The diurnal variation, gas-particle partitioning, health risks, and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in a northern basin city of China in winter, 2020. The mean concentrations of particulate and gaseous PAHs were 87.90 ng m⁻³ and 69.65 ng m⁻³, respectively, and their concentrations were considerably enhanced during the domestic heating period. The relationship between the gas-particle partitioning coefficient of PAHs (KP) and subcooled liquid vapor pressure of PAHs (PL⁰) indicated organic absorption as the mechanism for this partitioning. However, the dual sorption model confirmed adsorption onto elemental carbon (EC). The health risks indicated by several equivalent parameters showed an important health effect of PAHs, especially of particulate PAHs bound onto PM₂.₅ during the heating period. Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) were also studied as an auxiliary parameter to evaluate the health impact of PAHs. According to the diagnostic ratios of PAHs and PMF model results, petroleum volatilization and coal combustion were the dominant sources of particulate PAHs during the non-heating and heating periods, respectively. The source apportionment results can help efficiently control PAHs and their health risks.

Tire-derived particles and polyethylene (PE) debris co-exist in estuaries and potentially deteriorate water quality. Chemicals can be emitted from tire-derived particles and resorb to PE debris. However, there was lack of information about the interaction (e.g., sorption and desorption) between tire-derived chemicals and PE debris. By combining batch sorption and desorption experiments along with in situ field deployment of PE sheets, we examined the utility of benzothiazoles (BTZs) sorbed in PE as suitable markers of tire-derived inputs. The sorptive characteristics and PE-water partition coefficients (often designated as Kₚₑw) of selected tire-derived marker candidates, i.e., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), benzothiophenes (BTPs) and BTZs, were measured. Moderately polar BTPs and BTZs (except for 2-(4-morpholinyl) benzothiazole) reached equilibrium within 2–8 days, compared to 20 days for nonpolar PAHs. The measure Kₚₑw values and octanol-water partition coefficients of PAHs and BTZs were linearly correlated with each other (r² > 0.80; p < 0.05). The desorption potentiality of PAHs and BTZs from tire particles is consistent with the hydrophilic properties of the target chemicals, while desorption ratios of BTZs and PAHs are 25–87% and <20%, respectively. Samplers with PE sheets as the sorbent phase were deployed in Hailing Bay, an urbanized estuary in South China, to measure concentrations of PAHs, BTPs and BTZs. Benzothiazoles sorbed in PE samples were associated with the massive utilization of automobile tires, while PAHs were linked to the boat maintenance facilities and BTPs were not detected in any tire particle and field PE samples. Therefore sorbed BTZs in PE can potentially serve as chemical markers of tire-derived inputs to estuaries.

Trace elements contamination in soil has aroused global concern nowadays, but the efficient, multifunctional, and economically viable method still remains a major challenge. In this research study, a sulfide Fe₃O₄ coated biochar composite (S/Fe-BC) has been synthesized successfully and applied to As(III)/Pb(II) co-contaminated soil. The immobilization efficiency of S/Fe-BC (2%) for the two elements exceeded 90%, and could ensure the synchronous and efficient immobilization in a wide range of pH (4.0–8.0). The TCLP-As and Pb amounts were sharply dropped after 28 days of stabilization; Meanwhile, a majority of exchangeable and carbonate-bound fractions of As and Pb were transferred into the less accessible residuals. Compared with Fe₃O₄ coated BC, the good immobilization performance of S/Fe-BC was mainly related to the enhancement of specific surface area, improvement of ionic exchange process, followed by the increase of Pb(II) precipitation and As(III) oxidation. Furthermore, competitive and synergistic effects were observed. In depth characterization analyses revealed the simultaneous immobilization mechanisms involving the adsorption, precipitation (Pb(OH)₂, PbSO₄, and PbS), co-precipitation (PbFeAsO₄(OH)), and oxidation. Conclusively, outstanding performance of S/Fe-BC composite is considered as a good multifunctional potential candidate for the immobilization of trace elements from a soil system.

Cyclists can be easily exposed to traffic-related pollutants due to riding on or close to the road during commuting in cities. PM₂.₅ has been identified as one of the major pollutants emitted by vehicles and associated with cardiopulmonary and respiratory diseases. As routing has been suggested to reduce the exposures for cyclists, in this study, PM₂.₅ was monitored with low-cost sensors during commuting periods to develop models for identifying low exposure routes in three Asian cities: Taipei, Osaka, and Seoul. The models for mapping the PM₂.₅ in the cities were developed by employing the random forest algorithm in a two-stage modeling approach. The land use features to explain spatial variation of PM₂.₅ were obtained from the open-source land use database, OpenStreetMap. The total length of the monitoring routes ranged from 101.36 to 148.22 km and the average PM₂.₅ ranged from 13.51 to 15.40 μg/m³ among the cities. The two-stage models had the standard k-fold cross-validation (CV) R² of 0.93, 0.74, and 0.84 in Taipei, Osaka, and Seoul, respectively. To address spatial autocorrelation, a spatial cross-validation approach applying a distance restriction of 100 m between the model training and testing data was employed. The over-optimistic estimates on the predictions were thus prevented, showing model CV-R² of 0.91, 0.67, and 0.78 respectively in Taipei, Osaka, and Seoul. The comparisons between the shortest-distance and lowest-exposure routes showed that the largest percentage of reduced averaged PM₂.₅ exposure could reach 32.1% with the distance increases by 37.8%. Given the findings in this study, routing behavior should be encouraged. With the daily commuting trips expanded, the cumulative effect may become significant on the chronic exposures over time. Therefore, a route planning tool for reducing the exposures shall be developed and promoted to the public.

