Sweet potato wastes in major pig producing districts in Uganda: an opportunity for investment in silage technologies

This study was undertaken to assess the potential for sweet potato silage making business by estimating sweet potato vines and root wastage and assessing the economic feasibility of investing in sweet potato silage. Information was collected through key informant interviews, secondary data review, sweet potato root peeling and weighing, focus group discussions with pig and sweet potato producers covering a sample of 180 farmers. Semi-structured interviews with 240 respondents (120 sweet potato farmers, 60 pig farmers and 60 sweet potato traders) were also conducted. The results showed that sweet potato production is seasonal with substantial wastage of sweet potato components existing across the various nodes of the sweet potato value chain. The study concludes that there is an opportunity for investment in sweet potato silage business that has the potential to reduce wastage of sweet potato and bridge the feed scarcity gap faced by pig farmers.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the agricultural plants that is suitable substrate for biogas production. Fresh as well as ensiled maize can be used as biogas substrate. Practically, mainly maize silage is used because fresh maize is available only for short term during the vegetative period. The paper is aimed to determine the impact of ensiling on substrate composition of maize hybrids. A field trial was carried out in the Research and Study farm ''Vecauce'' of the Latvia University of Agriculture (LLU) in 2008 and 2009. Ten (in 2008) to eleven (2009) maize hybrids with different maturity rating according to FAO numbers (FAO 180 – 340) were harvested at three different times beginning on 5 September at fourteen-day intervals. Chopped maize samples of 1-3 kg were ensiled in plastic silos. Samples of fresh and ensiled (for at least 90 days) maize were analyzed detecting 14 parameters in the Scientific Laboratory of Agronomy Research of LLU using standard methods. Our results showed that ensilaging influence on organic dry matter and hemi-cellulose content was not substantial. High (p is less than 0.05) correlation between organic dry matter content of fresh and ensiled samples was noted. The crude protein, crude fibre, ash and cellulose concentration was greater in the ensiled samples if compared with fresh maize samples in 2008 and 2009. After ensilaging process neutral detergent fibre (NDF) concentration was higher compared with fresh samples in 2009 but lower in 2008.

Biogas can be produced from industrial by-products, household waste and raw materials of agricultural origin. Agricultural resources can be agricultural by-products, for example, manure as well as biomass of energy crops. The objective of the trial was to evaluate the methane outcome from the winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) silage depending on the variety and the growth stage during the harvest. The trial was carried out in State Stende Cereals Breeding Institute in the autumn of 2009. The biomass of three varieties of winter wheat, harvested at three stages of maturity - at the beginning of flowering (GS 60-62), early milk ripeness (GS 70-72), and early yellow ripeness (GS 80-82) - was ensiled in laboratory conditions. The silage was analysed 180 days after it had been ensiled. The biogas and methane outcome in laboratory conditions (in Germany) was determined for samples of silage made from winter wheat variety ‘Skalmeje’ at all harvesting times according to VDI 4630 method. The theoretically obtainable methane outcome was calculated for silage samples of all varieties by using the results of chemical composition analysis (crude protein, crude fibre, crude fat, N-free-extracts). The highest methane outcome from one ton of winter wheat silage was acquired by harvesting and ensiling the biomass during the flowering stage. However, evaluating the methane yield from one hectare, the best results were obtained by harvesting and ensiling the biomass at the early milk stage of ripeness and at the stage of early yellow ripeness.

Cattle fattening, first of all, should be beneficial for a farmer, therefore, in Latvia more suitable are such average intense fattening methods as fattening with grass fodder. In the world, demand for beef, produced in an environmentally friendly manner, ensuring the appropriate animal welfare conditions, is growing. The aim of the study was to find out the fattening results of Hereford (HE) and Aberdinanguss (AB) pure-bred bulls and their crosses when fed with grass fodder. The study was conducted in 2015 and 2016 within the framework of the project ‘Baltic Grassland Beef’. AB crossbreed bulls were slaughtered when they were 519 ± 16.6 days old, but HE pure-bred bulls − 584 ± 7.3 days old (p ≤ 0.05). The biggest live weight and slaughter weight showed HE crossbreed group bulls – 557 ± 19.4 kg and 293 ± 12.2 kg, respectively, but the biggest live weight daily gain from birth to slaughter was observed to AB pure–bred group bulls – 952 ± 24.7. Carcass conformation score in muscle development was the highest for AB pure–bred group bulls. Their average conformation score was 3.2 ± 0.08 points. In terms of fat score development, carcass with the best quality was obtained from HE crossbreed group bulls, the resulting fat score – 2.4 ± 0.10. The obtained results prove that pure-bred and crossbreed bulls used in this research are suitable for fattening with grass in the conditions of Latvia

