GENETIC DIVERSITY AMONG BITTER MELON GENOTYPES ASSESSED THROUGH MORPHO-AGRONOMIC VARIABLES

ABSTRACT Bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) is a plant species recommended by the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) as hypoglycemiant. The characterization of plants is an essential step in any breeding program. The objective of the present work was to organize and characterize a bitter melon germplasm collection, based on morpho-agronomic characters, to assess its genetic diversity and identify genotypes of agronomic interest. Eighty-eight genotypes were characterized for 38 descriptors. Redundant descriptors were identified through Principal Component Analysis (PCA); after their exclusions, a new PCA was carried out to verify the dispersion among the genotypes. Groups in the PCA were defined using the kmeans clustering method. The groups were studied for phenotype pattern using radar chart. Populational diversity was estimated through Shannon and Pielou indexes. Intra group diversity was estimated through analysis of similarity (anosim). The relative importance of variables for diversity was also estimated. Seventeen variables were redundant. The genotypes were grouped into 5 groups. Groups G1 and G5 were antagonist regarding fruit and seed productions and fruit, leaf, and seed sizes. A trend of decrease in fruit, leaf, and seed sizes was found in groups from G1 to G5. The diversity was high. Intra group diversity was high among small fruit genotypes, and low for medium-sized fruit genotypes. The variable number of male flowers (NMFL) was identified as that presented the greatest contribution to estimation of diversity. The genotypes UFRRJ MSC072, 042, 028, and 087 stood out with the highest number of fruits produced.

ABSTRACT - Based on its nutritional and economic value, the lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) is the second most important species of the genus. It has high genetic diversity and potential for production and is considered an alternative food and income source. The objective of this study was to apply the restricted maximum likelihood/ best linear unbiased prediction (REML/ BLUP) methodology to estimate genetic parameters and predict genotypic values in F3 populations of lima beans. Twelve characteristics were evaluated in five populations with indeterminate growth habits (H39, H72, H53, H90, and H56). Model 83 from the Selegen program was used for analysis. Considering the genetic parameters, the highest values of genetic variance were for plant height and number of pods per plant. Pod thickness and seed width are favorable for breeding programs. Seed width selection gain was significant for populations H56 and H90 at 11.26 mm and 10.50 mm, respectively. As for the length and thickness of seeds, the gains were less significant, with population H53 showing the greatest gain. The REML/ BLUP methodology proved efficient in estimating genetic parameters and predicting gains in lima bean populations. The estimated selection gains indicated that the highest gains were obtained for plant height, the number of pods per plant, pod thickness, seed width, and the number of days to maturity. Populations H53 and H56 stood out for having large and white seeds, thus being potential populations for species improvement.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to verify the contribution of seed inoculation with the bacterium Azospirillum brasilense to promote growth on yield components in wheat crop. For this, experiments were carried out in different locations (Santa Maria and Cruz Alta, RS, Brazil), sowing times (June and July) and years of cultivation (2013 and 2014). A randomized block design with three replications was used. The treatments were composed by the combination of ten cultivars, three nitrogen managements and two types of inoculation (10 x 3 x 2). Inoculation was carried out with liquid inoculant in the seeds. The components of grain yield were evaluated. The average number of tillers per plant was influenced by seed inoculation (1.63 and 1.72) when uninoculated and inoculated, respectively. On the other hand, the hectoliter mass responded inversely, reducing to 75.7 kg hL-1. Inoculation with A. brasilense increased the grain mass (1%) and had no positive influence on the variables number of ears and spikelets per ear, grain yield and hectoliter weight.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of soil application of different boron (B) rates to the soil, with and without application of zinc (Zn), on growth, production components, and grain yield of maize crops grown in a Lithic Quartzipsamment with low B and Zn contents. A randomized block experimental design was used, in a 6×2 factorial arrangement corresponding to six B rates (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 kg ha-1), with and without application of Zn (2.0 kg ha-1), applied to the soil at sowing, with four replications. Growth variables (stem diameter and plant height), and chlorophyll SPAD index were evaluated at the R1 phenological stage. Maize ear length, one-thousand grain weight, and grain yield, and the B maximum efficiency rate were evaluated at the R6 phenological stage. Application of B and Zn to the soil increases maize grain yield in soils with sandy clay loam texture and low B and Zn contents; the plant absorption and metabolism indicated synergism between these elements when using soil applications of 1.0 kg ha-1 of B combined with 2.0 kg ha-1 of Zn to the planting furrows. The rates with maximum technical efficiency for grain yield were 3.29 and 4.31 kg of B ha-1 in treatments without and with application of Zn, respectively.

ABSTRACT Lima bean is an important crop in Northeastern Brazil and a source of food and income for farmers in the region. However, there have been few genetic studies on this species, which limits the knowledge available for use in breeding programs. The objective of this study was to estimate the relationship between cycle and production traits using canonical correlation analysis and to identify traits that can be used for the indirect selection of lima bean. The experiment was conducted at the Department of Plant Science of the Universidade Federal do Piauí, Teresina, in a randomized block design with five replications, in which 11 agronomic traits from six lima bean populations in the F3 generation originating from biparental crosses were evaluated in 2019. The data were subjected to canonical correlation analysis using the virtual environment R. The results showed that only the first coefficient of the canonical pair was significant (r = 0.5531) by the quisquare test, suggesting that the studied groups were not independent, as the cycle traits showed coefficients of large magnitudes in the relationship between groups. The canonical correlation results suggested that there is a linear association between cycle and production traits in lima beans, in which days to flowering, days to maturation, pod length, seed width, and seed thickness contribute the most to the association between groups.

