By measuring a battery of cytological and biochemical biomarkers in adult female perch (Perca fluviatilis), the city of Stockholm (Sweden) was investigated as a point source of anthropogenic aquatic pollution. The investigation included both an upstream gradient, 46km westwards through Lake Mälaren, and a downstream gradient, 84km eastwards through the Stockholm archipelago. Indeed, there was a graded response for most of the biomarkers and for the muscle concentrations of ΣPBDE, four organotin compounds and PFOS in the perch. The results indicated severe pollution in central Stockholm, with poor health of the perch, characterised by increased frequency of micronucleated erythrocytes, altered liver apoptosis, increased liver catalase activity, decreased brain aromatase activity, and decreased liver lysosomal membrane stability. Some biomarker responses were lowest in the middle archipelago and increased again eastwards, indicating a second, partly overlapping, gradient of toxic effects from the Baltic Sea.

Riera, Rodrigo | Becerro, Mikel A. | Stuart-Smith, Rick D. | Delgado, Juan D. | Edgar, Graham J.
Lack of knowledge of the marine realm may bias our perception of the current status and threats to marine biodiversity. Less than 10% of all ecological literature is related to the ocean, and the information we have on marine species that are threatened or on the verge of extinction is scarce. This lack of information is particularly critical for isolated areas such as oceanic archipelagos. Here we review published and grey literature on the current status of marine organisms in the Canary Islands as a case description of the consequences that current out-of-sight out-of-mind attitudes may have on this unique environment. Global change, as represented by coastal development, pollution, exotic species and climate change, are currently affecting the distribution and abundance of Canarian marine organisms, and pose multiple threats to local species and communities. Environmental risks are significant at community and species levels, particularly for threatened species. Failure to address these trends will result in shifts in local biodiversity with important ecological, social, and economic consequences. Scientists, policy makers, educators, and relevant societal groups need to collaborate to reverse deleterious coastal biodiversity trends.

The potential effects of the mineralogical composition of sediment on the degradation of oil buried on sandy beaches were investigated. Toward that purpose, a laboratory experiment was carried out with sandy sediment collected along NW Iberian Peninsula beaches, tar-balls from the Prestige oil spill (NW Spain) and seawater. The results indicate that the mineralogical composition is important for the physical appearance of the oil (tar-balls or oil coatings). This finding prompted a reassessment of the current sequence of degradation for buried oil based on compositional factors. Moreover, the halo development of the oil coatings might be enhanced by the carbonate concentration of the sand. These findings open new prospects for future monitoring and management programs for oiled sandy beaches.

2014
Bittencourt, L. | Carvalho, R.R. | Lailson-Brito, J. | Azevedo, A.F.
Underwater noise pollution has become a major concern in marine habitats. Guanabara Bay, southeastern Brazil, is an impacted area of economic importance with constant vessel traffic. One hundred acoustic recording sessions took place over ten locations. Sound sources operating within 1km radius of each location were quantified during recordings. The highest mean sound pressure level near the surface was 111.56±9.0dB re 1μPa at the frequency band of 187Hz. Above 15kHz, the highest mean sound pressure level was 76.21±8.3dB re 1μPa at the frequency 15.89kHz. Noise levels correlated with number of operating vessels and vessel traffic composition influenced noise profiles. Shipping locations had the highest noise levels, while small vessels locations had the lowest noise levels. Guanabara Bay showed noise pollution similar to that of other impacted coastal regions, which is related to shipping and vessel traffic.

2014
McHuron, Elizabeth A. | Harvey, James T. | Castellini, J Margaret | Stricker, Craig A. | O’Hara, Todd M.
We measured total selenium and total mercury concentrations ([TSe] and [THg]) in hair (n=138) and blood (n=73) of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) from California to assess variation by geography and sex, and inferred feeding relationships based on carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur stable isotopes. Harbor seals from Hg-contaminated sites had significantly greater [THg], and lesser [TSe] and TSe:THg molar ratios than seals from a relatively uncontaminated site. Males had significantly greater [THg] than females at all locations. Sulfur stable isotope values explained approximately 25% of the variability in [THg], indicating increased Hg exposure for seals with a greater use of estuarine prey species. Decreased [TSe] in harbor seals from Hg-contaminated regions may indicate a relative Se deficiency to mitigate the toxic effects of Hg. Further investigation into the Se status and the potential negative impact of Hg on harbor seals from Hg-contaminated sites is warranted.

