Development of driving cycles for dynamometer control software corresponding to peculiarities of Latvia

Performing biofuel use studies, a large number of parameters that characterize engine operation under different conditions and with different fuel mixtures have to be identified. The real driving conditions are usually simulated by driving cycles on a laboratory chassis dynamometer. There are two major categories of driving cycles: legislative and non-legislative. From the viewpoint of cycle formation there are also two ways. One is composed of various driving modes of constant acceleration, deceleration and speed, and is referred to as modal or polygonal. The other type is derived from actual driving data and is called as 'real world' cycle. There is a strong agreement among researchers that driving characteristics of each city are unique because of different vehicle fleet composition, driving behaviour and road network topography. It is therefore better to develop own driving cycles than using driving cycles developed elsewhere. The aim of this investigation is to develop driving cycles or models for dynamometer control software corresponding to peculiarities of Latvia. The procedure for cycle development and fuel consumption and exhaust emissions measurement was worked out. Using real driving data on the Jelgava streets, models simulating driving in different urban areas were constructed. The model quality was determined using vehicle driving parameters and fuel consumption measurement results from both the road and laboratory tests. Since the obtained data coincidence of all the parameters exceeded 98%, the elaborated cycles can be used for the biofuel use efficiency determination.

This experimental study assesses the influence of ignition timing on emissions from a production four cylinder port injection spark ignition engine. The aim of this research was to evaluate the necessity of ignition timing correction when the regular gasoline vehicle is being adapted for the use of E85 fuel. Tests were conducted in the Alternative Fuels Research Laboratory of Latvia University of Agriculture in December 2013. The engine was fuelled with the ethanol-gasoline blend E85 or the commercial gasoline A95. The engine was tested within a vehicle in a chassis dynamometer in steady state conditions, which resemble driving at 50 km hE-1 and 90 km hE-1. The original engine control unit was replaced with a programmable one. Engine-out and tailpipe exhaust gas samples were taken and analysed with a FTIR-type analyser AVL SESAM. Carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), acetaldehyde and unburned ethanol emission volumetric share is presented. CO, HC and acetaldehyde emissions were not affected by variation of the ignition timing within the tested range. NOx and ethanol emissions were reduced with the ignition timing retard. The emissions of CO, HC and NOx were reduced, when the engine was fuelled with the E85 fuel, comparing with the gasoline use. Ignition timing, optimized for the gasoline, was found suitable for the E85 fuel from the emission analyses point.

The paper discusses heat transfer and the step response of a low-power induction motor to no-load mode under fan cooled and naturally cooled conditions. In Latvia University of Agriculture (LUA) in the electric drive laboratory the experimental tests were performed on a 1.1 kW totally enclosed fan cooled three phase induction motor with a fan mounted on a shaft for fan cooled conditions and with a fan taken off for naturally cooled conditions. The transient temperatures are measured in nine points of the stator end windings and in two points of the stator frame using thermocouples. Temperature is measured by using K type thermocouples and Pico-Log TC – 08 data logger. The current and voltage are measured by using Simple Logger II L562 two channel data logger. Measurement data are processed and archived using data loggers Pico-Log Recorder, Simple Logger II and Data View software. The experimental test results show that ventilation plays an essential role in the heating process of small power induction motors. Mathematical and virtual models of induction motor windings heating are represented to simulate the heating process of induction motor under no-load mode and different cooling conditions.

The paper contains description of the working principles and evaluation of the operational parameters of the commercially available fuel conversion adapter, intended to adapt gasoline fuelled spark ignition (SI) engine for use of high ethanol content blended fuel, known as E85. Commercially available gasoline and E85 fuel were used as test fuels. Production automobile, equipped with 1.8 litre 4 cylinder SI port fuel injection (PFI) engine was tested on the roll-type eddy-current chassis dynamometer in wide open throttle (WOT) constant speed mode. High precision fuel consumption measurement system AVL KMA Mobile was used. Engine operating parameters, used for evaluation of the efficiency of the fuel conversion adapter was engine torque (T), engine brake power (Pb ), air/fuel equivalence ratio (λ), specific fuel consumption (SFC) and engine thermal efficiency (ηt ). Analysis of engine operational parameters showed successful operation of fuel conversion adapter with E85 fuel, resulting in increase of engine peak torque by 4.4%, increase of energy efficiency in whole tested engine speed range up to 6.1% but increase of specific fuel consumption by approximately 22%, when compared with the gasoline use.

Root rot caused by Heterobasidion spp. is one of the most important pathogens in Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands in Latvia. It is estimated that in Latvia on average 22.9% of Norway spruce stumps are infected with Heterobasidion spp. The aim of this study was to compare four different electronic devices for Heterobasidion root rot detection in Norway spruce. In the autumn of 2009, in a sample plot located in the forests of Kalsnava district 27 trees were used to compare the possibility of instruments to detect root rot. The results show that IML-RESI F400 accuracy for detecting root rot in Norway spruce is high and the instrument is usable for detecting root rot, but additional accumulators are needed for large sample plots. Rotfinder’s accuracy for detecting root rot varies from probe to probe taken from one tree. Conditiometer AS-1 and Arbo-Sonic decay detector show slightly higher average values for infected trees, but the difference for both instruments between healthy and decayed trees is not significant, thus leaving the usage of instruments questionable.

