In this study, we reported the occurrence of eight organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in the East China Sea. Forty samples were collected and analysed with a high volume solid phase extraction method (Hi-throat/Hi-volume SPE) in the early summer of 2020. All the target OPPs were detected in the surface water at one or more stations in the East China Sea, and the concentrations of ΣOPPs were in the range 0.0775–3.09 ng/L (mean: 0.862 ± 0.624 ng/L). Terbufos sulfone and fenthion were the main pollutants in this area, probably resulting from pesticide use in China and other countries. The off-shore input from coastal regions was suggested to be a major source of OPP pollution in the East China Sea, and the movement of ocean currents played an important role in their transportation because around 0.86 t OPPs passed through the Tsushima Strait from the East China Sea each month. An ecological risk assessment showed that these OPPs presented a high risk to species in the East China Sea, whereas they posed no health risk to humans under both the median and high exposure scenario.

It is challenging to retrieve hourly ground-level PM₂.₅ on a national scale in China due to the sparse site measurements and the limited coverage of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite observations. The new geostationary meteorological satellite of China, Fengyun-4A (FY-4A), provides a unique opportunity to fill this gap. In this study, the Random Forest (RF) algorithm was applied to retrieve hourly PM₂.₅ of China directly from FY-4A Top-of-Atmosphere (TOA) reflectance data. A one-year PM₂.₅ retrieval shows a strong agreement to ground-based measurements, with the averaged R² approaching 0.92, while the RMSE was only 10.0 μg/m³. An analysis of the regional differences of the performance and the dependency on satellite Viewing Zenith Angle (VZA) show that sparse measurements, high VZA, and solar zenith angle (SZA) are the primary sources of the uncertainty. The use of the FY-4A improved 17% spatial coverage compared to the Himawari-8-based PM₂.₅ retrievals, enabling full-coverage, hourly PM₂.₅ monitoring over China, and potentially could improve PM₂.₅ predictions from air quality models after data assimilation.

The potential environmental risk of glyphosate has promoted the need for decontamination of glyphosate-polluted water bodies. These treatments should be accompanied by studies of the recovery potential of aquatic communities and ecosystems. We evaluated the potential of freshwater periphyton to recover from glyphosate exposure using microcosms under laboratory conditions. Periphyton developed on artificial substrates was exposed to 0.4 or 4 mg l⁻¹ monoisopropylamine salt of glyphosate (IPA) for 7 days, followed by translocation to herbicide-free water. We sampled the community 1, 2 and 3 weeks after the transfer. Dry weight, ash-free dry weight, chlorophyll a, and periphyton abundances were analysed. The periphyton impacted with the lowest IPA concentration recovered most of the structural parameters within 7 days in clean water, but the taxonomic structure did not entirely recover towards the control structure. Periphyton exposed to 4 mg IPA l⁻¹ could not recover during 21 days in herbicide-free water, reaching values almost four times higher in % of dead diatoms and four times lower in ash-free dry weight concerning the control at the end of the study. Results suggest a long-lasting effect of the herbicide due to the persistence within the community matrix even after translocating periphyton to decontaminated water. We conclude that the exposure concentration modulates the recovery potential of IPA-impacted periphyton. The current research is the first to study the recovery in glyphosate-free water of periphyton exposed to the most commonly used herbicide in the world. Finally, we highlight the need for more studies focused on the recovery potential of freshwater ecosystems and aquatic communities after glyphosate contamination.

Ion sorption on soil and sediment has been reported to be potentially affected by bacteria which may interact both physically and chemically with solid surfaces. However, whether and how bacteria affect the sorption of inorganic phosphate (P) on soil colloids remains poorly known. Here, we comparably investigated the P sorption on four soil colloids (three highly weathered soils including two Oxisols and one Ultisol and one weakly weathered soil Alfisol) and their complexes with Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens. Batch experiments showed a notable reduction in P sorption on the colloids of highly weathered soils by the two bacteria at varying P concentrations and pHs; whereas that on the colloids of Alfisol appeared to be unaffected by the bacteria. The inhibitory effect was confirmed by both greater decline in P sorption at higher bacteria dosages and the ability of the bacteria to desorb P pre-adsorbed on the colloids. Further evidence was given by isothermal titration calorimetric experiments which revealed an alteration in enthalpy change caused by the bacteria for P sorption on Oxisol but not for that on Alfisol. The B. subtilis was more efficient in suppressing P sorption than the P. fluorescens, indicating a dependence of the inhibition on bacterium type. After association with bacteria, zeta potentials of the soil colloids decreased considerably. The decrease positively correlated with the decline in P sorption, regardless of soil and bacterium types, demonstrating that the increment in negative charges of soil colloids by bacteria probably contributed to the inhibition. In addition, scanning electron microscopic observation and the Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory prediction suggested appreciable physical and chemical interactions between the bacteria and the highly weathered soil colloids, which might be another contributor to the inhibition. These findings expand our understandings on how bacteria mobilize legacy P in soils and sediments.

