Seasonal nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics during benthic clam and suspended mussel cultivation 全文

Effects of suspended mussel and infaunal clam cultivation on sediment characteristics, and benthic organic and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus fluxes were compared in a shallow coastal lagoon. The two species had different impacts on sediment features, but both created “hotspots” of nutrient fluxes with annual N and P regeneration rates being 4.9 and 13.5 (mussel) and 4.5 and 14.9 (clams) fold greater than those of unfarmed control sediments. Mussel farming also caused considerable nutrient regeneration within the water column with the mussel ropes contributing ∼25% of total inorganic N and P production and at times dominating the sediments (e.g. 95% of SRP production in summer and 45% of DIN production in winter). Such nutrient regeneration rates seriously question the proposal that suspension-feeding bivalves act as a eutrophication buffer, especially during summer when nutrient regeneration rates are maximal, but other nutrient sources (freshwater run-off and unfarmed sediments) are at their lowest.

Environmental monitoring is performed on seafloor communities since these organisms are relatively stationary and integrate the environmental conditions over many years. Standard practices involve sampling by grab. Epifaunal taxa, often missed by grab sampling, are likely to have different ecological functions. We investigate how current environmental assessments represent the benthic community as a whole by comparing taxonomic and functional components sampled by grabs and epibenthic trawls. Faunal communities sampled by trawl (filtrating or predator, epifauna) and grab (infaunal, detrivore) differs widely by sampling distinct functional components, and these may be expected to respond to different human-induced stressors. Neither component appears to be a good surrogate for the community as a whole. We suggest a benthic monitoring by combining both techniques. Sustainable ecosystem functioning is intimately tied to the health of both components of the benthic community, and is recognized as an important goal by signatories of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The Salt-water River watershed is one of the major river watersheds in the Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. Water quality and sediment investigation results show that the river water contained high concentrations of organics and ammonia–nitrogen, and sediments contained high concentrations of heavy metals and organic contaminants. The main pollution sources were municipal and industrial wastewaters. Results from the enrichment factor (EF) and geo-accumulation index (Igₑₒ) analyses imply that the sediments can be characterized as heavily polluted in regard to Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn, and Cu. The water quality analysis simulation program (WASP) model was applied for water quality evaluation and carrying capacity calculation. Modeling results show that the daily pollutant inputs were much higher than the calculated carrying capacity (1050kgday⁻¹ for biochemical oxygen demand and 420kgday⁻¹ for ammonia–nitrogen). The proposed watershed management strategies included river water dilution, intercepting sewer system construction and sediment dredging.

Major hurricanes Emily and Wilma hit the Mexican Caribbean in 2005. Changes in trace metals in the seagrass Thalassiatestudinum prior to (May 2004, 2005) and following passage of these hurricanes (May, June 2006) were determined at four locations along a ∼130km long stretch of coast. Before the hurricanes, essential metals were likely limiting and concentrations of potentially toxic Pb were high in a contaminated lagoon (27.5μgg⁻¹) and near submarine springs (6.10μgg⁻¹); the likely sources were inland sewage disposal or excessive boat traffic. After the hurricanes, Pb decreased to 2.0μgg⁻¹ in the contaminated lagoon probably through flushing. At the northern sites, essential Fe increased >2-fold (from 26.8 to 68.3μgg⁻¹ on average), possibly from remobilization of anoxic sediments or upwelling of deep seawater during Wilma. Thus, hurricanes can be beneficial to seagrass beds in flushing toxic metals and replenishing essential elements.

Since 1990s, various booster biocides have been increasingly used as substitutes of organotins. However, knowledge about their toxicities on tropical/sub-tropical marine species is significantly lacking. This study comprehensively investigated the acute toxicities of copper, tributyltin (TBT), and five commonly used booster biocides including Irgarol, diuron, zinc pyrithione (ZnPT), copper pyrithione (CuPT) and chlorothalonil on the growth or survival of 12 marine species in which eight of them are native species of subtropical Hong Kong. We found that Irgarol was more toxic than TBT on the growth of autotrophic species. The toxicity of CuPT was comparable to that of TBT on almost all test species, while it showed higher toxicity than TBT on medaka fish larvae. As the usage of these biocides is expected to further increase worldwide, accurate assessments of their ecological risks are required for better informed decision on their management. This study provided useful datasets for such purposes.

