For human health and safety, it is of great importance to develop innovative materials with a vast capacity for powerful removal of radioactive ions from aqueous solutions. Prussian blue functionalized sugarcane bagasse (PB-SCB) was successfully prepared for the efficient elimination of radioactive cesium (¹³⁷Cs) using a nontoxic, environmentally friendly, and costless method. The prepared renewable material was characterized using different techniques to emphasize morphology, functional groups, crystal structure, and the adsorption process. The adsorption of Cs(I) was better fitted to the pseudo-second-order model than pseudo-first-order model which revealed a chemical adsorption mechanism. The experimental isotherm results were best illustrated by the Freundlich model (R² = 0.98). Besides, the obtained values for the thermodynamic parameters indicating that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous in nature. In addition to demonstrating high adsorption capacity for Cs ion removal (56.7 mg/g at 30 °C), PB-SCB might consider being an efficient and cost-effective adsorbent for the decontamination of cesium, where an estimated cost analysis revealed that the expenditure for the removal of 1000 mg/L cesium from alkaline radioactive wastewater is likely to be US$0.12. In this study, wastewater from municipal services, such as a port wastewater reception facility (PRF-WW) and a municipal solid waste plant (MSWP), was tested for the presence of the suspected endocrine-disrupting compounds phthalates (PAEs) and bisphenol A (BPA). PAEs and BPA were found in this study in high concentrations in raw wastewater obtained from passenger ships (RMT-WWs) (up to 738 μg/L and 957 μg/L, respectively) collected in the Port of Gdynia and in landfill leachates (LLs) (up to 536 μg/L and up to 2202 μg/L, respectively) from a MSWP located near Gdynia. In particular, the presence of reprotoxic di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP, up to 536 μg/L in LLs and up to 738 μg/L in RMT-WWs) requires further action because if this compound, as well as other PAEs and BPA, is not degraded by activated sludge microorganisms, it may reach receiving waters and adversely impact aquatic organisms. Therefore, PAEs and BPA should be removed either during the onsite pretreatment of tested industrial wastewater or during tertiary treatment at municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs, representing end-of-pipe technology). The addition of biochar has been reported as a strategy for improving soil fertility, crop productivity, and carbon sequestration. However, information regarding the effects of biochar on the carbon cycle in paddy fields under water-saving irrigation remains limited. Thus, a field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of biochar addition on the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO₂ and soil organic carbon (SOC) content of paddy fields under water-saving irrigation in the Taihu Lake region of China. Four treatments were applied: controlled irrigation (CI) without biochar addition as the control (CA), CI with biochar addition at a rate of 20 t·ha⁻¹ (CB), CI with biochar addition at a rate of 40 t·ha⁻¹ (CC), and flooding irrigation (FI) with biochar addition at a rate of 40 t·ha⁻¹ (FC). Biochar addition increased rice yield and irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) by 24.0–36.3 and 33.4–42.5%, respectively, compared with the control. In addition, biochar addition increased the NEE of CI paddy fields. The average NEE of paddy fields under CB and CC was 2.41 and 30.6% higher than that under CA, respectively. Thus, the increasing effect of biochar addition at a rate of 40 t·ha⁻¹ was considerably better than those of the other treatments. Apart from biochar addition, irrigation mode was also identified as an influencing factor. CI management increased the NEE of paddy fields by 17.6% compared with FI management. Compared with CA, CB increased total net CO₂ absorption by 10.0%, whereas CC decreased total net CO₂ absorption by 13.8%. Biochar addition also increased SOC, dissolved organic carbon, and microbial biomass carbon contents. Therefore, the joint regulation of biochar addition and water-saving irrigation is a good technique for maintaining rice yield, increasing IWUE, and promoting soil fertility. Furthermore, when amended at the rate of 20 t·ha⁻¹, biochar addition will be a good strategy for sequestering carbon in paddy fields.

