Assessment of airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a megacity of South China: Spatiotemporal variability, indoor-outdoor interplay and potential human health risk

Although a number of studies have assessed the occurrence of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in indoor environment, few studies have systemically examined the indoor-outdoor interplay of size-dependent particulate PAHs and potential health risk based on daily lifestyles. In the present study, size-dependent particle and gaseous samples were collected both indoors and outdoors within selected schools, offices and residences located in three districts of Guangzhou, China with different urbanization levels during the dry and wet weather seasons. Results from measurements of PAHs showed that higher total PAH concentrations occurred in residential areas than in other settings and in indoor than in outdoor environments. Compositional profiles and size distribution patterns of particle-bound PAHs were similar indoors and outdoors, predominated by 4-and 5-ring PAHs and the 0.56–1.0 μm particle fraction. Statistical analyses indicated that outdoor sources may have contributed to 38–99% and 62–100% of the variations for indoor particle-bound and gaseous PAH concentrations, respectively. Incremental life cancer risk (ILCR) from human exposure to indoor and outdoor PAHs based on different lifestyles followed the order of adults > children > adolescents > seniors. All average ILCR values for four age groups were below the lower limit of the Safe Acceptable Range (10−6). In addition, the ILCR value for adults (average: 7.2 × 10−7; 95% CI: 5.4 × 10−8‒2.5 × 10−6), estimated from outdoor air PAH levels with 24-h exposure time, was significantly higher than our assessment results (average: 5.9 × 10−7; 95% CI: 6.3 × 10−8‒1.9 × 10−6), suggesting the significance of assessing human inhalation exposure risks of indoor and outdoor PAHs in urban air based on daily lifestyles.

The catalytic hydrolysis of carbonyl sulfide (COS) and the effect of small clusters of H2O and H2SO4 have been studied by theoretical calculations. The addition of H2SO4 could increase the enthalpy change (ΔH<0) and decrease relative energy of products (relative energy<0), resulting in hydrolysis reaction changed from an endothermic reaction to an exothermic reaction. Further, H2SO4 decreases the energy barrier by 5.25 kcal/mol, and it enhances the catalytic hydrolysis through the hydrogen transfer effect. The (COS + H2SO4-H2O) reaction has the lowest energy barrier of 29.97 kcal/mol. Although an excess addition of H2O and H2SO4 increases the energy barrier, decreases the catalytic hydrolysis, which is consistent with experimental observations. The order of the energy barriers for the three reactions from low to high are as follows: COS + H2SO4-H2O < COS + H2O + H2SO4-H2O < COS + H2O+(H2SO4)2. Kinetic simulations show that the addition of H2SO4 can increase the reaction rate constants. Consequently, adding an appropriate amount of sulfuric acid promotes the catalytic hydrolysis of COS both kinetically and thermodynamically.

Nitrogen pollution has become a worldwide problem and the source identification is important for the development of pertinent control measures. In this study, isotope end members (rain, nitrogen fertilizer, untreated/treated sewage), and samples (river water discharging to Taihu lake, lake water, aquatic organisms of different trophic levels) were taken during 2010–2015 to examine their δ15N values and nutrient stoichiometry. Results indicated that phytoplankton (primary producers), which directly take up and incorporate N from the lake water, had a similar δ15N value (14.1‰ ± 3.2) to the end member of treated sewage (14.0‰ ± 7.5), and the most frequently observed δ15N value in the lake water was 8–12‰, both indicating the dominant impact of the sewage discharge. Relationship analysis between N isotope value of nitrate and nitrate concentration indicated that different N cycling existed between the algae-dominated northwest lake (NW) and the macrophyte-dominated southeast lake (SE), which is a result of both impacts of river inputs and denitrification. Our nutrient stoichiometry analysis showed that the lake water had a significantly higher N:P ratio than that of algae (p < 0.05), suggesting that N is available in excess relative to the amount demanded by the algae. The long-term trend of the socio-economic development in the watershed further confirmed that the rapid population increase and urbanization have resulted in a great change in the N loading and source proportion. We suggest that although P control is necessary in terms of eutrophication control, N pollution control is urgent for the water quality and ecological recovery for Taihu lake.

With the shift of fluorine chemical industry from developed countries to China and increasing demand for fluorine chemical products, occurrence of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in production and application areas has attracted more attention. In this study, 153 soil samples were collected from 21 cities along the urbanizing coastal area of the Bohai and Yellow Seas. PFASs in this area were relatively higher, compared with other study areas. The concentrations ranged from 2.76 to 64.0 ng g−1, and those in most sites were between 2.76 and 13.9 ng g−1, with a predominance of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Among the 21 coastal cities, contaminations of PFASs in Zibo, Nantong and Binzhou were elevated, which was likely affected by local fluorine chemical plants, equipment manufacturing and chemical industry, respectively. The total emissions of PFOA and PFOS were similar, with amount of 4431 kg and 4335 kg, respectively. Atmospheric deposition was the largest source, accounting for 93.2% of total PFOA and 69.6% of PFOS, respectively. In addition, due to application of aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) and sulfluramid, disposal of sewage sludge and stacking of solid waste, emission of PFOA and PFOS to soil was 1617 kg, accounting for 9.29% of the whole China. In general, pollution in Jiangsu, Shandong and Tianjin was more serious than those in Liaoning and Hebei, which was consistent with industrialization level and size of industrial sectors emitting PFASs.

