There are some weaknesses in the methodology of original paper “Informal landfill contributes to the pollution of microplastic in the surrounding environment” published in Environmental Pollution. We commented on the groundwater sampling procedure that affect the calculated concentrations of microplastics in groundwater. Important information related to the description of sampling wells, informal landfill, and the exact description of sample collection method are missing. In addition, significant data related to the groundwater like water level, flow direction, and velocity have been skipped, which are fundamental in groundwater related studies. There should be a clear diagram of landfill location and sampling wells in the landfill, for appropriate understanding of microplastics (MPs) pollution in surrounding environment of a landfill.

Ground-based Multi-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (Max-DOAS) measurements of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) were continuously obtained from January to November 2019 in northeastern China (NEC). Seasonal variations in the mean NO₂ vertical column densities (VCDs) were apparent, with a maximum of 2.9 × 10¹⁶ molecules cm⁻² in the winter due to enhanced NO₂ emissions from coal-fired winter heating, a longer photochemical lifetime and atmospheric transport. Daily maximum and minimum NO₂ VCDs were observed, independent of the season, at around 11:00 and 13:00 local time, respectively, and the most obvious increases and decreases occurred in the winter and autumn, respectively. The mean diurnal NO₂ VCDs at 11:00 increased to at 08:00 by 1.6, 5.8, and 6.7 × 10¹⁵ molecules cm⁻² in the summer, autumn and winter, respectively, due to increased NO₂ emissions, and then decreased by 2.8, 4.2, and 5.1 × 10¹⁵ molecules cm⁻² at 13:00 in the spring, summer, and autumn, respectively. This was due to strong solar radiation and increased planetary boundary layer height. There was no obvious weekend effect, and the NO₂ VCDs only decreased by about 10% on the weekends. We evaluated the contributions of emissions and transport in the different seasons to the NO₂ VCDs using a generalized additive model, where the contributions of local emissions to the total in the spring, summer, autumn, and winter were 89 ± 12%, 92 ± 11%, 86 ± 12%, and 72 ± 16%, respectively. The contribution of regional transport reached 26% in the winter, and this high contribution value was mainly correlated with the northeast wind, which was due to the transport channel of air pollutants along the Changbai Mountains in NEC. The NO₂/SO₂ ratio was used to identify NO₂ from industrial sources and vehicle exhaust. The contribution of industrial NO₂ VCD sources was >66.3 ± 16% in Shenyang due to the large amount of coal combustion from heavy industrial activity, which emitted large amounts of NO₂. Our results suggest that air quality management in Shenyang should consider reductions in local NO₂ emissions from industrial sources along with regional cooperative control.

2022
Over the past two decades, there has been a lot of discussion about the rapid increase of microplastics (MPs) due to their persistence, ubiquity, and toxicity. The widespread distribution of MPs in various freshwater ecosystems makes them available for different trophic levels biota. The ingestion and trophic transfer of MPs may induce potential impacts on freshwater food webs. Therefore, this systematic review is an in-depth review of 51 recent studies to confirm the spatial distribution of MPs in the Chinese freshwater ecosystem including water, sediment and biota, exposure pathways, and impacts on freshwater food webs. The result suggested the white, transparent and colored, Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE) of <1 mm fibers were dominant in Chinese freshwaters. The uptake of MPs by various freshwater organisms as well as physiological, biological and chemical impacts on food webs were also elucidated. At last, some limitations were discussed for future studies to better understand the effects of MPs on food webs.

In acidic medium, hazardous heavy metals of lead-zinc tailing (LZT) are easily leachable and mobilizable. Thus, the hazard, amount, form, and complexity of the leached heavy metals under acidic precipitation become a major environmental concern. This work investigates the gangue minerals, toxicity, speciation, leaching characteristics of heavy metals in LZT under simulated acid rain, as well as immobilization effects and mechanisms using a sustainable binder. In LZT, dolomite, quartz, calcite, and muscovite are the main gangue minerals, tiny hazardous metallic minerals were absorbed in the surface. The results revealed that Pb, Zn, Cr, and Cd were the predominant harmful elements, particularly Pb and Zn. Zn is leached completely and is the concerned hazardous element under simulated acid rain. In the acid rain neutralization ability test, the amount of leachable Pb, Cr, Ca, and Si maintained in equilibrium, leached Zn, Cd, Al, and Mg depended on the addition of acid. Pb and Ca were sedimented in residues. Immobilization of Pb, Zn, Cr, and Cd depended on the stability of Ca(OH)₂/C–S–H of hydrates, and 70% LZTHP after curing 7 days can be used for some practical engineering projects. This work opens up deeply understandings for the leached heavy metals under acidic precipitation and improves the sustainable and safe in the field of immobilization of heavy metals.

