Temporal trends of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) measured in Arctic air are essential in understanding long-range transport to remote regions and to evaluate the effectiveness of national and international chemical control initiatives, such as the Stockholm Convention (SC) on POPs. Long-term air monitoring of POPs is conducted under the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) at four Arctic stations: Alert, Canada; Storhofði, Iceland; Zeppelin, Svalbard; and Pallas, Finland, since the 1990s using high volume air samplers. Temporal trends observed for POPs in Arctic air are summarized in this study. Most POPs listed for control under the SC, e.g. polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) and chlordanes, are declining slowly in Arctic air, reflecting the reduction of primary emissions during the last two decades and increasing importance of secondary emissions. Slow declining trends also signifies their persistence and slow degradation under the Arctic environment, such that they are still detectable after being banned for decades in many countries. Some POPs, e.g. hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and lighter PCBs, showed increasing trends at specific locations, which may be attributable to warming in the region and continued primary emissions at source. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) do not decline in air at Canada's Alert station but are declining in European Arctic air, which may be due to influence of local sources at Alert and the much higher historical usage of PBDEs in North America. Arctic air samples are screened for chemicals of emerging concern to provide information regarding their environmental persistence (P) and long-range transport potential (LRTP), which are important criteria for classification as a POP under SC. The AMAP network provides consistent and comparable air monitoring data of POPs for trend development and acts as a bridge between national monitoring programs and SC's Global Monitoring Plan (GMP).

The Spent Pot Liner (SPL) is a toxic solid waste from the aluminum industry. The genotoxic potential of SPL and its main chemical components (fluoride, cyanide, and aluminum) were evaluated on vegetal (Allium cepa L. system test) and human cells (comet assay) in the present study. Meristematic cells from A. cepa submitted to the treatments presented a reduction in the mitotic index (MI) and an increase in the frequency of chromosome alterations (CA). The SPL treatment reduced MI in 50 % when compared to the negative control. In addition, there were significant reductions in MI on the cyanide and aluminum treatments. All frequencies of chromosome alterations observed to the treatments were statistically different from control, and cyanide was the most cytogenotoxic component. The exposed cells to the treatments also increased the frequency of condensed nuclei. The comet assay on human leukocytes demonstrated that all treatments induced DNA fragmentation. Fluoride and SPL showed similar damages to the positive control (doxorubicin, UA = 259.7) and higher than the negative control (CaCl2 0.01 M, UA = 16.5). The aluminum induced intermediary damage, and the cyanide was responsible for minor damage. In conclusion, both SPL and its main components presented genotoxic and mutagenic potential on evaluated cells. Fluoride was the main genotoxic component for human leukocytes while cyanide leads the higher alterations for A. cepa meristematic cells. Thus, the storage and discard of this residue should be regulated and supervised more closely in order to reduce the risk of environmental pollution and its contact with human.

International audience | Shipping noise is a threat to marine wildlife. Grey seals are benthic foragers, and thus experience acoustic noise throughout the water column, which makes them a good model species for a case study of the potential impacts of shipping noise. We used ship track data from the Celtic Sea, seal track data and a coupled ocean-acoustic modelling system to assess the noise exposure of grey seals along their tracks. It was found that the animals experience step changes in sound levels up to ~20dB at a frequency of 125Hz, and ~10dB on average over 10 1000Hz when they dive through the thermocline, particularly during summer. Our results showed large seasonal differences in the noise level experienced by the seals. These results reveal the actual noise exposure by the animals and could help in marine spatial planning. 2

L’agriculture entre pollution atmospherique et changement climatique 全文
2016
| Interactions between climate change and air pollution in the context of agriculture. Agroecosystems are sources and sinks of atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gases. They are therefore involved in climate change and air pollution and their cross-relations. This contribution can be positive or negative. It results from complex processes, both direct and indirect, which is related to a range of topics: increase or decrease of emission and deposition, increase in fire frequency, change in plant protection etc. As for most of biological processes, there are large uncertainties and knowledge is lacking over a range of fields. However it is necessary to have a global overview of the involved processes and drivers when trying to limit the contribution of agroecosystem both to climate change and air pollution, with attention to the economic sustainability of agriculture under global change. Moreover agriculture activities refer to public policies related not only to climate change and air pollution but also water pollution or protection of the environment. These policies may interact positively or be antagonist.

| Periurban areas, zone of transition between urban and rural areas, are submitted to several sources of pollution, both gaseous and particulate. These pollutions originate from local sources such as residential sector, traffic road and agricultural activities, but also from regional ones from adjacent urban and (pseudo-)natural areas. This paper presents a synthesis of the different sources affecting air quality in periurban areas. It is clear that pollutions from anthropogenic activities cannot be fully dissociated to those from (pseudo-)natural ecosystem functioning in these areas. Finally, the atmospheric pollution issues are discussed in emphasis with periurban agriculture, already present and under development in these areas due to the development of short food supply chains and local food consumptions.

Chlordecone is a persistent organochlorine pesticide widely used in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) to control the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus. Although it was previously highlighted that chlordecone may affect the reproduction and growth of vertebrate species, little information is available on the chlordecone effects in invertebrates. The present study investigated the effects of chlordecone on a hormone and a protein having key roles in reproduction and growth of the decapod crustacean Macrobrachium rosenbergii, by measuring the 20-hydroxyecdysone concentration, vitellogenin, and vitellogenin receptor gene expression, as well as the bioconcentration of chlordecone in exposed prawns. First, the results revealed that chlordecone was accumulated in M. rosenbergii. Then, it was found that Vg and VgR gene expression were increased in male and female M. rosenbergii exposed to chlordecone for 90 and 240 days, while the 20-hydroxyecdysone concentrations were decreased. This work suggests that chlordecone accumulates in prawn tissues and could affect key molecules involved in the reproduction and the growth of the invertebrate M. rosenbergii. However, many questions remain unresolved regarding the impacts of chlordecone on growth and reproduction and the signaling pathways responsible for these effects, as well as the potential role of confounding factors present in in situ studies.