Bisphenol-A is widely used chemical in industry and unfortunately often detected in natural waters. Considered as an emerging pollutant, bisphenol-A represents an environmental problem due to its endocrine-disrupting behavior. The production of activated carbon from alternative precursors has shown to be attractive in the removal of emerging pollutants from the water. Activated carbon was produced from waste coffee by physical and chemical activation and applied in the removal of bisphenol-A. The samples were characterized by elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and analysis of textural properties. Bisphenol-A adsorption experiments showed that the chemically activated carbon was more efficient due to its high specific surface area (1039 m²/g) compared to the physically activated carbon (4.0 m²/g). The bisphenol-A adsorption data followed the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm, which indicated a maximum adsorption capacity of 123.22 mg/g for chemically activated carbon. The results demonstrated a potential use of the coffee grounds as a sustainable raw material for the production of chemically activated carbon that could be used in water treatment.

As one of the world’s largest economies, Chinese economy is maintaining the rapid economic development along with the cost of environmental degradation. The role of fiscal policy instruments is still unknown in the Chinese pollution equation. To do this, the present study is an effort to quantify the nexus of fiscal policy instruments and environmental degradation for Chinese economy over 1980 to 2016. The results reveal that fiscal policy instruments significantly increase the environmental degradation in the long run. The GDP and energy consumption of Chinese economy also enhance the environmental degradation respectively. The innovative accounting approach and diagnostics tests also applied to confirm the empirical estimates of study are reliable and valid for policy implications. The outcomes of study reveal that expansionary fiscal policy will lead to environmental degradation. Therefore, the Chinese authorities may consider the usage of advance and eco-friendly production methods to sustain the fast-growing economic growth along with the healthier environment.

The objective of the paper was to use transport model of selected pesticides (carbendazim, acetamiprid and imidacloprid) in determination of linear sorption coefficients in alluvial aquifer. For constructing transport model, results of a field experiment at the location of Kovin-Dubovac drainage system in Serbia were used in order to set hydraulic parameters (hydraulic conductivity, aquifer layer thickness of the observed area, effective porosity etc.). The field experiment consisted of a tracer test during which concentrations of non-reactive tracer (Cl⁻) and selected pesticides (carbendazim, acetamiprid and imidacloprid) were monitored. For better characterization of hydraulic parameters, a pumping test was conducted at the observed well and results were used in designing transport model. Simulation model was constructed with Lizza groundwater flow software and W.O.D.A. (Well Outline and Design Aid) solver. Obtained linear sorption coefficients in the sand and gravel water-bearing layer were 0.14 mL g⁻¹ for carbendazim and 0.11 mL g⁻¹ for acetamiprid and imidacloprid. Results from this study are a unique insight into mobility of observed pesticides in the alluvial groundwater in natural conditions and can be used in contamination assessment for drinking water wells.

The genetic basis and biochemical aspects of heavy metal endurance abilities have been precisely studied in planktonic bacteria; however, in nature, bacteria mostly grows as surface-attached communities called biofilms. A hallmark trait of biofilm is increased resistance to heavy metals compared with the resistance of planktonic bacteria. A proposed mechanism that contributes to this increased resistance is the enhanced expression of metal-resistant genes. bmtA gene coding for metallothionein protein is one such metal-resistant gene found in many bacterial spp. In the present study, lead (Pb) remediation potential of a biofilm-forming marine bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa N6P6 was explored. Biofilm-forming marine bacterium P. aeruginosa N6P6 possess bmtA gene and shows resistance towards many heavy metals, i.e., Pb, Cd, Hg, Cr, and Zn. The expression of metallothionein encoding gene bmtA is significantly high in 48-h-old biofilm culture (11. 4 fold) followed by 24-h-old biofilm culture of P. aeruginosa N6P6 (4.7 fold) (P < 0.05). However, in the case of planktonically grown culture of P. aeruginosa N6P6, the highest expression of bmtA gene was observed in 24-h-old culture. The expression of bmtA also increased significantly with increase in Pb concentration up to 800 ppm. CSLM analysis indicated significant reduction in the raw integrated density of biofilm-associated lipids and polysaccharides (PS) of P. aeruginosa N6P6 biofilm grown in Pb (sub-lethal concentration)-amended medium (P < 0.05), whereas no significant reduction was observed in the raw integrated density of EPS-associated protein. The role of bmtA gene as Pb(II)-resistant determinant was characterized by overexpressing the bmtA gene derived from P. aeruginosa N6P6 in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). ESI-MS and SDS-PAGE analyses validated the presence of 11.5-kDa MT protein isolated from Pb(II)-induced recombinant E. coli BL21(DE3) harboring bmtA gene.

