The aim of this study was to determine the yield and various quality characteristics of two different strawberry cultivars (Fragaria x ananassa var. Festival and Camarosa), grown in the ecological conditions of Sultanhisar, Aydın, Turkey. The study was conducted over two years, in ten randomly selected open grown plantations for each of the two cultivars. When the fruits reached harvest maturity, they were harvested and their yield values, mean fruit weight, fruit diameter, fruit length, fruit firmness, colour, pH, titrable acidity, water-soluble dry matter, vitamin C content, total antioxidant capacity and total phenolics were determined. According to the results obtained, yield values fell in the second year of the study, but mean fruit weight, diameter and length increased. Similarly, the fruit firmness of both varieties was considerably greater in the second year, and these differences between the years were found to be statistically significant. While the highest antioxidant capacity and phenolic content were obtained from the Festival cultivar, the highest vitamin C content was found in the Camarosa cultivar. The changes of total antioxidant capacity and the amount of total phenolics according to years of both varieties were found to be statistically significant.

Today’s consumers prefer foods with high nutritional value, functional properties and long shelf life. Particularly, interest in fresh fruits and vegetables, which are ready for consumption due to their healthy and nutritious nature, is increasing. However, biological activities such as respiration and transpiration cause loss of water and soluble substances in fruits and vegetables and change the gas concentration in the environment during storage and this situation greatly affects critical quality parameters such as mass loss, nutritional value and shelf life. Minimal processing, such as peeling, cutting or shredding increases the surface area of fresh fruits and vegetables, reduces the shelf life by triggering a variety of enzymatic reactions. The edible film coating is a novel packaging method that is natural, environmental friendly, economic and easily applicable. This innovative technique can be used to produce a product that is closest to fresh fruits and vegetables, maintain the desired quality characteristics, control microbiological spoilage and extend the shelf life. In addition, the use of plant-based materials in film coating applied to minimally processed fruits and vegetables attracts the consumers and increases the confidence in products. In this review, the information about the current applications of edible coating to the minimally processed fruits and vegetables and the effect of this application on some physical, chemical, sensory and microbial changes occurring in the products during the storage period has been presented.

In this study, SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analyses is done in order to reveal current status of fruit sapling suppliers in Hatay. Data collected from representative face-to-face surveys using full counting method with totally 92 suppliers in the present study. Current statuses of companies were revealed according to SWOT analyses. Favourable ecological conditions, proximity to citrus growing areas and sea, presence of unemployed person in the family and accessibility were the strengths of selected region. Low educational level, small parcels of land, suppliers without regular records, unconsciousness of producers on organizing were the weakness of the selected region, on the contrary.
