1985
Curtin, L. (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Auckland (New Zealand). Fisheries Management Div.)
1984 saw demand exceed supply of oysters with record prices being paid to farmers. However, the Pacific oyster industry has problems. It has no overall plan for production targets or for product quality. The failure the commercial spat-catching operation at Mahurangi Harbour in 1983-84 h caused concern to the farmers. A continuing problem is the lack of security of tenure: recent leases are for 14 years, non-renewable.
