Pesticide Leaching from Agricultural Fields with Ridges and Furrows

In the evaluation of the risk of pesticide leaching to groundwater, the soil surface is usually assumed to be level, although important crops like potato are grown on ridges. A fraction of the water from rainfall and sprinkler irrigation may flow along the soil surface from the ridges to the furrows, thus bringing about an extra load of water and pesticide on the furrow soil. A survey of the literature reveals that surface-runoff from ridges to furrows is a well-known phenomenon but that hardly any data are available on the quantities of water and pesticide involved. On the basis of a field experiment with additional sprinkler irrigation, computer simulations were carried out with the Pesticide Emission Assessment at Regional and Local scales model for separate ridge and furrow systems in a humic sandy potato field. Breakthrough curves of bromide ion (as a tracer for water flow) and carbofuran (as example pesticide) were calculated for 1-m depth in the field. Bromide ion leached comparatively fast from the furrow system, while leaching from the ridge system was slower showing a maximum concentration of about half of that for the furrow system. Carbofuran breakthrough from the furrow system began about a month after application and increased steadily to substantial concentrations. Because the transport time of carbofuran in the ridge soil was much longer, no breakthrough occurred in the growing season. The maximum concentration of carbofuran leaching from the ridge-furrow field was computed to be a factor of six times as high as that computed for the corresponding level field. The study shows that the risk of leaching of pesticides via the furrow soil can be substantially higher than that via the corresponding level field soil.

Oil spill leaves detrimental effects to environment, living organisms, and economy. As such, it is of considerable interest to find an effective, simple, and inexpensive method to treat this calamity. This work reports the use of banana trunk fibers (BTF) modified with oleic acid, stearic acid, castor oil, and palm oil for oil spill recovery. The maximum sorption capacity, effect of oil to water ratio, effect of light oil fractions, and effect of dissolved organic compounds in weathered oil-contaminated seawater were studied. It is found that BTF treated with oleic acid exhibited the best sorption capacity for engine oil, dissolved organic compounds in weathered oil, and light oil fractions. The equilibrium process was described well by the Freundlich isotherm model, and the kinetic studies show good correlation coefficients for a pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Global demand for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is increasing dramatically. As CNTs become commonplace, the range of uses is expected to expand as will the potential for release into ecosystems. Recent research suggests that CNTs display increased suspension in water in the presence of natural organic matter (NOM), thus increasing their ability for transport and dispersion. However, it remains unclear how CNT size will affect the suspension of CNTs in natural waters. Here we examine the effect of CNT diameter (10-500 nm) and CNT length (1-40 μm) in the presence of 1% sodium docecyl sulfate (SDS), and two different freshwater NOM extracts on suspension of CNTs in water. Absorbance spectrometry (UV-VIS) was used to determine CNT concentration in solutions over a 68 h period in the dark. Seventy to ninety-five percent of the CNTs settled out of the 1% SDS solution as compared to 23-54% in each of the NOM solutions. The half-life of suspension in solution increased with decreasing CNT diameter (from 13.9 to 138.8 h⁻¹ for solutions containing NOM). These results demonstrate that settling rates are strongly determined by NOM presence in solution as well as CNT size.

Air pollution is a major contributor to several respiratory problems, it affects the whole population in general but children are more susceptible. Exposure to automobile exhaust is associated with increased respiratory symptoms and may impair lung function in children. In view of this, the study was conducted among the children of Delhi, the capital city of India, where ambient air quality was much above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards. The study was conducted in children aged 9-17 years. Pulmonary function test was carried out following the guideline of American Thoracic Society using a portable, electronic spirometer. Air quality data was collected from Central and State Pollution Control Boards. In addition, the level of particulate matter in indoor air was measured by portable laser photometer. Lung function was reduced in 43.5% schoolchildren of the urban area compared with 25.7% of control group. The urban children had increased prevalence of restrictive, obstructive, as well as combined type of lung functions deficits. Besides higher prevalence, the magnitude of lung function deficits was also much more in them. After controlling potential confounders like season, socioeconomic conditions and ETS, PM10 level in ambient air was found to be associated with restrictive (OR = 1.35, 95% CI 1.07-1.58), obstructive (OR = 1.45, 95% CI 1.16-1.82), and combined type of lung function deficits (OR = 1.74, 95% CI 1.37-2.71) in children. Spearman's rank correlation test reaffirmed the association. The study confirms that the level of air pollution is affecting the children.

Peroxidase from fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) seeds was highly effective in the decolorization of textile effluent. Effluent was recalcitrant to the action of fenugreek seeds peroxidase (FSP). However, in order to effectively decolorize effluent by peroxidase, the role of six redox mediators has been investigated. The maximum decolorization of textile effluent was observed in the presence of 1.0 mM 1-hydroxybenzotrizole, 0.7 mM H₂O₂, and 0.4 U ml⁻¹ of FSP in the buffer of pH 5.0 at 40°C in 2.5 h. The decolorization of textile effluent in a batch process by peroxidase was 85% in 5 h, whereas the complete decolorization of textile effluent by membrane-entrapped FSP was observed within 11 h of its operation. The absorption spectra of treated effluent exhibited a marked diminution in the absorbance at different wavelengths compared to untreated effluent.