The fate and behavior of radioactive cesium (Cs) in the water environment are of great concern. The involvement of bacteria regarding their accumulation capability for this element is the most fundamental factor that needs to be clarified even for exploring the interactions between many environmental factors that involve together in governing the transport and distribution of Cs. As the first systematical study that aimed to evaluate the accumulation capability of environmental bacteria for Cs, bacteria in the sediment of a freshwater reservoir and coastal water environment were isolated and multiplied for contact experiment with Cs under different temperature conditions (5, 25, and 35 °C). The accumulation concentration of Cs in bacteria from freshwater sediment varied in 3.95 × 10⁻⁶ to 5.68 × 10⁻⁴ng-Cs/cell, and that from coastal sediment in 1.52 × 10⁻⁶ to 7.41 × 10⁻⁴ng-Cs/cell, indicating obvious differences among bacterial species. Bacteria of coastal sediment possessed higher accumulation capability for Cs than bacteria from freshwater sediment, and temperature dependency was confirmed for bacteria from coastal sediment. The findings of this study have great reference value for better understanding and controlling the fate and behavior of radioactive Cs associated with bacteria in the water environment.

Rapid economic growth, industrialization, and urbanization have caused frequent air pollution events in East Asia over the last few decades. Recently, aerosol data from geostationary satellite sensors have been used to monitor ground-level particulate matter (PM) concentrations hourly. However, many studies have focused on using historical datasets to develop PM estimation models, often decreasing their predictability for unseen data in new days. To mitigate this problem, this study proposes a novel real-time learning (RTL) approach to estimate PM with aerodynamic diameters of <10 μm (PM₁₀) and <2.5 μm (PM₂.₅) using hourly aerosol data from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) and numerical model outputs for daytime conditions over Northeast Asia. Three schemes with different weighting strategies were evaluated using 10-fold cross-validation (CV). The RTL models, which considered both concentration and time as weighting factors (i.e., Scheme 3) yielded consistent improvement for 10-fold CV performance on both hourly and monthly scales. The real-time calibration results for PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅ were R² = 0.97 and 0.96, and relative root mean square error (rRMSE) = 12.1% and 12.0%, respectively, and the 10-fold CV results for PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅ were R² = 0.73 and 0.69 and rRMSE = 41.8% and 39.6%, respectively. These results were superior to results from the offline models in previous studies, which were based on historical data on an hourly scale. Moreover, we estimated PM concentrations in the ocean without using land-based variables, and clearly demonstrated the PM transport over time. Because the proposed models are based on the RTL approach, the density of in-situ monitoring sites could be a major uncertainty factor. This study identified that a high error occurred in low-density areas, whereas a low error occurred in high-density areas. The proposed approach can be operated to monitor ground-level PM concentrations in real-time with uncertainty analysis to ensure optimal results.

Bacteria play crucial roles in the biogeochemical cycle of arsenic (As) and selenium (Se) as these elements are metabolized via detoxification, energy generation (anaerobic respiration) and biosynthesis (e.g. selenocysteine) strategies. To date, arsenic and selenium biomineralization in bacteria were studied separately. In this study, the anaerobic metabolism of As and Se in Shewanella sp. O23S was investigated separately and mixed, with an emphasis put on the biomineralization products of this process. Multiple analytical techniques including ICP-MS, TEM-EDS, XRD, Micro-Raman, spectrophotometry and surface charge (zeta potential) were employed. Shewanella sp. O23S is capable of reducing selenate (SeO₄²⁻) and selenite (SeO₃²⁻) to red Se(-S)⁰, and arsenate (AsO₄³⁻) to arsenite (AsO₃³⁻). The release of H₂S from cysteine led to the precipitation of AsS minerals: nanorod AsS and granular As₂S₃. When As and Se oxyanions were mixed, both As–S and Se(-S)⁰ biominerals were synthesized. All biominerals were extracellular, amorphous and presented a negative surface charge (−24 to −38 mV). Kinetic analysis indicated the following reduction yields: SeO₃²⁻ (90%), AsO₄³⁻ (60%), and SeO₄²⁻ (<10%). The mix of SeO₃²⁻ with AsO₄³⁻ led to a decrease in As removal to 30%, while Se reduction yield was unaffected (88%). Interestingly, SeO₄²⁻ incubated with AsO₄³⁻ boosted the Se removal (71%). The exclusive extracellular formation of As and Se biominerals might indicate an extracellular respiratory process characteristic of various Shewanella species and strains. This is the first study documenting a complex interplay between As and Se oxyanions: selenite decreased arsenate reduction, whereas arsenate stimulated selenate reduction. Further investigation needs to clarify whether Shewanella sp. O23S employs multi-substrate respiratory enzymes or separate, high affinity enzymes for As and Se oxyanion respiration.

