Effectiveness of a Full-Scale Constructed Wetland for the Removal of Metals from Domestic Wastewater

The main objective of this study was to examine the efficacy and capacity of constructed wetlands for metal removal. Between January 2006 and December 2008, removal of Cr, Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb, B, Ni, As, Fe, Hg, and Mn was measured on a monthly basis at a hierarchical mosaic of artificial ecosystems which has been in operation since 1998. The results showed a great variety of average removal efficiencies, in the range of 55% for chromium and −73% for manganese. Four elements presented negative removal: nickel, iron, arsenic, and manganese. Seasonal removal efficiencies were also studied for each element. Moreover, a correlation assessment among metal removal efficiencies and different parameters of each basin in the hierarchical mosaic of artificial ecosystems was performed. Negative significant correlations were found among Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, As, Ni, Cd, and Hg removal and the inlet concentrations. In general, the treatment system was not a good system for removal of metals from wastewater as, in relation to other constructed wetlands, the system was not able to provide efficient removal of metals.

The present study focused on the degradation of mixed pesticides using UV-induced photocatalytic degradation of lindane (1α,2α,3β,4α,5α,6β-hexachlorocyclohexane), methyl parathion (O,O-dimethyl-O-4-nitrophenyl phosphorothioate), and dichlorvos (2,2-dichlorovinyl-O-O-dimethyl phosphate). Different grades of TiO₂ were prepared through the acid route (AR), alcohol route (AlR), and surfactant route (SR) and their photocatalytic activity were compared with commercially available Degussa P-25 TiO₂. The rate of degradation of pesticides was high for TiO₂ prepared through the SR compared to the other three catalysts. The crystalline structure and morphology of SR TiO₂ was identified with scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray analyzer, UV, and transmission electron microscope analyses and was compared with that of Degussa P-25 TiO₂. Degradation studies of individual as well as mixed pesticides were carried out. The intermediate formed during the photodegradation of methyl parathion, lindane, and dichlorvos were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis.

The protection and conservation of natural resources is one of the main priorities of modern society. Water is perhaps our most valuable resource, and thus should be recycled. Many of the current recycling techniques for polluted water only concentrate the pollutant without degrading it or eliminating it. In this sense, advanced oxidation processes are possibly one of the most effective methods for the treatment of wastewater containing organic products (effluents from chemical and agrochemical industries, the textile industry, paints, dyes, etc.). More conventional techniques cannot be used to treat such compounds because of their high chemical stability and/or low biodegradability. This article describes, classifies, and analyzes different types of advanced oxidation processes and their application to the treatment of polluted wastewater.

Background, aim and scope Pulp and paper mills generate a plethora of pollutants depending upon the type of pulping process. Efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of such effluents have been made by developing more effective biological treatment systems in terms of biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, colour and lignin content. This study is the first that reports an evaluation of the effects of a tertiary treatment by fungi (Pleurotus sajor caju, Trametes versicolor and Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Rhizopus oryzae) on individual organic compounds of a Eucalyptus globulus bleached kraft pulp and paper mill final effluent after secondary treatment (final effluent). Material and methods The tertiary treatment with P. sajor caju, T. versicolor and P. chrysosporium and R. oryzae was performed in batch reactors, which were inoculated with separate fungi species and monitored throughout the incubation period. Samples from effluent after secondary and after tertiary treatment with fungi were analysed for both absorbance and organic compounds. The samples were extracted for organic compounds using solid-phase extraction (SPE) and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The efficiencies of the SPE procedure was evaluated by recovery tests. Results A total of 38 compounds (carboxylic acids, fatty alcohols, phenolic compounds and sterols) were identified and quantified in the E. globulus bleached kraft pulp mill final effluent after secondary treatment. Recoveries from the extraction procedure were between 98.2% and 99.9%. The four fungi species showed an adequate capacity to remove organic compounds and colour. Tertiary treatment with R. oryzae was able to remove 99% of organic compounds and to reduce absorbance on 47% (270 nm) and 74% (465 nm). P. sajor caju, T. versicolor and P. chrysosporium were able to remove 97%, 92% and 99% of organic compounds, respectively, and reduce 18% (270 nm) to 77% (465 nm), 39% (270 nm) to 58% (465 nm) and 31% (270 nm) to 10% (465 nm) of absorbance, respectively. Discussion The wide variety of organic compounds found in the final effluent must be due to the degradation of E. globulus wood in pulp and paper mill. The concentrations of organic compounds in the final effluent of E. globulus bleached kraft pulp mill were in residual levels maybe due to the secondary treatment. The recovery tests showed the effectiveness of the extraction procedure, and no losses of analyte were suspected in the analytical determinations. Lignin derivatives such as vanilic acid, syringic acid, guaiacol, syringol and phloroglucinol were totally removed by R. oryzae, but the 47% absorbance reduction obtained at 270 nm suggests that these species were not able to complete degradation of lignin macromolecular compounds. Conclusions The organic compounds (carboxylic acids, fatty alcohols, phenolic compounds and sterols) were removed more efficiently by tertiary treatment with R. oryzae or P. chrysosporium, followed by P. sajor caju and T. versicolor. Regarding the removal of both colour and organic compounds, the tertiary treatment with R. oryzae was the most efficient. Recommendations and perspectives In order to reduce the deleterious impacts of paper mill effluents, efforts have been made to develop more effective advanced tertiary treatments. This study may serve as a basis of characterisation, in terms of organic compounds of E. globulus bleached kraft pulp mill final effluent after secondary treatment and as an effort to understand the effects of tertiary treatments with fungi on low concentrations of organic compounds from biological secondary treatment.

