Between 1920 and 1967, approximatively 8200 tons of ammunition waste were dumped into some Swiss lakes. This study is part of the extensive historical and technical investigations performed since 1995 by Swiss authorities to provide a risk assessment. It aims to assess whether explosive monitoring by passive sampling is feasible in lake-bottom waters. Polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS) and Chemcatcher were first calibrated in a channel system supplied with continuously refreshed lake water spiked with two nitroamines (HMX and RDX), one nitrate ester (PETN), and six nitroaromatics (including TNT). Exposure parameters were kept as close as possible to the ones expected at the bottom of two affected lakes. Sixteen POCIS and Chemcatcher were simultaneously deployed in the channel system and removed in duplicates at 8 different intervals over 21 days. Sorbents and polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were separately extracted and analyzed by UPLC-MS/MS. When possible, a three-compartment model was used to describe the uptake of compounds from water, over the PES membrane into the sorbent. Uptake of target compounds by sorbents was shown not to approach equilibrium during 21 days. However, nitroaromatics strongly accumulated in PES, thus delaying the transfer of these compounds to sorbents (lag-phase up to 9 days). Whereas sampling rate (RS) of nitroamines were in the range of 0.06–0.14 L day⁻¹, RS of nitroaromatics were up to 10 times lower. As nitroaromatic accumulation in PES was integrative over 21 days, PES was used as receiving phase for these compounds. The samplers were then deployed at lake bottoms. To ensure that exposure conditions were similar between calibration and field experiments, low-density polyethylene strips spiked with performance reference compounds were co-deployed in both experiments and dissipation data were compared. Integrative concentrations of explosives measured in the lakes confirmed results obtained by previous studies based on grab sampling.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) has become increasingly recognized as a disruptor of the reproductive endocrine process and behavior of wild birds. However, there is no evidence that ALAN directly disrupt the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, and no information on the effects of different ALAN intensities on birds. We experimentally tested whether ALAN affects reproductive endocrine activation in the HPG axis of birds, and whether this effect is related to the intensity of ALAN, in wild tree sparrows (Passer montanus). Forty-eight adult female birds were randomly assigned to four groups. They were first exposed to a short light photoperiod (8 h light and 16 h dark per day) for 20 days, then exposed to a long light photoperiod (16 h light and 8 h dark per day) to initiate the reproductive endocrine process. During these two kinds of photoperiod treatments, the four groups of birds were exposed to 0, 85, 150, and 300 lux light in the dark phase (night) respectively. The expression of the reproductive endocrine activation related TSH-β, Dio2 and GnRH-I gene was significantly higher in birds exposed to 85 lux light at night, and significantly lower in birds exposed to 150 and 300 lux, relative to the 0 lux control. The birds exposed to 85 lux had higher peak values of plasma LH and estradiol concentration and reached the peak earlier than birds exposed to 0, 150, or 300 lux did. The lower gene expression of birds exposed to 150 and 300 lux reduced their peak LH and estradiol values, but did not delay the timing of these peaks compared to the control group. These results reveal that low intensity ALAN accelerates the activation of the reproductive endocrine process in the HPG axis, whereas high intensity ALAN retards it.

This work present aims to evaluate the effect of a conventional wastewater treatment process on the number of nanoparticles, and the role of nanoparticles as a carrier of antibiotics. A set of methods based on asymmetrical flow field flow fractionation coupled with multi-angle light scattering to separate and quantify nanoparticles in real wastewater was established. The characterization of nanoparticles was conducted by transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, UV–visible spectrophotometer and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy. The adsorption of different sizes of nanoparticles separated from the real wastewater for four targeted antibiotics (sulfadiazine, ofloxacin, tylosin and tetracycline) was studied. The results show that the number of nanoparticles were increased in the wastewater treatment process and the size range between 60 and 80 nm was predominant in wastewater samples. The nanoparticles were mainly composed of O, Si, Al and Ca elements and organic components were in the size range of 0–10 nm. Targeted antibiotics were dominantly adsorbed onto nanoparticles with 60–80 nm size range at each stage. The concentrations of tetracycline adsorbed on nanoparticles were surprisingly increased in the end of the treatment process, while ofloxacin and tylosin had the completely opposite phenomenon to tetracycline. The pH and ionic strength definitely affected the aggregation of nanoparticles and interaction with the antibiotics. It is of great significance to give insights into nanoparticle-antibiotic assemblages for the effective treatment and avoiding the water risks due to nanoparticles’ ubiquitous and their risks of carrying antibiotics.

