Microplastics, an emerging pollutant in the environment, have attracted extensive attention in recent years for their possible negative impact on organisms. However, direct and indirect effects of polystyrene (PS) microplastics on vegetables are still not completely known. In this study, we used red lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. Red Sails) in a hydroponic system to investigate the effects of nano- and micro-sized PS and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) on the photosynthesis and red lettuce quality. The results clearly indicated that PS reduced the bioavailability of DBP while causing a decrease in the photosynthetic parameters as well as the total chorophyll content compared to DBP alone by affecting the crystalline structure of the water-soluble chlorophyll protein. Compared with DBP monotherapy, the presence of PS significantly increased hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde content in the lettuce treated with DBP, indicating serious oxidative damage. Furthermore, the soluble protein and sugar content in lettuce leaves decreased with higher PS concentration and smaller PS size. It may be due to PS inhibited lettuce root and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activities. In contrast, nitrite content increased significantly with the induction of the glutathione-ascorbic acid cycle, indicating that the presence of PS reduced the quality of DBP-treated-red lettuce. Additionally, the nano-sized PS greatly inhibited lettuce growth and quality more than the micro-sized PS. This study described the interactions between microplastics and phthalates using molecular simulation and experimental validation to highlight the potential risks of microplastics on vegetable crop production.

2021
Xu, Lili | Cao, Liang | Huang, Wei | Liu, Jinhu | Dou, Shuozeng
Plastics are globally distributed in oceans and can pose a threat to the environment and organisms. In this study, plastic pollution in surface water and sediments of the Bohai Sea was assessed based on plastic abundance, distribution and characteristics (shape, polymer, size and color). Water and sediment samples were collected across the sea using a plankton net (330 μm) and a grab sampler, respectively. The following conclusions were reached. 1) In surface water, large plastics were less abundant (0.14 items/m³) and showed less diverse characteristics than microplastics (0.79 items/m³) but did not significantly differ in spatial distribution. 2) Microplastics in water were more abundant (1.95 items/m³) with more diverse characteristics in Liaodong Bay than in other regions of the sea (0.26–0.59 items/m³). Plastic waste from highly concentrated agricultural, industrial and fishery activities could make large contributions to microplastics in Liaodong Bay. Additionally, low hydrodynamics and long distance to Bohai Strait are unfavorable for diffusion of particles, facilitating the retention of microplastics and increasing the abundance in this bay. 3) Microplastics in sediments were smaller in terms of dominant sizes (<0.5 mm) with less diverse characteristics than particles in water (0.5–1.5 mm). Specifically, fragments, foams and lines dominated among the microplastics in water, whereas fibers and fragments were dominant particles in sediments; alkyd resin, polyethylene, polystyrene and polypropylene (PP) predominated among the particles in water, but rayon, cellulose and PP were dominant particles in sediments. 4) Neither abundance nor size of microplastics in the two media was proportionally correlated and showed low similarity indexes of polymer (0.16), shape (0.29) or color (0.38). This could be related to mismatch in spatiotemporal distributions and variations in the characteristics, fate and behavior of microplastics in the two media. The findings provide knowledge for tracing the sources of plastics in the Bohai Sea.

The mediating influence of thyroid function on the association of phthalate exposure with glucose metabolism, including insulin resistance, remains unclear. We explored the mediating influence of thyroid hormone levels on the phthalate exposure–insulin resistance association. This cross-sectional study of 217 Taiwanese adults assessed insulin resistance (Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance, HOMA-IR scores) and the levels of 11 urinary phthalate metabolites and 5 thyroid hormones. Multiple regression models were used to analyze the associations among serum thyroid hormone levels, urinary phthalate metabolite levels, and HOMA-IR scores. The mediation analysis assessed the influence of thyroid function on the phthalate exposure–HOMA-IR association. Our data indicated urinary mono-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP) levels was negatively associated with free thyroxine (T₄) (β = −0.018; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.031, −0.005) and positively associated with HOMA-IR scores (β = 0.051, 95% CI: 0.012, 0.090). The study also revealed urinary mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEOHP) levels was negatively associated with free T₄ (β = −0.036, 95% CI: −0.056, −0.017) and HOMA-IR (β = 0.070, 95% CI: 0.013, 0.126). Free T₄ and HOMA-IR had a negative association (β = −0.757, 95% CI: −1.122, −0.392). In the mediation analysis, free T₄ mediated 24% and 35% of the associations of urinary MEHP and MEOHP with HOMA-IR, respectively. Our findings revealed the mediating role of thyroid function in the phthalate exposure–glucose metabolism association in adults.