Tracked forwarders is one of the solutions for the forest soils with poor bearing capacity providing ability to use well-known technology for reasonable cost to improve accessibility of forest resources. Tracked forwarders are not common in forest nowadays and only a few models are produced serially. The ProSilva F2/2 is a new middle-class forwarder, whose frontal tracks are replaced with big tires, ensuring large contact surface, increased mobility of the machine and significantly reduced mass without loosing the load capacity (15 tonnes). The aim of the study was to evaluate productivity, soil impact and cost of the roundwood forwarding using the ProSilva F2/2. The study was conducted in Finland. Productivity (time per crane cycle, split into operations and loads), load size, depth of ruts and soil compaction were estimated during the study. According to the study results, the average productivity is 16 m**3 per hour (driving distance to a landing site 200 m, driving speed 2.8 km hE-1, average load 9.7 m**3). The productivity can be significantly increased by more efficient utilization of the load capacity and by using gripper with the tilt function. The length of ruts on peat soil (56 m haE-1) does not exceed the permitted threshold values in Latvia. The compaction of soil took place mainly in topsoil, no changes in soil density were observed in deeper soil layers. The prime cost of forwarding according to the preliminary estimates is 2.5 € mE-3 if the annual production is at least 62000 m**3. Utilization rate is important to keep forwarding cost low.

The aim of the study was to compare the productivity and logging costs using the small class harvester Vimek 404 T5 in thinning of birch plantations and young coniferous stands. It was found in the study that due to a lower fuel consumption, maintenance costs and initial investment, the cost of a working hour of the harvester Vimek 404 T5 is significantly smaller than the cost of a working hour of the middle class harvester. The study confirmed that Vimek 404 T5 is a suitable harvester for thinning in a birch plantation; the study also confirmed the previous conclusions about the main advantages of Vimek harvester compared to a middle class harvester in the first thinning – low fuel consumption and costs of maintenance, high productivity and equipment compactness, which allow to reduce the strip road area. The average productivity for Vimek 404 T5 in birch plantation was 6.2 m**3 per productive hour, but in young conifer stand the productivity was 4.9 m**3 per productive hour. The average stem volume in the birch plantation was 0.06 m**3, but in conifer stand 0.05 m**3. Productivity for the same dimension trees in the birch plantation is not significantly different from the data obtained in the thinning of the coniferous stands.

This paper investigates the effect of intake runner design on pressure wave propagation and reflection in sparkignited internal combustion (IC) engine. These events are known to leave a noticeable influence on the overall engine performance therefore the aim of this study is to evaluate how changes in intake runner geometry affect pressure oscillations and volume flow rate. Time-dependent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was carried out to determine how these changes affect the pressure oscillations during a full engine cycle at constant crankshaft speed. Steady state CFD analysis at constant pressure differential was carried out to evaluate the effect on volume flow rate. The simulations were carried out in SolidWorks Flow Simulation environment. Honda CRF450R motorcycle engine was used to define the initial conditions and basic intake runner design. Intake air speed at port entrance cross-section was calculated based on engine parameters and operating speed. The average pressure values with respect to physical time were measured and graphed across the intake port opening cross-section. Six different intake runner designs were compared. It was concluded that the runner taper angle has influence on pressure wave-length but internal geometry (steps, curvature and taper angle) has influence on volume flow rate. It was observed that cylindrical intake runner design produced an increase in pressure wave-length but a cylindrical section of the intake runner with a stepped transition to tapered extension produced a slight increase in pressure wave amplitude.

This paper investigates the effect of fuel bias between the primary and secondary injectors of a staged fuel injection system on the performance of a high output single cylinder spark-ignited internal combustion engine. It is known that staged fuel injection systems are widely used in motorsports applications where high engine speeds are coupled with high power output, therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of a secondary fuel injector installed on a Honda CRF450R single cylinder four-stroke gasoline engine. The said engine was equipped with a programmable Performance Electronics PE3-SP0 control unit and a secondary fuel injector identical to that of OE. Power measurements were carried out on a Dynojet-200ix chassis dynamometer in four different modes with altered fuel proportion between injectors, with each measurement being repeated three times. Ambient conditions were monitored with Performance Electronics Pe3Monitor software and the fuel map was adjusted to produce a stable air-fuel ratio. The results were averaged and compared numerically and by coefficient of correlation. It was observed that the data as obtained from the chassis dynamometer software SportDyno 4 contains a lot of noise, both mechanical and electrical in nature, and the changes in power output are highly dependent on engine and equipment temperature. The best results were obtained by using both injectors with fuel proportion biased to the front of the system.

In order to improve competitiveness in today’s business environment, farmers also have to think about the rapid technological development in their enterprises. The most important factor that can positively influence the progress of the agricultural sector is the application of modern, efficient and labour-saving technologies at the various stages of crop growing and processing. Introduction of robotics in the farming processes emerges as one of the options. Current state of technologies allows only a few tasks processed by robots to be technologically and economically viable; the most relevant example is lawn mowing robots. One of the issues that prevent widespread use of robots in agriculture is that there are still no regulations or standards in the robotic sector for the industry to allow each robot manufacturer to follow them, such as mountable equipment communication protocols, dimensions of chassis and body, control systems including sensors and actuators etc. Each robot developer chooses his own approach and interpretation in robot protocols and modules. This article presents a conceptual design of mobile robot “Formica 01” for various agricultural applications. A prototype of the proposed design has been developed and in the article various cases of its usage on strawberry fields have been described.