Hydrocarbons contamination and hypoxia are two stressors that can coexist in coastal ecosystems. At present, few studies evaluated the combined impact of these stressors on fish physiology and behavior. Here, we tested the effect of the combination of hypoxia and petrogenic hydrocarbons on the anti-predator locomotor performance of fish. Specifically, two groups of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were exposed to clean water (Ctrl) or oil-contaminated water (Oil). Subsequently, fish of both groups were placed in normoxic (norx) or hypoxic (hyp) experimental tanks (i.e. four groups of fish were formed: Ctrl norx, Ctrl hyp, Oil norx, Oil hyp). In these tanks, escape response was elicited by a mechano-acoustic stimulus and recorded with a high speed camera. Several variables were analyzed: escape response duration, responsiveness (percentage of fish responding to the stimulation), latency (time taken by the fish to initiate a response), directionality (defined as away or toward the stimulus), distance-time variables (such as speed and acceleration), maneuverability variables (such as turning rate), escape trajectory (angle of flight) and distancing of the fish from the stimulus. Results revealed (i) effects of stressors (Ctrl hyp, Oil norx and Oil hyp) on the directionality; (ii) effects of Oil norx and Oil hyp on maneuverability and (iii) effects of Oil hyp on distancing. These results suggest that individual stressors could alter the escape response of fish and that their combination could strengthen these effects. Such an impact could decrease the probability of prey escape success. By investigating the effects of hydrocarbons (and the interaction with hypoxia) on the anti-predator behavior of fish, this work increases our understanding of the biological impact of oil spill. Additionally, the results of this study are of interest for oil spill impact evaluation and also for developing new ecotoxicological tools of ecological significance.

Preoxidation of As(III) to As(V) is required for the efficient removal of total arsenic in the treatment of wastewater. In this work, the electro-Fenton oxidation of As(III) with a high efficiency was successfully achieved by using the system of the stainless steel net (SSN) coating with reduced graphene oxide (RGO@SSN) as the cathode and stainless steel net (SSN) as the sacrificial anode. The RGO@SSN was synthesized by electrophoretic deposition-annealing method. The carbon disorder and defects of RGO resulted from the remained oxygen-containing functional groups facilitated the electrocatalytically active sites for two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). A high concentration (up to 1000 μmol/L) of H₂O₂ was in-situ produced through two-electron oxygen reduction reaction of electro-catalysis, and then served as the electro-Fenton reagent for the oxidation of As(III). HO generated by H₂O₂ participating the electro-Fenton reaction or decomposed at the surface of RGO@SSN cathode at acid condition endowed the strong oxidizing ability for As(III). The electro-Fenton equipped with RGO@SSN cathode has a promising application in the oxidation and removal of organic or inorganic pollutants in wastewater.

Global concern about floating marine debris and its fundamental role in shaping coastal biodiversity is growing, yet there is very little knowledge about debris-associated rafting communities in many areas of the world's oceans. In the present study, we examined the encrusting assemblage on different types of stranded debris (wood, plastic, glass, and metal cans) along the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf. In total, 21 taxa were identified on 132 items. The average frequency of occurrence (±SE) across all sites and stranded debris showed that the barnacle Amphibalanus amphitrite (68.9 ± 1.1%), the oyster Saccostrea cucullata (40.9 ± 0.7%), the polychaete Spirobranchus kraussii (27.3 ± 0.5%), green algae (22 ± 0.5%) and the coral Paracyathus stokesii (14.4 ± 0.7%) occurred most frequently. Relative substratum coverage was highest for A. amphitrite (44.3 ± 2.7%), followed by green algae (14.4 ± 1.5%), Spirobranchus kraussii (9.3 ± 1.3%), Saccostrea cucullata (7.6 ± 1.3%) and the barnacle Microeuraphia permitini (5.8 ± 0.9%). Despite the significant difference in coverage of rafting species on plastic items among different sites, there was no clear and consistent trend of species richness and coverage from the eastern (Strait of Hormuz) to the western part of the Persian Gulf. Some rafting species (bryozoans and likely barnacles) were found to be non-indigenous species in the area. As floating marine debris can transport non-indigenous species and increase the risk of bio-invasions to this already naturally- and anthropogenically-stressed water body, comprehensive monitoring efforts should be made to elucidate the vectors and arrival of new invasive species to the region.

