[Departement_IRSTEA]Ecotechnologies [TR1_IRSTEA]TED | International audience | French vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCW) treating raw wastewater have been developed successfully over the last 30 years. The highly aerobic treatment observed on these two-stages of filter allows an almost complete nitrification and accepts high hydraulic loads with seasonal variations. Nevertheless, the French two-stage VFCWs need a total filtration area of 2-2.5 m2/PE and the use of sand on the second stage. Furthermore, it is not always economically competitive and their high removal efficiencies are not systematically needed. In this context, implementing a one-stage system allowing reaching standard requirements is of interest. One of the solutions developed in France is to use a vertical flow system with an unsaturated layer at the top and a saturated layer at the bottom. It is proposed by Epur Nature as Biho-Filter®. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of this new configuration, in order to optimize the design and operating conditions (bottom saturation layer depth, recirculation rate, etc.). The study consisted in hydraulic and removal assessment of 3 different Biho-Filter® plants. It presents the results regarding outflow concentrations that can be achieved (15 mg.L -1 in TSS, 70 mg.L -1 in COD, 15 mg.L -1 in BOD5, 25 mg.L -1 in TKN and 70% in TN removal) as well as the impact of the operation conditions on treatment performances and the limits of the systems.

[Departement_IRSTEA]Ecotechnologies [TR1_IRSTEA]TED | International audience | After 30 years of development of constructed wetlands (CWs) treating raw domestic wastewater for small communities (< 5,000 people equivalent, pe) in France, about 3,500 plants are currently in operation. If most of them are composed of two vertical stages in series, many configurations exist (association with horizontal flow or pond systems, vertical flow with recirculation, partially saturated systems, etc.). A previous database analysis was carried out 10 years ago on the classical French system allowing the global performances to be observed. Nowadays, the database improvement, thanks to Irstea and the monitoring of the French technical department on full-scale two vertical stages (VFCW), allows improving our understanding and having a greater perspective on the treatment performances of these configurations fed with raw wastewater. Typical concentrations at the second stage outlet are 74mgCOD.L -1 , 17 mgTSS.L -1 and 11 mgTKN.L -1. This paper presents: -A description of existing VFCW based on the study of 415 plants;-An investigation of pollutant removal performances in relation to the loads applied for the first treatment stage.

A fine time-scale sampling enabled to illustrate that interactions between pesticides and forest buffer substrates (soil and organic-rich litter layer), had a retarding effect on molecule transfer. Low concentrations were observed for all pesticides at the forest buffer outlet thus demonstrating the efficiency of "Wet" forest buffer zone for pesticide dissipation. Pesticide masses injected in the forest buffer inlet directly determined concentration peaks observed at the outlet. Rapid and partially reversible adsorption was likely the major process affecting pesticide transfer for short retention times (a few hours to a few days). Remobilization of metazachlor, isoproturon, desmethylisoproturon, and AMPA was observed when non-contaminated water flows passed through the forest buffer. Our data suggest that pesticide sorption properties alone could not explain the complex reaction mechanisms that affected pesticide transfer in the forest buffer. Nevertheless, the thick layer of organic matter litter on the top of the forest soil was a key parameter, which enhanced partially reversible sorption of pesticide, thus retarded their transfer, decreased concentration peaks, and likely increased degradation of the pesticides. Consequently, to limit pesticide pollution transported by surface water, the use of already existing forest areas as buffer zones should be equally considered as the most commonly implemented grass buffer strips.

International audience | The efficacy of a wastewater treatment lagoon (WWTL) at preventing the spread of Pseudomonas aeruginosa into natural aquatic habitats was investigated. A WWTL and its connected combined sewer and brook were exhaustively sampled. Physico-chemical analyses showed a stratification of the first pond according to pH, temperature and oxygen content. The P. aeruginosa counts partially matched this stratification with higher values among the bottom anaerobic waters of the first half of this pond. Genotyping of 494 WWTL P. aeruginosa strains was performed and led to the definition of 85 lineages. Dominant lineages were observed, with some being found all over the WWTL including the connected brook. IS5 was used as an indicator of genomic changes, and 1 to 12 elements were detected among 16 % of the strains. IS-driven lasR (genetic regulator) disruptions were detected among nine strains that were not part of the dominant lineages. These insertional mutants did not show significant elastase activities but showed better growth than the PAO1 reference strain in WWTL waters. Differences in growth patterns were related to a better survival of these mutants at an alkaline pH and a better ability at using some C-sources such as alanine. The opportunistic colonization of a WWTL by P. aeruginosa can involve several metabolic strategies which appeared lineage specific. Some clones appeared more successful than others at disseminating from a combined sewer toward the overflow of a WWTL.

