A comparison of chromium abatement from irrigation water, by the use of two selected plant species, Phragmites australis and Helianthus annuus, planted in chromium-contaminated soil, was studied in the present work. The above plant species were irrigated, in a continuous mode, with 10 mg Crⱽᴵ/L contaminated tap water. More than 90 % of hexavalent chromium was reduced to trivalent chromium, from both plant species, as measured in the drainage water. Moreover, total chromium removal ranged from 54 % (Phragmites) to 70 % (Helianthus). After 90 days, the total chromium content of the contaminated soil dropped from 70 to 32 and 34 mg Cr/kgdᵣy ₛₒᵢₗ, for Helianthus and Phragmites, respectively. Helianthus accumulated higher amount of chromium in the roots (2,730 mg Cr/kgdᵣy ₜᵢₛₛᵤₑ) as compared to 1,800 mg Cr/kgdᵣy ₜᵢₛₛᵤₑ for Phragmites. Most of Crⱽᴵ was reduced to Crᴵᴵᴵ in all plant tissues, with Phragmites showing lower affinity for Crⱽᴵ reduction in the root tissues but higher chromium translocation potential from roots to stems, while Helianthus showed higher chromium translocation from roots to leaves. Toxicity effects, expressed as root growth rate inhibition, indicated that Phragmites were the most tolerant specie to chromium effects. Both plant species showed high potentialities to be used in phytoremediation installations for chromium removal.

Both groundwater flow and mercury concentrations in pore water and seawater were quantified in the groundwater seeping site of the Bay of Puck, southern Baltic Sea. Total dissolved mercury (HgTD) in pore water ranged from 0.51 to 4.90 ng l⁻¹. Seawater samples were characterized by elevated HgTD concentrations, ranging from 4.41 to 6.37 ng l⁻¹, while HgTD concentrations in groundwater samples ranged from 0.51 to 1.15 ng l⁻¹. High HgTD concentrations in pore water of the uppermost sediment layers were attributed to seawater intrusion into the sediment. The relationship between HgTD concentrations and salinity of pore water was non-conservative, indicating removal of dissolved mercury upon mixing seawater with groundwater. The mechanism of dissolved mercury removal was further elucidated by examining its relationships with both dissolved organic matter, dissolved manganese (Mn II), and redox potential. The flux of HgTD to the Bay of Puck was estimated to be 18.9 ± 6.3 g year⁻¹. The submarine groundwater discharge-derived mercury load is substantially smaller than atmospheric deposition and riverine discharge to the Bay of Puck. Thus, groundwater is a factor that dilutes the mercury concentrations in pore water and, as a result, dilutes the mercury concentrations in the water column.

Chlorine is the most commonly used chemical for water and wastewater disinfection worldwide, and it reacts with both ammonia and dissolved organic nitrogen. Using the salicylate spectrophotometric method, effects of glycine on the classic breakpoint chlorination are studied using glycine as a surrogate for dissolved organic nitrogen. The results show that the shape of the breakpoint chlorination curve with glycine was analogous to that of water without glycine. Increasing the glycine concentration moves the chlorination breakpoint curve to the right, demonstrating that more chlorine must be added to replace the chlorine consumed by glycine and yield the desired residual active chlorine concentration. At the peak of the chlorination breakpoint curve, both NH₂Cl and mono-chlorinated organic chloramine reach their maximum. The Cl₂/N ratio of the peak is linearly related to the glycine concentration, and our calculations indicate that the maximum of mono-chlorinated organic chloramine formation by glycine chlorination occurs at a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1; the same as that for chlorinating ammonia to NH₂Cl. The distribution of NH₂Cl and organic chloramines is controlled by [Gly]/[NH₃-N]. At the breakpoint, ammonia and glycine are completely oxidized by chlorine, which leads to chlorine depletion. The stoichiometric ratio for the complete oxidation of glycine was 3:1, larger than that for complete oxidation of ammonia (2:1). For the different stoichiometric ratio in reaction of oxidation of ammonia and glycine, the sum of ammonia and glycine cannot be used as a chlorine dosage control parameter. The chlorine control method involving ammonia and glycine for chlorine and chloramination process is established.