An emerging stress of pesticides in plant and soil is closely watched as it affects crop antioxidant systems, nutritional quality, and flavor. Although selenium (Se) can enhance the resistance of plants, the protective mechanism of nanoselenium is still not known under the long-term pesticide stress in tea trees. In this study, we investigated the potential effects of foliar application of nanoselenium for a two-year field experiment on tea plants under pesticide-induced oxidative stress. Compared to control, nano-Se (10 mg/L) markedly enhanced the protein, soluble sugar, carotenoid, tea polyphenols, and catechins contents. High levels of theanine, glutamic acid, proline, and arginine were found to be induced most likely by adjusting the GS-GOGAT cycle. Se-supplementation may promote tea leaves’ secondary metabolism, thus increasing the accumulation of total phenols and flavonoids (apigenin, kaempferol, quercetin, myricetin, and rutin). It also minimized the accumulation of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide anion by activating the antioxidants enzymes including in the AsA-GSH cycle. Selenium-rich tea also showed better fragrance and flavor. In summary, nano-Se can ameliorate the nutrients quality and abiotic stresses resistance of crops.

Cadmium (Cd), which is considered a carcinogenic metal, promotes breast cancer (BC) progression, but the precise mechanism remains unclear. Herein, MCF-7 and T47-D cells were treated with 0.1, 1, and 10 μM cadmium chloride (CdCl₂) for 24, 48 and 72 h. In our study, Cd exposure significantly accelerated the proliferation, migration and invasion of MCF-7 and T47-D cells. Notably, Cd inhibited autophagic flux by suppressing ATG5-dependent autophagosome formation but had no significant effect on autophagosome-lysosome fusion and lysosomal function. The genetic enhancement of autophagy through ATG5 overexpression suppressed the Cd-mediated increases in proliferation, migration and invasion, which indicated a carcinogenic role of autophagy impairment in Cd-exposed BC cells. GSEA and GeneMANIA were utilized to demonstrate that the Cd-induced decrease in ACSS2 expression mechanistically inhibited ATG5-dependent autophagy in BC cells. Importantly, ACSS2 overexpression increased the level of H3K27 acetylation in the promoter region of ATG5, and this result maintained autophagic flux and abolished the Cd-induced increases in proliferation, migration and invasion. We also verified that the expression of ACSS2 in BC tissues was low and positively related to ATG5 expression. These findings indicated that the promoting effect of Cd on BC cell proliferation, migration and invasion through the impairment of ACSS2/ATG5-dependent autophagic flux suggests a new mechanism for BC cell proliferation and metastasis stimulated by Cd.

Phosphorus (P) discharges from human activities result in eutrophication of lakes. We investigated whether the forms of phosphorus (P) in rivers with high effluent loads flowing through urban areas of Sapporo, Japan, were transformed when transported downstream into a eutrophic lake, namely Lake Barato. We hypothesized that the inorganic P supplied from the rivers might be transformed to organic forms in the lake. The results showed that soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and particulate inorganic phosphorus (PIP) dominated in the river discharge to the lake. Suspended solids in the rivers were rich in iron (Fe) so PIP was associated with Fe. A comparison of the concentrations at the river mouth and 4.5 km downstream showed that the concentrations of SRP and PIP were lower at 4.5 km downstream than at the river mouth, whereas the concentrations of organic P (i.e., dissolved organic phosphorus and particulate organic phosphorus) were similar. The results from solution ³¹P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of lake water showed that pyrophosphate was only present in the particulate fraction, while orthophosphate diesters (DNA-P) were only present in the dissolved fraction. Riverine samples contained orthophosphate (ortho-P) only, while lake samples contained ortho-P, orthophosphate monoesters, and DNA-P. The results suggest that the P forms, particularly those of dissolved P, shifted from inorganic to organic forms as the water was discharged from the river to the lake.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has become a global public health threaten. A series of strict prevention and control measures were implemented in China, contributing to the improvement of air quality. In this study, we described the trend of air pollutant concentrations and the incidence of COVID-19 during the epidemic and applied generalized additive models (GAMs) to assess the association between short-term exposure to air pollution and daily confirmed cases of COVID-19 in 235 Chinese cities. Disease progression based on both onset and report dates as well as control measures as potential confounding were considered in the analyses. We found that stringent prevention and control measures intending to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, contributed to a significant decline in the concentrations of air pollutants except ozone (O₃). Significant positive associations of short-term exposure to air pollutants, including particulate matter with diameters ≤2.5 μm (PM₂.₅), particulate matter with diameters ≤10 μm (PM₁₀), and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) with daily new confirmed cases were observed during the epidemic. Per interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM₂.₅ (lag0-15), PM₁₀ (lag0-15), and NO₂ (lag0-20) were associated with a 7% [95% confidence interval (CI): (4–9)], 6% [95% CI: (3–8)], and 19% [95% CI: (13–24)] increase in the counts of daily onset cases, respectively. Our results suggest that there is a statistically significant association between ambient air pollution and the spread of COVID-19. Thus, the quarantine measures can not only cut off the transmission of virus, but also retard the spread by improving ambient air quality, which might provide implications for the prevention and control of COVID-19.