Ammonia (NH₃) volatilization is one of the main pathways of nitrogen loss from cropland, resulting not only in economic losses, but also environmental and human health impacts. The magnitude and timing of NH₃ emissions from cropland fertilizer application highly depends on agricultural practices, climate and soil factors, which previous studies have typically only considered at coarse spatio-temporal resolution. In this paper, we describe a first highly detailed empirical regression model for ammonia (ERMA) emissions based on 1443 field observations across China. This model is applied at county level by integrating data with unprecedented high spatio-temporal resolution of agricultural practices and climate and soil factors. Results showed that total NH₃ emissions from cropland fertilizer application amount to 4.3 Tg NH₃ yr⁻¹ in 2017 with an overall NH₃ emission factor of 12%. Agricultural production for vegetables, maize and rice are the three largest emitters. Compared to previous studies, more emission hotspots were found in South China and temporally, emission peaks are estimated to occur three months earlier in the year, while the total amount of emissions is estimated to be close to that calculated by previous studies. A second emission peak is identified in October, most likely related to the fertilization of the second crop in autumn. Incorporating these new findings on NH₃ emission patterns will enable a better parametrization of models and hence improve the modelling of air quality and subsequent impacts on ecosystems through reactive N deposition.

Multiphase chemistry of chlorine is coupled into a 3D regional air quality model (CMAQv5.0.1) to investigate the impacts on the atmospheric oxidation capacity, ozone (O₃), as well as fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and its major components over the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region. The developed model has significantly improved the simulated hydrochloric acid (HCl), particulate chloride (PCl), and hydroxyl (OH) and hydroperoxyl (HO₂) radicals. O₃ is enhanced in the high chlorine emission regions by up to 4% and depleted in the rest of the region. PM₂.₅ is enhanced by 2–6%, mostly due to the increases in PCl, ammonium, organic aerosols, and sulfate. Nitrate exhibits inhomogeneous variations, by up to 8% increase in Shanghai and 2–5% decrease in most of the domain. Radicals show different responses to the inclusion of the multiphase chlorine chemistry during the daytime and nighttime. Both OH and HO₂ are increased throughout the day, while nitrate radicals (NO₃) and organic peroxy radicals (RO₂) show an opposite pattern during the daytime and nighttime. Higher HCl and PCl emissions can further enhance the atmospheric oxidation capacity, O₃, and PM₂.₅. Therefore, the anthropogenic chlorine emission inventory must be carefully evaluated and constrained.

To understand the fate of plastic in oceans and the interaction with marine organisms, we investigated the incorporation of (bio)polymers and microplastics in selected benthic foraminiferal species by applying FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) microscopy. This experimental methodology has been applied to cultured benthic foraminifera Rosalina globularis, and to in situ foraminifera collected in a plastic remain found buried into superficial sediment in the Mediterranean seafloor, Rosalina bradyi, Textularia bocki and Cibicidoides lobatulus. In vitro foraminifera were treated with bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) molecule to explore its internalization in the cytoplasm. Benthic foraminifera are marine microbial eukaryotes, sediment-dwelling, commonly short-lived and with reproductive cycles which play a central role in global biogeochemical cycles of inorganic and organic compounds. Despite the recent advances and investigations into the occurrence, distribution, and abundance of plastics, including microplastics, in marine environments, there remain relevant knowledge gaps, particularly on their effects on the benthic protists. No study, to our knowledge, has documented the molecular scale effect of plastics on foraminifera.Our analyses revealed three possible ways through which plastic-related molecules and plastic debris can enter a biogeochemical cycle and may affect the ecosystems: 1) foraminifera in situ can grow on plastic remains, namely C. lobatulus, R. bradyi and T. bocki, showing signals of oxidative stress and protein aggregation in comparison with R. globularis cultured in negative control; 2) DEHP can be incorporated in the cytoplasm of calcareous foraminifera, as observed in R. globularis; 3) microplastic debris, identified as epoxy resin, can be found in the cytoplasm and the agglutinated shell of T. bocki.We hypothesize that plastic waste and their associated additives may produce modifications related to the biomineralization process in foraminifera. This effect would be added to those induced by ocean acidification with negative consequences on the foraminiferal biogenic carbon (C) storage capacity.

