Smoky coal burning is a predominant manner for heating and cooking in most rural areas, China. Air pollution is associated with the risk of atherosclerosis, however, the link between indoor air pollution induced by smoky coal burning and atherosclerosis is not very clear. Therefore, we designed a cross-sectional study to evaluate the association of long-term exposure to smoky coal burning pollutants with the risk of atherosclerosis. 426 and 326 participants were recruited from Nangong, China and assigned as the coal exposure and control group according to their heating and cooking way, respectively. The indoor air quality (PM2.5, CO, SO₂) was monitored. The association between coal burning exposure and the prevalence of atherosclerosis was evaluated by unconditional logistic regression analysis, adjusted for confounding factors. The inflammatory cytokines mRNAs (IL-8, SAA1, TNF-α, CRP) expression in whole blood were examined by qPCR. People in the coal exposure group had a higher risk of carotid atherosclerosis compared with the control (risk ratio [RR], 1.434; 95% confidence interval [95%CI], 1.063 to 1.934; P = 0.018). The association was stronger in smokers, drinkers and younger (<45 years old) individuals. The elevation of IL-8 (0.24, 95%CI, 0.06–0.58; P < 0.05), CRP (0.37, 95%CI, 0.05–0.70; P < 0.05), TNF-α (0.41, 95%CI, 0.14–0.67; P < 0.01) mRNAs expression in whole blood were positively related to coal exposure. Our results suggested long-term exposure to smoky coal burning emissions could increase the risk of carotid atherosclerosis. The potential mechanism might relate that coal burning emissions exposure induced inflammatory cytokines elevation which had adverse effects on atherosclerotic plaque, and then promoted the development of atherosclerosis.

High water level fluctuations (WLFs) lead to periodic drying and re-inundation of sediments in the littoral area of eutrophic lakes. In this study, a series of littoral sediment cores were dried for different periods (5–30 d) and rewetted for 48 h. The sediment cores that dried for 30 d were then re-inundated for 90 d. The exchanges of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) across the sediment–water interface (SWI) and the mechanisms were studied. The results showed that ammonium nitrogen (NH4+–N) fluxes increased after 5–25 d of drying, which was followed by an obvious decrease after 30 d of drying. The decreased NH4+–N fluxes remained at low levels during the 90 d re-inundation period. The soluble reactive P (SRP) fluxes decreased significantly after 15 d of drying. However, further re-inundation increased the SRP fluxes to their initial levels. The decreased water content and porosity, the oxidation of the sediment during drying, and the associated transformations of the N and P fractions in the sediment from drying to re-inundation influenced the exchanges of NH4+–N and SRP across the SWI. The decrease of labile NH4+–N in the sediment during drying was non-reversible, while the transformations between redox sensitive P (Fe-P) and aluminum-bound P were more likely to be reversible from drying to re-inundation. The increase of Fe-P during drying and dissolution of Fe-P during the re-inundation were responsible for the development of SRP fluxes from drying to re-inundation. Therefore, the periodic drying and re-inundation of the littoral eutrophic sediments reduced the release of NH4+–N but accelerated the release of SRP from the sediment. This should be given more consideration for the remediation and management of eutrophication in the lake and other similar lakes with high WLFs.

A field study was conducted to clarify sources of atmospheric black carbon and related carbonaceous components at Rishiri Island, Japan. We quantified equivalent black carbon (eBC) particle mass and the absorption Ångström exponent (AAE), atmospheric CO and CH₄, in addition to levoglucosan in total suspended particles, a typical tracer of biomass burning. Sixteen high eBC events were identified attributable to either anthropogenic sources or biomass burning in Siberia/China. These events were often accompanied by increases of co-emitted gases such as CH₄ and CO. Specifically, we observed pollution events with elevated eBC, AAE, levoglucosan, and CH₄CO slope in late July 2014, which were attributed to forest fires in Siberia by reference to the FLEXPART model footprint and fire hotspots. In autumn, drastic increases of eBC, AAE, and levoglucosan were observed, accompanied by an eBC–CO slope of >15 ng m⁻³/ppb, resulting from long-range transport of emissions from extensive burning of crop residue on the Northeast China Plain. Other than the sources of fossil fuel combustion in China and forest fires in Siberia, we report for the first time that pollution events in northern Japan are caused by crop residue burning in China. This study elucidated valuable information that will improve understanding of the effects of biomass burning in East Asia on atmospheric carbonaceous components.

