Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) were added to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) at the eighth meeting of the conference of the parties in 2017. As a consequence, increasing environmental attention and international regulation on SCCPs is expected in the future. Inhalation uptake of particulate matter (PM) was an important exposure pathway for POPs into the human body. In the present study, a total of eighty PM2.5 samples were collected in the four seasons of the year at an urban site (Shandong University, Jinan) in Shandong province to investigate the seasonal changes of SCCPs and their inhalation exposure risks to human health. The concentrations of SCCPs ranged from 9.80 to 105 ng m−3, with the mean value of 38.7 ng m−3. The highest concentrations of SCCPs were detected in winter, while the lowest concentrations were in summer. SCCPs concentrations were positively correlated with the mass concentrations of PM2.5 (r = 0.629, p < 0.01), and negatively correlated with the ambient temperature (r = −0.447, p < 0.01). The SCCPs congeners with 10 carbon atoms (C10 congeners) and 7 chlorine numbers (Cl7 congeners) were the predominant congeners, which contributed 35% and 37% of the total SCCPs contamination, respectively. The average inhalation exposure was estimated to be 1.75 × 10−4 mg kg−1 day−1 for adults, which is much lower than the “no observed adverse effect level” (NOAEL) of 100 mg kg−1 day−1 given by European risk assessment for SCCPs.

Many cities fail to meet air quality standards, which results in increased risk for pulmonary disorders, including asthma. Human and experimental studies have shown that diesel exhaust (DE) particles are associated with worsening of allergic asthma. Biodiesel (BD), a cleaner fuel from renewable sources, was introduced in the eighties. Because of the reduction in particulate matter (PM) emissions, BD was expected to cause fewer adverse pulmonary effects. However, only limited data on the effect of BD emissions in asthma are available.Determine whether BD exhaust exposure in allergic sensitized mice leads to different effects on inflammatory and functional responses compared to DE exposure.Balb/C mice were orotracheally sensitized with House Dust Mite (HDM) or a saline solution with 3 weekly instillations. From day 9 until day 17 after sensitization, they were exposed daily to filtered air (FA), DE and BD exhaust (concentration: 600 μg/m³ PM₂.₅). Lung function, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) cell counts, cytokine levels (IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-17, TNF-α, TSLP) in the BALF, peribronchiolar eosinophils and parenchymal macrophages were measured.HDM-sensitized animals presented increased lung elastance (p = 0.046), IgG1 serum levels (p = 0.029), peribronchiolar eosinophils (p = 0.028), BALF levels of total cells (p = 0.020), eosinophils (p = 0.028), IL-5 levels (p = 0.002) and TSLP levels (p = 0.046) in BALF. DE exposure alone increased lung elastance (p = 0.000) and BALF IL-4 levels (p = 0.045), whereas BD exposure alone increased BALF TSLP levels (p = 0.004). BD exposure did not influence any parameters after HDM challenge, while DE exposed animals presented increased BALF levels of total cells (p = 0.019), lymphocytes (p = 0.000), neutrophils (p = 0.040), macrophages (p = 0.034), BALF IL-4 levels (p = 0.028), and macrophagic inflammation in the lung tissue (p = 0.037), as well as decreased IgG1 (p = 0.046) and IgG2 (p = 0.043) levels when compared to the HDM group.The results indicate more adverse pulmonary effects of DE compared to BD exposure in allergic sensitized animals.

Veterinary antibiotics are widely used in livestock production and can be released to the environment via manure, affecting non-target organisms. Recent studies provide evidence that antibiotics can adversely affect both plants and insects but whether antibiotics in soil also affect trophic interactions is unknown.We tested whether antibiotics grown in sand as soil substitute with environmentally relevant concentrations of penicillin, sulfadiazine and tetracycline affect the survival of aphids feeding on plants (two crop and one non-crop plant species). Apera spica-venti, Brassica napus, and Triticum aestivum individuals were infested with aphids that were monitored over four weeks. We did not observe effects of penicillin or tetracycline on plants or aphids. However, sulfadiazine treatments reduced plant growth and increased mortality in the two tested grass species, but not in B. napus. Sulfadiazine subsequently decreased aphid density indirectly through reduced host plant biomass. We thus show that an antibiotic at realistic concentrations in a soil substitute can affect several trophic levels, i.e. plants and herbivores. This study contributes to the environmental risk assessment of veterinary antibiotics as it implies that their use potentially affects plant-insect interactions at environmentally relevant concentrations.

