Determination of Yield and Quality Parameters in Pickling Hot Peppers Grown under Different Water Stress Conditions

Plants are exposed to various adverse environmental conditions throughout their growth period. In recent years, drought, which has occurred and necessitated different measures, ranks among these adverse conditions. At the same time, plants synthesize certain biochemical compounds in response to the adverse conditions they will encounter. These compounds not only strengthen the immune system but also provide resistance against various diseases, and they tend to increase under adverse environmental conditions that plants will face during cultivation. This study was conducted to determine the changes in yield and some biochemical components in pickling hot peppers (Capsicum Annuum L.) grown under different water stress conditions. Two different levels of water stress (%70 and %30 irrigation) were applied in addition to full irrigation (%100 irrigation). At the end of the research, while a yield of 269.42 g per plant was obtained in the control group (%100 irrigation), 150.14 g and 93.33 g of pickling hot peppers were harvested in each water stress treatment, respectively. Total phenolic compound levels increased with water stress; it was determined to be 0.827 mg-1g in the trial irrigated with full irrigation water, 1.170 mg-1g in plants exposed to mild water stress, and up to 1.536 mg-1g in the trial subjected to severe water stress. In addition, total flavonoids and antioxidant compound levels also increased with increasing water stress. The amounts of flavonoid compounds obtained from the trial groups were 0.146, 0.373, and 0.412 mg-1g, respectively, while the antioxidant levels determined by the DPPH method increased in quantity with increasing water stress, similar to other biochemical compounds. According to these results, it was determined that the yield of pickling hot peppers decreased in the case of water shortage that the plants would face in cultivation, but there was an increase in some biochemical compounds.

In the current paper, it was aimed to detect the SSR markers that can be used in the prevention of confusion that may occur in breeding or nurseries, and directly genetically separating Uzun and Kırmızı pistachio cultivars from other commercial cultivars. A total of genotypes of 16 Pistacia vera species, one P. atlantica, one P. eurycarpa and two P. terebinthus species were obtained from the farmer's orchard in Nizip district of Gaziantep province for genetic characterization. Genetic diversity and clustering analyzes were performed with UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Average) and STRUCTURE 2.3.4 programs using the scored SSR loci. Genetic relationship and population structure of genotypes were defined using common and distinct polymorphic PCR fragments. Cultivar-specific markers to be used in identifying and distinguishing the genetic structure of Uzun and Kırmızı cultivars were carried out in the current research. CUPOhBa2127 marker has the highest allele number (Na=10). In addition, 11 out of 25 SSR markers were explained as cultivar-specific SSRs that can distinguish Uzun and Kırmızı cultivars. These markers can be used directly by breeders and geneticists without any preliminary screnning of the markers. A quite serious providence will be achieved in the cost and time that will occur with the preliminary analysis, and thus, the confusion that may occur in large scale orchard establishments or nurseries will be reduced to pretty low levels with DNA analysis.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), the most pathogenic species among the pseudomonas species, is a bacterium that causes opportunistic infections resulting in significant damage to host tissues. P. aeruginosa, which is resistant to antibiotics, also causes fatal infection in human and animals. Infections caused by P. aeruginosa are difficult to treat due to its rapid proliferation in the environment and its ability to form biofilms that confer resistance to antibiotics. One of the main virulence factors of P. aeruginosa is its direct damage to host tissues, which disrupts the host’s defense mechanisms. P. aeruginosa is a food-borne pathogen often detected in various food groups such as meat, milk, fruit, vegetables, and water. In recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in food-borne contamination with P. aeruginosa. New measures are urgently needed in the treatment of patients with infections due to this agent, since P. aeruginosa can develop resistance to most antibacterials. In this review, general information about P. aeruginosa, which has gained importance for public health, will be given.