We investigated the profiles and levels of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid (PFCA) contamination in Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) from the North Pacific Ocean. The mean concentrations of PFCAs containing 8 to 14 carbon atoms (C8–C14) in edible Pacific cod muscle ranged from 216 to 670 pg g⁻¹ wet weight in the Northeast Pacific Ocean (Seattle, Vancouver, Alaska, and Russia), from 819 to 1710 pg g⁻¹ wet weight in Japanese coastal waters (Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Tottori, and Shimane), and from 288 to 892 pg g⁻¹ wet weight in Korean waters (Sokcho, Busan, and Yeosu). These results indicate there are geographical differences in the distribution of PFCAs. The long-chain PFCAs (C9–C14) contributed 96% of the total PFCA concentration across Japan, whereas they contributed only 33% of the total PFCA concentration in the USA and Canada. Long-chain PFCA concentrations in cod samples collected in Japanese and Korean waters were about three to four times those in samples from the USA, Canada, and Russia. Because seafood is considered an important dietary source of PFCAs, high concentrations of long-chain PFCAs in Pacific cod from Japanese and Korean waters may affect human dietary exposure and blood concentrations of long-chain PFCAs.

Biodegradation assays involve both biodegradation and analytical processes which can be affected by systematic errors, among others. These errors can affect all the environmentally relevant parameters related to biodegradability, enantioselectivity (in the case of chiral compounds), kinetic parameters and persistence of chemicals. However, such impacts have never been well-characterized. In this work, calculations and models used for a long time are studied by simulating systematic errors at the 5% level, which affect independently the analytical calibration step and the biodegradation process. The impact of these errors is also compared with those obtained from an alternative approach: recently proposed equations and a novel model (a Monod modified version) developed in this work. All simulations are compatible with an environmentally relevant pollutant concentration. The results suggest a high degree of minimization (or even cancelation) of the systematic error impact using the alternative approach respect to the conventional one. These findings can be interpreted either in view of achiral or chiral pollutants. The present work can have a positive impact in the area of risk assessment of new pollutants and hazardous materials.

Rice consumption is one of the primary sources of arsenic (As) exposure as the grains contain relatively higher concentration of inorganic As. Abundant studies on the ability of iron (Fe) plaque in hampering As uptake by plants has been reported earlier. However, little is known about its role in the mitigation of As mediated oxidative damage in rice plants. The present study highlights the effect of As and Fe co-supplementation on growth response, oxidative stress, Fe uptake related enzymes and nutrient status in rice varieties. Eight different Indica rice varieties were screened and finally four varieties (Varsha, Jaya, PB-1 and IR-64) were selected for detailed investigations. Improved germination and chlorophyll/protein levels during As+Fe co-exposure indicate healthier plants than As(III) treated ones. Interestingly Fe was found act both as an antagonist and also as a synergist of As treatments. It acted by reducing As translocation and improving the nutritional levels and enhancing the oxidative stress. Fe uptake related enzymes (nitrite reductase and ferric chelate reductase) and phytosiderophores analysis revealed that Fe supplementation can reduce its deficiency in rice plants. Morpho-biochemical, oxidative stress and nutrient analysis symbolizes higher tolerance of PB-1 towards As, while Varsha being most sensitive, efficiently combated the As(III) stress in the presence of Fe.

Despite their ecological and socioeconomic importance, mangroves are among the most threatened tropical environments in the world. In the past two decades, the world's mangrove degradation and loss were estimated to lie between an 35% and >80%. However, appropriate bioindicators for assessing the impact of external factors, and for differentiating polluted from unpolluted areas are still scarce. Here, we determine the physicochemical profiles of the soils of two mangroves, one exposed to and one not exposed to anthropogenic factors. By metagenomic analysis based on 16S rRNA, we generated the bacterial diversity profiles of the soils and estimated their functional profiles. Our results showed that the two examined mangrove forests differed significantly in the physicochemical properties of the soils, especially regarding organic carbon, phosphorus and metal content, as well as in their microbial communities, which was likely caused by anthropogenic pollution. The physicochemical differences between the soils explained 76% of the differential bacterial composition, and 64% depended solely on gradients of phosphorus, metal ions and potassium. We found two genera JL-ETNP-Z39 and TA06 exclusively in polluted and non-polluted mangroves, respectively. Additionally, the polluted mangrove was enriched in Gemmatimonadetes, Cyanobacteria, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Acidobacteria, and Nitrospirae. A total of 77 genera were affected by anthropic contamination, of which we propose 33 as bioindicators; 26 enriched, and 7 depleted upon pollution.
