As an important component of organic carbon (OC), brown carbon (BrC) plays a significant role in radiative forcing in the atmosphere. Water-insoluble OC (WIOC) generally has higher light absorption ability than water-soluble OC (WSOC). The mass absorption cross-section (MAC) of WIOC is normally investigated by dissolving OC in methanol. However, all the current methods have shortcomings due to neglecting the methanol insoluble particulate carbon that is detached from the filter and suspended in methanol extracts, which results in MAC uncertainties of the methanol-soluble BrC and its climate warming estimation. In this study, by investigating typical biomass combustion sourced aerosols from the Tibetan Plateau and ambient aerosols from rural and urban areas in China, we evaluated the light absorption of extractable OC fraction for the existing methods. Moreover, a new method was developed to overcome the methanol insoluble particulate carbon detachment problem to achieve more reliable MAC values. We found that OC can be dissolved in methanol in a short time (e.g., 1 h) and ultrasonic treatment and long-term soaking do not significantly increase the extractable OC fraction. Additionally, we proved that methanol insoluble particulate carbon detachment in methanol does exist in previous methods, causing overestimation of the BrC mass extracted by methanol and thus the underestimation of MAC values. We therefore recommend the newly developed extraction method in this study to be utilized in future related studies to quantitatively obtain the light absorption property of methanol-soluble BrC.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) has been reported to be widely distributed in the environment and wildlife with persistence. PFOS has various biological toxicity, especially disturbing the endocrine system. However, few studies have systematically evaluated its effect on sexual behaviors alteration and reproduction-related genes. This study was performed to assess the effect of PFOS exposure on sexual behaviors and genes in hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal–liver (HPGL) axis in adult zebrafish.Male adult zebrafish were exposed to PFOS (0, 2, 20, and 200 μg/L) and 5 μg/L estradiol (E₂) continuously for 21 days. Sexual behaviors were analyzed by zebrafish behavior tracking system and the mRNA levels of HPGL-related genes was detected by RT-qPCR.Body weight of the fish was increased in 2, 200 μg/L PFOS and E₂ groups, and body length was increased with exposure to 2 μg/L PFOS and E₂. The hepatic-somatic index was decreased significantly after 2 and 20 μg/L PFOS treatments. Highest PFOS (200 μg/L) and E₂ exposure impaired standard zebrafish sexual behaviors significantly such as chasing, nose-tail and tail-touching. In brains, the genes gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRHr) were down-regulated with exposure to PFOS with linear trend and E₂ exposure, and follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone were also down-regulated with exposure to 20 and 200 μg/L PFOS. In livers, the genes vitellogenin 1 and 3 were upregulated with some concentrations of PFOS and E₂, but estrogenic receptor α, β2 were upregulated in any concentration of PFOS and E₂. In testes, the expressions of follicle-stimulating hormone receptor, luteinizing hormone receptor, and androgen receptor genes were all significantly down-regulated with any exposure concentration of PFOS and E₂.PFOS may alter the zebrafish reproductive system by disrupting endocrine activity and impairing sexual behaviors.

Soil contaminants can cause direct harm to lizards due to their regular swallowing of soil particles. As the world’s fastest growing insecticide with long half-life in soil, the endocrine disrupting effect of neonicotinoids on lizards deserves more attention. In this report, we assessed the endocrine disrupting effect of imidacloprid on Eremias argus during 28 days of continuous exposure. Among the imidacloprid and its metabolites, only the metabolite 6-chloropyridic acid had a significant accumulation in the gonads and was positively correlated with its blood concentration. Imidacloprid might cause endocrine disrupting effects on lizards in two ways. First, the desnitro metabolites of imidacloprid could accumulate in the brain, inhibited the secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, and ultimately affected the feedback regulation of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal related hormones. Secondly, imidacloprid severely inhibited the gene expression of the corresponding enzymes in the gonadal anti-oxidative stress system, causing histological damage to the gonads and ultimately affecting gonadal function. Specifically, exposure to imidacloprid resulted in abnormal arrangement of spermatogenic epithelial epithelium, hyperplasia of epididymal wall, and oligospermia of male lizard. Meanwhile, gene expressions of cyp17, cyp19, and hsd17β were severely inhibited in the imidacloprid exposure group, consistent with decreased levels of testosterone and estradiol in plasma. Imidacloprid exposure could cause insufficient androgen secretion and less spermatogenesis in male lizards. The risk of imidacloprid exposure to female lizards was not as severe as that of male lizards, but it still inhibited the expression of cyp19 in the ovaries and led to a decrease in the synthesis of estradiol. This study firstly reported the endocrine disruption of imidacloprid to lizards, providing new data for limiting the use of neonicotinoids.

