Visible and infrared absorption spectra of covering materials for solar collectors
2008
Pelece, I., Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Jelgava (Latvia)
Use of solar energy increases every year. In Latvia, solar energy is used mainly by solar collectors. The main part of the solar collector is the absorber, but not less important is the covering material which protects the absorber from the cooling impact of the wind. This cover must be transparent for solar radiation, but opaque for thermal radiation of the absorber, which is at greater wavelengths. Therefore it is important to measure absorption spectra of possible covering materials at visible and infrared wavelength ranges. Absorption spectra have been measured for several materials: glass, polythene, Plexiglas, and cells Plexiglas. Absorption spectra for all these materials are measured in three ranges: ultraviolet – visible (UV – VIS): 250 – 1000 nm; near infrared (NIR): 700 – 110 nm; infrared (IR): 1200 – 8000 nm. UV-VIS spectra with the ‘Ocean Optics’ device HR-4000 have been measured, but NIR and IR – with ‘Bruker’ Furje spectrometer EQUINOX 55. Evaluation of absorption spectra showed that the most suitable material (from the considered) for covering of solar collectors is Plexiglas.

2013
Stapkevica, M., University of Latvia, Riga (Latvia) | Vincevica-Gaile, Z., University of Latvia, Riga (Latvia) | Klavins, M., University of Latvia, Riga (Latvia)
Plants are components of ecosystem that transfer elements from abiotic to biotic environments. Several elements, such as As, Cd, Hg, Pb, can be considered as food chain contaminants. Simultaneously, some essential micronutrients (e.g., Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn) at high concentrations may become toxic to both, plants and animals. To secure the aim to describe the uptake of metals by food crop species such vegetables, as radish Raphanus sativus L., leafy lettuce Lactuca sativa L. and dill Anethum graveolens L., were grown in soils of various grading composition and type. There were five soil types selected. A part of soils was contaminated with copper sulphate solution at different target concentrations, while another part was contaminated with mixture of metal (Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn) compounds. In half of treated soil samples the solution of humic substances was added. Harvested vegetables were dried, and after wet digestion with nitric acid quantitative analysis of metal concentrations was performed by use of atomic absorption spectrometry. The highest concentration of copper was detected in vegetable samples grown in soils with less organics, thereby indicating the importance of soil organic matter to metal transfer routes and accumulation rates in plants. Analysis of lettuce grown in soils contaminated with the mixture of metal compounds revealed that zinc was a metal absorbed more intensively, but metal uptake and accumulation was less intensive from peat if compared with other soils.

2012
Masaitis, G., Aleksandras Stulginskis Univ., Akademija, Kauno reg. (Lithuania) | Mozgeris, G., Aleksandras Stulginskis Univ., Akademija, Kauno reg. (Lithuania)
The aim of the study was to investigate the properties of hyperspectral reflectance data of Scots pine (Pinus Sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea Abies L.). The hyperspectral reflectance data was obtained under laboratory conditions from the last season’s needles of healthy 20 year-old trees from the same site. Hyperspectral data was acquired using Themis Vision Systems LLC VNIR 400H portable scanning hyperspectral imaging camera in 400-1000 nm range. Methods of analysis of variance, discriminant analysis and principal component analysis were applied for the hyperspectral data analysis. Differences between Scots pine and Norway spruce reflection data were examined. The most informative spectral range for Norway spruce – Scots pine spectral separation was determined at 666.5 nm – 668.4 nm, most informative waveband - 667.1 nm. Reflectance variations among individual trees of the same species as well as differences in spectral response between needles from northern – southern crown exposition were tested. A significant variation in spectral response of needles of Norway spruce was detected across the whole measured spectral range (955 wavebands) for each sample tree. However, significant variation of spectral response of needles of Scots pine was detected only in 356 out of 955 wavebands for each sample tree. Depending on the crown exposition to the North or South, the reflectance of Scots pine needles differed significantly in 900 spectral bands. No significant differences were detected in 833 wavebands for Norway spruce.

Pilecka, J., Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Jelgava (Latvia) | Grinfelde, I., Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Jelgava (Latvia) | Valujeva, K., Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Jelgava (Latvia) | Straupe, I., Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Jelgava (Latvia) | Purmalis, O., University of Latvia, Riga (Latvia)
The growing economy with following industrialization and urbanization has led to environmental contamination with trace elements worldwide. In urban environment, the large inputs of anthropogenic contaminants in atmosphere are arising from mobile and stationary sources. The snow sample analysis is one of methods to monitor air contamination with heavy metals in urban areas. The aim of this research is to analyse heavy metal contamination and distribution in urban environment of Jelgava city. The samples were collected twice in January and February. Snow samples were collected in 20 urban area sampling plots and one natural area sampling plot with three repetitions taken from 1.0 to 1.5 kg of snow. The concentration of trace elements was estimated in 126 melted and filtrated snow water using inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP-OES). The average heavy metals and nutrients concentrations were calculated for each sample. The concentrations data of trace elements were analysed using agglomerative hierarchical clustering method. The results show differences between results in January and February. The differences are related to anthropogenic impact intensity differences during the exposition periods of snow. The clustering results of snow samples taken in January show three clusters, but snow samples taken in February show four clusters.