Topsoil samples were collected in all field plots and potted in the laboratory. Total PTTE concentrations were determined in soil pore water (SPW) collected by Rhizon soil moisture samplers. Soil exposure intensity was assessed by Chelex100-DGT (diffusive gradient in thin films) probes. The PTTE phytoavailability was characterized by growing dwarf beans on potted soils and analyzing their foliar PTTE concentrations. OM and DL, singly and in combination (OMDL), were effective to decrease foliar Cu, Cr, Zn, and As concentrations of beans, the lowest values being numerically for the OM plants. The soil treatments did not reduce the Cu and Zn mineral masses of the bean primary leaves, but those of Cr and As decreased for the OM and DL plants. The Cu concentration in SPW was increased in the OM soil and remained unchanged in the DL and OMDL soils. The available Cu measured by DGT used to assess the soil exposure intensity correlated with the foliar Cu concentration. The Zn concentrations in SPW were reduced in the DL soil. All amendments increased As in the SPW. Based on DGT data, Cu availability was reduced in both OM and OMDL soils, while DL was the most effective to decrease soil Zn availability.

International audience | Sediment management from stormwater infiltration basins represents a real environmental and economic issue for stakeholders due to the pollution load and important tonnages of these by-products. To reduce the sediment volumes to treat, organic and metal micropollutant-bearing phases should be identified. A combination of density fractionation procedure and microanalysis techniques was used to evaluate the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) within variable density fractions for three urban stormwater basin sediments. The results confirm that PAHs are found in the lightest fractions (d < 1.9, 1.9 < d < 2.3 g cm(-3)) whereas trace metals are equally distributed within the light, intermediary, and highest fractions (d < 1.9, 1.9 < d < 2.3, 2.3 < d < 2.6, and d > 2.8 g cm(-3)) and are mostly in the 2.3 < d < 2.6 g cm(-3) fraction. The characterization of the five fractions by global analyses and microanalysis techniques (XRD and MEB-EDX) allowed us to identify pollutant-bearing phases. PAHs are bound to the organic matter (OM) and trace metals to OM, clays, carbonates and dense particles. Moreover, the microanalysis study underlines that OM is the main constituent responsible for the aggregation, particularly for microaggregation. In terms of sediment management, it was shown that density fractionation is not suitable for trace metals but could be adapted to separate PAH-enriched phases.

International audience | Diffuse phytosanitary pollution is a complex phenomenon to manage. Reducing this type of pollution is one of today’s key socio-economic and environmental challenges. At the regional level, few approaches enable the actors concerned to implement agricultural management strategies to reduce the use and impact of phytosanitary products. Our research problem focused on the consequences of intensive agriculture and, in particular, how to evaluate the impact of phytosanitary products on human health and the environment. In this article, we present the SimPhy simulation game which places the actors from a given region directly into a situation in which they manage farms whilst under pressure to reduce phytosanitaries (quantity and toxicity). The application focused on the Merja Zerga catchment area in Morocco. The region is dominated by intensive agriculture which is located upstream from a Ramsar-classified wetland area. The SimPhy simulation game is based on a decision support system-type tool. It allows us to anticipate the impact of regulations on farming systems. It also enables us to analyse the consequences of the actors’ strategies on farm economies, human health and the quality of ecosystems. Initial results from the SimPhy simulation game enabled the technicians from Agricultural Development Center (CDA) themselves to learn about managing agricultural production systems in a dynamic and interactive fashion. With the simulation game, it was possible to learn about the farmer's ability to adapt to new regulatory constraints, and the involved consequences for toxicity risks for human health and the environment.

International audience | New Caledonia is one of the main hot spots of biodiversity on the planet. Large amounts of contaminants are discharged into the lagoon as a result of increasing anthropogenic activities such as intense mining, urbanization and industrialization. Concentrations of 14 trace elements and 26 persistent organic pollutants (POPs: PCBs and pesticides) were measured in the muscles of two anguilliform fish species, over a coast to barrier reef gradient in two lagoon areas differently exposed to anthropic disturbances. This study emphasizes the high trace element contamination status of anguilliform fish and also highlights slight but perceptible organic pollution. The contamination extends throughout the lagoon, from coast to barrier reef, even in areas remote from emission points. High levels of trace elements, especially those linked to mining activities (i.e. Co, Cr, Fe, Mn and Ni), were detected in coastal sites. Furthermore the large dispersion of most POPs throughout the entire lagoon poses the question of their potential toxicity on marine organisms from numerous habitats. Our results underline the need for long term monitoring of various contaminants over large spatial and time scales.