In order to tackle China’s severe air pollution issue, the government has released the “Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan” (known simply as the “Action Plan”) since 2013. A recent study reported a decreased trend in PM₂.₅ concentrations over 2013–2017, but O₃ pollution has become more serious. However, the effects of surface O₃ on crops are unclear after the implementation of the “Action Plan”. Here, we evaluated the potential negative effects of surface O₃ on three main food crops (winter wheat, maize and rice) across China during 2015–2018 using nationwide O₃ monitoring data and AOT40-yield response functions. Results suggested that mean O₃ concentration, AOT40 and relative yield loss in China showed an overall upward trend from 2015 to 2018. During winter wheat, maize, single rice, double-early rice, and double-late rice growing seasons, mean O₃ concentration in recent years ranged from 38.6 to 46.9 ppb, 40.2–43.9 ppb, 39.3–42.2 ppb, 33.8–40.0 ppb, and 35.9–39.1 ppb, respectively, and AOT40 mean values ranged from 8.5 to 14.3 ppm h, 10.5–13.4 ppm h, 9.8–11.9 ppm h, 5.2–9.2 ppm h, and 8.0–9.5 ppm h, respectively. O₃-induced yield reductions were estimated to range from 20.1 to 33.3% for winter wheat, 5.0–6.3% for maize, 7.3–8.8% for single rice, 3.9–6.8% for double-early rice and 5.9–7.1% for double-late rice. O₃-induced production losses for winter wheat, maize, single rice, double-early rice, and double-late rice totaled 39.5–88.2 million metric tons, 12.6–21.0 million metric tons, 9.5–11.3 million metric tons, 1.2–1.8 million metric tons, and 2.2–2.7 million metric tons, respectively, and the corresponding economic losses totaled 14.3–32.0 billion US$, 3.9–6.5 billion US$, 3.9–4.6 billion US$, 0.5–0.7 billion US$, and 0.9–1.1 billion US$, respectively. Our results suggested that the government should take effective measures to reduce O₃ pollution and its effects on agricultural production.

Much attention is currently paid to microplastic (MP) pollution, particularly in marine systems. There is increasing concern regarding the potential toxicity of MPs to organisms at the physiological and morphological levels. However, little is known about the impact of MPs on aquatic life, despite their ubiquitous presence in freshwater ecosystems. In this study, the aquatic plant Utricularia vulgaris was exposed to 1, 2 and 5 μm polystyrene fluorescent MP particles at concentrations of 15, 70 and 140 mg/L for 7 days. The toxic effects of MPs on the growth rate and morphological and physiological characteristics of U. vulgaris were assessed. The results showed that the relative growth rates and the functional traits of leaves (morphological and photosynthetic) were significantly inhibited at a high concentration of MP particles (140 mg/L) when compared to the control group. The impacts on growth performance were likely due to bioaccumulation of MPs in the bladders, as shown by confocal microscopy. Furthermore, the antioxidative enzyme activities showed that high concentrations of MPs induce high ecotoxicity and oxidative damage to U. vulgaris. Thus, U. vulgaris has the potential to be an excellent bioindicator of MP pollution in freshwater ecosystems and should further be applied in ecological risk assessments of the effects of MPs on higher aquatic plants.

