Passive samplers are useful tools for monitoring hydrophobic, persistent, and potentially bioaccumulative contaminants in the environment. In this study, low density polyethylene passive samplers were deployed in urban-influenced and background nearshore freshwaters of northwestern Lake Ontario and analyzed for a broad range of both legacy halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs) and halogenated flame retardants (HFRs). Non-targeted analysis was conducted for screening additional halogenated substances. For most compounds, concentrations were greatest in the industrialized Hamilton Harbour and more generally at sites that have stronger influences of wastewater effluent discharges and stormwater run-off through rivers and creeks. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) remain the dominant class of HOCs in water, with dissolved-phase concentrations ranging from 10 to 4100 pg/L (ΣPCBs), followed by polybrominated diphenylethers (ΣPBDEs; 14–960 pg/L) and the organochlorine pesticides (OCPs; 22–290 pg/L). Several non-PBDE brominated flame retardants (nBFRs) and chlorinated Dechlorane-related compounds were detected, with hexabromocyclododecanes (ΣHBCDD; sum of 3 diastereoisomers) the most abundant (1.0–21 pg/L). Non-targeted screening of samples by high resolution mass spectrometry using Kendrick mass defect plots for data analysis indicated that several other halogenated compounds were present in waters at relatively high abundances compared to the flame retardants, based on semi-quantitative estimates. These included methyl-triclosan, four halogenated anisoles (2,4,6-tribromoanisole, dimethyl-trichloroanisole, pentachloroanisole, and pentachlorothioanisole), and pentachloro-aniline. Dissolved-phase methyl-triclosan was estimated to contribute up to approximately 40% of the summed target HOC concentrations. Polyethylene passive samplers provided an excellent medium for both non-targeted screening of HOCs not currently included in monitoring programs and tracking brominated and chlorinated chemicals slated for reductions in uses and emissions through international (Stockholm Convention) and binational (Great Lakes) agreements.

Wildfires may play a role in redistributing radionuclides in the environment in combination with hydrological processes such as surface runoff and soil erosion. We investigated plot-scale radionuclide wash-off at forest sites affected by wildfires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ). We also compared speciation of the washed-off radionuclides with those in previous studies conducted just after the accident in 1986. We observed the surface runoff and the radionuclide wash-off with a soil erosion plot at forest and post-fire sites during May–September 2018. In the post-fire site, 2.81 mm of surface runoff was observed in at least three flow events resulting from 285.8 mm total rainfall. The fluxes of dissolved and particulate ¹³⁷Cs were estimated as 4.9 and 161 Bq m⁻², respectively. The dissolved phase ⁹⁰Sr flux was estimated as 214 Bq m⁻². At the forest site, a single surface runoff (0.67 mm) event was generated by rainfall of 182.2 mm. The fluxes of dissolved and particulate ¹³⁷Cs wash-off values were 6.2 and 8.6 Bq m⁻², respectively. The flux of dissolved ⁹⁰Sr wash-off from the forest was estimated as 45.1 Bq m⁻². The distribution coefficient, which indicates the dissolved-particulate form of radionuclides, in the post-fire site was 30 times higher than that in the forest site, indicating the importance of particulate ¹³⁷Cs wash-off after fire in the CEZ. The entrainment coefficients for dissolved and particulate ¹³⁷Cs concentrations were around 50 times lower than those obtained in the corresponding position within the CEZ immediately after the accident in 1987. The effect of downward migration of ¹³⁷Cs over 30 years led to decreased entrainment coefficients for dissolved and particulate ¹³⁷Cs. The effect of downward migration of radionuclides was considered sufficient to indicate changes in normalized liquid and solid radionuclides wash-off entrainment coefficient and the distribution coefficient in this study.