Lauzike, K., Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, Akademija, Kedainiai distr. (Lithuania) | Samuoliene, G., Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, Akademija, Kedainiai distr. (Lithuania);Aleksandras Stulginskis Univ., Akademija, Kauno reg. (Lithuania)
The impact of light penetration into crown and the effect of rootstocks and distance between trees on photosynthetic behaviour were analysed. Apple cultivar ‘Auksis’ was grafted onto dwarfing rootstock P60 and super-dwarfing rootstock P22 and planted at different distances (3 × 1 m, 3 × 0.75 m and 3 × 0.5 m). Nitrogen balance index and photochemical reflectance index were measured at two heights: 0.8 m above ground inside the canopy and 1.5 m above ground outside the canopy; specific leaf area, fresh and dry weight were evaluated from all canopy. The significantly positive effect of dwarfing rootstock P60 on all tested indices was observed comparing to P22 rootstock. Increasing density between trees lead to a decreased specific leaf area and increased nitrogen balance index. The dry and fresh weight ratio and photochemical reflectance index were also significantly affected, but no general tendency was identified. Photochemical reflectance index was not affected by light penetration into canopy, but the nitrogen balance index significantly decreased in the upper part of the canopy. Summarizing, it can be stated that decreasing light penetration into the crown results in an increase in the specific leaf area and photochemical reflectance index, and leads to a decrease in dry and fresh weight ratio and nitrogen balance index.

Jaskiewicz, B., Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation – State Research Inst., Pulawy (Poland) | Szczepanek, M., UTP Univ. of Science and Technology, Bydgoszcz (Poland)
The field studies were conducted in the years of 2011 and 2014 at the Experimental Station in Osiny, Poland. Triticale (Triticosecale) is a valuable fodder cereal with a high nutritional value of grains. It can also gain importance as a consumer cereal, providing the body with the necessary amino acids. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of precipitation and temperature conditions in the harvest year, agronomic factors (intensive or integrated type of production) and the percentage of cereals in crop rotation (50, 75 and 100%) on the amino acid content of two winter triticale cultivars (‘Pizarro’ and ‘Pigmej’) as well as to determine the nutritive value of the protein: chemical score (CS) and essential amino acid index (EAAI). Our studies have shown that although the amino acid content of winter triticale is strongly genetically determined, it also depends on weather and agrotechnical factors. Precipitation and temperature factors had the biggest effect on the tyrosine (Tyr) content. The contents of essential and non-essential amino acids in triticale grains and EAAI value were higher under intensive technology, with 50% of cereal grains in the crop rotation, and in the traditional cultivar ‘Pizarro’ as compared to the dwarf one ‘Pigmej’. The most important amino acids that limit the quality of protein in the grain are lysine (Lys) and tryptophan (Trp). Using intensive technology, reducing the cereal percentage of cereals in the crop rotation and selecting a proper cultivar, it is possible to maximize the content of the desired essential and non-essential amino acids in the triticale grains, and thereby improve their feed and consumer value.

Vucane, S., Latvia Univ. of Life Sciences and Technologies, Jelgava (Latvia) | Sabovics, M., Latvia Univ. of Life Sciences and Technologies, Jelgava (Latvia) | Leitans, L., Latvia Univ. of Life Sciences and Technologies, Jelgava (Latvia) | Cinkmanis, I., Latvia Univ. of Life Sciences and Technologies, Jelgava (Latvia)
Free radicals can rapidly and irreversibly oxidize various structures, including unsaturated fatty acids in vegetable oils, which affect the sensory properties. Spectrophotometry is the most widely used method for the determination of free radical scavenging activity (RSA) using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Barrier to the further use of classical analytical methods to analyse biologically active compounds in foodstuffs is that equipment requires high cost and has limited mobility. One of solutions is to replace classical methods, such as spectroscopy, with smartphonebased colorimetry. Huawei P30 Lite smartphone was used for colorimetric detection. The free radical scavenging activity (RSA) in vegetable oil was detected using an application ‘Color Picker’, with image matching algorithm for red, green, and blue (RGB) model. RSA was expressed as percentage and measured by the DPPH method. The aim of the study was to determinate the total free radical scavenging activity with smartphone-based colorimetry. For the data comparison and accuracy spectrophotometer as analytical optical instrument was used. Eleven vegetable oils: sea buckthorn, sunflower, rice, macadamia nut, hemp, corn, grape, linseed, rapeseed, olive and milk thistle oils were selected for analysis. The best results with no significant differences (p is greater than 0.05) compared to smartphone-based colorimetry from spectrophotometry were determined using RG values. The poor results were detected by using B value (p is less than 0.05) and were not suitable for determination of RSA. Smartphone-based colorimetry can be used in the determination of the RSA in vegetable oils.