During hydraulic fracturing, wastewaters - termed flowback and produced water (FPW) - are created as a by-product during hydrocarbon extraction. Given the large volumes of FPW that a single well can produce, and the history of FPW release to surface water bodies, it is imperative to understand the hazards that hydraulic fracturing and FPW pose to aquatic biota. Using rainbow trout embryos as model organisms, we investigated impacts to cardio-respiratory system development and function following acute (48 h) and sub-chronic (28-day) FPW exposure by examining occurrences of developmental deformities, rates of embryonic respiration (MO₂), and changes in expression of critical cardiac-specific genes. FPW-exposed embryos had significantly increased rates of pericardial edema, yolk-sac edema, and tail/trunk curvatures at hatch. Furthermore, when exposed at three days post-fertilization (dpf), acute 5% FPW exposures significantly increased embryonic MO₂ through development until 15 dpf, where a switch to significantly reduced MO₂ rates was subsequently recorded. A similar trend was observed during sub-chronic 1% FPW exposures. Interestingly, at certain specific developmental timepoints, previous salinity exposure seemed to affect embryonic MO₂; a result not previously observed. Following acute FPW exposures, embryonic genes for cardiac development and function were significantly altered, although at termination of sub-chronic exposures, significant changes to these same genes were not found. Together, our evidence of induced developmental deformities, modified embryonic MO₂, and altered cardiac transcript expression suggest that cardio-respiratory tissues are toxicologically targeted following FPW exposure in developing rainbow trout. These results may be helpful to regulatory bodies when developing hazard identification and risk management protocols concerning hydraulic fracturing activities.

Little is known about the main sources of ambient particulate matter (PM) in the 22 Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) countries. We designed this study to systematically review all published and unpublished source apportionment (SA), identification and characterization studies as well as emission inventories in the EMR. Of 440 articles identified, 82 (11 emission inventory ones) met our inclusion criteria for final analyses. Of 22 EMR countries, Iran with 30 articles had the highest number of studies on source specific PM followed by Pakistan (n = 15 articles) and Saudi Arabia (n = 8 papers). By contrast, there were no studies in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Djibouti, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Approximately 72% of studies (51) were published within a span of 2015–2021.48 studies identified the sources of PM₂.₅ and its constituents. Positive matrix factorization (PMF), principal component analysis (PCA) and chemical mass balance (CMB) were the most common approaches to identify the source contributions of ambient PM. Both secondary aerosols and dust, with 12–51% and 8–80% (33% and 30% for all EMR countries, on average) had the greatest contributions in ambient PM₂.₅. The remaining sources for ambient PM₂.₅, including mixed sources (traffic, industry and residential (TIR)), traffic, industries, biomass burning, and sea salt were in the range of approximately 4–69%, 4–49%, 1–53%, 7–25% and 3–29%, respectively. For PM₁₀, the most dominant source was dust with 7–95% (49% for all EMR countries, on average). The limited number of SA studies in the EMR countries (one study per approximately 9.6 million people) in comparison to Europe and North America (1 study per 4.3 and 2.1 million people respectively) can be augmented by future studies that will provide a better understanding of emission sources in the urban environment.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant rhizosphere microbes reportedly enhance plant tolerance to abiotic stresses and promote plant growth in contaminated soils. The co-contamination of soil by heavy metals (e.g., Cd) and rare earth elements (e.g., La) represents a severe environmental problem. Although the influence of AMF in the phytoremediation of contaminated soils is well documented, the underlying interactive mechanisms between AMF and rhizosphere microbes are still unclear. We conducted a greenhouse pot experiment to evaluate the effects of AMF (Claroideoglomus etunicatum) on maize growth, nutrient and metal uptake, rhizosphere microbial community, and functional genes in soils with separate and combined applications of Cd and La. The purpose of this experiment was to explore the mechanism of AMF affecting plant growth and metal uptake via interactions with rhizosphere microbes. We found that C. etunicatum (i) significantly enhanced plant nutritional level and biomass and decreased metal concentration in the co-contaminated soil; (ii) significantly altered the structure of maize rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities; (iii) strongly enriched the abundance of carbohydrate metabolism genes, ammonia and nitrate production genes, IAA (indole-3-acetic acid) and ACC deaminase (1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate) genes, and slightly altered the abundance of P-related functional genes; (iv) regulated the abundance of microbial quorum sensing system and metal membrane transporter genes, thereby improving the stability and adaptability of the rhizosphere microbial community. This study provides evidence of AMF improving plant growth and resistance to Cd and La stresses by regulating plant rhizosphere microbial communities and aids our understanding of the underlying mechanisms.