The accuracy and applicability of the Nematode/Copepod index (N/C) in monitoring the effects of environmental disturbances is controversial. In this study, we used an integrated approach that includes both meiofauna and the sedimentary environment to demonstrate a tourism-induced disturbance gradient among sampled beaches. We also analysed the relationships between meiofauna and environmental factors. The results showed that disturbed beaches were characterised by high values of meiofauna abundance, chlorophyll a content, total organic carbon content and N/C but lower levels of dissolved oxygen. The chlorophyll a and dissolved oxygen contents were found to be the most important factors for explaining the disturbance gradient amongst the beaches. The N/C index had a positive relationship with chlorophyll a and a negative relationship with dissolved oxygen. There was no significant relationship between N/C index and total organic carbon content.

2014
Concentrations of carbonyl compounds were evaluated on places impacted by emissions from different fuels and vehicles. In order to evaluate the concentrations, four campaigns during the winter and summer of 2011 and 2012 were performed, inside a covered parking area in a commercial establishment where mainly gasohol and ethanol vehicles are in circulation. Also, measurements were done inside a semi–closed bus station, which is the direct source of emissions from heavy duty vehicles (i.e. buses) burning B3–diesel (3% biodiesel and 97% diesel). The results indicated that acetaldehyde is the main aldehyde emitted by light vehicles due to large use of ethanol in Brazil by these vehicles. In addition, the concentrations found in the bus station revealed that B3–diesel fuel increases the emissions of carbonyl compounds and that of acetaldehyde when compared with results from B0–diesel at same bus station. Possible impacts of changing diesel to B3–diesel indicate an increase of ozone formation. In terms of health, a lower impact was estimated considering only the changes in formaldehyde concentrations.

2014
Tornero, Victoria | Arias, Alberto M. | Blasco, Julián
Sediments, clams Scrobicularia plana and worms Hediste diversicolor from the Guadalquivir estuary were collected ten years after the Aznalcóllar mine spill and analyzed for metals. Significant seasonal and spatial effects were detected for most elements, so data from different sampling periods and locations were treated separately. Overall, the most polluted sites were found upstream, although Zn and Cu tended to accumulate at the estuary mouth. A significant decline of Zn in sediments and clams was observed compared to levels reported following the spill, so the estuarine ecosystem has recovered. However, the concentrations of some elements in S. plana were still higher than those of heavily contaminated regions. In this mollusk, Pb and As levels were higher in 2008 than in previous years, suggesting a new source entering into the estuary. Metals in sediments presented low bioavailability for biota, so other sources must account for the concentrations observed in these species.

Beach sands can sustain indigenous and introduced populations of enterococci. The objective of this study was to evaluate wave action in promoting the release of introduced bacteria. To accomplish this objective this study developed a method to assess attachment and identified conditions under which introduced bacteria are integrated into the sand. A new “shearing assay” showed that attachment of the introduced spike mimicked that of the natural sand when the spike was allowed to integrate into the sand for 24h at room temperature at a sand moisture content of 20%. Experiments in a wave flume showed that waves were capable of releasing about 60% of the total bacteria added. This suggests that for the range of wave conditions evaluated (height: 1.9–10.5cm, period:1–2.7s), waves were incapable of releasing all of the bacteria. Further study is needed to evaluate bacteria attachment mechanisms.

2014
van Drooge, Barend L. | Garriga, Guillem | Grimalt, Joan O.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are emitted into the atmosphere from combustion of fuels, such as emissions from traffic in urban areas, which on their terms can be important sources for the translocation of these toxic compounds to the surrounding region. Pine needles can be used as time–integrated passive air–samplers for PAHs. Pine needles were collected between 2009 and 2011 along a spatial gradient (5km) from urban background sites towards sites situated in a natural park (Collserola) within the metropolitan area of Barcelona. City samples showed PAH levels that were two times higher than the levels in the natural park. A seasonal trend was reflected by the substantially higher PAH levels in pine needles collected in the colder sampling period than those collected in the warmer period. The observed trend can be explained in terms of source emission strength, dilution and photo–chemical degradation, while also gas–pine needles partitioning may have played an important role. The city is the major source area for the translocation of PAHs towards the nearby natural park.
