As emerging pollutants, microplastics (MPs) have been found globally in various freshwater and marine matrices. This study recompiled 270 endpoints of 3765 individuals from 43 publications, reporting the onset of enhanced biological performance and reduced oxidative stress biomarkers induced by MPs in aquatic organisms at environmentally relevant concentrations (≤1 mg/L, median = 0.1 mg/L). The stimulatory responses of consumption, growth, reproduction and survival ranged from 131% to 144% of the control, with a combined response of 136%. The overall inhibitory response of 9 oxidative stress biomarkers was 71% of the control, and commonly below 75%. The random-effects meta-regression indicated that the extents of MPs-induced responses were independent of habitat, MP composition, morphology, particle size and exposure duration. The results implied that the exposure to MPs at low and high concentrations might induce opposite/non-monotonic responses in aquatic biota. Correspondingly, the hormetic dose response relationships were found at various endpoints, such as reproduction, genotoxicity, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity and behavioral alteration. Hormesis offers a novel perspective for understanding the dose response mode of aquatic organisms exposed to low and high concentrations of MPs, highlighting the necessity to incorporate the hormetic dose response model into the ecological/environmental risk assessment of MPs.

Frequent and intense storm disturbances can have widespread and strong effects on the nitrogen and iron cycles and their associated microbial communities in estuary systems. A three-year investigation was conducted in the Pearl River and Zhanjiang estuaries in Guangdong Province, China through repeated sampling at three timepoints, defined as pre-storm (<1 month before storm), post-storm (<1 month after storm), and non-storm (6–8 months after storm). Increased nutrient concentrations (total organic carbon, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and sulfate) in both the sediment and water column were observed immediately after storm. The microbial community experienced extensive and immediate changes determined by an observed composition shift in the nitrogen and iron-cycling microbiomes. Analysis of sediment samples displayed a shift from nitrogen-to sulfur-cycling microorganisms and an increase in microbial interactions that were not observed in the water column. The chemical profile and microbial community components both returned to baseline conditions 6–8 months following storm disturbance. Finally, significant correlations were found between chemical and microbial data, suggesting that niche-sharing microbes may respond similarly to stimuli that impact their ecosystem. Increases in nutrient availability can favor the abundance of specific taxa, as demonstrated by an increase in Acidimicrobium that affect both nitrogen and iron cycling.

Pollutants discharged from wastewater are the main cause of the spread of antibiotic resistance in river biofilms. There is controversy regarding the primary contribution of environmental selectors such as antibiotics and heavy metals to the development of antibiotic resistance in bacterial communities. Here, this study compared the effect of environmental safety concentration Cu²⁺ and enrofloxacin (ENR) on the evolution of antibiotic resistance by examining phenotypic characteristics and genotypic profiles of bacterial communities in a river biofilm, and then distinguished the major determinants from a comprehensive perspective. The pollution induced community tolerance in ENR-treated group was significantly higher than that in Cu²⁺-treated group (at concentration levels of 100 and 1000 μg/L). Metagenomic sequencing results showed that ENR significantly increased the number and total abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), but there was no significant change in the Cu²⁺- treated group. Compared with Cu²⁺, ENR was the major selective agent in driving the change of taxonomic composition because the taxonomic composition in ENR was the most different from the original biofilm. Comparing and analyzing the prokaryotic composition, the phylum of Proteobacteria was enriched in both ENR and Cu²⁺ treated groups. Among them, Acidovorax and Bosea showed resistance to both pollutants. Linking taxonomic composition to ARGs revealed that the main potential hosts of fluoroquinolone resistance genes were Comamonas, Sphingopyxis, Bradyrhizobium, Afipia, Rhodopseudomonas, Luteimonas and Hoeflea. The co-occurrence of ARGs and metal resistance genes (MRGs) showed that the multidrug efflux pump was the key mechanism connecting MRGs and ARGs. Network analysis also revealed that the reason of Cu²⁺ selected for fluoroquinolones resistant bacterial communities was the coexistence of multidrug efflux gene and MRGs. Our research emphasizes the importance of antibiotics in promoting the development of antibiotic resistant bacterial communities from the perspective of changes in community structure and resistome in river biofilms.