The in vitro interference of fibrate (gemfibrozil, clofibrate, clofibric acid), anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen, diclofenac), and anti-depressive (fluoxetine, fluvoxamine) drugs with key enzymatic activities—C17,20-lyase and CYP11β-involved in the synthesis of active androgens in gonads of male carp have been investigated. Among the tested compounds, fluvoxamine and fluoxetine were the strongest inhibitors of C17,20-lyase and CYP11β enzymes, with IC50s in the range of 321–335μM and 244–550μM, respectively. To our knowledge this is the first report on the interaction of pharmaceutical compounds with enzymatic systems involved in the synthesis of oxy-androgens. As oxy-androgens are known to influence spermatogenesis and stimulate reproductive behavior and secondary sexual characteristics in male fish, this work highlights the need for further investigating these endpoints when designing specific in vivo studies to assess the endocrine disruptive effect of pharmaceuticals in fish.

To rapidly quantify infectious enteroviruses polluting the coastal seawaters, a newly developed integrated cell culture and reverse transcription quantitative PCR (ICC-RT-qPCR) assay was used to identify the contamination by enteroviruses in winter seawater samples of Bohai Bay, Tianjin, China. The gene copies of enteroviral 5′UTRs correlated to the initial inoculum numbers across the concentration range of 0.05–500PFUmL⁻¹ (correlation coefficient (R²) was 0.9667). ICC-qPCR revealed that five of seven samples (70.4%) were positive for infectious enteroviruses. The concentration of enteroviruses was estimated at 0.2–21PFUL⁻¹. The result demonstrated that the contamination of enteroviruses in this coastal area may constitute a potential public health risk. This study established a practical assay for widespread monitoring studies of aquatic environments for viral contamination and provided meaningful data for human waterborne viral risk assessment.

The marine environment continues to be adversely affected by tributyltin (TBT) release from maritime traffic. Therefore the concentrations of TBT, dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) were measured in barnacles, mussels and fish along the Eastern Aegean coastline. The average concentrations of TBT ngSng⁻¹ were found to be 235 in fish, 116 in mussels and 635 in barnacles. The highest concentrations of TBT, DBT and MBT were observed in the barnacles which had been sampled in marinas and harbors. All mussels sampled showed values of TBT+DBT, which were below the “tolerable average residue level (TARL)” as currently accepted. This indicates a lack of risk to the consumer. However, 7 out of the 15 fish sampled displayed TBT+DBT levels above the TARL, which indicates that a fish consumer group may be at risk. Barnacles have high potential as biomonitors for the presence of organotin in the Aegean Sea.

In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs at 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, 10mg/L or control) from fertilization to free swimming stage. Hatchability, survival, and malformation rate were not affected by TiO₂ NPs at these exposure levels. However, larval swimming parameters, including average and maximum velocity and activity level were significantly affected by TiO₂ NPs. Co-exposure to either the glutathione precursor, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), or the glutathione synthesis inhibitor, buthionine sulfoximine (BSO), did not significantly alter the behavioral effects resulting from TiO₂ NPs, suggesting that other factor(s) besides oxidative stress may contribute to the behavioral toxicity of TiO₂ NPs. Our study also demonstrated that the behavioral endpoints were more sensitive than the others (e.g., hatchability and survival) to detect toxicity of TiO₂ NPs on developing fish.

Perchlorate is a widespread contaminant in the aquatic environment. In the present work, the expressions of deiodinase enzymes (d1, d2, and d3) and sodium iodide symporter (nis) genes were determined after larval and adult rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) exposed to 5 and 50μg/L perchlorate for 21days. The results showed that deflation of swim bladder development was observed in larvae at 50μg/L perchlorate treatment. An up-regulation of the d2 and nis mRNA levels were observed in the larve and in brain of adults. Meanwhile the expressions of d3 mRNA levels were significantly down-regulated in the liver. These results indicate the changes in d2, nis, and d3 mRNA expression brings about increased outer-ring deiodination, idodine uptake, and a further decrease of inner-ring deiodination, respectively reflecting auto-regulation of hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis in adult after perchlorate exposure. The larval fish development could be affected by perchlorate at environmentally relevant concentrations.
