1995
Ronceros, Betty | Moyano, Pedro C. | Kasahara, Ismael (Chile Univ., Santiago (Chile). Dept. Ingenieria Quimica)

2003
Sanzol, Javier | Rallo, Pilar | Herrero, María
Apples and pears are fruit crops particularly susceptible to cropping irregularities. A strong relationship has been observed between the effective pollination period (EPP) and the general cropping of the orchard. The EPP concept has also been proven to be a useful parameter to establish a relationship between the variation in the reproductive process and cropping behaviors. For apples and pears, a slow pollen tube growth has been shown to be the main limiting factor of the EPP in the traditional cooler temperate cultivation regions. However, while higher temperatures speed up the pollen tube growth, the expansion of these crops into warmer areas often results in failures of fruit set. Thus, with the aim to ascertain the main limiting factor responsible for fruit set failures in Mediterranean conditions we have evaluated the EPP for two consecutive years in `Agua de Aranjuez' pear, the main Spanish cultivar, by studying the stigmatic receptivity, pollen tube kinetics, and ovule development. Complete flower fertility was maintained for just 2 days after anthesis in both years. Pollen tube kinetics and ovule degeneration do not appear to limit flower receptivity. However, the stigmatic receptivity expressed as flowers with at least one receptive stigma, closely matches the duration of the EPP evaluated from fruit set experiments. This was consistent over the 2 years of experiments, in spite of the differences recorded in the EPP, suggesting that stigmatic receptivity is clearly the limiting factor of flower receptivity. This is the first report for stigmatic receptivity limiting the EPP in pears and suggests that stigmatic receptivity could be an important factor limiting pear flower receptivity and hence cropping performance under warmer conditions.

Effect of UV-C radiation and hot water on the calcium content and postharvest quality of apples | Efecto de la radiación UV-C y del agua caliente en el contenido de calcio y calidad poscosecha de manzanas 全文

Hemmaty, S. | Moallemi, N. | Naseri, L.
| To increase the storage shelf life of "Red Delicious" and "Golden Delicious" apples they were treated with UV-C irradiation at doses of 0, 5 and 15 min irradiation at 1.435 x 10E-4 W/square cm and with hot water containing 4% CaCl2 at four levels (control, dipping at 25 deg C for 10 min, dipping at 38 deg C for 5 min and dipping in 54 deg C for 1 min) in a factorial design with 4 replicates. The results showed that UV-C irradiation and dipping of fruit in hot water increased the storage life and improved fruit quality factors in "Red Delicious" and "Golden Delicious" apples at the end of cold storage. Both UV-C and hot water treatments decreased pH and total soluble solids/titratable acids ratio and increased fruit titratable acids and firmness. UV-C and hot water treatment increased fruit Ca content during storage. The results showed that UV-C and hot water treatment can retard fruit ripening and maintain fruit quality in cold storage. These treatments can also increase Ca concentration of fruit flesh and thus increase the nutritional value of the apples.

Bearing in mind that more than 50% of the land used for agriculture in Mexico is under semiarid and arid conditions, water availability and nutrition are among the main handicaps for crops to produce, particularly if they are fruit species. From the total area cultivated with apple, 36% is grown under rainfed conditions with a 4.2 t ha(-1) yield. Therefore, technology for improving nutrition with a more efficient use of available water is now being considered, in order to increase fruit yield and quality. This could lead to obtaining higher profits, and to being able to access more specialized systems in addition to ensuring a sustainable development. Growth, production, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Cu, Fe, and Zn foliar concentration were determined in 'Agua Nueva II' apple trees, a low chilling mutant of 'Golden Delicious', grown in semiarid condition. Mulching (manure, grass residues, and bare soil as control), irrigation (flood irrigation and rainfall as control), and foliar fertilization (2.0 kg free biuret urea + 2.0 L Bayfolan + 200 mL surfactant ha(-1) sprayed twice a month, and control) treatments were studied. A split plot design with three randomized blocks was used for statistical analysis. Before applying the treatments in August 1997, the nutritional condition of the apple plants was established; Cu and Zn foliar concentration were deficient. Results in 1998 showed a general plant growth, production and nutritional condition improvement with some of the treatments. Flood irrigation significantly affected plant growth, as N, P, K, and Mn concentrations in leaves. Manure mulching also affected significantly plant growth and K concentration and caused the highest yields per tree. Zn concentration reached sufficiency levels, while Cu remained deficient.

Farmlands have gradually been replaced by apple orchards in Shaanxi province, China, and there will be a risk of severe soil-water-storage deficit with the increasing age of the apple trees. To provide a theoretical basis for the sustainable development of agriculture and forestry in the Loess Plateau, soil water content in a 19-year-old apple orchard, a 9-year-old apple orchard, a cornfield and a wheat field in the Changwu Tableland was investigated at different depths from January to October 2014. The results showed that: (1) the soil moisture content is different across the soil profile—for the four plots, the soil moisture of the cornfield is the highest, followed by the 9-year-old apple orchard and the wheat field, and the 19-year-old apple orchard has the lowest soil moisture. (2) There are varying degrees of soil desiccation in the four plots: the most serious degree of desiccation is in the 19-year-old apple orchard, followed by the wheat field and the cornfield, with the least severe desiccation occurring in the 9-year-old apple orchard. Farmland should replace apple orchards for an indefinite period while there is an extremely desiccated soil layer in the apple orchard so as to achieve the purpose of sustainable development. It will be necessary to reduce tree densities, and to carry out other research, if development of the economy and ecology of Changwu is to be sustainable.