Fungi are well associated with the degradation of hydrocarbons by the production of different enzymes, among which catalases (CBH), laccases (LCC) and peroxidases (LiP and MnP) are of immense importance. In this study, crude oil tolerance and enzyme secretions were demonstrated by rhizospheric fungal strains. Four most abundant strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of grasses growing in aged oil spill sites and identified through morphological characterization and molecular PCR-amplification of 5.8–28S ribosomal rRNA using ITS1 and ITS4 primers. These strains were subjected to crude oil tolerance test at 0–20% concentrations. Presence and transcriptase responses of putative genes lig (1–6), mnp, cbh (1.1, 1.1 and 11), and lcc encoding lignin peroxidase, manganese peroxidase, catalase, and laccase enzymes respectively were also studied in these strains using RT-PCR. In addition, activities of secreted enzymes by each strain were studied in aliquots. The strains were identified as Aspergillus niger asemoA (KY473958), Talaromyces purpurogenus asemoF (KY488463), Trichoderma harzianum asemoJ (KY488466), and Aspergillus flavus asemoM (KY488467) through sequencing and comparing the sequences’ data at NCBI BLAST search software. All the isolated strains showed tolerance to crude oil at 20% concentration, but the growth rate reduced with increasing in oil concentrations. All the isolated strains possess the tested genes and lig 1–6 gene was overexpressed in A. niger and T. harzianum while lcc and mnp genes were moderately expressed in all the four strains. Almost 145 U.mL⁻¹ of lignin and manganese peroxidase, 87 U.mL⁻¹ of catalase, and 180 U.mL⁻¹ of laccase enzymes were produced by these strains and it was also observed that these strain mostly produced studied enzymes in response to increasing crude oil concentrations. Considering the robust nature and diverse production of these catalytic enzymes by these strains, they can be exploited for various bioremediation technologies as well as other biotechnological applications.

Air pollution has been shown to be significantly associated with morbidity and mortality in urban areas, but there is lack of studies focused on extreme pollution events such as extreme dust episodes in high-density Asian cities. However, such cities have had extreme climate episodes that could have adverse health implications for downwind areas. More importantly, few studies have comprehensively investigated the mortality risks of extreme dust events for socioeconomically vulnerable populations.This paper examined the association between air pollutants and mortality risk in Hong Kong from 2006 to 2010, with a case-crossover analysis, to determine the elevated risk after an extreme dust event in a high-density city. The results indicate that PM₁₀₋₂.₅ dominated the all-cause mortality effect at the lag 0 day (OR: 1.074 [1.051, 1.098]). This study also found that people who were aged ≥ 65, economically inactive, or non-married had higher risks of all-cause mortality and cardiorespiratory mortality during days with extreme dust events. In addition, people who were in areas with higher air pollution had significantly higher risks of all-cause mortality and cardiorespiratory mortality.In conclusion, the results of this study can be used to target the vulnerable among a population or an area and the day(s) at risk to assist in health protocol development and emergency planning, as well as to develop early warnings for the general public in order to mitigate potential mortality risk for vulnerable population groups caused by extreme dust events.

Municipal solid wastes (MSW) can be composted to become an organic fertilizer. However, besides plant nutrients, it can also contain high concentration of some toxic metals than can pollute agricultural soils, contaminate food, animals and human being. A greenhouse experiment was carried out for two purposes: i) to evaluate the concentrations of cadmium, copper, chromium, nickel, lead and zinc in four Brazilian MSW composts, and, ii) to know which is the best solution for extracting those metals in phytoavailable form from the composts. In order to evaluate the phytoavailability of metals, they were extracted with six chemical extractants: i) water, ii) 0.05 mol L⁻¹ Ca(NO₃)₂, iii) 0.1 mol L⁻¹ HCl, iv) 0.005 mol L⁻¹ DTPA at pH 7.3, v) 0.05 mol L⁻¹ CaCl₂ and vi) Mehlich 3 solution. In addition, lettuces were cultivated as a test plant in pots containing 1.8 kg of MSW compost as substrate. Fifty-six days later, lettuce plants were harvested. New lettuces were then planted for a second cycle, and then harvested after fifty-six days. Semi-total concentration of metals in composts and total in plants was also determined through an extraction with nitric-perchloric acid. Semi–total concentration of Cd and Pb exceeded the intervention limits from Brazil in the four studied composts, and lettuce plants were polluted by those two elements. Therefore, compost made of MSW must be characterized before being used for agricultural soils. Copper and nickel in phytoavailable were effectively extracted with the strongest chelating agents used, HCl and Mehlich 3, probably because most metal is bound to organic matter in the compost. Cadmium, chromium, lead and zinc were no efficiently extracted with any of the tested extractants.

