A Fenton like advanced oxidation process (AOP) employing scrap zerovalent iron (SZVI) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was studied for industrial textile wastewater treatment from a textile manufacturing plant located at Medellín, Colombia (South America). The wastewater effluent studied contains a mixture of organic compounds resistant to conventional treatments. The effect of initial pH and SZVI concentration and H2O2 concentration were studied by a response surface methodology (RSM) Box-Behnken design of experiment (BBD). The combined SZVI/H2O2 process led to reductions of 95% color, 76% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 71% of total organic carbon (TOC) at optimal operating conditions of pH = 3, SZVI = 2000 mg/L and [H2O2] = 24.5 mM. Molecular weight distribution measurement (MWD), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, HPLC, biodegradability and toxicity were used to characterize the pollutants after the treatment process finding that the resulting effluent was polluted mostly by low molecular weight carboxylic acids. A remarkable biodegradability enhancement of the effluent was evidenced by a BOD5/COD ratio increase from 0.22 to 0.4; also, the SZVI/H2O2 process successfully reduced the toxicity from 60% to 20% of dead A. Salina crustaceans.

Seasonal and diurnal variations of carbonyl compounds were investigated in the ambient air of a mountainous city in China, from September 2014 to July 2015. The most abundant carbonyl compounds are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone, propionaldehyde and methacryladehyde (MACR), which were all measured in most samples. The average concentrations of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, propionaldehyde and MACR in the atmosphere in Changsha were broken down into each season: 6.57, 3.29, 3.66, 0.67 and 0.54 μg/m³ respectively during Spring, 14.09, 8.28, 9.02, 1.28 and 0.6 μg/m³, respectively during Summer, 9.24, 5.48, 8.62, 0.73 and 0.62 μg/m³, respectively during Autumn, and 5.88, 4.84, 7.84, 0.87 and 0.26 μg/m³ respectively during Winter. And majority of the species had higher concentration during noon, showing photochemical oxidation and human activities played an important role in diurnal variation. The highest average C1/C2 (formaldehyde/acetaldehyde) ratio was observed in summer (2.10) compared to those (1.33–2.03) in other seasons, implying the photochemical activities had a positive effect on increasing the ratio of C1/C2. In this study, the monthly concentration of formaldehyde produced from isoprene accounts for 4.8%–39.1% of formaldehyde in ambient air. Strong correlation among some carbonyl compounds means that they came from the same sources. Photochemical reaction was the main source of carbonyl compounds in summer and vehicular exhaust (gasoline and diesel engines) in winter. Changsha is not a completely urbanized city and it is rich in vegetation of broadleaf evergreen shrubs. Both atmospheric photochemical reactions and anthropogenic sources, including vehicular exhaust and industrial processes, dominate the levels of carbonyls. The ILTCR and HQ values of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde are 1.23E-04 and 1.34E-05, 2.80E-01 and 1.86E-01, respectively.

Urban trees have been assumed to effectively clean air particulate matter (PM), while the inter-species differences are not yet well defined, especially the PM chemical composition. In this study, PM from leaf surface and wax layer of 3 evergreen tree species (Juniper: Juniperus rigida; Black pine: Pinus tabuliformis var. mukdeais; Spruce: Picea koraiensis) were used for finding differences in PM adsorption and its compositional traits (characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrum and Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry). Possible improvement in PM removal was also evaluated by a detail whole city tree census and different scenarios of species adjustment data. We found that: 1) the amount of PM on juniper leaves was 5.73 g m−2, 2–2.5-fold higher than black pine and spruce (p < 0.05). Of them, 38.73%, 38.22%, and 23.11% were in the wax layer. 2) Compared with the explicit interspecies differences in PM quantity, more complex interspecies difference showed different patterns for different compositional traits. In general, leaf surface PM had higher O, Si, Al, Fe, N, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Cd, while the wax PM had higher C and Na contents (p < 0.05). 3) Association ordination found that the smaller leaf size, lower leaf water content, higher leaf area per unit mass, higher wax content, and larger stomatal openness aligned with the more PM adsorption by leaf, together with the higher amounts of CO stretching, O, Si, Al, N, heavy metals of Pb, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Cd in PM. 4) Compared with the other 2 species, increase of juniper percentage in urban forests is more effective for maximizing PM removal from air, accompanying more heavy metal removal but less crystalized minerals in PM. Our findings highlight that proper species configuration in urban afforestation could maximize the air PM removal capacity.

