The present study aimed at exploring the sources of salinity and the link it shares with the enrichment of As (arsenic) and F- (fluoride) in the groundwater of Rachna Doab. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) were used as the measure of salinity to classify samples into three groups: TDS <1000 mg/L (freshwater), 1000–3000 mg/L (slightly saline) and 3000–10,000 mg/L (moderately saline). The stable isotope analysis (δ²H and δ¹⁸O relative to VSMOW) were used to explore the sources of salinity and a conceptual model, based on secondary data was used for comparing the current and past scenarios of groundwater salinization sources. Groundwater ion chemistry and geochemical modeling (PHREEQC) were used to develop a link between the occurrence of salinity and enrichment patterns of As and F- in the groundwater of study area. TDS, As and F- concentrations in groundwater ranged from 234 to 4557 mg/L, below detection limit to 240 μg/L and below detection limit to 3.9 mg/L, respectively. Mineral dissolution, ion exchange processes, and partial input of evaporation were identified as the factors affecting groundwater salinity in the region in accordance with the conceptual model developed based on secondary data. Groundwater salinity accounts as one of the factors that positively influence the enrichment of F- in groundwater, whereas As shows no clear relationship with saline groundwaters.

While the influence of climate change on the fate of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is becoming a topic of global concern, it has yet to be demonstrated how POPs and their transformation products in soil respond to a changing climate at the local scale. We conducted a year-long field experiment with spiked soils to investigate the impact of climate on the dissipation of γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH) and p,p’-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p’-DDT) as well as the formation of their products. Four sites along an elevational gradient on the eastern Tibetan Plateau were selected to represent four scenarios ranging from a dry and cold to a warm and humid climate. Based on the measured concentrations of the two pesticides and their transformation products, we calculated the dissipation rates of γ-HCH and p,p’-DDT in soil using two biphasic kinetic models, and the formation rates of transformation products using a mid-point rectangular approximation method. The spiked γ-HCH generally showed the expected decrease in dissipation from soils with increasing altitudes, and therefore decreasing temperature and precipitation, whereas dissipation of p,p’-DDT was influenced more by photolysis and sequestration in soil. The formation rates of the primary products of γ-HCH (i.e. γ-HCH→PeCCH and γ-HCH→TeCCH) and p,p’-DDT (i.e. p,p’-DDT→p,p’-DDE and p,p’-DDT→p,p’-DDD) indicate that a warmer and wetter climate favors dechloroelimination (anaerobic biodegradation) over dehydrochlorination (aerobic biodegradation). The significantly longer dissipation half-lives of γ-HCH at the coldest site suggests that the fate of POPs in frozen regions (e.g. polar regions) needs more attention. Overall, the fate of more volatile chemicals (e.g. γ-HCH) might be more responsive to the climate change.

In December 2019, a novel disease, coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), emerged in Wuhan, People’s Republic of China. COVID-19 is caused by a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) presumed to have jumped species from another mammal to humans. This virus has caused a rapidly spreading global pandemic. To date, over 300,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in England and over 40,000 patients have died. While progress has been achieved in managing this disease, the factors in addition to age that affect the severity and mortality of COVID-19 have not been clearly identified. Recent studies of COVID-19 in several countries identified links between air pollution and death rates. Here, we explored potential links between major fossil fuel-related air pollutants and SARS-CoV-2 mortality in England. We compared current SARS-CoV-2 cases and deaths from public databases to both regional and subregional air pollution data monitored at multiple sites across England. After controlling for population density, age and median income, we show positive relationships between air pollutant concentrations, particularly nitrogen oxides, and COVID-19 mortality and infectivity. Using detailed UK Biobank data, we further show that PM₂.₅ was a major contributor to COVID-19 cases in England, as an increase of 1 m³ in the long-term average of PM₂.₅ was associated with a 12% increase in COVID-19 cases. The relationship between air pollution and COVID-19 withstands variations in the temporal scale of assessments (single-year vs 5-year average) and remains significant after adjusting for socioeconomic, demographic and health-related variables. We conclude that a small increase in air pollution leads to a large increase in the COVID-19 infectivity and mortality rate in England. This study provides a framework to guide both health and emissions policies in countries affected by this pandemic.