In the efforts at controlling automobile emissions, it is important to know in what extent air pollutants from on-road vehicles could be truly reduced. In 2014 we conducted tests in a heavily trafficked tunnel in south China to characterize emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from on-road vehicle fleet and compared our results with those obtained in the same tunnel in 2004. Alkanes, aromatics, and alkenes had average emission factors (EFs) of 338, 63, and 42 mg km⁻¹ in 2014 against that of 194, 129, and 160 mg km⁻¹ in 2004, respectively. In 2014, LPG-related propane, n-butane and i-butane were the top three non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) with EFs of 184 ± 21, 53 ± 6 and 31 ± 3 mg km⁻¹; the gasoline evaporation marker i-pentane had an average EF of 17 ± 3 mg km⁻¹; ethylene and propene were the top two alkenes with average EFs of 16 ± 1 and 9.7 ± 0.9 mg km⁻¹, respectively; isoprene had no direct emission from vehicles; toluene showed the highest EF of 11 ± 2 mg km⁻¹ among the aromatics; and acetylene had an average EF of 7 ± 1 mg km⁻¹. While EFs of total NMHCs decreased only 9% from 493 ± 120 mg km⁻¹ in 2004 to 449 ± 40 mg km⁻¹ in 2014, their total ozone formation potential (OFP) decreased by 57% from 2.50 × 10³ mg km⁻¹ in 2004 to 1.10 × 10³ mg km⁻¹ in 2014, and their total secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) decreased by 50% from 50 mg km⁻¹ in 2004 to 25 mg km⁻¹ in 2014. The large drop in ozone and SOA formation potentials could be explained by reduced emissions of reactive alkenes and aromatics, due largely to fuel transition from gasoline/diesel to LPG for taxis/buses and upgraded vehicle emission standards.

The effects of ambient temperature on stroke death in China have been well addressed. However, few studies are focused on the attributable burden for the incident of different types of stroke due to ambient temperature, especially in Beijing, China. We purpose to assess the influence of ambient temperature on hospital stroke admissions in Beijing, China. Data on daily temperature, air pollution, and relative humidity measurements and stroke admissions in Beijing were obtained between 2013 and 2014. Distributed lag non-linear model was employed to determine the association between daily ambient temperature and stroke admissions. Relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) and Attribution fraction (AF) with 95% CI were calculated based on stroke subtype, gender and age group. A total number of 147, 624 stroke admitted cases (including hemorrhagic and ischemic types of stroke) were documented. A non-linear acute effect of cold temperature on ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke hospital admissions was evaluated. Compared with the 25th percentile of temperature (1.2 °C), the cumulative RR of extreme cold temperature (first percentile of temperature, −9.6 °C) was 1.51 (95% CI: 1.08–2.10) over lag 0–14 days for ischemic type and 1.28 (95% CI: 1.03–1.59) for hemorrhagic stroke over lag 0–3 days. Overall, 1.57% (95% CI: 0.06%–2.88%) of ischemic stroke and 1.90% (95% CI: 0.40%–3.41%) of hemorrhagic stroke was attributed to the extreme cold temperature over lag 0–7 days and lag 0–3 days, respectively. The cold temperature's impact on stroke admissions was found to be more obvious in male gender and the youth compared to female gender and the elderly. Exposure to extreme cold temperature is associated with increasing both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke admissions in Beijing, China.

This paper summarizes the historical and scientific foundations of the Linear No-Threshold (LNT) cancer risk assessment model. The story of cancer risk assessment is an extraordinary one as it was based on an initial incorrect gene mutation interpretation of Muller, the application of this incorrect assumption in the derivation of the LNT single-hit model, and a series of actions by leading radiation geneticists during the 1946–1956 period, including a National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Biological Effects of Atomic Radiation (BEAR) I Genetics Panel (Anonymous, 1956), to sustain the LNT belief via a series of deliberate obfuscations, deceptions and misrepresentations that provided the basis of modern cancer risk assessment policy and practices. The reaffirming of the LNT model by a subsequent and highly influential NAS Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation (BEIR) I Committee (NAS/NRC, 1972) using mouse data has now been found to be inappropriate based on the discovery of a significant documented error in the historical control group that led to incorrect estimations of risk in the low dose zone. Correction of this error by the original scientists and the application of the adjusted/corrected data back to the BEIR I (NAS/NRC, 1972) report indicates that the data would have supported a threshold rather than the LNT model. Thus, cancer risk assessment has a poorly appreciated, complex and seriously flawed history that has undermined policies and practices of regulatory agencies in the U.S. and worldwide to the present time.