The distributions of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in various size fractions of indoor dust samples from homes (H; n = 18) and building material markets (B; n = 7) in the Rhine/Main region of Germany were investigated. Three particle size fractions (F1: 150–200 μm, F2: 63–150 μm, and F3: <63 μm) and bulk dust (BD) subsamples (<200 μm) of each sample were analyzed for 10 OPFRs. On average, the total OPFR concentrations (∑10OPFR) in bulk dust and all three size fractions from building material markets were 133, 153, 196, and 88.0 μg/g in subsamples B-BD, B-F1, B-F2, and B-F3. These concentrations were at least five times higher than those in bulk dust and all three size fractions from homes, with values of 19.3, 17.2, 19.5, and 18.7 μg/g for subsamples H-BD, H-F1, H-F2, and H-F3, respectively. Tris(2-chloroisopropyl)phosphate (TCIPP) was the dominant congener in dust from building material markets, contributing over 91% to the ∑10OPFR of B-BD and all particle size fractions. Meanwhile, both tris(2-butoxyethyl)phosphate (TBOEP) and TCIPP were abundant in dust from homes, respectively contributing 28%–41% and 31%–43% to the ∑10OPFR of H-BD and all particle size fractions. Most of the OPFR concentrations showed no consistent trend with particle size. However, TCIPP was more likely to be enriched in F2. Microscopic examination indicated that TCIPP in indoor dust mainly originated from abraded fragments of commercial products. In contrast, TBOEP accumulated in F3, related to direct transfer of floor-care products to fine dust particles. The concentrations of OPFRs were not significantly correlated with total organic carbon contents in any particle size fraction. However, evaluation of their mass contributions showed that more than 85% of OPFRs accumulated in particles smaller than 150 μm, indicating that this particle size fraction is most suitable for monitoring of OPFRs.

There is a growing conservation concern about the possible consequences of environmental contamination in the health of bat communities. Most studies on the effects of contaminants in bats have been focused on organic contaminants, and the consequences of bat exposure to metals and metalloids remain largely unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of external biological matrices (fur and wing membrane) for the assessment of exposure and bioaccumulation of metals in bats. The concentration of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, manganese, nickel, lead, selenium and zinc was measured in internal organs (liver, heart, brain), internal (bone) and external tissues (wing membrane, fur) collected from bat carcasses of four species (Hypsugo savii, Nyctalus leisleri, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, Pipistrellus pygmaeus) obtained in windfarm mortality searches. With the exception of zinc (P = 0.223), the results showed significant differences between the concentrations of metals in the analyzed tissues for all metals (P < 0.05). Significant differences were also found between organs/tissues (P < 0.001), metals (P < 0.001) and a significant interaction between organs/tissues and metals was found (P < 0.001). Despite these results, the patterns in terms of metal accumulation were similar for all samples. Depending on the metal, the organ/tissue that showed the highest concentrations varied, but fur and wing had the highest concentrations for most metals. The variability obtained in terms of metal concentrations in different tissues highlights the need to define standardized methods capable of being applied in monitoring bat populations worldwide. The results indicate that wing membrane and fur, biological matrices that may be collected from living bats, yield reliable results and may be useful for studies on bats ecotoxicology, coupled to a standardized protocol for large-scale investigation of metal accumulation.

In this study, we analysed a data set from 10 low-cost PM₂.₅ sensors using the Internet of Things (IoT) for air quality monitoring in Mae Sot, which is one of the most vulnerable areas for high PM₂.₅ concentration in Thailand, during the 2018 burning season. Our objectives were to understand the nature of the plume movement and to investigate possibilities of adopting IoT sensors for near real-time forecasting of PM₂.₅ concentrations. Sensor data including PM₂.₅ and meteorological parameters (wind speed and direction) were collected online every 2 min where data were grouped into four zones and averaged every 15 min interval. Results of diurnal profile plot revealed that PM₂.₅ concentrations were high around early to late morning (3:00–9:00) and gradually reduced till the rest of the day. During the biomass burning period, maximum daily average concentration recorded by the sensors was 280 μg/m³ at Thai Samakkhi while the minimum was 13 μg/m³ at Mae Sot. Lag time concentrations, attributed by biomass burning (hotspots), significantly influenced the formation of PM₂.₅ while the disappearance of PM₂.₅ was found to be influenced by moderate wind speed. The PM₂.₅ concentrations of the next 15 min at the downwind zone (MG) were predicted using lag time concentrations with different wind categories. The next 15 min predictions of PM₂.₅ at MG were found to be mainly influenced by its lag time concentrations (MG_Lag); with higher wind speed, however, the lag time concentrations from the upwind zones (MS_Lag and TS_Lag) started to show more influence. From this study, we have found that low-cost IoT sensors provide not only real-time monitoring information but also demonstrate great potential as an effective tool to understand the PM₂.₅ plume movement with temporal variation and geo-specific location.