The spatial distributions, fluxes, and environmental effects of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) were investigated in the Yellow Sea (YS) and the East China Sea (ECS) in spring. The average concentrations of ethane, propane, i-/n-butane, ethylene, propylene and isoprene in the seawater were 18.1 ± 6.4, 15.4 ± 4.7, 6.8 ± 2.9, 6.4 ± 3.2, 67.1 ± 26.7, 20.5 ± 8.7 and 17.1 ± 11.1 pmol L⁻¹, respectively. The alkenes in the surface seawater were more abundant than their saturated homologs and NMHCs concentrations (with the exception of isoprene) decreased with carbon number. The spatial variations of isoprene were consistent with the distributions of chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and Chaetoceros, Skeletonema, Nitzschia mainly contributed to the production of isoprene, while the others’ distributions might be related to their photochemical production. Observations in atmospheric NMHCs indicated alkanes in the marine atmosphere decreased from inshore to offshore due to influence of the continental emissions, while alkenes were largely derived from the oceanic source. In addition, no apparent diurnal discrepancy of atmospheric NMHCs (except for isoprene) were found between daytime and night. As the main sink of NMHCs in seawater, the average sea-to-air fluxes of ethane, propane, i-/n-butane, ethylene and propylene were 31.70, 29.75, 18.49, 15.89, 239.6, 67.94 and 52.41 nmol m⁻² d⁻¹, respectively. The average annual emissions of isoprene accounted for 0.1–1.3% of the global ocean emissions, which indicated that the coastal and shelf areas might be significant sources of isoprene. Furthermore, this study represents the first effort to estimate the environmental effects caused by NMHCs over the YS and the ECS and the results demonstrated contributions of alkanes to ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation were lower than those of the alkenes and the largest contributor was isoprene.

Methane emitted by insects is considered to be an important source of atmospheric methane. Here we report the stimulation of methane emission in the cockroach Periplaneta americana and termite Coptotermes chaohuensis, insects with abundant methanogens, by neonicotinoids, insecticides widely used to control insect pests. Cycloxaprid (CYC) and imidacloprid (IMI) caused foregut expansion in P. americana, and increased the methane emission. Antibiotics mostly eliminated the effects. In P. americana guts, hydrogen levels increased and pH values decreased, which could be significantly explained by the gut bacterium community change. The proportion of several bacterium genera increased in guts following CYC treatment, and two genera from four could generate hydrogen. Hydrogen is a central intermediate in methanogenesis. All increased methanogens in both foregut and hindgut used hydrogen as electron donor to produce methane. Besides, the up-regulation of mcrA, encoding the enzyme for the final step of methanogenesis suggested the enhanced methane production ability in present methanogens. In the termite, hydrogen levels in gut and methane emission also significantly increased after neonicotinoid treatment, which was similar to the results in P. americana. In summary, neonicotinoids changed bacterium community in P. americana gut to generate more hydrogen, which then stimulated gut methanogens to produce and emit more methane. The finding raised a new concern over neonicotinoid applications, and might be a potential environmental risk associated with atmospheric methane.

2021
Liu, Xiaomei | Wang, Dan | Tang, Jingchun | Liu, Feng | Wang, Lan
The spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is a global environmental issue. Dissolved biochar is more likely to contact bacteria in water, producing ecological risks. This study explored the effects of dissolved biochar on ARGs transfer in bacteria. Conjugative transfer efficiency was significantly different following treatment with different types of dissolved biochar. Typically, humic acid-like substance in dissolved biochar can significantly improve the transfer efficiency of ARGs between bacteria. When the concentration of dissolved biochar was ≤10 mg biochar/mL, humic acid-like substance substantially promoted ARGs transfer. An increase in dissolved biochar concentration weakened the ARGs transfer from humic acid-like substance. The inhibitory effects of small-molecule matters dominated, decreasing conjugative transfer frequency. At a concentration of 100 mg biochar/mL, the conjugative transfer efficiency of all treatments was lower than that of control. Compared with corn straw dissolved biochar, there were more transconjugants in pine sawdust dissolved biochar. Following treatment with 10 mg biochar/mL pine sawdust dissolved biochar, the number of transconjugants was at its maximum; approximately 7.3 folds higher than the control. We also explored mechanisms by which dissolved biochar impacts conjugative transfer. Due to the complex composition of dissolved biochar, its effects on the expression of conjugative transfer-related genes were also dynamic. This study investigates the ecological risk of biochar and guides its scientific application.