Epidemiological studies have investigated the associations of bisphenol A (BPA) exposure with hypertension risk or blood pressure levels, but findings are inconsistent. Furthermore, the association between its alternatives bisphenol S and F (BPS and BPF) and hypertension risk are not yet known. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 1437 eligible participants without hypertension-related diseases, with complete data about blood pressure levels, hypertension diagnosis, and urinary bisphenols concentrations. Multivariable logistic and linear models were respectively applied to examine the associations of urinary bisphenols concentrations with hypertension risk and blood pressure levels. The dose-response relationship was explored by the restricted cubic spline model. Compared with the reference group of BPA, individuals in the middle and high exposure group had an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 1.30 and 1.40 for hypertension, had a 3.08 and 2.82 mm Hg higher systolic blood pressure (SBP) levels, respectively, with an inverted “U” shaped dose-response relationship. Compared with the reference group of BPS, individuals in the second and third tertile had an adjusted OR of 1.49 and 1.48 for hypertension, had a 2.61 and 3.89 mm Hg increased levels of SBP, respectively, with a monotonic curve. No significant associations of BPF exposure with hypertension risk or blood pressure levels were found. BPA and BPS exposure were suggested to be associated with increased hypertension risk and blood pressure levels, with different dose-response relationships. Our findings have important implications for public health but require confirmation in prospective studies.

Cadmium (Cd)-polluted soils were collected from wasteland, farmland, and slopeland surrounding a lead–zinc mine in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. Maize plants (the host) were inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in a dual-compartment cultivation system that included mycorrhizal and hyphal compartments as part of an AMF inoculation treatment and root and soil compartments as part of a the non-inoculation treatment. The effects of AMF on maize biomass and Cd uptake, soil aggregate composition, and Cd concentration in the interflow within two soil layers (0–20 and 20–40 cm) as well as the Cd leaching from these three Cd-polluted soils under simulated heavy rainfall (40 and 80 mm/h) were investigated. The results demonstrated that AMF led to increased maize biomass and Cd uptake. There were greater contents of total glomalin-related soil protein (T-GRSP) and >2.0 mm aggregates and lower Cd concentrations in the interflow and lower dissolved Cd leaching in the mycorrhizal and hyphal compartments than in the soil compartment. A two-way analysis of variance revealed that AMF significantly increased the contents of T-GRSP and >2.0 mm aggregates and reduced both Cd concentrations in the interflow and dissolved Cd leaching. Moreover, AMF interacted extensively with the roots and affected soil aggregate composition and Cd concentrations in the interflow. Under 40 mm/h of rainfall, the contents of T-GRSP and >2.0 mm aggregates were significantly negatively correlated with both Cd concentrations in the interflow and dissolved Cd leaching. In addition, the Cd concentrations in the interflow were significantly positively correlated with the amount of dissolved Cd leaching. Therefore, both AMF-reduced Cd concentrations in the interflow and Cd leaching from Cd-polluted soils were closely related to increased T-GRSP contents and macroaggregate proportion in the soils.

Jicama peroxidase (JP) was covalently immobilized onto functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) Buckypaper/Polyvinyl alcohol (BP/PVA) membrane and employed for degradation of methylene blue dye. The parameters of the isotherm and kinetic models are estimating using ant colony optimization (ACO), which do not meddle the non-linearity form of the respective models. The proposed inverse modelling through ACO optimization was implemented, and the parameters were evaluated to minimize the non-linear error functions. The adsorption of MB dye onto JP-immobilized BP/PVA membrane follows Freundlich isotherm model (R² = 0.99) and the pseudo 1st order or 2nd kinetic model (R² = 0.980 & 0.968 respectively). The model predictions from the parameters estimated by ACO resulted values close the experimental values, thus inferring that this approach captured the inherent characteristics of MB adsorption. Moreover, the thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption was favourable, spontaneous, and exothermic in nature. The comprehensive structural analyses have confirmed the successful binding of peroxidase onto BP/PVA membrane, as well as the effective MB dye removal using immobilized JP membrane. Compared to BP/PVA membrane, the reusability test revealed that JP-immobilized BP/PVA membrane has better dye removal performances as it can retain 64% of its dye removal efficiency even after eight consecutive cycles. Therefore, the experimental results along with modelling results demonstrated that JP-immobilized BP/PVA membrane is expected to bring notable impacts for the development of effective green and sustainable wastewater treatment technologies.