Children in urban environments are exposed to potential harmful elements (PHEs) through variable exposure media. Playing activities in outdoor playgrounds have been considered of high concern due to children's exposure to sand-bound PHEs through unintentional or intentional sand ingestion. Furthermore, the affinity of magnetic particles with dust-bound PHEs in playgrounds has been reported. In this study, playground sands (PG sands) from public playgrounds in the city of Thessaloniki, N. Greece were sampled and the levels, the contamination degree, oral bioaccessibility and exposure assessment of PHEs were evaluated. In addition, low-cost and fast magnetic measurements (i.e. mass specific magnetic susceptibility, χₗf) were explored as potential pollution and health risk proxies. Mineralogically, siliceous PG sands dominated, while morphologically angular magnetic particles and Fe-rich “spherules” of anthropogenic origin were revealed and verified by enhanced χₗf values. The average total elemental contents exhibited a descending order of Mn > Ba > Cr > Zn > Ni > Pb > Cu > Co > As > Sn > Bi > Cd, however only Cd, Bi, Pb, Cr, As and Zn were presented anthropogenically enhanced. Notable increase on PHEs levels and finer sand fractions were observed with continuous sand use. Anthropogenically derived elements (i.e. Cd and Pb with high Igₑₒ values) exhibited higher bioaccessible fractions in PG sands and considered easily soluble in gastric fluids through ingestion. However, increased risks were found for specific PHEs (especially Pb) only in a worst case exposure scenario of an intentional sand ingestion (pica disorder). Statistical analysis results revealed a linkage of anthropogenic components with sand-bound magnetic particles. Moreover, the recorded high affinity of Pb contents (in an enhanced magnetized sub-set of PG sands) and bioaccessible Cd fractions with χₗf provide a preliminary indication on the successful applicability of low-cost and fast magnetic measurements in high impacted playground environments.

The deposition of light absorbing impurities (LAIs) (e.g., black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC), mineral dust (MD)) on snow is an important attribution to accelerate snowmelt across the northern Xinjiang, China. At present, there is still a lack of understanding of the LAIs concentration, elution and enrichment process in snow cover over Xinjiang. Based on these, continuously sampling during two years carried out to investigate the concentrations, impacts and potential sources of LAIs in snow at Kuwei Station in the southern Altai Mountains. The average concentrations of BC, OC and MD in the surface snow were 2787 ± 2334 ng g⁻¹, 6130 ± 6127 ng g⁻¹, and 70.03 ± 62.59 μg g⁻¹, respectively, which dramatically increased along with snowmelt intensified, reflecting a significant enrichment process of LAIs at the snow surface. Besides, high LAIs concentrations also found in the subsurface and melting layers of the snowpit, reflecting the elution and redistribution of LAIs. With the simulation of the SNow ICe Aerosol Radiative model, BC was the main dominant factor in reducing snow albedo and radiative forcing (RF), its impact was more remarkable in the snowmelt period. The average contribution rates of BC, MD and BC + MD to snow albedo reduction increased by 20.0 ± 1.9%, 13.0 ± 0.2%, and 20.5 ± 2.3% in spring compared with that in winter; meanwhile, the corresponding average RFs increased by 15.8 ± 3.4 W m⁻², 4.7 ± 0.3 W m⁻² and 16.4 ± 3.2 W m⁻², respectively. Changes in the number of snowmelt days caused by BC and MD decreased by 3.0 ± 0.4 d to 8.3 ± 1.3 d. It indicated that surface enrichment of LAIs during snow melting might accelerate snowmelt further. Weather Research and Forecasting Chemistry model showed that the resident emission was the main potential source of BC and OC in snow. This implied that the mitigation of intensive snowmelt needs to mainly reduce resident emission of LAIs in the future.

Strobilurins are popular fungicides used in agriculture on a global scale. Due to their widespread use as agrochemicals, they can enter aquatic environments at concentrations that can elicit adverse effects in organisms. This review synthesizes the current state of knowledge regarding the toxic effects of strobilurin fungicides on aquatic species, including algal species, Daphnia magna, and fish species, to determine risk to aquatic organisms and ecosystems. Data show that the toxicities of strobilurins vary widely across aquatic species. Strobilurins bind cytochrome bc1 in mitochondrial complex III in fungi, and as such, research in aquatic species has focused on mitochondria-related endpoints following exposures to strobilurins. In fish, studies into the activities of mitochondrial complexes and the expression of genes involved in the electron transfer chain have been conducted, converging on the theme that mitochondrial complexes and their enzymes are impaired by strobilurins. In general, the order of toxicity of strobilurins for fish species are pyraoxystrobin > pyraclostrobin ≈ trifloxystrobin > picoxystrobin > kresoxim-methyl > fluoxastrobin > azoxystrobin. In addition to mitochondrial toxicity, studies also report genotoxicity, immunotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and endocrine disruption, and each of these events can potentially impact whole organism-level processes such as development, reproduction, and behavior. Screening data from the US Environmental Protection Agency ToxCast database supports the hypothesis that these fungicides may act as endocrine disruptors, and high throughput data suggest estrogen receptor alpha and thyroid hormone receptor beta can be activated by some strobilurins. It is recommended that studies investigate the potential for endocrine disruption by strobilurins more thoroughly in aquatic species. Based on molecular, physiological, and developmental outcomes, a proposed adverse outcome pathway is presented with complex III inhibition in the electron transfer chain as a molecular initiating event. This review comprehensively addresses sub-lethal toxicity mechanisms of strobilurin fungicides, important as the detection of strobilurins in aquatic environments suggests exposure risks in wildlife.