New Caledonia is one of the main hot spots of biodiversity on the planet. Large amounts of contaminants are discharged into the lagoon as a result of increasing anthropogenic activities such as intense mining, urbanization, and industrialization. Concentrations of 14 trace elements and 26 persistent organic pollutants (POPs: PCBs and pesticides) were measured in the muscles of two anguilliform fish species, over a coast to barrier reef gradient in two lagoon areas differently exposed to anthropic disturbances. This study emphasizes the high trace element contamination status of anguilliform fish and also highlights slight but perceptible organic pollution. The contamination extends throughout the lagoon, from coast to barrier reef, even in areas remote from emission points. High levels of trace elements, especially those linked to mining activities (i.e., Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, and Ni), were detected in coastal sites. Furthermore, the large dispersion of most POPs throughout the entire lagoon poses the question of their potential toxicity on marine organisms from numerous habitats. Our results underline the need for long-term monitoring of various contaminants over large spatial and time scales.

In the Mezquital valley, untreated wastewater (45 m(3) s(-1)) from Mexico City is used for the irrigation of around 900 km(2) of agricultural soil. High concentrations of metals including methylmercury (3.8+/-2.5 ng l(-1)) and lead (0.16+/-0.05 mg l(-1)) were measured in anoxic wastewater canals. Downstream, dissolved, and particulate polymetallic (Hg, Pb, Cr.) concentrations decreased by factors 10 to 1,000 in the Tula River (which received a mix of fresh and wastewater) due to the dilution and oxidation of surface water, and to the decrease of contaminants concentration in wastewater downstream irrigated soils. However, dissolved and particulate methylmercury concentrations (0.06 to 0.33 ng l(-1) and 1.6 to 4.5 g kg(-1), respectively) remained elevated in comparison to other natural hydrosystems. The monitoring of an irrigation event and the distribution of metals in a soil profile irrigated for more than 80 years showed that metals were retained in the draining tilled layer. The oxic conditions and slightly acidic pH (similar to 6.5) in this layer were found favorable for metal adsorption and co-precipitation with redox-sensitive elements (Fe, Mn) and suggestively for mercury demethylation. In the downstream Tula River and groundwater, almost all metallic concentrations remained below guideline thresholds. Only, dissolved As and Pb concentrations remained two to five times above thresholds for drinking water, highlighting a potential health risk for approximately 500,000 people who use groundwater as water supply.

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]BELCA [TR2_IRSTEA]TED | Five estrogenic hormones (unconjugated+conjugated fractions) and 10 beta blockers were analyzed in three wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents and receiving river waters in the area of Lyon, France. In the different samples, only two estrogens were quantified: estrone and estriol. Some beta blockers, such as atenolol, acebutolol, and sotalol, were almost always quantified, but others, e.g., betaxolol, nadolol, and oxprenolol were rarely quantified. Concentrations measured in river waters were in the nanogram per liter range for estrogens and between 0.3 and 210 ng/L for beta blockers depending on the substance and the distance from theWWTP outfall. The impact of the WWTP on the receiving rivers was studied and showed a clear increase in concentrations near the WWTP outfall. For estrogens, the persistence in surface waters was not evaluated given the low concentrations levels (around 1 ng/L). For beta blockers, concentrations measured downstream of the WWTP outfall were up to 16 times higher than those measured upstream. Also, the persistence of metoprolol, nadolol, and propranolol was noted even 2 km downstream of the WWTP outfall. The comparison of beta blocker fingerprints in the samples collected in effluent and in the river also showed the impact of WWTP outfall on surface waters. Finally, a tentative environmental risk evaluation was performed on 15 sites by calculating the ratio of receiving water concentrations to predicted non-effect concentrations (PNEC). For estrogens, a total PNEC of 5 ng/L was considered and these substances were not linked to any potential environmental risk (only one site showed an environmental risk ratio above 1). Unfortunately, few PNECs are available and risk evaluation was only possible for 4 of the 10 beta blockers studied: acebutolol, atenolol, metoprolol, and propranolol. Only propranolol presented a ratio near or above 1, showing a possible environmental risk for 4 receiving waters out of 15.