Photocatalytic activity in titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has been extensively studied because of its potential use in sterilization, sanitation, and remediation applications. The aim of the study reported here was to assess the feasibility of “fixed” TiO₂ as the photocatalyst for inactivating pathogenic bacteria selected, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, from a water stream. The investigation was undergone in a properly designed laboratory-scale evaluation. Using the system reported here, we obtained an effective bactericidal capability for E. coli and S. aureus with 90.0% and 98.0% after 30 and 10 min ultraviolet-A light irradiation with fixed TiO₂, respectively. Parameters such as the various initial bacteria concentration, TiO₂ concentrations, interruption of illumination, turbidity, and coexisted organic matters were examined to identify the removal efficiency in the photocatalytic reaction. Results indicated the negative effect by high bacteria concentration, coexisted organic matters, and turbidity on inactivation of bacteria, and positive effect on disinfection was associated with higher TiO₂ concentration. Furthermore, our results indicated that under the same experimental conditions, the removal efficiency of the system in synthetic water was performed better than that of crude water. This inferior removal capability in crude water is mainly caused by the negative effect from the unknown coexisted factors.

Occurrence and distribution of three typical endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), nonylphenol mixture (NPs), bisphenol A (BPA), and 17α-ethynilestradiol (EE2), were investigated in the seawater, suspended solid, and sediment around the coastline of Shenzhen city. Field surveys were conducted in both dry season and rainy season to access the influence of rainfall and basic water quality parameters on the distribution of target EDCs. In the seawater, NPs, BPA, and EE2 ranged from 31 to 1,777 ng/l, from 11 to 777 ng/l, and from 10 to 269 ng/l, respectively. In the suspended solid, NPs, BPA, and EE2 were in the range from 3 to 289 ng/l, from 1 to 75 ng/l, and from 1 to 29 ng/l, respectively. In the sediment, NPs, BPA, and EE2 varied from 9 to 355 ng/g dry weight (dw), from 3 to 156 ng/g dw, and from 7 to 144 ng/g dw, respectively. With the increasing rainfall, the concentrations of target EDCs decreased in seawater and sediment and increased in suspended solid at all the sampling locations. Among the six measured basic water quality parameters, the volatile suspended solid value was positively related with the partition property of target EDCs between suspended solid and seawater. Based on the results of principal component analysis, dissolved organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorous had close relationships with the distribution of target EDCs in the seawater. Temperature and dissolved oxygen had little relationship with the distribution of target EDCs in the coastal area.

Present research has delineated the biosorption potential of three different nonliving biomasses namely eucalyptus bark saw dust, mango bark saw dust, and pineapple fruit peel with respect to Zn (II) ion removal from liquid phase through batch experiments. The efficacy of Zn (II) ion biosorption onto surface of biosorbents was judged and correlated with biosorbent particle size, surface chemistry, and surface texture. Maximum metal ion uptake capacity, percentage removal, and minimum equilibrium concentration as 1.688 mg/g, 84.4%, and 1.56 mg/l, respectively, was obtained using eucalyptus bark saw dust mediated biosorption followed by mango bark saw dust as 1.028 mg/g, 51.4%, and 4.867 mg/l and pineapple fruit peel as 0.45 mg/g, 22.9%, and 7.71 mg/l, respectively, at a particle size of 0.5 mm. Additionally, present investigation also proved that biosorption efficiency and metal ion interaction with adsorbent surface also depends upon presence of functional groups involved in metal ion adsorption and surface porosity.

Cattle manure vermicompost has been used for the adsorption of Al(III) and Fe(II) from both synthetic solution and kaolin industry wastewater. The optimum conditions for Al(III) and Fe(II) adsorption at pH 2 (natural pH of the wastewater) were particle size of ≤250 µm, 1 g/10 mL adsorbent dose, contact time of 4 h, and temperature of 25°C. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms fitted reasonably well in the experimental data, and their constants were evaluated, with R ² values from 0.90 to 0.98. In synthetic solution, the maximum adsorption capacity of the vermicompost for Al(III) was 8.35 mg g⁻¹ and for Fe(II) was 16.98 mg g⁻¹ at 25°C when the vermicompost dose was 1 g 10 mL⁻¹, and the initial adjusted pH was 2. The batch adsorption studies of Al(III) and Fe(II) on vermicompost using kaolin wastewater have shown that the maximum adsorption capacities were 1.10 and 4.30 mg g⁻¹, respectively, at pH 2. The thermodynamic parameter, the Gibbs free energy, was calculated for each system, and the negative values obtained confirm that the adsorption processes were spontaneous.

In this work, we evaluated the effect of harmful ecotoxins, 4,5,6-trichloroguaicol (4,5,6-TCG) and tetrachloroguaiacol (TeCG), on the oxidation of the fluorescent probe dihydrorhodamine 123, the content of free phenols and the level of the total, oxidized and reduced glutathione in the leaves of reed canary grass (Phalaris arudinacea). Furthermore, the effect on the activity of guaiacol peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase was investigated. Both 4,5,6-TCG and TeCG increased the activity of guaiacol peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase, they also elevated the content of free phenols and the level of the total glutathione. A stronger effect was exerted by tetrachloroguaiacol, which strongly increased the level of the total glutathione and the content of free phenols on the 3rd and 6th day of the experiment. The activity of glutathione S-transferase was more intensively induced by trichloroguaiacol. Both 4,5,6-TCG and TeCG oxidized dihydrorodamine 123 and the effect was stronger in the presence of magnesium ions.