The study described herein aimed to investigate the relationship between perceptions of hormone usage and customer preferences for broiler meat and meat products in Sri Lanka with special reference to Kandy district. A total of 460 respondents from Kandy district were interviewed using a pre-tested questionnaire. The analysis revealed that 85.9% of the respondents believes the fact that the hormones are used in broiler production. Also, 75.7% of the respondents were unaware about the fact that the hormones are totally banned from Sri Lankan broiler production. Around 71.4% believed that the hormones are still being used illegally in broiler production in Sri Lanka. The study also found that the general public (36.2%), was the main source that the respondents perceived this false information concerning hormone use. Similarly, 83.7% believes that these chemical substances create health hazards to human. 76.7% of the respondents strongly believed the fact that the adolescent girls who consume broiler meat regularly during their childhood may experience early puberty. The findings of the present study concluded that three misconceptions of (i) use of hormones to attain high growth rates in broilers (ii) hormones assumed to be present in broiler meat pose health hazards to public and (iii) frequent broiler meat consumption during childhood is accompanying with the early puberty in adolescent girls, do exists. Though the majority of the sample comprises of highly educated professionals, these misinformation were spreaded from the information generated among the general public. However stipulating a valid certification with no added hormone in broiler chicken meat will be helpful in changing the mind-set of general public.

The maize breeding programs focuses on the development of homozygous parental lines for hybrid breeding to obtain heterosis. The Improvement of homozygous lines in a effective time is crucial for hybrid maize breeding. Objectives of this research were to obtain homozygous lines of maize in a short time by using of in-vivo maternal haploid (DH) technique and characterizing them morphologically. The experiments were carried out at the Eastern Mediterranean Agricultural Research Institute(EMARI). Inducers, RWS, RWK-76 and their hybrid RWS X RWK-76 were used as male parent. As female parent, 56 F2 segregated material obtained by selfing of 66 F1 hybrids developed in maize breeding program of Eastern Mediterranean Agricultural Research Institute (EMARI) and 2 F2 segregated material selected from the open pollinated plants of 9 commercial maize variety. As a result of the experiment, 29 doubled haploid lines (DH) were developed. In the developed DH lines, days to tasseling, plant height, height of first ear , ear length, ear diameter, number of kernel per ear and thousand kernel weight varied as 57-78 days, 151-248 cm, 43-112 cm, 11.20-24.50 cm, 24-45 mm, 224-537 kernels/ear, and 180-320 g, respectively. In conclusion, in-vivo maternal DH technique is a highly effective method for obtaining homozygous lines

Kefir is a fermented product obtained from goat, sheep and cow milk as a result of lactic acid and ethyl alcohol fermentation. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the possibility of producing an alternative functional kefir product from almond milk. It was enriched with banana and honey to improve its sensory properties. Samples were stored at +4oC for 14 days. The pH and dry matter of samples containing almond milk were lower than those containing cow’s milk. Serum separation increased with the increase of almond milk ratio. The use of banana increased dry matter and viscosity, and decreased serum separation. pH, dry matter and viscosity decreased during storage. The highest L* value was observed in the control kefir produced from 100% cow’s milk, and the lowest in the samples containing honey and banana on the 1st day of storage. It can be said that the addition of honey increases the b* value and the addition of banana decreases the b* value. As almond milk ratio and storage time increased, bacteria counts decreased. The lactococci counts of the samples with banana added (except for the control) were higher than the others. In the samples with banana and honey, a higher increase in yeast count was observed during storage compared to plain kefir (control sample). It can be said that the use of almond milk reduces the general acceptability of kefir. Almond milk can be successfully used in kefir production as a substitute for cow’s milk, if sweeteners, fruit and thickeners are used.

Son yıllarda sürdürülebilirliğin bir bileşeni olan sorumlu tüketim kapsamında sade yaşam tarzı ve kuşaklar arasındaki farklılıklar ilgi konusu olmuştur. Sürdürülebilir kalkınma amaçlarına hizmet eden sorumlu tüketim bağlamında gönüllü sade yaşam tarzı bir toplumun yapısı hakkında bilgi verme adına önemlidir. Her ne kadar gönüllü sade yaşam tarzı toplumsal yapı hakkında bilgi vermekle birlikte kuşaklardaki farklılaşmalar gönüllü sade yaşam tarzlarını etkileyebilmektedir. Bu makalenin amacı, X, Y ve Z kuşaklarına göre gönüllü sade yaşam tarzı arasındaki farklılıkları analiz etmektir. Çalışmada 21 maddeden oluşan Gönüllü Sade Yaşam Ölçeği ve 6 adet sosyo-demografik sorular kullanılarak yüz yüze ve sosyal medya aracılığı ile Türkiye-Sivas ilindeki 414 kişiden anket yoluyla veri toplanmıştır. Kuşaklar ile gönüllü sade yaşam tarzı arasındaki farklılığın anlamlılığını test etmek için Kruskal Wallis Testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucuna göre, X kuşağı gönüllü sade yaşam tarzını Y ve Z kuşaklarına göre daha çok benimsediği anlaşılmıştır. Buna benzer olarak Y ve Z kuşağı karşılaştırıldığında ise Y kuşağının Z kuşağına göre gönüllü sade yaşam tarzını benimsediği ortaya konuldu. Sonuç olarak X ve Y kuşağının gönüllü sade yaşama daha duyarlı olmasının nedeni tarihsel arka planındaki toplumsal sorunlarla karşı karşıya kalmış olması, zor zamanlarda yetişmiş olmaları ve hayat tecrübelerinin Z kuşağına göre fazla olması ile ilgili olarak açıklanabilir.