Crops are prone to various types of stress, such as caused by heavy metals, drought and pest/disease, during their life cycle. Heavy metal stress in crops poses a serious threat to crop quality and human health. However, differentiating between heavy metal and non-heavy metal stress presents a great challenge, since responses to environmental stress in crops are complex and uncertain, with different stressors possibly triggering similar canopy reflectance responses. This study aims to infer the occurrence probability of heavy metal stress (i.e., Cd stress) on a regional scale by integrating satellite-derived vegetation index and spatio-temporal characteristics of different stressors with a Bayesian method. The study area is located in the Hunan Province, China. Seven scenes of Sentinel-2 satellite images from 2016 to 2017 were collected, as well as Cd concentrations in the soil. First, the probability of rice being stressed was screened using the normalized difference red-edge index (NDRE) at all the growth stages of rice. Further, the stressed rice was used as input, along with the coefficients of spatio-temporal variation (CSTV) derived from NDRE, for a Bayesian method to infer rice exposed to Cd pollution. The results demonstrated that NDRE was a sensitive indicator for assessing stress levels in rice crops. The CSTV with a threshold of 2.7 successfully detected rice under Cd as well as abrupt stress on a regional scale. A high map accuracy for Cd induced stress in rice was achieved with an accuracy of 81.57%. This study suggests that vegetation index obtained from satellite images can assist in capturing crop stress, and that the used Bayesian method can be very useful for distinguishing a specific stressor in crops by incorporating temporal-spatial characteristic of different stressors in crops into satellite-derived vegetation index.

We investigated the profiles and levels of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid (PFCA) contamination in Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) from the North Pacific Ocean. The mean concentrations of PFCAs containing 8 to 14 carbon atoms (C8–C14) in edible Pacific cod muscle ranged from 216 to 670 pg g⁻¹ wet weight in the Northeast Pacific Ocean (Seattle, Vancouver, Alaska, and Russia), from 819 to 1710 pg g⁻¹ wet weight in Japanese coastal waters (Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Tottori, and Shimane), and from 288 to 892 pg g⁻¹ wet weight in Korean waters (Sokcho, Busan, and Yeosu). These results indicate there are geographical differences in the distribution of PFCAs. The long-chain PFCAs (C9–C14) contributed 96% of the total PFCA concentration across Japan, whereas they contributed only 33% of the total PFCA concentration in the USA and Canada. Long-chain PFCA concentrations in cod samples collected in Japanese and Korean waters were about three to four times those in samples from the USA, Canada, and Russia. Because seafood is considered an important dietary source of PFCAs, high concentrations of long-chain PFCAs in Pacific cod from Japanese and Korean waters may affect human dietary exposure and blood concentrations of long-chain PFCAs.

Humic acids (HAs) have been shown to dominate the photodegradation of steroid estrogens in natural waters. Nevertheless, how the photosensitizing ability of HAs relates to their structural and optical characteristics remains largely unknown. In this study, 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) was selected as a model compound to study to what extent easily-measurable characteristics of HAs might be used to predict their photosensitization potency. HAs were extracted from sediments of two different sources, and then subjected to structural and optical properties characterization using elemental analyzer, UV–vis spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Photochemical experiments show that the HAs from the two sources can effectively meditate EE2 photodegradation. Although with drastically different structural and optical properties, the photosensitizing ability of these HAs towards EE2 can be well described by simple linear regressions using a spectroscopic index, the spectral slope ratio (SR). This optical indicator is correlated with various physicochemical properties of HAs, including the molecular weight, lignin content, charge-transfer interaction potential, photobleaching extent and sources. No universal prediction model could be established for predicting EE2 photodegradation kinetics on the basis of SR, but in specific waters SR could be a powerful indictor for predicting the EE2 photodegradation sensitized by HAs.

Nitrogen (N) fertilizer application and atmospheric N deposition will profoundly affect greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions, especially nitrous oxide (N₂O) and methane (CH₄) fluxes and ecosystem respiration (Rₑ, i.e. CO₂ emissions). However, the impacts of long-term N inputs and the often associated N-induced soil acidification on GHG fluxes in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, especially temperate grasslands, are still uncertain. An in situ experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of long-term (13-years) N addition on N₂O and CH₄ fluxes and Rₑ from a temperate grassland in Inner Mongolia, northeast China, from April 2017 to October 2018. Soil pH values in the 0–5 cm layer receiving 120 (N₁₂₀) and 240 (N₂₄₀) kg N ha⁻¹ decreased from 7.12 to 4.37 and 4.18, respectively, after 13 years of N inputs. Soil CH₄ uptake was significantly reduced, but N₂O emission was enhanced significantly by N addition. However, N addition had no impact on Rₑ. Structural Equation Modeling indicated that soil NH₄⁺-N content was the dominant control of N₂O emissions, but with less effect of the decreasing pH. In contrast, CH₄ uptake was generally controlled by soil pH and NO₃⁻-N content, and Rₑ by forb biomass. The measured changes in N₂O and CH₄ fluxes and Rₑ from temperate grassland will have a profoundly impact on climate change.