TCDD (2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) and BDE-209 (decabromodiphenyl ether) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) produced by industrial activities and associated with several diseases. TCDD is a known human carcinogen, but few studies investigated about the effects of exposure to both compounds, i.e., whether BDE-209 and TCDD can render tumor cells more aggressive and metastatic. In the current study we investigated if the exposure of B16–F1 and B16–F10 melanoma murine cells to environmental relevant concentrations of TCDD and BDE-209 at 24 h and 15-day exposure modulates the expression of genes related to metastasis, making the cells more aggressive. Both pollutants did not affect cell viability but lead to increase of cell proliferation, including the upregulation of vimentin, MMP2, MMP9, MMP14 and PGK1 gene expression and downregulation of E-cadherin, TIMP2, TIMP3 and RECK, strongly suggesting changes in cell phenotypes defined as epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) in BDE-209 and TCDD-exposed cells. Foremost, increased expression of metalloproteinases and decreased expression of their inhibitors made B16–F1 cells similar the more aggressive B16–F10 cell line. Also, the higher secretion of extracellular vesicles by cells after acute exposure to BDE-209 could be related with the phenotype changes. These results are a strong indication of the potential of BDE-209 and TCDD to modulate cell phenotype, leading to a more aggressive profile.

The widespread occurrence of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems that resulted in environmental contamination has attracted worldwide attention. Microplastics pose a potential threat to the growth and health of aquatic organisms, thereby affecting the function of the ecosystems. As one of the top ten countries producing and consuming plastic products globally, China's aquatic ecosystems have been profoundly affected by microplastics. In this review, we have summarized the microplastics contamination in three typical water environments (marine environment, freshwater environment, and wastewater treatment plants) in China, elaborated on the adverse impacts of microplastics on the ecological environment, and evaluated the potential ecological risks exposed to the ecosystem. In addition, the progress of microplastics extraction methods, as the important basis of microplastics related research, in aquatic ecosystems was introduced, especially the difference between the extraction of microplastics from wastewater and sludge samples. At present, most of the research on microplastics focuses on “one point”, such as a certain river or wastewater treatment plant. Research on the mitigation and transfer of microplastics among different connected water environments is still lacking. Also, the microscale ecotoxicity caused by microplastics is poorly understood. In the end, we proposed suggestions and perspectives for future research regarding microplastics in the aquatic ecosystems in China.

Soils have been widely acknowledged as important natural sources of nitric oxide (NO) and meanwhile sinks of nitric dioxide (NO₂). High nitrogen deposition across South China could potentially result in large NO emissions from subtropical forests soils there. In this study, the dynamic chamber method was applied to monitor NO and NO₂ fluxes at two subtropical forest sites in South China, namely “Qianyanzhou” (QYZ) and “Tieshanping” (TSP). Chronically higher N deposition occurred at TSP than that at QYZ. Besides soil water filled pore spaces (WFPS) and temperature, ambient NO concentration could also possibly be important in regulating temporal NO emissions, especially in the winter. For both sites, the optimum soil temperature was above 25 °C, while the optimum WFPS for NO release at QYZ was higher (65–70%) than that at TSP (<23%). Moreover, heavy rainfall could trigger NO emission pulses from moist soils at QYZ, while rainfall-induced NO pulses were only observed after a long drying period at TSP. Distinctly different contents of mineral nitrogen and soil moisture conditions between the two sites might induce the divergent preference of WFPS and responses to rainfall. The cumulative soil emission of NO reached 0.41 ± 0.01 and 0.76 ± 0.01 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ at QYZ and TSP, contributing to 2.5% and 1.4% of the annual throughfall N input, respectively. At both sites, NO₂ were mainly deposited to soils, accounting for 2% and 21% of soil-emitted NO at QYZ and TSP, respectively. The observed annual NO emissions at these two sites were larger than the median values observed for tropical and temperate forests and unfertilized croplands. Higher N deposition could induce larger NO emission potential, while soil temperature and pH might also be important in regulating regional soil NO emissions as N-loss from subtropical forests.

