[Dynamics of the cholesterol content in the milk of Latvian cow herds]
2001
Sterna, V. (Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Sigulda (Latvia). Research Centre "Sigra")
The aim of the present research was to determine the level of cholesterol in the milk of the Latvian cow herds and to find out the effect of the milk fat content on the cholesterol level. Milk samples were obtained from the cows of Latvian Brown and Black and White breeds during the morning and afternoon milking. The milk fat and protein were analysed by Milkscan 133, cholesterol content was determined by spectrophotometer CF 26 LOMO. The average milk fat content was 4,45% and average cholesterol content - 20,94 mg 100 ml*[-1). It was found that the cholesterol content in milk was consistently higher to cows the milk of which had a higher fat content and the cholesterol content was different in the morning and afternoon milking.

2001
Beca, M. (Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Sigulda (Latvia). Research Centre "Sigra")
The quality of forage grass mostly depends on the harvesting time. In early vegetation stages, grasses have a high protein and energy content and high dry matter digestibility. The data on the protein content and energy value of different grasses gives a possibility to choose the best conservation method. Changes in the chemical composition of perennial grasses during the vegetation were investigated at the Laboratory of Biochemistry of the LUA Research Centre "Sigra". The dynamics of the content of amino acids was evaluated.

Basic ability in the context of education
2001
Iriste, S. (Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Jelgava (Latvia). Faculty of Engineering. Inst. of Education and Home Economics)
In the progressive world, the role of education is continuously growing. International co-operation is a necessary condition for a successful functioning of a higher education institution. In the education process basic compulsory known-how plays a significant role and includes communication, independent and permanent learning, team work, information technology skills and foreign languages. The author presents a research on the role of basic know-how in the labour market.

2001
Krastina, L. (Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Jelgava (Latvia). Faculty of Engineering. Inst. of Education and Home Economics)
Latvia has a long-standing traditions in adult education, but only since Latvia regained its independence in 1991, it has obtained a wide public response. Willingness to learn of farmers is increasing every year. The present report describes the latest tendencies in the further education of farmers and states that they are related to changes in social, economical and political situation of the country.

2001
Jermuss, A. (Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Skriveri (Latvia). Research Centre "Skriveri")
In 1999-2000 the field trials with spring wheat 'Munk' on optimisation of a nitrogen fertilizers were established at the Skriveri Research Centre of the Latvia University of Agriculture. The field trials were conducted on two different kinds of Luvisol soil: loam and loamy sand. As the influence of the previous crops-grass, grain and potatoes on efficiency of different (0; 50; 100; 150; 200; 250 kg ha*[-1)) nitrogen fertilizers was investigated. Is stated, that as well as predecessor, and mechanical structure of soil considerably influence efficiency of use of ammonium saltpetre by spring wheat. Some relevant soil properties at the beginning of the experiment were: in loam pH (KCl) 6.3; available phosphorus (DL-method) 100 mg P2O5 kg*[-1), available potassium (DL-method) 135 mg K2O kg*[-1); and soil organic matter (Tyurin's method) 2.3% in sandy loam pH (KCL) - 5.7; available phosphorus - 142 mg P2O5 kg*[-1); available potassium - 92 mg K2) kg(-1); and soil organic matter - 2.2%. The data mathematical processing was done using the General Linear Model criterion Tukey of the program SPSS.

2001
Sudakov, M. | Suett, S. | Kumar, J. | Haekkinen, L. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia). Agrobiocentre)
However, the last case of tuberculosis to cattle was registered in Estonia in 1986, rapid and accurate diagnosting of the disease is still an actual veterinary problem. On farms, tuberculin testing has been regularly carried out showing that tuberculin positive cattle constitute 5,47% from all the herd. During 1997-2001, 23 clinical samples were isolated from the tuberculin positive cattle. Each sample was analysed with conventional morphological and bacteriological methods and by PCR. None of eleven mycobacterial cultures, isolated from the lymph modes of cattle, belonged to M. tuberculosis complex. There were seven cultures identified as M. avium and one as M. avium complex (MAC). The research confirmed that M. avium is the most frequently isolated bacteria causing NTM-Mycobacterioses in cattle in Estonia (63,6%). Two cultures of MAC were isolated from the milk of tuberculin-positive cows, verifying that milk can be a potential source of MAC transmission to man.

2001
Akerfelds, I. (Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Jelgava (Latvia). Faculty of Forestry. Dept. of Wood Processing)
A questionnaire related to the wood drying was carried out among wood processing enterprises in Latvia to clarify the main problems and possible differences depending on production capacity and products. Deformation (twist, bow, spring, cupping etc.) during the kiln drying has been identified as the most important problem for all enterprises. Many problems are related to the product area as very often improper drying technology or incorrect drying schedule is used. Others are connected to the organization and control of drying process - optimisation of the drying schedule, energy consumption, kiln control unit, maintenance of measuring equipment, MC measurement, quality control during drying. There is a difference between softwood and hardwood drying in the product and sales area. Considerably more problems are recognized in hardwood drying (hardwood is often used in furniture production and has higher quality demands).

2001
Medne, R. (Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Jelgava (Latvia). Inst. of Food and Environmental Hygiene)
Salmon (Salmo salar L.) is grown and released in the estuaries in Latvia from which it goes to the feeding areas in the Baltic Sea. The research summaries data about clinical characteristics of fin necrosis and its prevalence in Latvian hatcheries before the smolt stage (complicated physiological, biochemical and morphophysiological changes resulting in migration flight). Clinically expressed fin necrosis was observed in 92.7-97.4% cases.