With the widespread occurrence and accumulation of plastic waste in the world, plastic pollution has become a serious threat to ecosystem and ecological security, especially to estuarine and coastal areas. Understanding the impacts of changing nanoplastics concentrations on aquatic organisms living in these areas is essential for revealing the ecological effects caused by plastic pollution. In the present study, we revealed the effects of exposure to gradient concentrations (0.005, 0.05, 0.5 and 50 mg/L) of 75 nm polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) for 48 h on metabolic processes in muscle tissue of a bivalve, the razor clam Sinonovacula constricta, via metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis. Our results showed that PS-NPs caused dose-dependent adverse effects on energy reserves, membrane lipid metabolism, purine metabolism and lysosomal hydrolases. Exposure to PS-NPs reduced energy reserves, especially lipids. Membrane lipid metabolism was sensitive to PS-NPs with contents of phosphocholines (PC), phosphatidylethanolamines (PE) and phosphatidylserines (PS) increasing and degradation being inhibited in all concentrations. High concentrations of PS-NPs altered the purine metabolism via increasing contents of guanosine triphosphate (GTP) and adenine, which may be needed for DNA repair, and consuming inosine and hypoxanthine. During exposure to low concentrations of PS-NPs, lysosomal hydrolases in S. constricta, especially cathepsins, were inhibited while this influence was improved transitorily in 5 mg/L of PS-NPs. These adverse effects together impacted energy metabolism in S. constricta and disturbed energy homeostasis, which was manifested by the low levels of acetyl-CoA in high concentrations of PS-NPs. Overall, our results revealed the effects of acute exposure to gradient concentrations of PS-NPs on S. constricta, especially its metabolic process, and provide perspectives for understanding the toxicity of dynamic plastic pollution to coastal organisms and ecosystem.

Ice and snow in the Central Andes contain significant amounts of light-absorbing particles such as black carbon. The consequent accelerated melting of the cryosphere is not only a threat from a climate perspective but also for water resources and snow-dependent species and activities, worsened by the mega-drought affecting the region since the last decade. Given its proximity to the Andes, emissions from the Metropolitan Area of Santiago, Chile, are believed to be among the main contributors to deposition on glaciers. However, no evidence backs such an assertion, especially given the usually subsident and stable conditions in wintertime, when the snowpack is at its maximum extent. Based on high-resolution chemistry-transport modeling with WRF-CHIMERE, the present work shows that, for the month of July 2015, up to 40% of black carbon dry deposition on snow or ice covered areas in the Central Andes downwind from the Metropolitan area can be attributed to emissions from Santiago. Through the analysis of aerosol tracers we determine (i) that the areas of the Metropolitan Area where emissions matter most when it comes to export towards glaciers are located in Eastern Santiago near the foothills of the Andes, (ii) the crucial role of the network of Andean valleys that channels pollutants up to remote locations near glaciers, following gentle slopes. A direct corollary is that severe urban pollution, and deposition of impurities on the Andes, are anti-correlated phenomena. Finally, a two-variable meteorological index is developed that accounts for the dynamics of aerosol export towards the Andes, based on the zonal wind speed over the urban area, and the vertical diffusion coefficient in the valleys close to ice and snow covered terrain. Numerous large urban areas are found along the Andes so that the processes studied here can shed light on similar investigations for other glaciers-dependent Andean regions.

Ozone (O₃) is a harmful pollutant when present in the lowermost layer of the atmosphere. Therefore, the European Commission formulated directives to regulate O₃ concentrations in near-surface air. However, almost 50% of the 5068 air quality stations in Europe do not monitor O₃ concentrations. This study aims to provide a hybrid modeling system that fills these gaps in the hourly surface O₃ observations on a site scale with much higher accuracy than existing O₃ models. This hybrid model was developed using estimations from multiple linear regression-based eXtreme Gradient Boosting Machines (MLR-XGBM) and O₃ reanalysis from European regional air quality models (CAMS-EU). The binary classification of extremely high O₃ events and the 1- and 24-h forecasts of hourly O₃ were investigated as secondary aims. In this study thirteen stations in Northern Bavaria, out of which six do not monitor O₃, were chosen as test sites. Considering the computational complexity of machine learning algorithms (MLAs), we also applied two recent MLA interpretation methods, namely SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and Local interpretable model-agnostic explanations (LIME).With SHAP, we showed an increasing effect of temperature on O₃ concentrations which intensifies for temperatures exceeding 17 °C. According to LIME, O₃ concentration peaks are mainly governed by meteorological factors under dry and warm conditions on a regional scale, whereas local nitrogen oxide concentrations control base O₃ concentrations during cold and wet periods.While recently developed MLAs for the spatial estimation of hourly O₃ concentrations had a station-based root-mean-square error (RMSE) above 27 μg/m³, our proposed model significantly reduced the estimation errors by about 66% with an RMSE of 9.49 μg/m³. We also found that logistic regression (LR) and MLR-XGBM performed best in the site-scale classification and 24-h forecast of O₃ concentrations (with a station-averaged accuracy and RMSE of 0.95 and 19.34 μg/m³, respectively).