Wei, Wenshu | Qi, Jianhua | Yin, Yidan | Gong, Jing | Yao, Xiaohong
Atmospheric bioaerosols contain live and dead biological components that can enter the human respiratory tract (HRT) and affect human health. Here, the total microorganisms in a coastal megacity, Qingdao, were characterized on the basis of long-term observations from October 2013 to January 2021. Particular attention was given to the size dependence of inhalable bioaerosols in concentration and respiratory deposition in different populations on foggy and hazy days. Bioaerosol samples stained with 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) were selected to measure the total airborne microbe (TAM) concentrations with an epifluorescence microscope, while a multiple-path particle dosimetry model was employed to calculate respiratory deposition. The mean TAM concentrations in the particle size range of 0.65–1.1 μm (TAM₀.₆₅–₁.₁) were 1.23, 2.02, 1.60 and 2.33 times those on sunny reference days relative to the corresponding values on days with slight, mild, moderate and severe levels of haze, respectively. The mean concentration of TAMs in the particle size range of 0.65–2.1 μm (TAM₀.₆₅–₂.₁) on severely hazy days was (2.02 ± 3.28) × 10⁵ cells/m³, with a reduction of 4.16% relative to that on the reference days. The mean TAM₀.₆₅–₂.₁ concentration changed from (1.50 ± 1.37) × 10⁵ cells/m³ to (1.76 ± 1.36) × 10⁵ cells/m³, with TAM₀.₆₅–₁.₁ increasing from (7.91 ± 7.97) × 10⁴ cells/m³ to (1.76 ± 1.33) × 10⁵ cells/m³ on days with light fog days and medium fog, respectively. The modeling results showed that the majority of TAM₀.₆₅–₂.₁ deposition occurred in the extrathoracic (ET) region, followed by the alveolar (AL) region. When different populations were examined separately, the deposition doses (DDs) in adult females and in children ranked at the minimum value (6.19 × 10³ cells/h) and maximum value (1.08 × 10⁴ cells/h), respectively. However, the inhalation risks on polluted days, such as hazy, foggy and mixed hazy–foggy (HF) days, were still below the threshold for adverse impacts on human health.

Santini, G. | Acconcia, S. | Napoletano, M. | Memoli, V. | Santorufo, L. | Maisto, G.
Nowadays, microplastics represent emergent pollutants in terrestrial ecosystems that exert impacts on soil properties, affecting key soil ecological functions. In agroecosystems, plastic mulching is one of the main sources of plastic residues in soils. The present research aimed to evaluate the effects of two types of plastic sheets (un-biodegradable and biodegradable) on soil abiotic (pH, water content, concentrations of organic and total carbon, and total nitrogen) and biotic (respiration, and activities of hydrolase, dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase and urease) properties, and on phytotoxicity (germination index of Sorghum saccharatum L. and Lepidium sativum L.). Results revealed that soil properties were mostly affected by exposure time to plastics rather than the kind (un-biodegradable and biodegradable) of plastics. After six months since mesocosm setting up, the presence of un-biodegradable plastic sheets significantly decreased soil pH, respiration and dehydrogenase activity and increased total and organic carbon concentrations, and toxicity highlighted by S. saccharatum L. Instead, the presence of biodegradable plastic sheets significantly decreased dehydrogenase activity and increased organic carbon concentrations. An overall temporal improvement of the investigated properties in soils covered by biodegradable plastic sheets occurred.

Soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) generated from industrial processes are highly spatially heterologous, with limited quantitative studies on their main influencing factors. The present study evaluated the soil PAHs in three types of industrial parks (a petrochemical industrial park, a brominated flame retardant manufacturing park, and an e-waste dismantling park) and their surroundings. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs in the parks were 340–2.43 × 10³, 26.2–2.63 × 10³, and 394–2.01 × 10⁴ ng/g, which were significantly higher than those in the surrounding areas by 1–2 orders of magnitude, respectively. The highest soil PAH contamination was observed in the e-waste dismantling park. Nap can be considered as characteristic pollutant in the petrochemical industrial park, while Phe in the flame retardant manufacturing park and e-waste dismantling park. Low molecular weight PAHs (2–3 rings) predominated in the petrochemical industrial park (73.0%) and the surrounding area of brominated flame retardant manufacturing park (80.3%). However, high molecular weight PAHs (4–6 rings) were enriched in the other sampling sites, indicating distinct sources and determinants of soil PAHs. Source apportionment results suggested that PAHs in the parks were mainly derived from the leakage of petroleum products in the petroleum manufacturing process and pyrolysis or combustion of fossil fuels. Contrarily, the PAHs in the surrounding areas could have been derived from the historical coal combustion and traffic emissions. Source emissions, wind direction, and local topography influenced the PAH spatial distributions.