The non-magnetic capping materials are difficult to be recycled from the water bodies after their application, leading to the increase in the cost of the sediment remediation. To address this issue, a capping material, i.e., magnetic lanthanum/iron-modified bentonite (M-LaFeBT) was prepared by loading lanthanum onto a magnetic iron-modified bentonite (M-FeBT) and used to control the internal phosphorus (P) loading in this study. To determine the capping efficiency and mechanism of M-LaFeBT, the impact of M-LaFeBT and M-FeBT capping on the mobilization of P in sediments was investigated, and the stabilization of P bound by the M-LaFeBT and M-FeBT capping layers was evaluated. Results showed that M-LaFeBT possessed good magnetic property with a saturated magnetization of 14.9 emu/g, and exhibited good phosphate adsorption ability with a maximum monolayer sorption capacity (QMAX) of 14.3 mg P/g at pH 7. Moreover, M-LaFeBT capping tremendously reduced the concentration of soluble reactive P (SR-P) in the overlying water (OL-water), and the reduction efficiencies were 94.7%–97.4%. Furthermore, M-LaFeBT capping significantly decreased the concentration of SR-P in the pore water and DGT (diffusive gradient in thin films)-labile P in the profile of OL-water and sediment. Additionally, most of P bound by the M-LaFeBT capping layer (approximately 77%) was stable under natural pH and reducing conditions. The phosphate adsorption ability for M-LaFeBT was much higher than that for M-FeBT, and the QMAX value for the former was 4.86 times higher than that for the latter. M-LaFeBT capping gave rise to a higher reduction of DGT-labile concentration in the profile of OL-water and sediment than M-FeBT capping. The P adsorbed by the M-LaFeBT capping layer was more stable than that by the M-FeBT capping layer. Results of this study demonstrate that M-LaFeBT is promising for utilization as an active capping material to intercept sedimentary P release into OL-water.

Trace elements (TEs) in the insoluble particles of surface snow are less affected by melting processes and can be used as environmental proxies to reveal natural and anthropogenic emissions. Here the first comprehensive study of the 16 TEs (Al, As, Ba, Bi, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, Sr, Ti, U, V, and Zn) in insoluble particles (>0.45 μm) from surface snow samples collected at Urumqi Glacier No. 1 (UG1), Eastern Tien Shan, China, from February 2008 to January 2010 were presented. Results show that concentrations of most insoluble particulate TEs (TEs ᵢₙₛₒₗ) in the snow were higher in summer while lower in winter, due to the increasing particle inputs and melting processes. The abundances of As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in some samples were higher than those in surrounding urban soils, which might due to these TEs have further anthropogenic input beyond the already contaminated re-suspended urban soil particles and TEs were mainly enriched in particles with small grain size. Based on enrichment factor (EF) and principal component analysis (PCA), our results suggest that eight TEs (Al, Fe, Ti, Ba, Mn, Sr, U, and V) mainly came from mineral dust, while the remaining eight TEs (As, Bi, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sn, and Zn) were affected by coal combustion, mining and smelting of non-ferrous metals, traffic emissions, and the steel industry. The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model suggests that pollutants might originate from Xinjiang province, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Moreover, UG1 received more significant inputs of particle-bound pollutants in summer than in winter due to the stronger convection and the prevailing valley wind that transports pollutants from the city of Urumqi.

The fluoride-sensitive indica rice cultivar, IR-64 was subjected to NaF-treatment for 25 days, following which RNA-Seq analysis identified significant up and down regulation of 1,303 and 93 transcripts respectively. Gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis classified transcripts into groups related to ‘cellular part’, ‘membrane’, ‘catalytic activity’, ‘transporter activity’, ‘binding’, ‘metabolic processes’ and ‘cellular processes’. Analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) revealed fluoride-mediated suppression of abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis and signaling. Instead, the gibberellin-dependent pathway and signaling via ABA-independent transcription factors (TFs) was activated. Comparative profiling of selected DEGs in IR-64 and fluoride-tolerant variety, Khitish revealed significant cytoskeletal and nucleosomal remodelling, accompanied with escalated levels of autophagy in stressed IR-64 (unlike that in stressed Khitish). Genes associated with ion, solute and xenobiotic transport were strongly up regulated in stressed IR-64, indicating potential fluoride entry through these channels. On the contrary, genes associated with xenobiotic mobility were suppressed in the tolerant cultivar, which restricted bioaccumulation and translocation of fluoride. Pairwise expression profile analysis between stressed IR-64 and Khitish, supported by extensive statistical modelling predicted that fluoride susceptibility was associated with high expression of genes like amino acid transporter, ABC transporter2, CLCd, MFS monosaccharide transporter, SulfT2.1 and PotT2 while fluoride tolerance with high expression of Sweet11.

