Black carbon and total organic carbon (TOC) along with organochlorines (OCs) were analyzed in soils from four sampling zones of Lesser Himalayan Region based on source proximity/anthropogenic influences along the altitude. CTO-375 method was used for BC analysis while OCs were analyzed by GC-MS/MS system. BC and TOC ranged between 0.16–1.77 and 6.8–41.3 mg g−1 while those of OCPs and PCBs ranged between 0.69 and 5.77 and 0.12–2.55 ng g−1, respectively. ∑DDTs were the dominant (87.9%) among OCPs while tri- and tetra- (65.5%) homologue groups among PCBs. Hexa-PCBs, however also showed higher contribution (20.4%) in the region. Source diagnostic ratios of DDE + DDD/DDT (0.1–1.53) indicated both fresh and old input while α-HCH/γ-HCH (0.19–2.49) showed presence of lindane in the region. Higher concentration of OCs were observed in Zone C at altitudinal range of 737–975 masl that are close to the human influences and potential sources of POPs. The results of linear regression analysis revealed potential input of BC in soil distribution of OC concentrations in the region.

The Red River Delta is a major agricultural production area of Vietnam with year-round use of pesticides for paddy rice cultivation and other production systems. The delta is protected from flooding, storm surges and saline water intrusion by a sophisticated river and sea-dyke system. Little is known about the effects of such a dyke system on pesticide pollution in the enclosed landscape. Our aim was to address this gap by i) determining pesticide prevalence in soils and sediments within a dyked agricultural area, and by ii) assessing whether and to which degree this dyke system might affect the spatial distribution of pesticides. After sampling paddy rice fields (topsoil) and irrigation ditches (sediment) perpendicular to the dyke in Giao Thuy district, we analysed 12 of the most commonly used pesticides in this area. In soils, we detected most frequently isoprothiolane (100% detection frequency), chlorpyrifos (85%) and propiconazole (41%) while in sediments isoprothiolane (71%) and propiconazole (71%) were most frequently found. Maximum concentrations reached 42.6 μg isoprotiolane kg⁻¹ in soil, and 35.1 μg azoxystrobin kg⁻¹ in sediment. Our results supported the assumption that the dyke system influenced residue distribution of selected pesticides. More polar substances increasingly accumulated in fields closer to the sea-dyke (R² = 0.92 for chlorpyrifos and 0.51 for isoprothiolane). We can thus support initiatives from local authorities to use the distance to dykes as a mean for deliniating zones of different environmental pollution; yet, the degree at which dykes influence pesticide accumulation appear to be compound specific.

The linkage between ambient air pollution exposure and occurrence of diabetes mellitus is not well defined. This study examined the association between exposure to fine particles (PM₂.₅) and the prevalence of diabetes among Chinese elderly people. We surveyed 11,504 adults aged ≥50 years in China, estimated the annual concentrations of ambient PM₂.₅ using a satellite-based model of aerosol optical depth information. We employed a generalized mixed effects model to examine the association between PM₂.₅ and the prevalence of diabetes and explored potential effect modifiers. We estimated diabetes burden attributable to ambient PM₂.₅ if the observed association is indeed causal. The diabetes prevalence among the participants was 6.5% (n = 745). Our analysis found a statistically significant association between PM₂.₅ and diabetes. The adjusted odds ratio was 1.27 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.12, 1.43) for each 10 μg/m³ increment in ambient PM₂.₅. Stratified analyses found a lower association among the participants with higher consumption of fruit. We estimated that 22.02% (95% CI: 8.59%, 43.29%) of the diabetes cases could be ascribable to ambient PM₂.₅. Our finding suggests that PM₂.₅ exposures could increase the risk of diabetes, and if causal, could be responsible for substantial burden of diabetes among the Chinese elderly; and higher intakes of fruit might reduce the harmful effects of PM₂.₅, however, due to the limitation of the cross-sectional study design, more studies are warranted to confirm this observation.

Prenatal disinfection by-products (DBPs) exposure is linked with adverse birth outcomes. Genetic susceptibility to DBP metabolism may modify the exposure-outcome associations.To investigate whether CYP2E1 and GSTZ1 genetic polymorphisms modified the associations of prenatal DBP exposures with adverse birth outcomes.Two biomarkers of DBP exposures including trihalomethanes (THMs) in blood and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) in urine were determined among 426 pregnant women from a Chinese cohort study. CYP2E1 (rs2031920, rs3813867, and rs915906) and GSTZ1 (rs7975) polymorphisms in cord blood were genotyped. Statistical interactions between prenatal DBP exposures and newborns CYP2E1 and GSTZ1 polymorphisms on birth outcomes (birth weight, birth length, and gestational age) were examined by multivariable linear regression with adjustment for potential confounders.We found that newborns CYP2E1 genetic polymorphisms (rs2031920 and rs3813867) modified the associations of maternal blood THMs or urinary TCAA levels with birth outcomes. However, these interactions were nonsignificant after Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons, except for the interaction between maternal blood BrTHMs [sum of dibromochloromethane (DBCM), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), and bromoform (TBM)] and newborns CYP2E1 gene rs2031920 polymorphisms on birth weight (P for interaction = 0.003).Newborns genetic variations of CYP2E1 rs2031920 may modify the impacts of prenatal BrTHM exposure on birth weight. This finding needs to be further confirmed.

