DBP daily intake was 1.5–1.9 μg/day/kg for preschool children in Shihezi, which was considered a high level compared with similar studies around the world. The risk assessment indicated that almost all preschool children face potential reproductive risk due to dibutyl phthalate (DBP) exposure, with medians of hazard index (HI) from 9.6 to 12.4 for all age groups. Therefore, from a children’s health perspective, attention should be paid to reducing indoor phthalate pollution and exposure in this area.

Unbalanced fertilization lacking nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), or potassium (K) is a worldwide phenomenon; however, whether they affect bacterial community composition and intraspecific interactions in a similar pattern and how they affect bacterial activity are not systematically compared. Soils under different kinds of unbalanced fertilization in a 21-year field experiment were collected to investigate the variation in dehydrogenase activity (DHA), bacterial community diversity, structure, composition, and possible interactions. Compared to the balanced fertilization of NPK, the DHA from unbalanced fertilization of NP, PK, and NK was 8.70, 11.59, and 14.17% lower, respectively, and from the unfertilized treatment (Nil) was 13.41% lower; however, the Shannon index from NP, PK, and Nil was 4.48–7.21% higher and from NK was 3.95% lower. Based on principal coordinate analyses (PCoA), bacterial community structure was separated by N application or not along PCo1 and was further separated by P application or not along PCo2, indicating a more influence by N deficiency. Moreover, the structure was mainly determined by soil pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), and total phosphorus (TP). The network complexity using co-occurrence analysis followed the order NP > NPK > PK > NK > Nil, indicating a more influence by P deficiency on intraspecific interactions. Structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that the reduced DHA in NP was mainly regulated by the decreased SOC and increased Shannon index, in PK by the decreased SOC and increased Shannon index and pH, and in NK by the decreased SOC and TP and increased PCo2. The significantly lower abundance of Bacteroidetes and Chitinophagaceae in NK may also contribute to the reduced DHA. Our results imply that N deficiency had the greatest impact on bacterial community structure and composition, P deficiency had the greatest impact on network construction and bacterial activity, and K deficiency has minimal effect. Our results also suggest that main factors regulating the variation in soil functions may vary among different nutrient deficiencies.

The photocatalytic oxidation of urea on TiO₂ in water was compared with that in urine. Despite the presence of other organic compounds in urine, the oxidation efficiency of urea on TiO₂ in urine was higher than that in water. This enhanced oxidation of urea in urine is ascribed to the higher production of •OH (primary oxidant for urea degradation) by the adsorption of PO₄³⁻ (one constituent of urine) on the TiO₂ surface. Among the various anions in urine, only PO₄³⁻ was adsorbed on the surface of TiO₂. Both the production of •OH and the oxidation of urea were enhanced in the presence of PO₄³⁻. These results indicate that the enhanced •OH production by in situ surface phosphorylation is the reason for the increased oxidation of urea in urine. Surface platinization of TiO₂ enhanced the oxidation of urea in water. However, the oxidation efficiency of urea on Pt/TiO₂ in urine was lower than that in water. This behavior is due to the adsorption of PO₄³⁻ and SO₄²⁻ in urine on Pt deposits, which inhibits the adsorption of oxygen and the interfacial electron transfer to oxygen. The product distribution (i.e., the molar ratio of NO₃⁻ to NH₄⁺) in water was different from that in urine because the negatively charged surface of TiO₂ in urine attracts the positively charged area of carbamic acid (intermediate) and encourages its decomposition into NH₄⁺ and not into NO₃⁻.

Biological and behavioral responses of the tropical earthworm Perionyx excavatus towards different concentrations of abamectin were evaluated. Abamectin significantly reduced the biomass and reproduction (cocoon production) of P. excavatus as well as inducing histopathological alterations in the cuticle. Biomass loss was recorded in P. excavatus exposed to abamectin at a concentration as low as 0.1 mg active ingredient (a.i.) kg⁻¹, while atrophy, another physiological response, was observed at an abamectin concentration of 0.21 μg cm⁻² in a filter paper test. Cocoon production was significantly reduced in the presence of abamectin, and no cocoons were produced at doses of 20 mg a.i. kg⁻¹ or higher, while abamectin at 50 mg a.i. kg⁻¹ induced extreme pathology, characterized by the loss of the integrity of the whole body wall and intestine of P. excavatus. Histopathological alterations can be used as a biomarker to evaluate the toxicological impact of exposure to abamectin.

Ultrasound-assisted regeneration of powdered activated carbon (PAC) saturated with 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) was investigated in this work. The variables, i.e., acoustic frequency, density levels, regenerating solution species, spent PAC mass, and the number of repeated cycle, were optimized. The UV–Vis spectra, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and pore structure analysis were used to characterize the regenerated PAC as compared to the virgin and spent PAC. The adsorption experiments indicated that the adsorption kinetics of 4-CP fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model, and the main chemisorption process was nonlinear and heterogeneous. The desorption results showed that the optimized regenerated conditions were identified as 40 kHz of frequency, 0.18 W/mL of sonication intensity, 0.1 M NaOH and 50% (v/v) ethyl alcohol mixture of regeneration solution, and 1 g/L of saturated PAC mass. Under this condition, the regeneration efficiency reached up to 86.81%. Hydroxylated oxidation products especially benzoquinone and hydroquinone were formed during ultrasound regeneration. Ultrasound mainly acted on surface functionalities, mesopores, and macropores of PAC through the hydroxyl radical oxidization resulted from the cavitation effect.

Vegetation is an important factor affecting nutrient enrichment ratio in runoff sediments but few studies have been examined in the effects of different vegetation scenarios on the monthly evolutions of particulate nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loss. In this study, a vegetation correction coefficient was innovatively embedded in a dynamic particulate nutrient loss model to evaluate the monthly trends of particulate N and P loss in a small highly erodible watershed. Results indicate that (i) the monthly sediment yield from June to August 2013 accounted for the dominant percentage in this extreme hydrological year, which was consistent with the monthly trends of rainfall erosivity. The largest monthly sediment yield rate under four different vegetation scenarios all occurred in July with the values of 530.56, 258.09, 579.69, and 370.74 t km⁻². (ii) Particulate N and P loss from April to September changed significantly under different vegetation scenarios, and they were mainly concentrated in June and July 2013; only the N and P loss loads in July accounted for > 70% of annual load. However, the loads in January, February, March, October, November, and December were considered as zero because there was no erosive rainfall during the above 6 months. (iii) The reduction efficiency of particulate N and P loss by scenario 1 was about 1.7 times higher than scenario 3, which shows that forestland in sediment reduction was stronger than grassland and cropland in Zhifanggou Watershed. Results provide the underlying insights needed to guide vegetation reconstruction and soil conservation planning in loess hilly regions.