Xu, Zhixiang | Zheng, Xianyao | Xia, Xueshan | Wang, Xiaoxia | Luo, Nao | Huang, Bin | Pan, Xuejun
Tamoxifen has been applied widely in the treatment of estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer. The impact of low concentrations of 17β-estradiol (E2) (a pervasive environmental pollutant) on its effectiveness was studied in vitro using an MCF-7 cell line. Cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and apoptosis were studied along with cell cycle progression, reactive oxygen species generation and mitochondrial membrane potentials repression. The signaling pathways involved were identified. Typical concentrations of E2 in the environment (10⁻¹⁰ to 10⁻⁸ M) were observed to promote cell growth and protect MCF-7 cells from tamoxifen's cytotoxicity. Cell migration, invasion, cell cycle progression and apoptosis all involved in reducing tamoxifen's cytotoxicity. E2 at environmental concentrations induced PI3K/Akt and MAPK/ERK signal transduction through the estrogen receptor pathways to affect cell proliferation. Taken together, the results explain how E2 in the environment may attenuate the efficacy of tamoxifen in ER-positive breast cancer therapy. They provide considerable support for E2's adverse effects on human health and cancer management.

Increasing attention has been devoted to the adverse effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on aquatic environments, such as water, sediment and sludge. To date, few studies have investigated the bio-accumulative characteristics of EDCs in different tissues of diverse wild freshwater fish species and their combined impacts on human health. Five EDCs were investigated in the muscle, liver, gill and, especially, gonad of three fish species collected from the Xiangjiang River, southern China. Carnivorous Siniperca Chuatsi or omnivorous Cyprinus Carpio accumulated higher contents of bisphenol A (BPA) and estrone than herbivorous Parabramis Pekinensis in muscle. Furthermore, 4-n-nonylphenol and estrone were found at higher levels and more frequently in the liver, implying that the liver played an important role in basic metabolism for accumulation, biotransformation and excretion of EDCs. Highest concentrations of BPA found in the gonad revealed that the BPA may pose a serious threat to the reproductive system of aquatic organisms. The mean liver/muscle concentration ratios of 4-n-nonylphenol, BPA, estrone and 17α-ethynyl estradiol confirmed the prolonged exposure of the fish to these EDCs. In addition, the relationships between the fish sizes and the EDC concentrations analyzed by Pearson correlation analysis implied that the bioaccumulation of diethylstilbestrol and BPA increased with the growth of Parabramis Pekinensis, and there was a balance between the uptake rate and elimination rate of EDCs in Siniperca Chuatsi and Cyprinus Carpio. Most importantly, the cumulative impacts of combined EDCs on human health by fish consumption were evaluated. The total estradiol equivalent quantity of estrogens was higher than that of phenols. Also, based on the results of the Monte-Carlo simulation, the 95th percentile values of the total estimated daily intakes from consuming the three freshwater fish species from the Xiangjiang River were higher than the acceptable daily intake.

A scientific campaign was undertaken along the Western sector of the Mediterranean Sea in the summer 2015 (26th Jun to 13th Jul), with the goal of gathering information about organic contaminants affecting marine aerosol over the Italian seas and with a special focus on changes in composition due to sources. 24 PM₁₀ atmospheric samples in total were chemically characterized, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aliphatic hydrocarbons (n-alkanes) and phthalate esters. Contemporarily, regulated gaseous toxicants (i.e. ozone, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide) and meteorological parameters were recorded. Samplings were carried out inshore in front of harbors (N = 7) and along the cruise, both during the vessel shipping (N = 11, transects) and at its stops offshore (N = 6). Total PAH concentrations ranged from 0.03 to 1.94 ng/m³ and raised close to harbors and coastal sites, confirming that continental sources were responsible for the strong increase of pollution levels there compared to offshore. The percent composition and diagnostic ratio rates of PAHs were different for harbors, while transects were in agreement with offshore stops, possibly due to the different impact of pollution sources. n-Alkanes (C₂₁C₃₈) and the corresponding carbon preference index rates (CPI) were assessed; their values ranged 8.7–90 ng/m³ and 1.1–2.9 respectively, which suggested that fossil fuel combustion was the dominant source, though biogenic emission could contribute. Alkyl phthalates revealed wide variability in concentrations among aerosol samples. Moreover, long-range atmospheric transport and particle ageing effect induced by photo-oxidants were important factors controlling the composition of organic aerosols in the Mediterranean Sea air.