With the ever-increasing amounts of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) accumulating from Canada's oil sands operations, its eventual release must be considered. As OSPW has been found to be both acutely and chronically toxic to aquatic organisms, remediation processes must be developed to lower its toxicity. Ozone treatment is currently being studied as a tool to facilitate the removal of organic constituents associated with toxicity. Biomarkers (e.g. gene expression) are commonly used when studying the effects of environmental contaminants, however, they are not always indicative of adverse effects at the whole organism level. In this study, we assessed the effects of OSPW exposure on developing zebrafish by linking gene expression to relevant cellular and whole organism level endpoints. We also investigated whether or not ozone treatment decreased biomarkers and any associated toxicity observed from OSPW exposure. The concentrations of classical naphthenic acids in the raw and ozonated OSPW used in this study were 16.9 mg/L and 0.6 mg/L, respectively. Ozone treatment reduced the total amount of naphthenic acids (NAs) in the OSPW sample by 92%. We found that exposure to both raw and ozonated OSPW had no effect on the survival of zebrafish embryos. The expression levels of biotransformation genes CYP1A and CYP1B were induced by raw OSPW exposure, with CYP1B being more highly expressed than CYP1A. In contrast, ozonated OSPW exposure did not increase the expression of CYP1A and only slightly induced CYP1B. A decrease in cardiac development and function genes (NKX2.5 and APT2a2a) was not associates with large changes in heart rate, arrhythmia or heart size. We did not find any indications of craniofacial abnormalities or of increased occurrence of apoptotic cells. Overall, our study found that OSPW was not overtly toxic to zebrafish embryos.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the adverse effects of wastewater effluents on freshwater crucian carp, Carassius auratus, inhabiting Sincheon stream using the integrated biomarker response (IBR) at the genotoxic (micronucleus [MN] test), oxidative stress (activity of catalase [CAT] and glutathione S-transferase [GST], and level of lipid peroxidation [LPO]), histopathological (degree of tissue changes [DTC]), and physiological (condition factor [CF] and liver somatic index [LSI]) levels. The CF and LSI were significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced in fish from downstream sites (DS1 and DS2) as compared to that of upstream (US) fish samples. Moreover, a significant increase in morphometric indices (DTC) was observed in C. auratus collected from downstream sites (p < 0.05) and histopathological responses showed the degree of pathogenicity in the order of liver > kidney > gills. The activities of CAT, GST, and LPO in fish from the DS1 and DS2 sites were notably increased in gills, liver, and kidney compared to that of fish from the US site. Additionally, the MN test level in C. auratus from the DS1 and DS2 were significantly increased (p < 0.05) when compared with that of the US site. Considering the higher bioaccumulation of Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Pb in gills, liver, and kidney of C. auratus collected from downstream sites compared to that of the upstream site (p < 0.05), the observed toxicity was likely attributable to metal accumulation. The multi-level IBR index was higher at the DS1 site (15.08) than at the DS2 (1.02) and the reference US (0.00) sites. Therefore, these findings demonstrated that wastewater effluent discharge induces significant DNA damage, oxidative stress, and tissue injuries in C. auratus and suggested that the multi-level IBR approach should be used to quantify these effects on fish in streams and rivers.

On-board emissions measurements were performed on a Handysize-class bulk carrier operating under real-world conditions. Emission factors (EFs) were determined for criteria pollutants such as NOₓ, CO, total hydrocarbons (THC), and PM; PM composition, including organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC), inorganic species, and a variety of organic compounds and VOC species (including alkanes, alkenes, single-ring aromatics, and oxygenated VOCs) were also analyzed. To investigate the impacts of engine type, fuel, and operating conditions on emissions, measurements were conducted on one main and one auxiliary engines using low- and high-sulfur fuels (LSF and HSF) under actual operating conditions, including at-berth, maneuvering, and cruising at different engine loads. OC was the most abundant PM component (contributing 45–65%), followed by sulfate (2–15%) and EC (1–20%). Compounds with 3 or 4 aromatic rings, including phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and benzo[b+k]fluoranthene, dominated the particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emitted from the ship, accounting for 69–89% of the total PAHs. Single-ring aromatics constituted 50–78% of the emitted VOCs and were dominated by toluene. In this study, switching from HSF (1.12% S) to LSF (0.38% S) reduced emitted PM by 12%, OC by 20%, sulfate by 71%, and particulate PAHs by 94%, but caused an increase in single-ring aromatics. The power-based EFs generally decreased with increasing engine loads. However, decreasing the ship engine load also reduced the vessel speed and, thus, decreased emissions over a given voyage distance. Herein, a Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) from 11 to 8–9 knots decreased NOₓ and PM emissions by approximately 33% and 36%, respectively, and OC, EC, sulfate, and particulate PAHs in PM emissions by 34%, 83%, 29%, and 11%. These data can be used to minimize uncertainty in the emission factors used in ship emissions calculations.