Urban green spaces have the potential to mitigate and regulate atmospheric pollution. However, existing studies have primarily focused on the adsorption effect of different plants on atmospheric particulate matter (PM), whereas the effect of green space on PM has not been adequately addressed. In this study, the effect of different urban green space structures and configurations on PM was investigated through the 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model ENVI-met by treating the green space as a whole based on field monitoring, and at the same time, the regulatory effect of green space on PM was examined by integrating information about the forest stand, PM concentration, and meteorological factors. The results show that the green space primarily affected wind speed but had no significant effect on relative humidity, temperature, or wind direction (P > 0.05). The PM concentration was significantly positively correlated with the relative humidity (P < 0.01), significantly negatively correlated with temperature (P < 0.05), but not significantly correlated with wind speed and direction (P > 0.05). Comparison with the measured values reveals that the ENVI-met model well reflected the differences in PM concentrations between different green spaces and the effect of green space on PM. In different green space structures, the uniform-type structure performed rather poorly at purifying PM, the concave-shaped structure performed the best, and the purifying effectiveness of the incremental-type and convex-shaped structure of green space was higher in the rear region than in the front region; in contrast, the degressional-type green space structure was prone to cause aggregation of the PM in the middle region. Broadleaf and broadleaf mixed forests had a better purifying effectiveness on PM than did coniferous forests, mixed coniferous forests, and coniferous broadleaf mixed forests. The above results are of great significance for urban planning and maximizing the use of urban green space resources.

Humic-like substances (HULIS) account for a considerable fraction of water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) in ambient fine particulates (PM2.5) over the world. However, systemic studies regarding the chemical characteristics, sources and redox activity of HULIS are still limited. In this study, the mass concentration, optical properties, and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generation potential of HULIS were investigated in PM2.5 samples collected in Hong Kong during 2011–2012, and they all showed higher levels on days under regional pollution than on days under long range transport (LRT) pollution and local emissions. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis was conducted regarding the mass concentration and dithiothreitol (DTT) activity of HULIS. Four primary sources (i.e. marine vessels, industrial exhaust, biomass burning, and vehicle emissions), and two secondary sources (i.e. secondary organic aerosol formation and secondary sulfate) were identified. Most sources showed higher contributions to both the mass concentration and DTT activity of HULIS on regional days than on LRT and local days, except that marine vessels had a higher contribution on local days than the other two synoptic conditions. Secondary processes were the major contributor to HULIS (54.9%) throughout the year, followed by biomass burning (27.4%) and industrial exhaust (14.7%). As for the DTT activity of HULIS, biomass burning (62.9%) and secondary processes (25.4%) were found to be the top two contributors. Intrinsic ROS-generation potential of HULIS was also investigated by normalizing the DTT activity by HULIS mass in each source. HULIS from biomass burning were the most DTT-active, followed by marine vessels; while HULIS formed through secondary processes were the least DTT-active. For the optical properties of HULIS, multiple linear regression model was adopted to evaluate the contributions of various sources to the light absorbing ability of HULIS. Biomass burning was found to be the only source significantly associated with the light absorbing property of HULIS.

The ultra-high Cd polluted environment is a special habitat in nature. Analysis of the biological adaptation and resistance mechanism of Auxenochlorella protothecoides UTEX234 to ultra-high Cd stress would offer some inspiring understanding on Cd detoxification mechanism and help discovering highly active bioremediation agents. In this study, integrated analyses of the transcriptome, multi-physiological and biochemical data and fatty acid profilings of UTEX2341 were performed for the first time. It was found that exogenous Ca ions could alleviate Cd stress. Manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase and peroxidase also participated in intracellular detoxification. And non-enzymatic antioxidants rather than one specific enzymatic antioxidant were suggested to be used as “core antioxidants”, which witnessed better performance in Cd detoxification. In addition, Cd stress improved sixteen alkane value and biofuel yield and quality.