The toxicity of mercury (Hg), is generally known, and around 90% of Hg exist as methylmercury (CH₃Hg⁺) in marine organism. Mercury concentrates in sharks and whales, which are at the top of the food chain as predators to cephalopods. The concentrations of Hg in liver and muscle of blue shark, caught in Sagami Bay, and in digestive gland and mantles of Todarodes pacificus, Sepia madokai, and Uroteuthis edulis caught in East China Sea were measured and analyzed. The Hg concentrations in the sharks, squids, and cuttlefishes determined in this study were almost same as those in the other sea regions. In addition, the Hg concentration in the blue shark was higher in the muscle than in the liver. In S. madokai and U. edulis, Hg accumulated in the digestive gland but not in the mantle. Although the Hg concentration in the digestive gland of T. pacificus is lower than those of S. madkai and U edulis, Hg concentration in the mantle is critically higher. More than 90% of Hg is present as CH₃Hg⁺ in muscle of blue shark and mantle of T. pacificus. This feature is explained due to amino acids with the thiol groups and chain genes in the muscle of blue shark as well as in the mantle of T. pacificus. Myosin in the mantle of T. pacificus and blue shark enhances the stability of CH₃Hg⁺. The amount of Hg in the digestive gland of T. pacificus could be too large to store; thus, Hg is released to the mantle, whereas the nutrients in the digestive gland of T. pacificus are supplied to other tissues. It is considered that the muscle fiber of T. pacificus is strong; therefore, large amounts of myosin levels may be present in T. pacificus than in S. madokai and U. edulis.

In this study, the distribution profiles, emission characteristics, and health risks associated with 43 volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, including 15 phenols, 18 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 6 BTEX, and 4 other compounds, were determined in the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of a coking factory (plant C) and the succeeding final WWTP (central WWTP). Total phenols with a concentration of 361,000 μg L⁻¹ were the predominant compounds in the influent wastewater of plant C, whereas PAHs were the major compounds in the final effluents of both coking WWTPs (84.4 μg L⁻¹ and 30.7 μg L⁻¹, respectively). The biological treatment process in plant C removed the majority of volatile organic pollutants (94.1%–99.9%). A mass balance analysis for plant C showed that biodegradation was the main removal pathway for all the target compounds (56.6%–99.9%) except BTEX, chlorinated phenols, and high molecular weight (MW) PAHs. Chlorinated phenols and high MW PAHs were mainly removed via sorption to activated sludge (51.8%–73.2% and 60.2%–75.9%, respectively). Air stripping and volatilization were the dominant mechanisms for removing the BTEX compounds (59.8%–73.8%). The total emission rates of the detected volatile pollutants from plant C and the central WWTP were 1,640 g d⁻¹ and 784 g d⁻¹, respectively. Benzene from the equalization basins of plant C and the central WWTP corresponded to the highest inhalation carcinogenic risks (1.4 × 10⁻³ and 3.2 × 10⁻⁴, respectively), which exceeded the acceptable level for human health (1 × 10⁻⁶) recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The results showed that BaP exhibited the highest inhalation non-cancer risk, with a hazard index ratio of 70 and 30 for plant C and the central WWTP, respectively. Moreover, the excess sludge generated during wastewater treatment should also be carefully handled because it adsorbed abundant PAHs and chlorinated phenols at coking plant C (58,000 μg g⁻¹ and 3,500 μg g⁻¹) and the central WWTP (622 μg g⁻¹ and 54 μg g⁻¹).