Noble metal–based nanomaterials (NMNs), such as platinum nanoparticles (Pt@NPs) and palladium nanoparticles (Pd@NPs), are increasingly being used as antibacterial agents. However, little information is available on bacterial resistance to NMNs. In this study, owing to their oxidase-like and peroxidase-like properties, both Pt@NPs and Pd@NPs induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and manifest antibacterial activities: 6.25 μg/mL of either Pt@NPs or Pd@NPs killed >50% of Staphylococcus aureus strain ATCC29213. However, Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PAO1 completely resisted 12.5 μg/mL of Pt@NPs and 6.25 μg/mL of Pd@NPs. Compared to the non-NMN groups, these NMNs promoted 2–3-fold upregulation of the quorum sensing (QS) gene lasR in strain PAO1. In fact, the lasR gene upregulation induced a 1.5-fold reduction in ROS production and increased biofilm formation by 11% (Pt@NPs) and 27% (Pd@NPs) in strain PAO1. The ΔlasR mutants (lasR gene knock out in strain PAO1), became sensitive to NMNs. The survival rates of ΔlasR mutants at 12.5 μg/mL Pt@NPs and Pd@NPs treatments were only 77% and 58%, respectively. This is the first report indicating that bacteria can resist NMNs through QS. Based on these results, evaluation of the ecological risks of using NMNs as antibacterial agents is necessary.

Atmospheric warming and increasing tropospheric ozone (O₃) concentrations often co-occur in many cities of the world including China, adversely affecting the health status of urban trees. However, little information is known about the combined and interactive effects from increased air temperature (IT) and elevated O₃ (EO) exposures on urban tree species. Here, Ginkgo biloba and Populus alba ‘Berolinensis’ seedlings were subjected to IT (+2 °C of ambient air temperature) and/or EO (+2-fold ambient air O₃ concentrations) for one growing season by using open-top chambers. IT alone had no significant effect on physiological metabolisms at the early growing stage, but significantly increased photosynthetic parameters, antioxidative enzyme activities (P < 0.05). EO alone decreased physiological parameters except for increased oxidative stress. Compared to EO exposure alone, plants grown under IT and EO combined showed higher antioxidative and photosynthetic activity. There was a significant interactive effect between IT and EO on net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry, the actual quantum efficiency of PSII, enzyme activities, aboveground biomass and root/shoot ratio (P < 0.05), respectively. These results suggested that during one growing season, IT mitigated the adverse effect of EO on the tested plants. In addition, we found that G. biloba was more sensitive than P. alba ‘Berolinensis’ to both IT and EO, suggesting that G. biloba may be a good indicator species for climate warming and air pollution, particularly under environmental conditions as they co-occur in urban areas.

The bioaerosols present in indoor air play a major role in the transmission of infectious diseases to humans, therefore concern about their exposure is increased recently. In this regard, the present investigation described the preparation of lemongrass essential oil (LGEO) loaded chitosan and cellulose nanofibers composites (CH/CNF) for controlling the indoor air bioaerosol. The evaluation of the inhibitory effect of the composite system on culturable bacteria of the indoor air was done at different sites (air volume from 30 m³ to 80 m³) and in different size fractions of aerosol (<0.25 μm–2.5 μm). The composite system had high encapsulation efficiency (88–91%) and citrals content. A significant reduction in culturable bacteria of aerosol (from 6.23 log CFUm⁻³ to 2.33 log CFUm⁻³) was observed in presence of cellulose nanofibers and chitosan composites. The bacterial strains such as Staphylococcus sp., Bacillus cereus, Bacillus pseudomycoides sp., Pseudomonas otitidis, and Pseudomonas sp. Cf0-3 in bioaerosols were inhibited dominantly due to the diffusion of aroma molecules in indoor air. The results indicate that the interaction of diffused aroma molecule from the composite system with bacterial strains enhanced the production of ROS, resulting in loss of membrane integrity of bacterial cells. Among different size fractions of aerosol, the composite system was more effective in finer size fractions (<0.25 μm) of aerosol due to the interaction of smaller aroma compounds with bacterial cells. The study revealed that LGEO loaded chitosan and cellulose nanofibers composites could be a good option for controlling the culturable bacteria even in small-sized respirable bioaerosol.

Lead poisoning of wild birds by ingestion of lead ammunition occurs worldwide. Histopathological changes in organs of lead-intoxicated birds are widely known, and lead concentration of each organ is measurable using mass spectrometry. However, detailed lead localization at the suborgan level has remained elusive in lead-exposed birds. Here we investigated the detailed lead localization in organs of experimentally lead-exposed ducks and kites by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). In both the ducks and kites, lead accumulated diffusely in the liver, renal cortex, and brain. Lead accumulation was restricted to the red pulp in the spleen. With regard to species differences in lead distribution patterns, it is noteworthy that intensive lead accumulation was observed in the arterial walls only in the kites. In addition, the distribution of copper in the brain was altered in the lead-exposed ducks. Thus, the present study shows suborgan lead distribution in lead-exposed birds and its differences between avian species for the first time. These findings will provide fundamental information to understand the cellular processes of lead poisoning and the mechanisms of species differences in susceptibility to lead exposure.