A seven-year long-term comprehensive measurement of non-refractory submicron particles (NR-PM₁) in autumn and winter in Beijing from 2012 to 2018 was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the clean air actions implemented by the Chinese government in September 2013 on aerosols from different sources and chemical processes. Results showed that the NR-PM₁ concentrations decreased by 44.1% in autumn and 73.2% in winter from 2012 to 2018. Sulfate showed a much larger reduction than nitrate and ammonium in both autumn (55%) and winter (86%) and that nitrate even slightly increased by 15.8% in autumn. As a result, aerosol pollution in winter gradually changed from sulfate-rich to nitrate-rich with a sudden change after 2016 and the dominant role of nitrate in autumn was also strengthened after 2016. Among primary organic aerosol (OA) types, biomass burning OA and coal combustion OA exhibited the largest decline in autumn and winter, with reductions of 87.5% and 77.3%, respectively, while hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA) exhibited the smallest decline in both autumn (24.4%) and winter (37.1%). These significant changes in aerosol compositions were highly consistent with the much faster reduction of SO₂ (75–85%) than NOx (36–59%) and were mainly due to the clean air actions rather than the impact of meteorological conditions. What’s more, the enhanced atmospheric oxidizing capacity, which was indicated by increased O₃, altered the chemical processes of oxygenated OA (OOA), especially in autumn. Both of less-oxidized OOA (LO-OOA) and more-oxidized OOA showed elevated contributions in OA by 4% in autumn. The increased oxygen-to-carbon ratios of LO-OOA in autumn (from 0.42 to 0.58) and winter (from 0.44 to 0.52) indicated the enhanced atmospheric oxidizing capacity strengthened photochemical reactions and resulted in the increased oxidation degree of LO-OOA. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the clean air actions for air quality improvement in Beijing.

The global concern over the possible consequences of the downsizing of plastic to microplastics (MPs) and nano plastics (NPs) needs to be addressed with a new conceptual framework. The transformation of plastics to MPs and NPs can be discussed in terms of fundamental physics principles applicable to micro and nanophase matter and colloidal science principles. Further, accurate and reliable detection and characterization of MPs and NPs are crucial for an extensive understanding of their environmental and ecological impacts. The other decisive factor that can classify MPs and NPs as hazardous to existing nanomaterials is discussing the cytotoxicity study on human cell lines. The human health risk assessment that might arise from the ingestion of MPs and NPs can be addressed about contrast agents used for medical imaging. However, the lack of standard analytical techniques for MPs and NPs measurement is an emerging challenge for analytical scientists due to their complex physicochemical properties, especially in environmental samples. This review article navigates readers through the point of origin of MPs and NPs and their interdisciplinary aspects. Biomedical applications of plastics and concerns over the toxicity of MPs and NPs are further analyzed. Moreover, the analytical challenges of MPs and NPs have been discussed with critical inputs. Finally, the worldwide efforts being made for creating a common platform of discussion on a different aspect of plastic pollution were taken into account.

We investigated how sulfur (S) application prior to wheat cultivation under wheat-rice rotation influences the uptake of cadmium (Cd) in rice grown in low- and high-Cd soils. A pot experiment was conducted with four S levels (0, 30, 60, 120 mg S kg⁻¹) and two Cd rates (low and high, 0.35 and 10.35 mg Cd kg⁻¹) supplied to wheat. Part of the wheat straw was returned to the soil before planting rice, which was cultivated for 132 days. To explore the key mechanisms by which S application controlled Cd accumulation in brown rice, (1) soil pore water at the key growth stages was sampled, and dissolved Cd and S species concentrations were determined; (2) rice plant tissues (including iron plaque on the root surface) were sampled at maturity for Cd and S analysis. With increasing S level, Cd accumulation in brown rice peaked at 60 mg S kg⁻¹, irrespective of soil Cd levels. For high-Cd soils, concentrations of Cd in brown rice increased by 57%, 228%, and 100% at 30, 60, and 120 mg S kg⁻¹, respectively, compared with no S treatment. The increase in brown rice Cd by low S levels (0–60 mg kg⁻¹) could be attributed to (1) the S-induced increase in soil pore water sulfate increasing the Cd influx into rice roots and (2) the S-induced increase in leaf S promoting Cd translocation into brown rice. However, brown rice Cd decreased at 120 mg S kg⁻¹ due to (1) low Cd solubility at 120 mg S kg⁻¹ and (2) root and leaf S uptake, which inhibited Cd uptake. Sulfur application to wheat crop increased the risk of Cd accumulation in brown rice. Thus, applying S-containing fertilizers to Cd-contaminated paddy soils is not recommended.

Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) since their discovery have proven to be game changing molecules in alleviating abiotic stress. They individually play role in plant stress management while the pathways of stress regulation through their crosstalk remain elusive. The current study focuses on investigating the interplay of NO and H₂S signalling in the amelioration of arsenate As(V) toxicity in rice seedlings and managing its growth, photosynthesis, sucrose and proline metabolism. Results show that As(V) exposure declined fresh weight (biomass) due to induced cell death in root tips. Moreover, a diminished RuBisCO activity, decline in starch content with high proline dehydrogenase activity and increased total soluble sugars content was observed which further intensified in the presence of Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (L-NAME, an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase-like activity), and DL-propargylglycine (PAG, an inhibitor of cysteine desulfhydrase activity). These results correlate with lower endogenous level of NO and H₂S. Addition of L-NAME increased As(V) toxicity. Interestingly, addition of SNP reverses effect of L-NAME suggesting that endogenous NO has a role in mitigating As(V) toxicity. Similarly, exogenous H₂S also significantly alleviated As(V) stress, while PAG further stimulated As(V) toxicity. Furthermore, application of H₂S in the presence of L – NAME and NO in the presence of PAG could still mitigate As(V) toxicity, suggesting that endogenous NO and H₂S could independently mitigate As(V) stress.