This study evaluated the effect of lead (Pb(II)), zinc (Zn(II)) and copper (Cu(II)) on growth and sporulation of four Halophytophthora species (Halophytophthora vesicula, Halophytophthora elongata, Halophytophthora spinosa var. lobata, and an oogonia-producing Halophytophthora sp.) isolated from different mangrove sites in Taiwan. Results show that all isolates grew well or even better at 1 ppm concentration of the heavy metals tested. Growth of all test isolates was totally inhibited at 500 ppm, except for H. spinosa var. lobata exposed to Zn(II). For sporulation, all isolates produced moderate to abundant zoosporangia or oogonia at 1 ppm Pb(II) and Zn(II). Production of zoosporangia by H. vesicula, H. elongata and H. spinosa var. lobata was significantly affected or totally inhibited at 1 ppm Pb(II) and Zn(II) and all concentrations of Cu(II). Abnormal oogonia were produced by Halophytophthora sp. at 10 ppm Cu(II) and 100 ppm of the three heavy metals. In general, Cu(II) and Zn(II) were found to be the most toxic, and the least toxic was Pb(II). H. spinosa var. lobata was the most tolerant to all the heavy metals, while H. vesicula and H. elongata were the most sensitive. Results of this study shows that increased concentrations of Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) in the mangrove environment can significantly affect growth and impair normal reproduction of Halophytophthora species.

Amphibians, particularly frogs, are increasingly used as bioindicators of contaminant accumulation in pollution studies. Their use for field scientific purposes is limited because most frog species are endangered and protected in most countries; killing of specimens are not allowed. The aim of our study was to work out and assess a method by which the elemental contents of frog bones could be estimated effectively based on the toe bones. For this purpose, Rana esculenta L. individuals were collected from an urban pond in Debrecen city (Hungary). The following large bones were also analysed: skull, spinal, femur, tibia-fibula, tarsal bones, metatarsus, humerus and digits from front and hind limbs. In the bones, P, Ca, Mg, Mn, Na, S and Zn elements were measured. The elemental contents of large bones were significantly correlated with bones weight in the case of each element. The elemental contents of phalanges were also estimated based on the large bones. The measured and the estimated elemental contents of phalanges were not different significantly based on the tibia-fibula, metatarsalis bones, front and hind limb digits. Elemental analysis based on phalanges adds a further way of use of phalanges. Frogs using their phalanges could be useful indicators in the assessment of environmental contamination.