Liu, Peng | Yang, Yang | Li, Mei
The large accumulation of heavy metals in the soil surrounding steel factories has become a severe environmental problem. However, few studies have focused on how the earthworm gut microbiota responds to heavy metals in the soil. This study used research sites at a steel factory in Nanjing, China, to investigate how the soil bacterial community and earthworm gut microbiota respond differently to heavy metal contamination using Illumina high-throughput sequencing targeting 16S rRNA genes. The bacterial community of earthworm guts showed a distinct structure compared with that of the soil, featuring a higher relative abundance of Proteobacteria (45.7%) and Bacteroidetes (18.8%). The bacterial community in the earthworm gut appeared more susceptible to heavy metal contamination compared with the soil community. For example, we identified 38 OTUs (Operational taxonomic units) significantly influenced by contamination among 186 abundant OTUs in the soil, whereas 63 out of the 127 abundant OTUs in the earthworm gut were altered significantly under contamination. This susceptibility may be partly explained by the lower alpha diversity and distinct microbial interactions in the gut. In addition, the accumulation of heavy metals also stimulated the growth of potential plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) in the earthworm gut, especially those related to indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase (ACCD) production, which may potentially benefit the phyto-remediation of heavy metals. These results contribute to our understanding of the soil biota and its interactions under heavy metal contamination and may provide further insights into the phyto-remediation of metal-contaminated soil.

Large benthic foraminifers (LBFs) are significant contributors to coral island formation in the Pacific Ocean. In recent years, the population of LBFs has decreased because of the increase in anthropogenic influences, such as wastewater (WW) discharge. To implement efficient mitigation measures, pollution tolerance in LBFs should be understood. However, the effects of WW on LBFs and their symbionts have not yet been demonstrated. This study examined the changes in the photosynthetic efficiency (Y[II]) of Calcarina gaudichaudii and Baculogypsina sphaerulata in response to WW by using a pulse-amplitude-modulation fluorometer. These LBFs were exposed to WW with different dilution levels for 22 days. The Y(II) values of the LBFs were found to deteriorate within 1–2 days. However, the Y(II) values both deteriorated and were enhanced in the experiments, thus indicating that WW contains both harmful and beneficial components. Baculogypsina sphaerulata showed an earlier response and greater sensitivity to WW and a higher epibiont infestation than C. gaudichaudii. This result can be attributed to the differences in the physiological and morphological responses of distinct LBFs. A sequencing analysis of 18S rDNA confirmed that the dominant eukaryotic symbionts in the two LBFs studied were Ochrophyta and Labyrinthulomycetes. These eukaryotic symbionts were released and attached as epibionts onto LBFs that were exposed to WW, thus leading to an increase in inactive LBFs. The Shannon–Weaver and Simpson diversity indices revealed that eukaryotic symbiont communities decreased in biodiversity after exposure to WW because of the abundance of algal symbionts. On the basis of these results, we conclude that WW, even with 10,000 × dilution, causes a decrease in active LBF populations owing to the release of eukaryotic symbionts, the decrease in biodiversity, and the infestation of epibionts even though Y(II) is temporarily enhanced. These responses are more significant in B. sphaerulata than in C. gaudichaudii.