Determinations of the mobility of metals from tailings is a critical part of any assessment of the environmental impacts of mining activities. The leaching of thorium and uranium from the tailings of different processing stages of a niobium mine was investigated for several pH, ionic strengths and concentrations of natural organic matter (NOM). The pH of the leaching solution did not have a noticeable impact on the extraction of Th, however, for pH values below 4, increased U mobilization was observed. Similarly, only a small fraction of Th (0.05%, ≤15 μg kg⁻¹) and U (1.22%, ≤6 μg kg⁻¹) were mobilized from the tailings in the presence of environmentally relevant concentrations of Ca, Mg or Na. However, in the presence of 10 mg L⁻¹ of fulvic acid, much higher concentrations of ca. 700 μg kg⁻¹ of Th and 35 μg kg⁻¹ of U could be extracted from the tailings. Generally, colloidal forms of Th and dissolved forms of U were mobilized from the tailings, however, in the presence of the fulvic acid, both dissolved and colloidal forms of the two actinides were observed. Single Particle ICP-MS was used to confirm the presence of Th (and U) containing colloids where significant numbers (up to 10⁷ mL⁻¹) of Th and U containing colloids were found, even in 0.2 μm filtered extracts. Although mass equivalent diameters in the range of 6–13 nm Th and 6–9 nm for U could be estimated (based upon the presence of an oxyhydroxide), most of the colloidal mass was attributed to larger (>200 nm) heterocomposite particles.

Excess ammonia (NH₃) emissions and deposition can have negative effects on air quality and terrestrial ecosystems. Identifying NH₃ sources is a critical step for effectively reducing NH₃ emissions, which are generally unregulated around the world. Stable nitrogen isotopes (δ¹⁵N) of ammonium (NH₄⁺) in precipitation have been directly used to partition NH₃ sources. However, nitrogen isotope fractionation during atmospheric processes from NH₃ sources to sinks has been previously overlooked. Here we measured δ¹⁵NNH₄⁺ in precipitation on a daily basis at a rural forested site in Northeast China over three years to examine its seasonal pattern and attempt to constrain the NH₃ sources. We found that the NH₄⁺ concentrations in precipitation ranged from 5 to 1265 μM, and NH₄⁺ accounted for 65% of the inorganic nitrogen deposition (20.0 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹) over the study period. The δ¹⁵N values of NH₄⁺ fluctuated from −24.6 to +16.2‰ (average −6.5‰) and showed a repeatable seasonal pattern with higher values in summer (average −2.3‰) than in winter (average −16.4‰), which could not be explained by only the seasonal changes in the NH₃ sources. Our results suggest that in addition to the NH₃ sources, isotope equilibrium fractionation contributed to the seasonal pattern of δ¹⁵NNH₄⁺ in precipitation, and thus, nitrogen isotope fractionation should be considered when partitioning NH₃ sources based on δ¹⁵NNH₄⁺ in precipitation.

Plastic pollution is prevalent worldwide and affects marine wildlife from urbanized beaches to pristine oceanic islands. However, the ecological basis and mechanisms that result in marine animal ingestion of plastic debris are still relatively unknown, despite recent advances. We investigated the relationship between scavenging behavior and plastic ingestion using green turtles, Chelonia mydas, as a model. Diet analysis of C. mydas showed that sea turtles engaging in scavenging behavior ingested significantly more plastic debris than individuals that did not engage in this foraging strategy. We argue that opportunistic scavenging behavior, an adaptive behavior in most marine ecosystems, may now pose a threat to a variety of marine animals due to the current widespread plastic pollution found in oceans.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) and phthalate esters (PAEs) are extensively used as additives in commercial and household products. However, knowledge on human exposure to OPEs and PAEs remains limited in China. This study aimed to investigate OPE and PAE metabolites in urine samples of primiparas and to evaluate the cumulative risk of OPE and PAE exposure. A total of 8 OPE metabolites and 11 PAE metabolites were measured in urine samples of 84 primiparas from Shenzhen, China. The OPE metabolites were found in at least 72% of the urine samples with bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (BCEP) being the dominant analogue. Among the 11 PAE metabolites, mono-n-butyl phthalate (mBP) was the most abundant analogue and had a median concentration (139 μg/L) greater than those reported in urine samples from other countries and regions. A significant, positive correlation was found between Σ₈OPEMs (the sum of 8 OPE metabolites) and body mass index (BMI). The urinary concentration of Σ₁₁PAEMs (the sum of 11 PAE metabolites) was positively associated with the time of computer using by the primiparas. The estimated daily intakes (EDI) of tris(2-chlorethyl) phosphate (TCEP, the parent chemical of BCEP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP, the parent chemical of mBP) were determined to be 0.47 and 9.14 μg/kg bw/day, respectively. The 95th percentile EDI values for TCEP and DnBP both exceeded their corresponding reference doses. Twelve and fifty-five percentage of the primiparas were estimated to have HIRfD (hazard index corresponding to reference doses) and HITDI (hazard index corresponding to tolerable daily intake) values exceeding 1 for OPEs and PAEs, respectively, suggesting a relatively high exposure risk.
