Ammonia (NH₃) emissions could have significant impacts on both ecosystems and human health. Ice cores from the Tibetan Plateau contain information about past ammonium (NH₄⁺) deposition, which could yield important insights into historical NH₃ emissions in the surrounding source regions as well as long-distance NH₄⁺ aerosol transport via atmospheric circulation. In this paper, we present a high-resolution atmospheric NH₄⁺ deposition record for the period, 1951–2008, reconstructed from the Zangser Kangri (ZK) ice core in the northern Tibetan Plateau. An empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of major soluble ions (NH₄⁺, NO₃⁻, SO₄²⁻, Cl⁻, Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺ and Ca²⁺) reveals that EOF 1 has significant loadings of all ions, therefore representing common transport pathways, while EOF 2 is only significantly loaded by NH₄⁺ (0.86) and NO₃⁻ (0.35), suggesting a unique signal possibly representing emissions from the surrounding terrestrial ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau. Backward trajectory analysis indicates that the air masses over the ZK ice core drilling site primarily come from the northwestern Indian Peninsula. NH₃ emissions from agricultural activities in this area likely contribute to the NH₄⁺ deposition of the ZK ice core via the Indian monsoon. Correlations between EOF 2 time series and temperature, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) suggest that increasing temperature and vegetation after 1980 likely promoted NH₃ emissions from terrestrial ecosystems. Our results provide a reliable and valuable assessment of NH₄⁺ deposition from human activities and terrestrial ecosystems in the ZK ice core, and help in understanding air pollution over the past few decades in the northern Tibetan Plateau.

Transient storage model (TSM) is the most popular model for simulating solutes transport in natural streams. Accurate estimate of TSM parameters is essential in many hydraulic and environmental problems. In this study, an improved version of high-level Moth-Swarm Algorithm (IMSA) was used to predict the TSM parameters. First, the performance of the improved model was successfully assessed through several benchmark functions. Next, a series of 58 measured hydraulic and geometric datasets was used to validate the model. The data were divided into two series randomly, 38 datasets were selected for derivation and the remaining 20 datasets were used to verification. Then the results of IMSA were compared with other algorithms proposed by previous researchers. Two statistical indices of root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of correlation (CC) were employed to evaluate the performance of the model. The results showed that despite the high complexity and uncertainty associated with the dispersion processes, the IMSA algorithm could accurately predict the TSM parameters.

The residence times of plastics in the oceans are unknown, largely because of the durability of the material and the relatively short (decadal) period of time over which plastic products have been manufactured. In this study, classic LEGO bricks constructed of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and washed up on beaches of southwest England have been subjected to X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis and the spectra and any other identifiers matched with unweathered blocks stored in collections or sets of known history. Relative to unweathered equivalents, weathered blocks exhibit varying degrees of yellowing, fracturing and fouling, and are of lower mass, average stud height and mechanical strength. These effects are attributed to photo-oxidative degradation and the actions of physical stress and abrasion while exposed to the marine environment. Infrared spectra indicate that the polymer remains largely intact on weathering but with photo-degradation of the polybutadiene phase of ABS, while quantification of XRF spectra reveals that pigments like cadmium sulphoselenide become more heterogeneously distributed in the matrix when in the environment. Using measured mass loss of paired (weathered versus unweathered) equivalents and the age of blocks obtained from storage we estimate residence times of between about 100 and 1300 years for this type and thickness of plastic, with variations reflecting differences in precise additive composition and modes of weathering.

Pharmaceutical pollution is now recognised as a major emerging agent of global change. Increasingly, pharmaceutical pollutants are documented to disrupt ecologically important physiological and behavioural traits in exposed wildlife. However, little is known about potential impacts of pharmaceutical exposure on among-individual variation in these traits, despite phenotypic diversity being critical for population resilience to environmental change. Furthermore, although wildlife commonly experience multiple stressors contemporaneously, potential interactive effects between pharmaceuticals and biological stressors—such as predation threat—remain poorly understood. To redress this, we investigated the impacts of long-term exposure to the pervasive pharmaceutical pollutant fluoxetine (Prozac®) on among-individual variation in metabolic and behavioural traits, and the combined impacts of fluoxetine exposure and predation threat on mean metabolic and behavioural traits in a freshwater fish, the guppy (Poecilia reticulata). Using a mesocosm system, guppy populations were exposed for 15 months to one of two field-realistic levels of fluoxetine (nominal concentrations: 30 and 300 ng/L) or a solvent control. Fish from these populations were then tested for metabolic rate (oxygen uptake) and behaviour (activity), both before and after experiencing one of three levels of a predation treatment: an empty tank, a non-predatory fish (Melanotaenia splendida) or a predatory fish (Leiopotherapon unicolor). Guppies from both fluoxetine treatments had ∼70% lower among-individual variation in their activity levels, compared to unexposed fish. Similarly, fluoxetine exposure at the higher dosage was associated with a significant (26%) reduction in individual-level variation in oxygen uptake relative to unexposed fish. In addition, mean baseline metabolic rate was disrupted in low-fluoxetine exposed fish, although mean metabolic and behavioural responses to predation threat were not affected. Overall, our study demonstrates that long-term exposure to a pervasive pharmaceutical pollutant alters ecologically relevant traits in fish and erodes among-individual variability, which may be detrimental to the stability of contaminated populations globally.