As an essential micronutrient for animals with a narrow range between essentiality and toxicity, selenium (Se) usually coexists with chromium (Cr) in contaminated aquatic environments. This study investigated effects of three diets (Microcystis aeruginosa, Chlorella vulgaris and biofilms) exposed to Se or/and Cr on Aedes albopictus as a vector for the aquatic-terrestrial transfer of Se and Cr. Se(IV)-exposed mosquitoes concentrated Se up to 66-fold faster than Se(VI)-exposed ones, corresponding to the greater Se enrichment in Se(IV)-treated diets. Analysis using synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) showed that Se(0) (61.9–74.6%) dominated Se(VI)-exposed mosquitoes except for the C. vulgaris-fed larvae (organo-Se, 94.0%), while organo-Se accounted for 93.3–100.0% in Se(IV)-exposed mosquitoes. Cr accumulation in larvae (56.40–87.24 μg Cr/g DW) or adults (19.41–50.77 μg Cr/g DW) was not significantly different among all Cr(VI) treatments, despite varying diet Cr levels. With Cr(0) being dominant (57.7–94.0%), Cr(VI)-exposed mosquitoes posed little threat to predators. Although mosquitoes exposed to Se or Cr had shorter wings, adults supplied with C. vulgaris or biofilms co-exposed to Se(VI) and Cr(VI) had wings significantly (1.1–1.2 fold) longer than Se(VI) only exposed ones. Overall, our study reveals the role of Ae. albopictus in transferring waterborne Se and Cr from the contaminated aquatic ecosystem to the terrestrial ecosystem with the resulting eco-risks to wildlife in both ecosystems.

Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) are widely found in the environment due to vast human consumption. Lots of work has been devoted to investigating the occurrence and seasonal variations globally. To fully understand characteristics and cross-year variation of PhACs in Beijing, 35 PhACs were analyzed in 46 sites across Beijing from both urban and suburban areas. Concentrations of target PhACs were ranged from levels of ng L⁻¹ to μg L⁻¹. Metoprolol (524 ng L⁻¹), caffeine (390 ng L⁻¹) and acetaminophen (156 ng L⁻¹) were the three most abundant non-antibiotics with the highest median concentration, and nalidixic acid (135 ng L⁻¹), erythromycin (64 ng L⁻¹) and sulfamethoxazole (77 ng L⁻¹) were the most abundant antibiotics. Urban and suburban areas are distinguished by PhAC composition in cluster analysis due to different wastewater collection rate. The ratio of easily removable compound group and hardly removable group was then proposed to reflect the wastewater collection rate. The compositional comparison of PhACs in WWTPs’ effluents and their receiving rivers further illustrates the impact of WWTPs in urban area. Higher proportion of antibiotics (>30%) in suburban area reflected the impact of presence of livestock farms, which should be concerned. Further statistical analyses show an improving trend of wastewater collection rate, and excluding metoprolol, an anti-hypertension medicine, the total concentration of 13 target PhACs was reduced by 72% during 2013–2017.

Vehicular non-exhaust emissions account for a significant share of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) pollution, but few studies have successfully quantified the contribution of non-exhaust emissions via real-world measurements. Here, we conduct a comprehensive study combining tunnel measurements, laboratory dynamometer and resuspension experiments, and chemical mass balance modeling to obtain source profiles, real-world emission factors (EFs), and inventories of vehicular non-exhaust PM emissions in Chinese megacities. The average vehicular PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀ EFs measured in the four tunnels in four megacities (i.e., Beijing, Tianjin, Zhengzhou, and Qingdao) range from 8.8 to 16.0 mg km⁻¹ veh⁻¹ and from 37.4 to 63.9 mg km⁻¹ veh⁻¹, respectively. A two-step source apportionment is performed with the information of key tracers and localized profiles of each exhaust and non-exhaust source. Results show that the reconstructed PM₁₀ emissions embody 51–64% soil and cement dust, 26–40% tailpipe exhaust, 7–9% tire wear, and 1–3% brake wear, while PM₂.₅ emissions are mainly composed of 59–80% tailpipe exhaust, 11–31% soil and cement dust, 4–10% tire wear, and 1–5% brake wear. Fleet composition, road gradient, and pavement roughness are essential factors in determining on-road non-exhaust emissions. Based on the EFs and the results of source apportionment, we estimate that the road dust, tire wear, and brake wear emit 8.1, 2.5, and 0.8 Gg year⁻¹ PM₂.₅ in China, respectively. Our study highlights the importance of non-exhaust emissions in China, which is essential to assess their impacts on air quality, human health, and climate and formulating effective controlling measures.