ABSTRACT Environmental degradation impacts negatively the diversity and quantity of invertebrates living in the soil, mainly in semiarid regions. Generally, a high diversity of invertebrates indicates good biofunctionality and sustainable use of the soil. We evaluated the effects of 14 years of grazing deferment and the presence of the native trees Mimosa tenuiflora and Cnidoscolus quercifolius on the soil mesofauna of a degraded Caatinga area, according to the χ 2 test, applied to assess the abundance of these microorganisms. The grazing deferment alone more than tripled the soil mesofauna. The abundance of the mesofauna under M. tenuiflora canopies increased by a factor of 3.17 and 3.41 in grazed and ungrazed areas, respectively, and under C. quercifolius canopies increased by a factor of 22.6 in the ungrazed area. The effect of M. tenuiflora in the grazed area was similar to 14 years of grazing deferment. The quantity of mesofauna under C. quercifolius canopies after 14 years of grazing deferment was 6.6-fold higher than that under M. tenuiflora canopies, under similar conditions. The grazing deferment and trees, especially C. quercifolius, increased the soil mesofauna; however, full recovery of such organisms in degraded Caatinga areas may need more than 14 years. Considering the current scenario of increasing environmental degradation, our findings regarding the relationships between soil mesofauna, grazing deferment and native trees are important to devise strategies and procedures for the recovery of degraded areas in the Caatinga biome.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate, through multivariate data analysis, the effect of exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide on the photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange and growth of soursop seedlings under salt stress. The study was conducted in a greenhouse, at Federal University of Campina Grande - Paraíba. The assay was carried out from May to October 2018. The treatments were distributed in a randomized block design, in a 5 × 5 factorial arrangement, corresponding to five levels of irrigation water electrical conductivity - ECw (0.6-control, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4, and 3.0 dS m-1) and five concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 μM), with two plants per plot and four replicates. Irrigation water salinity from 1.2 dS m-1 negatively affected the biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange and growth of soursop. Application of hydrogen peroxide at the concentration of 20 μM resulted in attenuation of salt stress effects on the biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange and growth of soursop. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations above 30 μM intensified the deleterious effect of irrigation water salinity on the photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange and growth of soursop.

ABSTRACT Considering the losses of phosphorus (P) in the soil by the adsorption process and that the use of biochar seems promising from the agricultural point of view, the aim of this research was to evaluate P adsorption by the Ultisol incubated with different biochar doses through kinetic and isothermal study. The experiment was carried out with poultry litter biochar pyrolyzed at 350 °C. Ultisol was incubated with increasing biochar doses, from 0.0 to 61.95 t ha-1. After 60 days, the phosphorus adsorption rate, kinetics and adsorption isotherms were evaluated. The results showed that the soil had the highest capacity to adsorb phosphorus (1.105 mg g-1). Biochar was not a good P adsorbent; regardless of the applied doses, it released P to the equilibration solution. Langmuir model was better at describing the adsorption of P. The pseudo-second order model fitted well to the adsorption kinetics of P, showing that the adsorption is chemically controlled. These results suggest that biochar can increase the availability of P, limiting adsorption; therefore, it could be used as a fertilizer and/or soil conditioner.

ABSTRACT The storage life of ‘Alexander Lucas’ pear is limited by the occurrence of internal storage disorders during controlled atmosphere (CA). 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) can be used to delay pear ripening, however, its interaction with CA conditions is not well understood. ‘Alexander Lucas’ fruit were treated with 1-MCP at 300 nL L-1 for 24 h in air at-0.5 or 1.0 °C before being stored. Fruit were kept at-0.5 or 1.0 °C in normal air or CA (2.0 kPa O2 plus <0.7 kPa CO2). After six months of storage, superficial scald did not develop in fruit. The highest incidence of flesh browning (72.2 %) was found in air-stored fruit at-0.5 °C without 1-MCP treatment. Storage in air at 1.0 °C plus 300 nL L-1 1-MCP produced 88.8 % of healthy fruit. In contrast, 1-MCP increased the incidence of flesh and core browning under CA conditions. 1-MCP and CA maintained greener skin color and higher titratable acidity. No significant differences were found for fruit firmness, total soluble solids and ascorbic acid content between the treatments. In conclusion, the quality of ‘Alexander Lucas’ pear was best maintained during six months storage under normal air at 1.0 °C combined with 300 nL L-1 1-MCP treatment.

ABSTRACT Family farming is important for the production of food for human consumption, but it lacks resources to invest in the soil fertility of its crops. The objective of this study was to analyze whether the use of green manures increases soil fertility in terms of the nutrients N, P and K with low environmental risk for family agricultural production. An experiment was set up in the State of Mato Grosso (Brazil), in randomized complete block design, with a 6 x 3 factorial scheme, four replications, corresponding to 6 types of plants and 3 doses of phosphorus. Leguminous green manure plants were: velvet bean, Crotalaria juncea, Crotalaria ochroleuca and dwarf pigeon pea, in addition to plots with pearl millet and weedy fallow control. Rock phosphate (i.e., reactive natural phosphate) was applied as a source of phosphorus at 0, 50 and 100 kg P2O5 ha-1. The species used as green manure were cut in full bloom and the levels of N, P, K and C in plants and soil were determined. Leguminous green manure plants, after mineralization, increased the stocks of N, P and K in the soil. Crotalaria juncea was the one that reached the highest N accumulation in its constitution, being recommended in the intercropping with species with C/N ratio > 30 to minimize risks of contamination with nitrate in the soil. This work concluded that the managements with green manure plants, especially Crotalaria ochroleuca, are recommended and environmentally safe technical alternatives for family farming.