Exposure to ZnO-nanoparticles (NPs) in embryonic zebrafish reduces hatching rates which can be mitigated with dissolved organic material (DOM). Although hatching rate can be a reliable indicator of toxicity and DOM mitigation potential, a fish that has been exposed to ZnO-NPs or any other toxicant may also exhibit other abnormal phenotypes not readily detected by the unaided eye. In this study, we moved beyond hatching rate analysis to investigate the consequences of ZnO-NPs exposure on the nervous and vascular systems in developing zebrafish. Zebrafish exposed to ZnO-NPs (1–100 ppm) exhibited an array of cellular phenotypes including: abnormal secondary motoneuron (SMN) axonal projections, abnormal dorsal root ganglion development and abnormal blood vessel development. Dissolved Zn (<10 kDa) exposure also caused abnormal SMN axonal projections, but to a lesser extent than ZnO-NPs. The ZnO-NPs-induced abnormal phenotypes were reversed in embryos concurrently exposed with various types of DOM. In these acute mitigation exposure experiments, humic acid and carbohydrate, along with natural organic matter obtained from the Suwannee River in Georgia and Milwaukee River in Wisconsin, were the best mitigators of ZnO-NPs-induced motoneuron toxicity at 96 h post fertilization. Further experiments were performed to determine if the ZnO-NPs-induced, abnormal axonal phenotypes and the DOM mitigated axonal phenotypes could persist across generations. Abnormal SMN axon phenotypes caused by ZnO-NPs-exposure were detected in F1 and F2 generations. These are fish that have not been directly exposed to ZnO-NPs. Fish mitigated with DOM during the acute exposure (F0 generation) had a reduction in abnormal motoneuron axon errors in larvae of subsequent generations. Therefore, ZnO-NPs exposure results in neurotoxicity in developing zebrafish which can persist from one generation to the next. Mitigation with DOM can reverse the abnormal phenotypes in an acute embryonic exposure context, as well as across generations, resulting in healthy fish.

In many water-scarce countries, waste water is used for irrigation which poses a health risk to farmers and consumers. At the same time, it delivers nutrients to the farming systems. In this study, we tested the hypotheses that biochar can be used as a filter medium for waste water treatment to reduce pathogen loads. At the same time, the biochar is becoming enriched with nutrients and therefore can act as a fertilizer for soil amendment. We used biochar as a filter medium for the filtration of raw waste water and compared the agronomic effects of this “filterchar” (FC) and the untreated biochar (BC) in a greenhouse pot trial on spring wheat biomass production on an acidic sandy soil from Niger. The biochar filter showed the same removal of pathogens as a common sand filter (1.4 log units on average). We did not observe a nutrient accumulation in FC compared to untreated BC. Instead, P, Mg and K were reduced during filtration while N content remained unchanged. Nevertheless, higher biomass (Triticum L. Spp.) production in BC (+72%) and FC (+37%) treatments (20 t ha⁻¹), compared with the unamended control, were found. There were no significant differences in aboveground biomass production between BC and FC. Soil available P content was increased by BC (+106%) and FC (+52%) application. Besides, mineral nitrogen content was reduced in BC treated soil and to a lesser extent when FC was used. This may be explained by reduced sorption affinity for mineral nitrogen compounds on FC surfaces. Although the nutrients provided by FC decreased, due to leaching in the filter, it still yielded higher biomass than the unamended control.

Polar regions are fragile ecosystems threatened by both long-range pollution and local human contamination. In this context, the environmental distribution of the Personal Care Products (PCPs) represent a major knowledge gap. Following preliminary Antarctic studies, Fragrance Materials (FMs) were analyzed in the seawater and snow collected in the area of Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, to investigate local and long-range contamination. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), including Retene, were determined in parallel to help the identification of the governing processes. Concentrations of FMs up to 72 ng L⁻¹ were detected in the surface snow near the settlement and at increasing distances, in relation to the prevailing winds. PAHs follow a similar scheme, with levels of Retene up to 1.8 μg L⁻¹, likely deriving from the occurrence of this compound in the coal dust due to the previous mining activities in the area. The snow seasonal deposition of FMs and PAHs was estimated in a snowpit dug at the top of the Austre Brøggerbreen glacier, indicating the long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) of these compounds.