Bioaccumulation of Hg and Cd from food is a complex ecological process that has been oversimplified in the past. Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) provide a powerful model to biomonitor metal concentrations in marine environments worldwide. We combined proportions-based nutritional geometry with metal analysis, stomach content analysis and the proximate composition of prey, to yield novel insights into the accumulation of Hg and Cd. Our analysis showed an age-related accumulation trend for Cd and Hg in kidney and liver, with highest concentrations found at 18 years of age. When viewed through the lens of nutritional ecology, Argentine anchovy (58.1 Mass %) and South American long-finned squid (22.7 Mass %), provided most of the dietary intake of protein (P) and lipids (L) (P:L ratio = 2.6:1.0) and also represented the main source for Cd and Hg levels accumulated in their bodies. This study presents unprecedented evidence on metal accumulation in relation to age and nutritional intake in a marine predator.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a highly pervasive chemical in consumer products with its ascribed endocrine-disrupting properties. Several studies have shown the cytotoxic, genotoxic, and carcinogenic property of BPA over a multitude of tissues. Although BPA exposure has earlier been implicated in female infertility, the underlying molecular mechanisms explaining the toxicity of BPA in the ovary remains less understood. In the present study, a plausible correlation between redox balance or inflammatory signaling and reproductive fitness upon BPA exposure has been examined in zebrafish (Danio rerio) ovary. Congruent with significant alteration of major antioxidant enzymes (SOD1, SOD2, catalase, GPx1α, GSTα1) at the transcript level, 30 d BPA exposure at environmentally relevant concentrations (1, 10 and 100 μg L⁻¹) promotes ovarian ROS/RNS synthesis, lipid peroxidation but attenuates catalase activity indicating elevated stress response. BPA promotes a sharp increase in ovarian p38 MAPK, NF-κB phosphorylation (activation), inducible nitric oxide synthase (Nos2a), and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1β) expression, the reliable markers for inflammatory response. Congruent to an increased number of atretic follicles, BPA-exposed zebrafish ovary reveals elevated Bax/Bcl2 ratio, activation of caspase-8, -3 and DNA breakdown suggesting heightened cell death. Importantly, significant alteration in nuclear estrogen receptor (ER) transcripts (esr1, esr2a, and esr2b) and proteins (ERα, ERβ), gonadotropin receptors, and markers associated with steroidogenesis and growth factor gene expression in BPA-exposed ovary correlates well with impaired ovarian functions and maturational response. Collectively, elevated oxidative/nitrosative stress-mediated inflammatory response and altered ER expression can influence ovarian health and reproductive fitness in organisms exposed to BPA environment.

Tropospheric ozone (O₃) impairs physiological processes of plants while nitrogen (N) deposition may cause imbalances in soil N and other nutrients such as phosphorus (P) suggesting an increase of P demand for plants. However, the combined effect of O₃, soil N and P on isoprene emission from leaves has never been tested. We therefore examined isoprene emission in leaves of Oxford poplar clone exposed to O₃ (ambient, AA [35.0 nmol mol⁻¹ as daily mean]; 1.5 × AA; 2.0 × AA), soil N (0 and 80 kg N ha⁻¹) and soil P (0, 40 and 80 kg P ha⁻¹) in July and September in a Free-Air Controlled Exposure (FACE) facility. We also investigated the response of isoprene emission to foliar N, P and abscisic acid (ABA) contents in September because the 2-C-methylerythritol-5-phosphate (MEP) pathway of isoprenoid biosynthesis produces ABA. We found that O₃ increased isoprene emission in July, which was associated to increased dark respiration, suggesting an activation of metabolism against O₃ stress as an initial response. However, O₃ decreased isoprene emission in September which was associated to reduced net photosynthesis. In September, isoprene emission was positively correlated with leaf N content and negatively correlated with leaf P content in AA. However, no response of isoprene emission to foliar N and P was found in elevated O₃, suggesting that the isoprene responses to foliar N and P depended on the O₃ exposure levels. Isoprene emission rate in 1.5 × AA and 2.0 × AA increased with increasing leaf ABA content, indicating accelerated senescence of injured leaves to favor new leaf growth when high O₃ and nutritional availability in the soil were combined. Even though foliar N and P usually act as a proxy for isoprene emission rate, the impact of recent abiotic factors such as O₃ should be always considered for modeling isoprene emission under climate change.