Given the high amounts of apple rejected for commercialization its use as alternative feed for ruminants should be considered. This study was designed to investigate the nutritive value of apple pulp-wheat straw mixtures. Chemical composition, in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) and gas production profiles of ensiled mixtures containing 85 (M85), 70 (M70), and 50% (M50) of apple pulp were studied at 0, 15, 30 and 45 days. Fermentation quality was assessed by pH, lactic acid, ethanol and acetate. The results showed that non fibre carbohydrates (NFC) decreased along the storage period while DM stabilized after 30 days. It was also shown that pH increased along the storage period and the highest values for ethanol and acetic acid concentrations were observed in the apple pulp mixtures (Apple). Within mixtures, IVOMD decreased along the storage period, being however similar across mixtures after long periods of storage. Gas production analysis indicated that easily fermentable components (VFA) and the less easily fermentable constituents (VFB) decreased along the storage period, but VFB showed no differences between mixtures for the first two storage periods. Results suggest the possibility of reducing ethanol concentration of apple pulp silages through the incorporation of fibrous components; however silage additives to limit fermentation of sugars into ethanol should be used to ensure the course of the conservation process.

Smallholders with dual-purpose cattle production systems in most Central America experience a shortage of forages during the dry season (4-8 month. As a result, substantially lower milk production and weight gain occurs. Dual-purpose operations seeking to maximize milk and beef production in the dry season can produce and feed hay or silage to their livestock. The increase in milk and beef production due to feeding hay or silage during the dry season on commercial dual-purpose cattle productions systems, the production costs of making silage or hay and the benefits as a result of feeding silage or hay are estimated and compared in Honduras and Costa Rica. Due to feeding silage or hay, farmers in Honduras and Costa Rica have increased milk production during the dry season. The costs of feeding hay are lower in both countries, although farmers feed a higher amount (kg DM/cow/ day) than silage. Feeding silage or hay to milking cows is profitable in both countries. The income-cost ratio and the net benefit ($/ cow/day) due to feeding these feedstuffs are positive. Farmers with milking cows in Honduras realise a higher income-cost ratio and net benefit due to feeding silage and hay than farmers in Costa Rica. Likewise, beef cows or young livestock supplemented with these feeding alternatives don't loose weight during the dry season. In Honduras as well in Costa Rica, it is profitable to feed silage or hay to beef cows or young livestock. Currently, no silage and a small hay market exist in Honduras. Possibly, these will develop due to an increasing demand for these profitable feedstuffs. In Costa Rica thanks to the efforts of agricultural organisations, a hay market of different qualities is developing.

The quality of forage grass mostly depends on the harvesting time. In early vegetation stages, grasses have a high protein and energy content and high dry matter digestibility. The data on the protein content and energy value of different grasses gives a possibility to choose the best conservation method. Changes in the chemical composition of perennial grasses during the vegetation were investigated at the Laboratory of Biochemistry of the LUA Research Centre "Sigra". The dynamics of the content of amino acids was evaluated.

The aim of the experiment reported here was to evaluate the effects of an inoculant SIL-ALL**4x4 on the fermentation quality and chemical composition of silage made from meadow-fescue and meadow-foxtail. Inoculant SIL-ALL**4x4 provided the good quality of silage in all stages of maturity. Lactic acid fermentation of inoculated silage was very extensive, especially in the stages of ear formation of meadow-fescue. The results indicated that the use of inoculant improved fermentation and silage hygienic quality.

To study the organic matter digestibility of feeds 22 in vivo and in vitro digestion experiments were carried out by using DAISY II filter bags system in the Eerika Experimental Farm of the Estonian Agricultural University in 1997-2001. In the in vivo experiments 4 rams and special boxes were used. The in vitro experiments were carried out and the chemical composition of feeds was determined in the laboratory of the Department of Animal Nutrition in the Institute of Animal Science by methods generally recognized in the EU. The objective of the study was the comparison of organic matter digestibility of feeds measured by in vivo methods, by DAISY II filter bags method and of that calculated by acid detergent fibre or neutral detergent fibre.