Current and past industrial pollution leaves many traces in the environment, in particular along rivers in industrial and urban areas. The isotopic analysis of the lead found in soils and tree rings offers a kind of environmental archive for presenting a portrait of the pollutant distribution in the environment in both spatial and temporal terms. This study is an attempt to identify and compare the source of contamination found in soils and tree rings located along two rivers affected by pollution over several years. Specifically, the focus is on the pattern of lead concentrations and lead isotopic signatures (206Pb/207Pb, 208Pb/206Pb, and 206Pb/204Pb) detected in soils and tree rings located on polluted floodplains. The concentration of Pb in overbank sediments does not rise with the increasing distance downstream from the point source (mining area), suggesting that significant fluvial transport of the pollutant particles over 80 km is involved. For the soil profiles, Pb concentration levels range between 12.32 and 149.13 mg/kg, with the highest concentrations found at the base of the profiles (>1 m). For the lead isotope ratios in the soil profiles, the values obtained range from 0.851 to 0.872 (206Pb/207Pb), 2.081 to 2.111 (208Pb/206Pb), and 0.547 to 0.562 (206Pb/204Pb). The tree ring analysis of red ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh.) shows average lead concentrations of 0.63 μg/g, and the lead values of all the tree specimens range between 0.03 and 11.38 μg/g. Pb concentrations varied greatly between the specimens in selected sites and lead isotope ratios in the tree rings showed a strong variability in the time series, particularly from 1945 to 1970. The greater number of variations in the lead concentration rates and isotopic ratios suggest that many more events associated with pollution and contamination have in fact occurred in this area. The study demonstrates the utility of combining stable isotope analyses (soils and tree rings) to examine the source and dispersion of contaminant Pb in fluvial systems by providing reliable and robust indicators for the detection of environmental changes on a local and regional scale.

In this paper, the effect of nitrogen addition on the aerobic bioremediation of a diesel-contaminated soil was studied. Soil was artificially contaminated with diesel at an initial 2% concentration (on a dry soil basis). Nitrogen was added as NH₄Cl in a single load at the start of the experiment at concentration levels of 0, 100, 250, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg N/dry kg soil, and uncontaminated and unamended soil O₂ consumptions were studied. Diesel degradation was indirectly studied via measurements of O₂ consumption and CO₂ production, using manometric respirometers. Results showed that the 250 mg N/dry kg concentration resulted in the highest O₂ consumption among all runs, whereas O₂ consumption was reduced by N additions greater than 500 mg N/dry kg. Zero to 0.6 order degradation kinetics appeared to prevail, as was calculated via the oxygen consumption rates. A theoretical biochemical reaction for diesel degradation was developed, based on measurement of the final diesel concentration in one of the runs. According to the stoichiometry, the optimal N requirements to allow complete diesel degradation should be approximately 0.15 g N/g diesel degraded or 1,400 mg N/dry kg of soil, based on the initial diesel concentration used in this study. This implies that N should be added in incremental loads.

Biodegradation kinetics of 3-chlorophenol (3-CP) were studied in two identical lab scale sequencing batch reactors (SBR) fed with the compound as the sole energy and carbon source and operated at different filling time (1 h for SBR1 and 2 h for SBR2). High removal efficiency was always obtained in both SBRs in the range of feed concentration of 300-960 mg L⁻¹. Increased feed load to 1,200 mg L⁻¹ 3-CP could also be removed in SBR1 despite the presence of inhibition, whereas determined failure of SBR2. Long filling time and high biomass concentration were shown to have beneficial effect on process kinetics since they allowed to avoid substrate concentration peaks at the end of the fill phase. However, longer filling time (in the present case higher than 1 h) did not allow to select and enrich robust microbial population. The Haldane equation well fitted the kinetic test data measured in the presence of inhibition, i.e., at 960 and 1,200 mg L⁻¹ 3-CP in SBR1.

The present study determines the source of dust particles and investigates their impact on the chemical compositions of plants and soils around a cement factory in Oman within a radius of 10 km of this disturbed ecosystem. A total number of nine samples of the species of plants (Rhazya stricta), nine samples of soils, and nine samples of dust were collected and analyzed for major ions and trace elements including rare earth elements (REEs). Principal component analysis applied to the major and trace element concentrations in the dust indicated the input of at least two sources to the dust in the study area: ophiolites and cement. The REE distribution in the plants and soils revealed that the most available elements to plants originated dominantly from ophiolites rather than from cement. The contribution of cement industry is significant only in the zone located at about 0.500 to 2 km around the cement factory, whereas the contribution of ophiolites increases with distance from the cement factory.