Estimation of mercury (Hg) species fluxes in Hg contaminated rivers is crucial to predict Hg methylation in connected sediment sinks. Cinnabar (HgS) was mined and roasted for ∼500 years in the Idrija mining area, Slovenia, which is drained by the Idrijca River to the Gulf of Trieste (GT), Italy. Mining residues dumped into the Idrijca River caused high proportions of cinnabar in sediments, whereas soils containing high proportions of natural organic matter bound to Hg (NOM-Hg) are attributed to atmospheric Hg deposition. Previous calculations of Hg fluxes have been based on the erosion of cinnabar only, and neglected transport of NOM-Hg derived from soil. Here, we estimated NOM-Hg and cinnabar fluxes in the Idrijca River and evaluated the extent of variability under changing hydrological conditions. We estimated the discharge of NOM-Hg by Idrijca's tributaries and the importance of NOM-Hg fluxes for Hg methylation in the GT. Mass balance calculations reveal that approximately 11.2 Mg y⁻¹ of NOM-Hg and 38.9 Mg y⁻¹ of cinnabar are transported by the Idrijca River to the GT under median-flow conditions. In the past 520 years, a total of 53,000 tons of Hg have been released from the Idrija mining area, of which ∼32,000 tons were NOM-Hg. Under low-flow conditions, Idrijca's tributaries deliver more than 1280 kg y⁻¹ of NOM-Hg. This study highlights the importance of Hg species analyses and their flux calculations to estimate risks of biological Hg uptake in sedimentary Hg sinks connected to Hg mining areas.

We investigate the distribution and effects of polystyrene microplastic (MP) particles in exposure experiments with the ecotoxicology model organism Daphnia magna. The aim was to investigate the short and long-term toxicity of MP at different concentrations. To achieve this goal, the effects of 6 μm commercially available polystyrene beads on two different life-stages of D. magna: < 24 h old juveniles and 9 days old adults was assessed. The following end points in test animals were measured: (1) survival, (2) growth, (3) individual and population fecundity, (4) age at maturation and (5) body size of newborn offspring. These response variables were followed in two acute and two chronic experiments. The acute experiments showed that MP is not acutely toxic to D. magna within 48 h, but cause added mortality within 120 h. The juveniles were about 50% more sensitive than the adults tested. In life-cycle experiments testing chronic exposure to MP, again, animals exposed as juveniles at relatively high concentrations, i.e. > 30 μg ml⁻¹ showed higher sensitivity. We observed slightly increased mortality, reduced growth and stimulation of early reproduction at the cost of later reproduction. Animals exposed after reaching adulthood did not show increased mortality and showed a stimulation response with higher reproductive rates than the control group. However, both the growth rate of mother animals and the body size of newborn declined with increasing dose of MP. We conclude that these effects indicate a role of MP in mechanical interaction/interference with the animal on the level of feeding (clogging filtering functions), digestion (gut filled with plastic particles), and/or other animal behavior. The study also illustrates how MP with slow break-down rates may accumulate in the environment and enter the food-chain as obstructing non-food particles in filter-feeding organisms.

Concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide have been continuously increasing, and more investigations are needed in regard to the responses of various plants to the corresponding climatic conditions. In particular, potential variations in phytoremediation efficiency induced by global warming have rarely been investigated. Objective of this research was to evaluate the changes in phytoremediation efficiency of Noccaea caerulescens exposed to different concentrations of CO2. The concentrations of CO2 in the elevated CO2 treatments were adjusted to 550 ± 50 ppm to match the level of atmospheric CO2 predicted in 2050–2070. Compared to ambient controls (400 ppm), biomass yields and metal concentrations of N. caerulescens increased under elevated CO2 conditions, thus indicating that the phytoremediation efficiency of the species could increase in higher CO2 environment. In addition, water soluble and exchangeable Pb and Cu concentrations in soils decreased under elevated CO2 conditions, which reduced the leaching risks of the metals. The concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) of N. caerulescens decreased to different degrees with the increased CO2 concentrations. The overall findings suggested that elevations in CO2 can reduce the oxidative damage caused by metals in this species. The phytoremediation efficiency of N. caerulescens grown in multiple metal-enriched soils could be enhanced with global warming.

Unplanned oil spills during offshore oil production are a serious problem for the industry and the marine environment. Here we assess the biodegradation potential of marine microorganisms from three water depths in the Campos Basin (South Atlantic Ocean): (i) 5 m (surface), (ii) ∼80 m (chlorophyll maximum layer), and (iii) ∼1200 m (near the bottom). After incubating seawater samples with or without crude oil for 52 days, we used metagenomics and classic microbiology techniques to analyze microbial abundance and diversity, and measured physical-chemical parameters to better understand biodegradation processes. We observed increased microbial abundance and concomitant decreases in dissolved oxygen and hydrocarbon concentrations, indicating oil biodegradation in the three water depths treatments within approximately 27 days. An increase in metagenomic sequences of oil-degrading archaea, fungi, and bacteria (Alcanivorax, Alteromonas, Colwellia, Marinobacter, and Pseudomonas) accompanied by a significant increase in metagenomic sequences involved in the degradation of aromatic compounds indicate that crude oil promotes the growth of microorganisms with oil degradation potential. The abundance of genes involved in biodegrading benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, alkanes, and poly-aromatic hydrocarbons peaked approximately 3 days after oil addition. All 12 novel metagenome-assembled genomes contained genes involved in hydrocarbon degradation, indicating the oil-degrading potential of planktonic microbes in the Campos Basin.