Transition metals (TMs) (e.g. copper (Cu) and iron (Fe)) and certain organic compounds are known active constituents causing oxidative potential (OP) by inhaled ambient fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) in lung fluid. Humic-like substances (HULIS), isolated from atmospheric PM₂.₅, are largely metal-free and contain mixtures of organics that are capable of complexing TMs. TMs and HULIS co-exist in the water-extractable part of PM₂.₅. In this work, we used a solid phase extraction procedure to isolate the water-soluble TMs in the hydrophilic fraction (HPI) and HULIS in the hydrophobic fraction (HPO) and carried out this isolation procedure to a set of 32 real-world PM₂.₅ samples collected in Beijing and Hong Kong, China. We quantified two OP endpoints, namely hydroxyl radical formation (denoted as OP•OH) and ascorbic acid depletion (denoted as OPAA), by the two fractions separately and combined, as well as by the bulk water-soluble aerosols. OP•OH and OPAA were well-correlated in both separate fractions and their combined mixtures or bulk water-soluble aerosols. OP by HPI far exceeded that by HPO. On a per unit PM₂.₅ mass basis, the Hong Kong samples on average had a higher OPAA and OP•OH than the Beijing samples due to more water-soluble Cu. For HPI, Cu was a dominant OP•OH and OPAA contributor (>80%), although water-soluble Fe was present at a concentration approximately one order of magnitude higher. Suppression effects on OP•OH were observed through comparing the OP of the bulk water-soluble aerosol with that of HPI. Our work reveals the importance of monitoring PM₂.₅ chemical compositions (especially water-soluble redox active metals). Furthermore, we demonstrate the need to consider metal-organic interactions when evaluating the aggregate OP by PM₂.₅ from individual components or apportioning OP by PM₂.₅ to specific chemical components.

Tributyltin (TBT) is a widely used organotin compound around the world and was frequently detected in surface waters, which would pose risk to aquatic organisms. However, the mechanisms of TBT-induced toxicity is not full clear. The present study investigated the effects of the tributyltin (TBT) on the blood parameters, immune responses and thyroid hormone system in zebrafish. Fish were exposed to sublethal concentrations of TBT (10 ng/L, 100 ng/L and 300 ng/L) for 6 weeks. The effects of long-term exposure to TBT on blood parameters (NH3, ammonia; GLU, glucose; TP, total proteins; CK, creatine kinase; ALT, alanine aminotransferase; AST, aspartate aminotransferase), immune responses (Lys, lysozyme; IgM, immunoglobulin M) and some indexes related thyroid hormone system (T3, 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine; T4, thyroxine) were measured in zebrafish, as well as the expression of genes related to immune responses and thyroid hormone system. Based on the results, the physiological-biochemical responses was significantly enhanced with an increase in TBT concentration, reflected by the abnormal blood indices, dysregulation of endocrine system and immunotoxicity in zebrafish under TBT stress. The present study greatly extends our understanding of adverse effects of TBT on aquatic organisms.

The current review reports the importance and significance of cattle solid waste in vermicomposting technology concerning biowaste pollution in the environment. Needy increasing population evokes livestock production resulting in the massive generation of livestock wastes, especially cattle dung. Improper disposal and handling of biowastes originating from agriculture, industries, forests, rural and urban areas lead to nutrient loss, environmental pollution and health risks. Among the organic waste disposal methods available, vermicomposting is regarded as an environmentally friendly technology for bioconversion of agricultural, industrial, rural and urban generated organic solid wastes which are serving as reservoirs of environmental pollution. In vermicomposting of organic wastes, cattle dung plays a central role in mineralization, nutrient recovery, earthworm and microbial activity leading to vermifertilizer production. Even though the vermicomposting studies use cattle dung invariably as an amendment material, its importance has not been reviewed to highlight its central role. Hence, the present review mainly emphasizes the key role played by cattle dung in vermicomposting. Vermiconversion of cattle dung alone and in combination with other biowaste materials of environmental concern, mechanisms involved and benefits of vermicompost in sustainable agriculture are the major objectives addressed in the present review. The analysis reveals that cattle dung is indispensable amendment material for vermicomposting technology to ensure agricultural and environmental sustainability by reducing pollution risks associated with biowastes on one hand, and nutrient-rich benign vermifertilizer production on the other hand.
