The Government of Honduras piloted and adopted a major new data platform, “Agua de Honduras” that provides data on hydrology, vegetative cover, soil properties, along with future climate scenarios. Implemented by the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT) and contributing to the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE), the platform has been aiding water management decisions, including being used 150 times to identify rainwater harvesting sites and influencing at least one local land investment decision.

El agua es un recurso multifuncional, básico para la vida, pero también es un recurso económico y social. Las zonas rurales pueden apoyar su desarrollo en este don natural, tanto en la agricultura como en ganadería, que son los usos primarios. También permite la implantación de determinadas industrias y la producción energética. Estos usos, consuntivos o no, crean puestos de trabajo y riqueza, pero tienen repercusiones en el medio natural que hay que controlar y no están exentos de polémica. El empleo del agua en actividades turísticas se ha diversificado recientemente. Algunos deportes plantean también problemas por su alta demanda. Pero otros, que utilizan los cursos naturales de los ríos, constituyen un excelente recurso sostenible. Los conflictos sociales en torno al uso del agua deben abordarse de modo integrado para no perjudicar a las personas ni al medioambiente. | Water is a multifunctional resource; it is basic for life, but it is also an economic and social resource. The rural zones can support its development in this gifted natural way in agriculture, as well as in cattle-raising, which are its primary uses. It also allows the introduction of certain industries and the production of energy. Such uses, consuming or not, may create jobs and wealth, but they also have repercussions on the environment that must be controlled and are not exempt of controversy. The use of water in tourist activities has been diversified recently. Some sports also raise problems because of their high demand of this resource. But others that use the natural courses of the rivers, constitute an excellent sustainable resource. The social conflicts concerning the use of the water should be approached in an integrated way, so as not to cause prejudice to the people nor to the environment.