Chemical reagents used by the textile industry are very diverse in their composition, ranging from inorganic compounds to polymeric compounds. Strong color is the most notable characteristic of textile effluents, and a large number of processes have been employed for color removal. In recent years, attention has been directed toward various natural solid materials that are able to remove pollutants from contaminated water at low cost, such as sugarcane bagasse. Cell immobilization has emerged as an alternative that offers many advantages in the biodegradation process, including the reuse of immobilized cells and high mechanical strength, which enables metabolic processes to occur under adverse conditions of pH, sterility, and agitation. Support treatment also increases the number of charges on the surface, thereby facilitating cell immobilization processes through adsorption and ionic bonds. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) is a polycationic compound known to have a positive effect on enzyme activity and stability. The aim of the present study was to investigate a low-cost alternative for the biodegradation and bioremediation of textile dyes, analyzing Saccharomyces cerevisiae immobilization in activated bagasse for the promotion of Acid Black 48 dye biodegradation in an aqueous solution. A 1 % concentration of a S. cerevisiae suspension was evaluated to determine cell immobilization rates. Once immobilization was established, biodegradation assays with free and immobilized yeast in PEI-treated sugarcane bagasse were evaluated for 240 h using UV–vis spectrophotometry. The analysis revealed significant relative absorbance values, indicating the occurrence of biodegradation in both treatments. Therefore, S. cerevisiae immobilized in sugarcane bagasse is very attractive for use in biodegradation processes for the treatment of textile effluents.

Although aluminum (Al) is considered innocuous to living beings, exposure to high concentrations can elicit damage. Al has been found to cause liver pathologies in various animal models. Its mechanisms of toxicity are unclear; presumably, it interacts with protein sulfhydryl groups and promotes reactive oxygen species formation causing oxidative stress. Lipid peroxidation, protein carbonyl content, and activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and caspase-3 were determined in liver of Cyprinus carpio exposed to 0.05, 120, and 239.42 mg Al L⁻¹ for 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h. Al induced increased lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl content as well as changes in enzymatic activity, indicating it elicits oxidative stress and apoptosis in common carp liver.

There is a pollution risk when disposing of post-remediation biomass from chelate-assisted metal phytoremediation. To assess this risk, we measured water extractable lead (Pb) in Brassica rapa tissues with ICP-MS, determined if chelated Pb was present with HPLC-MS, and identified Pb storage locations using electron microscopy with x-ray microanalysis. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (EDDS) were used to enhance Pb movement from contaminated soil to above ground B. rapa tissues. With Pb-EDTA, 92 % (5) of Pb was water extractable from dried tissues and complexed as Pb-EDTA. Electron microscopy and x-ray microanalysis showed Pb stored in xylem vessels. After composting of plant tissues, 79 % (2) of Pb was water extractable and complexed as Pb-EDTA. Total plant Pb accumulation was lower from soils amended with EDDS, but only 6.7 % (0.3) of Pb was water extractable from dried tissues and 55 % (25) from wet tissues of plants grown in EDDS-amended soils. Pb-EDDS was detected in tissues but not at quantifiable levels. This work emphasizes the need for proper treatment and disposal of contaminated post-remediation plant tissues, especially when using EDTA. Composting of plant tissues containing Pb-EDTA was shown to significantly reduce waste material volume and slightly reduce the water extractable fraction, but further immobilization of Pb would be necessary to minimize transport risk. Amending Pb-contaminated soils with EDDS can result in plant biomass with a lower potential to leach Pb into groundwater, but the lower Pb accumulation with EDDS would require longer phytoremediation time compared with EDTA. © 2013 Springer Science Media Dordrecht.

Kriging interpolation technique is adapted to create the mapping of surface ozone seasonality and trends across Europe during 1997–2006, based on European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme ground measurements. The climatology, the annual and seasonal trends and the altitude above sea level (asl) dependence were studied as well as the relation with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The mean seasonal cycle amplitude and seasonal maximum display an increasing gradient from northwest to southeast, with high levels in Austria and eastern Mediterranean. Significantly close to 0 positive trends appear in UK, Slovakia, southern Scandinavia and Austria in winter and autumn. In Northern Hemisphere winter (December–February), about 40 % of near-surface ozone variability in the western edge of Europe may be attributed to circulation changes and ozone precursors’ transport related to NAO.