Tarımsal üretim faaliyetleri ile ortaya çıkan yan ürünler nispeten daha zor ölçülebilir oldukları için oluşturdukları zararlı atıklar yakın zamana kadar göz ardı edilmiştir. Günümüzde artık karbon ayak izi ölçümlemeleri ile tarımsal üretim ile açığa çıkan zararlı atıkların belirlenebilmesi mümkün olabilmektedir. Tarımsal faaliyetler sonucu ortaya çıkan atıkların geri kazandırılması, tarımsal üretimin ve çevrenin sürdürülebilirliği açısından üzerinde önemle durulan bir konu olmuştur. Bu çalışmada Konya ilinde hayvansal üretim faaliyetleri sırasında ortaya çıkan sera gazı (gübre ve enterik fermantasyon kaynaklı) miktarları, bitkisel üretimimde doğrudan (yakıt esaslı) emisyon değerleri, biyogaz enerjisi potansiyeli, biyokütle enerji potansiyelleri hesaplanmıştır. Hayvansal üretim (süt sığırı, koyun) faaliyetleri sırasında ortaya çıkan sera gazı miktarları toplam 1,578,108 ton CO2e.yıl-1 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Bitkisel üretimde (buğday, arpa, ayçiçeği, mısır, şeker pancarı) CO2 emisyonu değerleri geleneksel tekniklerinin uygulanması koşulunda toplam 120,564 ton, koruyucu tarım tekniklerinin uygulanmasında ise toplam 36,175 ton olarak hesaplanmıştır. Biyogaz enerjisi potansiyeli, gübre toplanabilirlik oranları dikkate alınarak hesaplandığında toplam 259,780,000 kWh.(m3)-1.yıl-1 olarak bulunmuştur. Biyokütle enerji potansiyelleri ise toplam 4,508.05 GWh olarak bulunmuştur.

Agricultural support is a crucial way to overcome the difficulties of long agricultural production process, lack of capital and low productivity. Moreover, the fact that increasing the supply is not possible in a short while makes agricultural support more important. Different agricultural structures of countries imply different agricultural support values. This paper examines the simultaneous relations between agricultural support and agricultural value added in the six developing countries with the highest agricultural production value. Simultaneous equation systems are estimated by Two-Stage Least Squares method using annual data for the 2002-2018 period. The findings suggest that there is a simultaneous positive and statistically significant relationship between agricultural value added and agricultural supports.

One of the most important impacts of the Covid 19 pandemic that broke out in China in the last months of 2019 was on the agricultural sector and, consequently, on the food supply. This situation manifested itself in an increase in food insecurity and food prices in countries around the world, and rising food prices highlighted the risk of undernourishment. The study attempted to statistically represent the impact of the pandemic on food security and food price increases in countries around the world. The study first compared the pre-pandemic and pandemic periods in terms of three basic indicators, such as food security, food prices, and undernourishment rates, and examined whether there was a significant difference between the two periods. Within the context of these three indicators, an attempt was then made to determine whether the negative impact of the pandemic was more severe in low-income countries. The results of the analysis showed that food prices, food insecurity, and undernourishment increased during the pandemic and that these impacts were relatively greater in developing countries. Therefore, the financial burden of these negative impacts associated with food supply was greater in developing countries.