The ecotoxicological characterization of waste according to the European Waste List (HP14) is part of its hazard classification, which is based on 15 different hazardous properties and should include toxicity tests representing the aquatic and terrestrial compartment. Besides established soil toxicity tests with bacteria, plants, and earthworms, the standardized test with the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (ISO 10872:2010) is suitable for testing soils and wastes, however, has never been validated for the purpose of waste toxicity assessment. Therefore, 23 different waste samples were tested for their toxicity on growth and reproduction of C. elegans to validate the suitability of ISO 10872 (ISO 2010) for assessing the ecotoxicological hazard of waste and to compare the results with those of other ecotoxicological test systems. C. elegans showed a comparable response to the waste samples as the earthworm avoidance test, however, with single samples where the nematodes indicated a higher toxicity than the E. fetida, thus, providing non-redundant information to the ecotoxicological hazard assessment of wastes. Also due to the short duration (4 days) and small-scale test set-up, the soil toxicity test with C. elegans turned out to be a valuable addition to already existing test batteries, for assessing the ecotoxicity of wastes in the soil compartment.

Glufosinate is a non-selective chiral herbicide, which has been used extensively around the world. However, limited information on the enantioselectivity of Rac- and L-glufosinate against crops. In this study, the enantioselective effects on the growth, antioxidant, and targeted enzyme activities of maize seedlings of chiral glufosinate were investigated. The results showed the enantioselective growth inhibitions were observed at both 1 and 5 mg/L concentration levels. L-Glufosinate induced more growth rate reduction in shoot height and weight compared to Rac-glufosinate. All of the antioxidant enzyme activities increased obviously in the leaves of maize seedlings treated by 1 mg/L of glufosinate. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, catalase (CAT) activity, peroxidase (POD) activity, glutathione reductase (GR) activity, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content induced by L-glufosinate were 1.36, 1.16, 1.51, 1.65, and 1.65 times higher than those by Rac-glufosinate, respectively Notably, the glutamine synthetase (GS) activity was significantly reduced to 80% and 57% in the control group at 1 mg/L treated with Rac- and L-glufosinate, respectively. Our results indicated that Rac- and L-glufosinate showed the obvious enantioselectivity in the growth of maize seedlings, which has shed light on the potential enantioselective phytotoxicity of glufosinate. Data provided here will be helpful to develop the environmentally friendly herbicides.

Surfactants widely exist in various kinds of wastewaters which could be treated by pressure-driven membrane separation (PDMS) techniques. Due to the special characteristics of surfactants, they may affect the performance of membrane filtration. Over the last two decades, there are a number of studies on treating wastewaters containing surfactants by PDMS. The current paper gives a review of the roles of surfactants in PDMS processes. The effects of surfactants on membrane performance were discussed via two aspects: influence of surfactants on membrane fouling and enhanced removal of pollutants by surfactants. The characteristics of surfactants in solution and at solid–liquid interface were summarized. Surfactants in membrane filtration processes cause membrane fouling mainly through adsorption, concentration polarization, pore blocking, and cake formation, and fouling degree may be influenced by various factors (feed water composition, membrane properties, and operation conditions). Furthermore, surfactants may also have a positive effect on membrane performance. Enhanced removal of various kinds of pollutants by PDMS in the presence of surfactants has been summarized, and the removal mechanism has been revealed. Based on the current reports, further studies on membrane fouling caused by surfactants and enhanced removal of pollutants by surfactant-aided membrane filtration were also proposed.