The active use of solid fossil fuels (coal) in the production of heat and electricity has led to significant pollution, climate change, environmental degradation, and an increase in morbidity and mortality. Many countries (in particular, European ones, China, Japan, the USA, Canada, etc.) have launched programs for using plant and agricultural raw materials to produce heat and electricity by burning them instead of or together with traditional fuels. It is a promising solution to produce slurry fuels, based on a mixture of coal processing, oil refining and agricultural waste. This paper presents the results of experimental research into the formation and assessment of the most hazardous emissions (sulfur and nitrogen oxides) from the combustion of promising coal slurry fuels with straw, sunflower and algae additives, i.e. the most common agricultural waste. A comparative analysis has been carried out to identify the differences in the concentrations of sulfur and nitrogen oxides from the combustion of typical coal, coal processing waste, as well as fuel slurries with and without plant additives. It has been shown that the concentration of sulfur and nitrogen oxides can be reduced by 62–87% and 12–57%, respectively, when using small masses of plant additives (no more than 10 wt%) and maintaining high combustion heat of the slurry fuel. However, the use of algae and straw in the slurry composition can increase the HCl emissions, which requires extra measures to fight corrosion. A generalizing criterion of slurry fuel vs. coal efficiency has been formulated to illustrate significant benefits of adding plant solid waste to coal-water slurries containing petrochemicals. Straw and sunflower waste (10 wt%) were found to be the best additives to reduce the air pollutant emissions.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution in mangrove wetlands has received increasing attention as urbanization expands rapidly. As a dominant mangrove species, Kandelia obovata is highly tolerant to Cd toxicity. Plant hormones and superoxide dismutase (SODs) play critical roles in the response to heavy metal stress in K. obovata roots. Although theirs important influence have been reported, the regulation mechanism between SODs and plant hormones in Cd detoxification by K. obovata roots remains limited. Here, we investigated relationships among SOD, plant hormones, and Cd tolerance in K. obovata roots exposed to Cd. We found that Cd was retained in the epidermis and exodermis of roots, and the epidermis and exodermis had highest hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content and SOD activity. Similarly, SOD isozymes also exhibited distinct activity in the different parts of root. Overexpressed KoCSD3 and KoFSD2 individually in Nicotiana benthamiana revealed that different SOD members contributed to H2O2 content regulation by promote the activity of downstream antioxidant enzymes under Cd treatment. In addition, assays on the effects of hormones showed that increased endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was observed in the cortex and stele, whereas the abscisic acid (ABA) content was enhanced in the epidermis and exodermis in roots during Cd treatment. The results of exogenous hormones treatment indicated that KoFSD2 upregulated under ABA and IAA treatment, but KoCSD3 only induced by ABA stimulation. Taken together, our results reveal the relationship between SODs and plant hormones, which expands the knowledge base regarding KoSODs response to plant hormones and mediating H2O2 concentration under Cd stress.

Bifenthrin (BF) is a synthetic insecticide that is widely used in fields, resulting in an increase in its exposure to animals. However, reports on the toxic effects of BF on mammalian species and the underlying mechanism are still lacking. Here, we elucidated the mechanism underlying the toxic effects of BF on mouse reproduction using cell lines of immature mouse Leydig (TM3) and Sertoli (TM4) cells, which are constituent cells of testes. Our results show that BF suppressed the proliferation and viability of TM3 and TM4 cells. Additionally, treatment with BF induced cell cycle arrest, apoptotic cell death, and DNA fragmentation. Mitochondrial dysfunction and disruption of calcium homeostasis were observed in BF-treated TM3 and TM4 cells. Further, bifenthrin modulated unfolded protein response and mitochondrion-associated membrane and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathways. The expression of the mRNAs related to cell cycle progression, steroidogenesis, and spermatogenesis was downregulated by BF, suggestive of testicular toxicity. Taken together, these results demonstrate the intracellular mechanism of action of BF to involve antiproliferative and apoptotic effects and testicular dysfunction in mouse testis.
