An Exploratory Study of Particulate PAHs in Low-Polluted Urban and Rural Areas of Southwest Spain: Concentrations, Source Assignment, Seasonal Variation and Correlations with Other Air Pollutants 全文

A set of 72 PM₁₀ samples from low-polluted urban and rural locations belonging to the regional air monitoring network of Extremadura (Spain) were collected in a 1 year sampling period. Sample pre-treatment and analytical determination by gas chromatography–ion trap mass spectrometry were optimised and validated for the analysis of the priority 16 US Environmental Protection Agency polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The influence of meteorological conditions (temperature, relative humidity and solar radiation) and other atmospheric pollutants (O₃, NO₂, SO₂, PM₁₀) has been covered in detail and Pearson correlation test were used for this purpose. Spatial distribution of particulate PAHs was evaluated and the comparison with other European sites was also established. Possible emission sources were identified and assigned by using molecular diagnostic criteria.

Arsenic and heavy metal (specifically Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) uptake, translocation, and accumulation in ten native plant species spontaneously growing in soils polluted by mining activities were studied, with a focus on future phytoremediation work in polluted soils. Plant and soil samples were collected in the vicinity of the Mónica mine (NW Madrid, Spain). Soil analysis showed the ability of native plants for growing in soils with high concentration levels of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, and especially As. From these elements, the highest percentage of extractable elements was found for Cd and the lowest for Pb. A highly significant correlation was observed between total and extractable element concentrations in soils, except for Cu, indicating that total concentration is the most relevant factor for element mobility in these soils. Extractable elements in soils were better correlated with concentrations in plants than total elements in soils; thus, extraction methods applied are suitable to estimate the element phytoavailable fraction in soils, which depends on the plant species and not only on the element mobility in soils. High element concentrations were found in the aboveground parts of Corrigiola telephiifolia (As and Pb), Jasione montana (Cd and Zn), and Digitalis thapsi (As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn). However, considering the translocation and accumulation factors, together with the concentration levels found in roots and aboveground parts, only C. telephiifolia could be considered a Pb accumulator and an As hyperaccumulator plant, which could be used for future phytoremediation work in soils polluted with As.

The effect of chronic high groundwater nitrate loading on riparian forests is poorly understood. The growth patterns of northern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis) and related plant–soil processes were examined at four riparian sites in southern Ontario, Canada which have similar vegetation, soils, and hydrology but have differed in adjacent land use for >60 years. Fertilized cropland at two riparian sites produced groundwater-fed surface flows with high mean NO3–N concentrations of 9 and 31 mg l−1, whereas mean concentrations were <0.5 mg l−1 at two control sites down slope from forest. Tree-ring analysis at the two nitrate-rich sites indicated a positive growth trend in 1980–2004 and an absence of a positive growth trend in the 1945–1970 period that preceded high rates of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer use on cropland. However, a significant increase in growth also occurred in 1980–2004 at the two control riparian sites suggesting that high groundwater nitrate inputs did not influence tree growth. Cedar foliar and litter N content did not differ significantly between the high nitrate and control sites. Litter decomposition rates measured by the litterbag technique at a nitrate-enriched and control site were similar. Litter from a high nitrate and a control site produced a similar rate of potential denitrification in lab incubations of riparian surface peat. This study indicates that prolonged nitrate inputs in groundwater did not increase nitrogen uptake and growth of white cedar or stimulate decomposition and denitrification as a result of changes in the quality of plant material. In the absence of anthropogenic nitrate inputs, riparian wetland soils are typically high in ammonium and low in nitrate, and as a consequence, white cedar may have a limited ability to utilize nitrate.

Recently, specific air quality problems have been detected in the northern region of Portugal. The nitrogen oxide (NO₂) annual limit value has been surpassed at several air quality monitoring stations in the northern region, and according to European legislation, air quality plans must be designed and implemented to reduce those levels. The analysis of the air quality data from the stations concerning NO₂ exceedances indicates that traffic is responsible for an increase of more than 40 % compared with the urban background value. Specific measures to reduce NOx emissions have been selected and are related not only mainly to the traffic sector but also to the industrial and residential combustion sectors. The main objective of this study is to investigate the impact of the selected measures on the ambient levels of NO₂ in northern Portugal using a numerical modelling tool—The Air Pollution Model (TAPM). TAPM was applied over the study region using a 120 × 120-km² simulation domain and a spatial resolution of 4.8 × 4.8 km². The entire year of 2010 was simulated and was set as the base year to analyse the impact of the selected measures. Two scenarios have been defined and simulated: the base situation, which considers current NOx emissions, and the reduction scenario for which NOx emissions were re-estimated considering the implementation of the measures. The modelling results demonstrate a decrease of 4–5 μg m⁻³ in the annual NO₂ levels in the study region. Moreover, the implementation of the selected measures will allow compliance with the NO₂ annual limit values in three of the five air quality stations that measured levels surpassing those established by legislation. This situation demands additional measures that should be implemented at the local level and that particularly focus on the traffic sector.

Safe drinking water is a luxury to approximately 800 million people worldwide. The number of people without access to clean water has been reduced, thanks to technologies like the biosand filter (BSF), an intermittently operated household scale slow sand filter. The BSF outlet (control diameter 0.5â³) was modified in this study by reducing the outlet diameter (0.37â³ and 0.25â³) to determine the effects of hydraulic retention time on removal rates. Filters were dosed with 20Â L of spiked lake water daily and observed for pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), fecal coliforms (FC), turbidity, nitrate, nitrite, sulfate, and ammonia until initial flow rates dropped below 0.2Â L/min. Consistent with previous studies, the average turbidity was reduced to below 1Â NTU; the average DO was reduced by 45Â %. No significant difference was observed between the modified BSFs and the control BSF. Removal efficiency of FC was not significantly different between the modified BSFs (93.3Â % and 91.9Â %) and the control BSF (89.6Â %). Mean FC reduction during the startup period (17Â days) was significantly greater in the modified 0.25â³ BSF when compared with the control during the same time period. After the first 17Â days of the experiment, the average reduction efficiency of all filters was >97Â %. While source water was below guideline values for nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and sulfate during the course of the experiment, total nitrogen reduction was observed. The reduction indicates that the plastic BSF is capable of accomplishing limited denitrification during the filtering process.