Some Pseudomonas fluorescens strains, consistently isolated from the rhizosphere of wild plants grown in a soil that was highly polluted with illegal waste of smelter residues, were utilised for Mirabilis jalapa seed bioinoculation to verify their effects on seed germination and on promoting a higher heavy metal accumulation in the plant rhizosphere and/or uptake in the leaves. The high content of heavy metals in the soil induced a decrease in either the leaf dry weight or photosynthetic pigment concentration during all vegetative phase of M. jalapa. Bioinoculation with P. fluorescens strains significantly increased the germination of seeds and the root length in the contaminated soil. In some bacterial strain/seed combination, bioinoculation significantly increased the accumulation of heavy metals in M. jalapa rhizosphere. For Cd, the concentration of this metal in the rhizospheres of bioinoculated plants ranged from 270 to 910 μg g-1 of dry weight compared with 200 μg g-1 of dry weight for the non-coated plants. Two P. fluorescens strains, AA27 and MO49, which were isolated from Artemisia annua and Melilotus officinalis, respectively, induced a significantly higher rhizosphere availability also for Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn. However, despite the relevant accumulation of the heavy metals in the plant rhizosphere, generally the metal uptake into the leaves was rather low. Both analysis of variance and principal component analysis confirmed this finding. However, one P. fluorescens strain, CD1, which was isolated from the multi-metal accumulator Cynodon dactylon, significantly promoted the M. jalapa leaf uptake for Cr, Cu and Zn. The plant metal uptake assessment, confirmed the per se capability of M. jalapa to effectively uptake Cd (30 %) and Cu (12.72 %) from the rhizosphere to the leaves, whereas the uptake for the other metals was low: Ni (2.66 %), Zn (2.46 %), Cr (1.75 %), Pb (0.73 %). © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

There are significant concerns about the impact of heavy metal contamination in soils as a consequence of urbanisation and industrialisation in developing countries. Routine chemical analysis of soils is used to measure the total concentration of metals from point source or diffuse activities, but this fails to put in context the bioavailability of the analyte or the potential toxicity of multiple contaminants. Bacterial biosensors provide a useful tool for assessing the toxicity of the bioavailable fraction of heavy metals in soils and for complementing chemical analysis. There are few examples of genuine environmental applications of biosensors for pollutant diagnosis. This study applied constitutively marked biosensors (which were comprehensively characterised) to soils collected from across Northern China (60,000 km²). The biosensors were responsive to soils impacted by As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn when compared to ‘uncontaminated controls’. The response of the biosensor correlated with individual (or groups of) metals related to their concentration and source. The geo-accumulation index (I gₑₒ) assisted in explaining the biosensor response. The constitutively marked biosensors offered a focussed understanding of analyte bioavailability and placed in a relevant context the elemental analysis. When matrix-matched control samples can be collected, then such a biosensor procedure (as adopted here) is applicable to contrasting soils exposed to a wide range of contaminants. Biosensor applications complemented routine soil chemical analysis for this regional-scale study.

Quality of the essential commodity, water, is being compromised by contaminants originating from anthropogenic sources, industrial activities, agriculture, etc. Water scarcity and severe droughts in many regions of the world also represent a significant challenge to availability of this resource. Domestic rainwater harvesting, which involves collection and storage of water from rooftops and diverse surfaces, is successfully implemented worldwide as a sustainable water supplement. This review focuses on chemical and microbial qualities of domestic rainwater harvesting, with a particular focus on sources of chemical pollution and major pathogens associated with the water source. Incidences of disease linked to consumption and utilization of harvested rainwater are also discussed. In addition, various procedures and methods used for disinfection and treatment of harvested rainwater, such as implementation of filter systems (activated carbon, slow sand filtration, etc.), heat treatment, and chlorination, among others, are also presented.