In the present paper, the Eulerian–Lagrangian localized adjoint method (ELLAM) formulation developed by Younes et al. (Advances in Water Resources 29:1056–1074, 2006) is combined with the sequential noniterative approach to accurately simulate 2D multicomponent reactive transport in saturated/unsaturated porous media. The performance and accuracy of the developed model, named ELLAM_REACT, are compared against those of an existing numerical model based on a combination of discontinuous Galerkin and multipoint flux approximation methods (DGMPFA_REACT). Three studied test cases, dealing with reactive transport in saturated and unsaturated porous media and involving chemical reactions with only aqueous species or both fixed and aqueous species, show the superiority of the ELLAM_REACT model compared to the DGMPFA_REACT model.

Incidental losses of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) to a surface waterbody originate from direct losses during land application of fertilizer, or where a rainfall event occurs immediately thereafter. Another source is the soil. One way of immobilising DRP in runoff before discharge to a surface waterbody, is to amend soil within the edge of field area with a high phosphorus (P) sequestration material. One such amendment is iron ochre, a by-product of acid mine drainage. Batch experiments utilising two grassland soils at two depths (topsoil and sub-soil), six ochre amendment rates (0, 0.15, 1.5, 7.5, 15 and 30 g kg−1 mass per dry weight of soil) and five P concentrations (0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg L−1) were carried out. A proportional equation, which incorporated P sources and losses, was developed and used to form a statistical model. Back calculation identified optimal rates of ochre amendment to soil to ameliorate a specific DRP concentration in runoff. Ochre amendment of soils (with no further P inputs) was effective at decreasing DRP concentrations to acceptable levels. A rate of 30 g ochre kg−1 soil was needed to decrease DRP concentrations to acceptable levels for P inputs of ≤10 mg L−1, which represents the vast majority of cases in grassland runoff experiments. However, although very quick and sustained metal release above environmental limits occurred, which makes it unfeasible for use as a soil amendment to control P release to a waterbody, the methodology developed within this paper may be used to test the effectiveness and feasibility of other amendments.

A rapid, simple, sensitive and cost-effective analytical method has been standardised to determine the residues of imidacloprid and thiamethoxam in soil. This method does not require any cleanup with costly sorbents. The recoveries of imidacloprid and thiamethoxam obtained in this no-cleanup method were on par with the protocol involving primary–secondary amine-based cleanup. This method requires less volume of solvent (20 mL of acetonitrile/sample) and is suitable for high throughput analyses involving large number of samples. The limit of quantification of the method was 0.01 μg/g. Dissipation kinetics of imidacloprid and thiamethoxam in the soils of sugarcane ecosystem was studied by adopting this rapid method. The half-life of imidacloprid and thiamethoxam was 9.07 and 6.22 days when applied at 70 and 100 g a.i./ha, respectively. The dissipation of both the neonicotinoids followed first-order kinetics with good fit.

Natural clinoptilolite was modified with hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride, a cationic surfactant, and then melt-mixed with polypropylene hollow fibres to produce polymer composites with adsorptive properties. The performance of the fabricated composites was evaluated by optimizing experimental parameters such as surfactant loading, contact time, pH and initial concentration for the adsorptive removal of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) and ortho-nitrophenol (o-NP). Based on the fourier transmission infrared spectra and scanning electron microscopy micrographs of as-received and surfactant-modified clinoptilolite, the modification of natural clinoptilolite was attained. The composites showed enhanced adsorption capability for TCP over o-NP with removal efficiencies of 84% and 46%. Loading the clinoptilolite with surfactant concentrations beyond 8Â mM reduced the adsorption capacity. The removal of TCP and o-NP was found to depend critically on the pH of the solution, and the optimum ranges were 4–6 and 2–6 for compounds, respectively. The adsorption dynamics were determined with first- and second-order kinetics models, and the adsorption system for TCP and o-NP followed the first-order kinetics. Adsorption isotherm analysis revealed that the adsorption equilibrium data obeyed/fit the Freundlich isotherm.

In order to assess the use of magnetic methods to study vertical migration behavior of metal pollutants in natural soils, a controlled experiment was performed near Belle River, Ontario, Canada. The soil at the site consists primarily of clay-rich glacial till overlain by localized alluvium. Twenty PVC tubes (16″ × 8″) were inserted vertically into the ground as test capsules. Magnetite powder (<5 μm) was distributed on the surface of the soil inside ten tubes (10 grams/tube) to simulate anthropogenic contamination, while the other ten were used as controls. While the surficial magnetic susceptibility (MS) remained fairly stable in controls, decreases of 15–60% were observed in contaminated soil tubes. Post-test MS profiles from soil cores in contaminated tubes show that the magnetic signal is strongest at depths between 4 and 6 cm. Magnetic measurements and chemical analysis (using SEM-EDS) on soil layers with enhanced magnetic signal indicate the presence of iron containing particles, likely magnetite. Overall, the results suggest that magnetite powder migrated vertically downwards at a rate of ∼14 cm/year over the four month period, probably as a result of rainwater infiltration. Such magnetic methods and chemical analytical techniques are useful in the investigation of migration of metal pollutants and the potential depth of soil contamination.
